Toward our Horizons 9 13 Dedication Poster plastered walls, the infamous goo- ey gum jar, models of cells scattered about, Dolly Parton . . . these all mean Dillard to Glynn Academy Biology (or should we say Maxology ) students. He made us laugh, yet he made us learn. He made the work seem fun, and the learning worth- while. A special teacher, a special friend . . . Dillard Maxwell, We Love You!! 18 DAVID MILLER was a member of NHS, Science, ISS and Racquet club. He won grand prize at the Social Sci- ence Fair and was nominated for Governors Honors. He re- ceived a Ga. Cert, of Merit, Ga. Tech Science Scholar award and was selected to Who's Who. He has made the A and A-B honor roll all 4 years. STACY GROVNER was a member of CBVE, Vica, ca- reer club. Science, model U.N., ICC, Swing and Con- cert Choir, Nia, ISSS, Drama, Trivia, Society of Franklins and Student Council. She has been a member of All State chorus and selected to Who's Who. She was a National Achievement semi-finalist and received 3rd place in de- bate tournament. BRAD STROUD was a member of FCA and Student Council, serving on executive board his junior year. He placed 1st place in the Inde- pendent Social Science Fair and was nominated for Gov- ernors Honors. He wjs a 4 year letterman on the tennis team and basketball his soph- omore year. In tennis he has been region champion, ranked 4th in state, ranked 7th in the 16 year olds and 17th in the 18 year olds. FELICIA MORRIS was a member of NIA, Booster and Career Club. She played bas- ketball, softball and track and was MVP of region 3AAAA basketball tournament. She participated in Youth in Gov- ernment as City Manager and was 3rd runner up on the Homecoming court. Outstanding LES JACKSON was a mem- ber of Y-club, NHS, Science ISSS, 2nd Lt. and band leader. He won 1st place in the Opti- mist Oratorical contest, re- ceived Ga. Cert, of Merit and Ga. Tech Science scholar award. Honors alternate. Na- tional Merit scholarship semi-finalist, and made the A-B and A honor roll all 4 years. APRIL MCGREGOR was a member of NHS, FCA, Latin and Booster club. She was a cheerleader for 3 years. She was selected to Who's Who, Ga. Cert, of Merit, Ga. Tech Science award, A-B and A honor roll 4 yrs. and 1st run- ner up on Homecoming court. ber of Seniors in Action club. He participated in football and basketball and received 3 player of the week awards. Seniors!!! DONNA BAILEY was a member of NHS, Drama and Science club. She participated in the concert band, jazz band and flag corps in which she was captain her senior year. She has received a NCTE achievement award and won 1st place in the Great Ameri- can Smokeout essay contest. WAYNE HALL was a member of the Careers club. Seniors in Action club and ECA. He was on the football team and was awarded player of the week. He was voted Mr. Muscles his senior year. He plans to major in criminal justice. DALE MCNABB was a member of FCA, ISSS and Booster club. He participated in football and received 3 let- ters and was outstanding re- ceiver his Jr. year. He was no- minated for Who's Who and he attended Boys State. He is a candidate for the Coast Guard Academy and Mer- chant Marine Academy. He also made the honor roll throughout high school. BOBBY WILKES was a member of FCA and student council. He has played foot- ball, baseball and basketball throughout high school. He was captain of the football team and the number one prospect in south Georgia. He is also among the top 5 pros- pects in state. LAURIE BUDD was a member of NHS, Y-club, IRC, Booster, newspaper staff and Student Council in which she served as vice president of executive board her senior year. She has re- ceived such awards as James D. Compton Free Enterprise Foundation Award, Econom- ic Department award, Inter- national Foreign Language award, Cum Laude award in Latin, 1st place in social sci- ence fair and received a Ga. Cert, of Merit. She also made the honor roll throughout high school. SUSIE SLADE was a mem- ber of Latin, Science and Rac- quet club. She has participat- ed in cheerleading and Stu- dent Council for 2 years. She was Sophomore Valentine Queen as well as Homecom- ing Queen. She was on the tennis team for 2 years and was selected to Who's Who. She has also made honor roll. 19 SCOTT NICHOLS was a member of Y-club, NHS and the marching band in which he was drum captain. He received a Ga. Cert, of Merit and has been on the A-B honor roll. ROD LIFE was a member of Explorers, SIA and Career in Engineering Club. He has played football all through high school and was chosen most valuable player against Bwk. High. He also received a perfect attendance award 9th and 10th grade. He plans to major in com- puter science. INGRID OVERMAN was a member of NHS, Drama club and CBVE. She participated in Governors Honors and received a Ga. Cert, of Merit. She also made A and A-B honor roll all 4 years. She plans to attend col- lege and major in special educa- tion. DEWITT WEAVER was a member of NHS, ICC, FCA and a member of student council for 4 years. He has received many awards which include U.S. Stu- dent Council Award, National Leadership Merit Award, Ga. Tech Distinguished Mathemat- ics Scholar, Glynn Academy Math Analyses award, Ga. Cert, of Merit, DAR award, and U.S. Leadership award. He played basketball for 3 years and has received the most improved player in golf the past 3 years. He received the Columbus In- terscholastic Invitational Champ award and was individ- ual state medalist. He also was chosen as city commissioner in Youth in Government Day. KIM MCLEMORE was a member of FCA, Science and Racquet club. She was on Annu- al staff and served as editor her senior year. She was on Student Council for 3 years serving as executive board president her senior year. She has also re- ceived the National Achieve- ment Academy Award for the past 2 years. PAGE PLOECER was a mem- ber of Latin, Booster, FCA and NHS. She has been a cheer- leader for 3 years serving as co- captain this year. She has re- ceived the Ga. Cert, of Merit and Ga. Tech Science award. She was nominated for Governors Hon- ors and selected to Who's Who. She was 2nd runnerup on Homecoming Court and has made the A and A-B honor roll. 20 BEN CAMP was a member of FCA, Y-club, Latin dub and NELS. He received the Interna- tional Foreign Language Award and was nominated for Gover- nors Honors. He was selected to Who's Who and received a Ga. Cert, of Merit. He participated in Football, baseball and basket- ball. KIM HA YDEN was a member of Science Club, Racquet Club and NHS. She has been on the basketball and tennis teams. She was selected to Who's Who and received a Ga. Cert, of Merit. She has also received the Na- tional Leadership and Service award. Century III Scholarship award, Presbyterian College Jr. Achievement award and Ga. Inst, of Tech Science Scholar award. She was also a nominee for Governors Honors. RANDY GRAHAM was a member of Science and Latin Club. He also was on the Math Team and Science Bowl Team. He received the Ga. Cert, of Merit and was a Governor Hon- ors alternate. He also is a Na- tional Merit Semifinalist. EVAN JONES was a member of the Racquet club and newspa- per staff. He was on the Track team for 4 years serving as cap- tain for 2, he was also on the swim team. He was selected to Who's Who and and went to Boys State. He is an alternate for Westpoint and he plans to major in History or Prelaw. GRACIA WALKER was a member of NHS, FCA, Racquet club and was on student council for 3 years. She was a cheer- leader her sophomore year and was 4th runner up on Home- coming court. She particpated in Governors honors and was Ex- change Club Student of the Month. She received a Ga. Cert, of Merit and was selected to Who's Who. In debate she placed 2nd in extemporaneous speaking. She has made national honor roll as well as all A honor roll. VALERIE HUNTER partici- pated in Data Processing Work Study and received a Spanish award. She made the honor roll also. She plans to continue in theocratic education and in the business field. There was a dance held in the cafeteria with cake and all the works. It is one of the oldest schools in Ga. Kelso, C. Brantley Talent Show '83 EMC'S Glynn Academy held it's 1983 annual TALENT show in Febru- ary. Marian Harden took the gold singing In a Little While. Excali- hur, a jazz band, placed second, and the varsity cheerleaders came in third doing a routine to Pac-Man fever. Fxcjlibur, Second Varsity Cheerleaders, Third Blood Drive '84 Eltqiblfc tA Donors The Red Cross Blood Drive was once again a great success at Glynn Academy. The Blood Drive was held on January 11, 1984. Each donor had to be at least 17 years old and weigh no less than 110 pounds. Approximately 183 students and teachers attempted to give, but 36 could not for various reasons. We still contributed 147 pints. Again, Glynn Academy reigns over Bruns- wick High by 38 pints. Great job G.A.! 34 Stud Fac. Tennis H i The annual Student-Faculty Tennis Tournament was an exper- ience that won't be soon forgotten! It was delayed several weeks be- cause of the rain. But everyone was still determined to stick it out! Each year students and teachers team up for a very active game of tennis. All in all it was a great success! 35 77s The Season The 1983 Christmas season was filled with joy and excitement as the year came to a close. Glynn Academy's Christmas spirit gleamed through the halls as we prepared for the festive season by entering the dec-a-door contest. The winners were Mr. Wiggins and Mrs. Wendell. He worked very hard to make Glynn Academy one of the best high schools in the state. Mr. Wood came to Glynn Academy from Cobh County. His Enthusiastic attitude and desire for excellence helped us continue to make our school one of excellence in all areas. 46 Foreign Language Many thanks go out to Mrs. May hood and Mrs. Boone for their support and guidance in making this new club a suc- cess this year. King. 84 The purpose of the National Forensic League was to promote the interests of inter- scholastic debate, oratory, and public speaking by encouraging a spirit of fellowship and con- ferring upon deserving candidates a worthy badge of distinction. To become a member of the NFL, a student must compete in high school speech activities to the extent of being eligible for the Degree of Merit. He She must also rank in the upper two-thirds of his class. Each Subsequent Degree must be earned in competitive speaking. The highest honor was that of Special Distinction. Members were al- lowed to wear jewels in their membership badges to indicate the degree they have at- tained. The jewel indicating the Special Dis- tinction Degree was the double ruby. Students attend class daily and receive ten quarter hours credit. This class gives students a chance to get a head start on futures of Data processing and a chance to learn how to operate computers. In the playoffs, first time in eleven years, we lost by one point to Benedictine and ended the sea- son with the record of 9-3. Coach McKnight was very pleased, especially with Senior Bobby Wilkes, who set a state record with 2,000 yards. Bobby was rated as one of the best quar- terbacks to come out of state of Georgia in many years. Coach McKnight was very happy for the Seniors to finish their High School with such a good season!! The two outstanding players are Felicia Morri and Amanda Jones. Felicia has scored over 2000 points since she has been play- ing at G.A. The Glynn Academy baseball team placed third in their region last year with a record of ten wins and three losses. Their overall record was fifteen wins and seven losses. Jim Mock was voted 'Most Valuable Player' for the season. He led the season in hitting with a batting average of 403. As a team, the batting average was at 314 which is the best average the team has had in years. Tony Ellin was the leading pitcher with a record of five wins and two losses. Rob McBay was the cap- tain of the '83 team. Coach Fehr expects ,better things for the '84 team. During the '84 season all play- ers will be returning except for one graduating senior, Clinton Fonseca. Capturing region title made it the fifth consecutive year of their being region title holders.
