He has taught us many classes both required and electives and made them all more enjoyable with his sense of humor, consideration, friendliness, and patience. He even showed these same wonderful characteristics to those he didn’t have in class. Valentines When February rolls around, most everyone has their mind on someone or something special. This was true on February 9th when everyone brought that someone special to the annual Sweetheart Dance, sponsored by the Student Council. On this occasion, the classes chose girls to represent them on the Sweetheart Court. Cathy Turner and Lisa Crosby re- presented the Senior Class. From the Junior Class came Susan Dennard and Joy McKenzie. Cathy Weaver and Sheree Lattany represented the Sopho- more class and the Freshmen were Brenda Baisden and Wendi Winkey. Come on Jim, quit staring. Won’t you take me to Funky Tot HAiidbWEEN Invasion of the Super Sonic Space Cadets Only a Nutt would do this! HALLOWEEN hit it off good this year at ole G.A. It was the beginning of new festivities such as a dress up day and the all new Glynn Academy Carni- val, which turned out to be a great success. Many people came to school dressed up in the wildest of costumes! There were G.A. spirits. Space Cadets, and Shaw of Iran, Hillbillies, Ragedy Ann and Andy and many more. The day was en- joyed by all. Hey, Cut that out! What does first quarter of your senior year’s English class mean? That’s right Mythology. From Hercules’ thirteenth labor, to Hera’s jealous fits, from Pygmalion falling in love with a statue he created to Zeus turning one of his lovers into a cow. The variations of mythological characters are far and wide, such as bacchanals-that is women fren- zied with wine, killing their leader Prometheus; to Amason women disassembling parts of their bodies to improve their skills with a bow and arrow. There are three sisters, Gray Women, who share one eye, passing it back and forth temporarily placing it in the eyesocket in their foreheads. Some other wom- en, sirens, sit on rocks and sing, leading sailors to their death. Not only are seniors exposed to this variation of literature but they are required to portray some of the characters for a grade. As is obvious our true characters were revealed when we became the characters of old. c.rc It Senior Most Talented: Sally George, Danny Frazier Each year the seniors vote on who they think is the best in certain cate- gories. There are nine different cate- gories with a boy and girl voted for each. The categories are Most Tal- ented, Friendliest, Most Athletic, Best Dressed, Most Likely to Suc- ceed, Most Intelligent, Best Look- ing, Most Humorous, and Best All Around. They All Put Out! The Red Cross Blood Drive was again a great success at Glynn. The blood drive was held on January 14, 1981. Each donor had to be 17 years old or older and weigh at least 110 pounds. Although approximately 100 students and teachers were turned down for one reason or an- other we still managed to contribute 179 pints of blood. And we again beat Brunswick High by over 40 pints of blood. To me From Santa. And a Mary Jane Doll. Christmas 80 at Glynn Acade- my was a very cheerful time. There was a certain feeling in the air. Looks like we made it! 1 need more bobbypins! WOW! Why all smiles? For coach David Mcknight, the 1980 Glynn Academy foot- ball season was filled with mixed emotions. After an anemic 2-5 start, the Red Terrors battled back to finish the 1980 campaign with a respectable 5-5 record. Coach McKnight cited the outstanding offensive play of captain MarQue John- son and defensive play of captain Mike Garris. Both came up with the big play when it was really needed. Another big play maker was Victor Mathews. Mathews was the Terrors “man, on the spot in two of the Terrors victories. The Terrors then traveled to the McIntosh Christmas Tournament where they finished runner-up. They hit a slump dropping two more games but got on track with wins over Effingham, Winsor Forest, and Groves. Coach Whitfield cited the fine play of Victor Murrey, Todd Chromzak, Paul Pleasants, Brian Shadron, Alfonzo Hart, Alfred Thomas, Ronnie Walker, and Kevin Brown. Through these players he hopes to build a successful pro- gram this season and for many seasons to come. ® ® ® JV Basketball The JV basketball team of Glynn Academy, al- though showing the desire to win, couldn’t improve on last year’s record. The Baby Terrors of Coach Burnett Rooks put forth a strong effort as they hustled up and down the court. The State-wide purpose of all Y Clubs through out Georgia is “To create. Maintain, and extend, through out the home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character.” Several conferences our Y club attended this year were the Program Planning Rally (PPR) in October the Youth Assembly in April, and the Christian Life Conference (CLC) in May. The club had an active membership and participated in exciting activities ranging in all sizes. Many thanks goes to Mr. Collins. From the time the first word was written until the last page was sold, the newspaper staff concentrated its energies toward making the Red and White an entertaining and informative newspaper for the students of Glynn Academy. Not only did the reporters scour the campus first period; they also became involved in the processes of putting out a paper. They learned to typeset, and to paste pages. They also took a field trip to the printer to see how their stories were put in “black and white”. The publication of the Red and White was made possible through the guidance and unselfish devotion of their advisor, Mrs. Linda Wright. First Row (L to R): J. Amos. C. Weaver, B. Lewis. B. Gibson. L. Our purpose is to control and regulate each club and to give each member of the student body a chance to participate in school activities. The Inter-Club Council attempted to maintain communication between all the clubs on the Glynn Academy campus. The Vice President of Student Council presided over the meetings. Not only were they the link between all the clubs, but also sponsored many projects of their own. The leadership qualities of these students was a tremendous asset to Glynn Academy. In order to become a member of the National Honor Society, students must have had an academic grade point average of 3.5 or better. Students with this average were submitted to the full faculty to be voted on. The students were voted on service, character, and leadership qualities. The list of students which were picked out, became the National Honor Society. This was the third year the National Honor Society has been in existence. Thanks to the help of Mrs. Wheeler and Mr. Nutt, it will continue to be successful. (lop row, left-right), J. Mayberry. B. Amos. M. McBay, E. Jones, K. Thompson, T. Lewis, T. Schueler, T. Baker, B. Their work ranged from selling ads to meeting deadlines after deadlines. To become a member of the Annual Staff, you had to fill out an application which was examined by Mrs. Blanton who chose the new members for the up-coming year. The High Tide staff worked to the best of their abilities to produce a year book full of events, honors, sports, and clubs. The sophomore doesn’t have to worry about getting lost or walking into the wrong classroom, but at the same time the pressures of choosing a col- lege or career for after graduation aren’t yet felt. GEOROIA 31S21 GAMBLE’S FOOD STORE 533 Ocean Blvd. St. Simons Island Georgia 31522 L When Thomas Edison threw the switch that ushered in the age of electricity, Babcock Wilcox was there. When Thomas Edison illuminated the street outside his Menlo Park laboratory on New Year’s eve 1879 in the first public demonstration of incandescent lighting, he ushered in a new era. The Age of Electricity. Providing the power for that historic lighting demonstration was a Babcock Wilcox boiler. Today, Babcock Wilcox continues to design and build some of the most efficient energy systems in America. Fossil and nuclear steam systems that help electric utilities provide power and light for the nation’s homes and businesses. Systems that power industry by burning industrial wastes and turning them into usable steam energy. We’re continuing to investigate new ways to help America meet its energy needs. Babcock Wilcox engineers are exploring new energy technologies such as solar, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), fluidized bed, ocean thermal energy conversion and geothermal energy. For us to continue our work in the future, we’ll need teams of educated, talented people dedicated to finding the right solutions to America’s energy problems.
