Table Of Contents 4 Being able to present often dull materials in a way which is interesting as well as understandable for high school students is only one characteristic of a good teacher. In addition to this, the teacher must fulfill the needs of all types of students by motivating the exceptional and urging them to seek new horizons, while at the same time being ready to answer any questions and listen open- mindedly to new interpretations of old materials. For her ability to do all of these things well, as well as for her ac- tive interests in the Junior Class, her help with the Cre- ative Writing Club and her efforts with the “It’s Academic Team,” the Senior Class would like to dedicate the ’72 High Tide to Mrs. Anne Parker. They also managed to add special fun to the usual activities at pep rallies, pa- rades, Homecoming, and Christmas without allowing their weekly homeroom reports to become any less interesting. Though Mr. Kimsey left and Miss Corbitt came, the S.C. still ran pickle marathons and bus trips and kept the suggestion box open to any poor soul’s contribution. 38 Squares Were Growing Roots? Possibly So, Pythagoras Fired-Up Band Sparks Games; Charges School With Spirit The G.A. Marching Band, with its new additions of flag corps and honor guard, electrified football spectators with their sounds of “Chicago” and music from “J. C. Super- star.” The Pep Band was formed to spur spirit at basket- ball games; and try-outs, conducted by Tommy Fouche, di- vided the Marching Band into selected concert and sym- phonic bands. 48 Laryngitis Is Prevalent After Fantastic Glynn Pep Rallies A preliminary drum roll . . . the sound of clapping hands . . . echoing strains of “Battle Cry” merging and congealing into unanimous cries of “Go G.A.” ... or “We know we’ve got a team,” mixing with chords of “25 or 6 to 4” and finally melting into “Red and White all hail” and dispersing again into drum rolls and stamping feet. 49 X'fPv ao a'oa rui cWr(n yr'OC'V L Sjb ca n cxAre. lov Als ou r L c Qf nk ioc_ D xdS '■ wv v W Om'IU, £cO '£ U arV 9 'VO Wvo o CLjVV' V OxK Llfi Ns , OjlVk_ CjCr A- CX li T JVXf'N.fcX- «X 'J - C f -s jOc c (x_ lo-V SO ■rS$% Students’ Spirits Whetted As Traditional Rain Comes In The Form Of A Broken Water Pipe Even with such mishaps as a wrecked car and a burst water pipe on the field, the pieces finally fell into place giving Glynn Academy the most successful Homecoming in recent years. School spirit, which ran high during the pep rally, reached a climax at the game that night. At half- time the band helped to carry out the theme by honoring the queen and her court with their arrangement of “What the World Needs Now.” With the Student Council making almost $200, the dance proved to be the perfect end to a perfect day. 51 The Gould Auditorium Sets The Stage For A Memorable Dance Slow Music . . . Terrors Deadlock First Game; Smash Atoms For First Victory Glynn opened the season by battling the favored Pirates to a standstill in a tough defensive contest. The Terrors were aided in the 6-6 deadlock by the running of Jack Schaffer and the tremendous defensive play of Tim High- tower. Defense was “the name of the game” as Glynn claimed its first victory at the expense of the Johnson Atomsmash- ers. The only scores of the game came when Buddy Moore returned a punt 65 yards and Paul Miner blocked a kick on the 1 yard line. 55 Recovery Of Fumbles Plus Punf Return Mean Double Victory Glynn Academy’s Red Terrors rolled to a 12-7 victory over SHS Jackets in a tough defensive battle. With SHS leading 7-0 in the third quarter, Virgil Jones grabbed a Jacket fumble and sprinted 80 yards for a TD. In the fourth quarter there was an instant replay as Carl Muchi- son picked up a second fumble and raced to pay dirt. It was the offense’s turn to shine when the unbeaten Terrors blanked Windsor Forest 13-0. Buddy Moore scored on a 78 yard punt return and David Bryant on a 32 yard run. 56 Homecoming Terrors Shine On; 7-Day Smiles Fade With Defeat Homecoming got off to a good start as the Red Terrors decked Richard Arnold 28-6. In the second quarter it was Glynn all the way, as David Bryant, Gil McMonigle, and Buddy Moore all scored TD’s. The final score came as Shane Warren grabbed an Arnold fumble and ran 43 yards to pay dirt. Just as our Homecoming got off to a good start, so did Jesup’s as they handed us our first defeat, 9-0. Although we blocked their extra point, they came back with a field goal to clinch the win. Terrors Lose Defensive Battle; Improve Little With Deadlock. Defense ruled the contest between Glynn and Waycross, with Tim Hightower rolling up 20 tackles. The Terror de- fense faltered during the third quarter, however, as they allowed the Bulldogs to march 66 yards for the only score of a 7-0 game. Things didn’t improve greatly for the Red Terrors in Sa- vannah, as Beach High managed a 12-12 tie in Glynn’s final 3-AAA outing. With the deadlock, however, Glynn Academy clinched undisputed second place in Sub- Region A. si Terrors Remain City Champs; Lose A Tough Finale In Jax. Having lost their chance at the region title, the Terrors avenged their honor by rolling to an easy 36-6 victory over the Pirates. Although Brunswick grabbed an early lead, Glynn staged a quick comeback in the second quarter to put the game permanently out of reach for the Pirates. Luck was against Glynn as they lost a 13-12 decision to Andrew Jackson. The Terrors saw the end of their chance at victory when a late penalty forced them to give up the ball on the Jackson five. J.V.'s Hang Up Helmets With A Mediocre 2-2-0 Season Record Coach Hudson’s Junior Varsity showed strong promise as they finished their season with a 2-2-0 record. Two games were cancelled due to a lack of opposing players. Al- though the “Baby” Terrors lost to Brunswick High twice, they rolled over Coffee County and Jesup. One strike against the team was lack of experience; it was one of the youngest teams Max Braun had ever coached. Compensating for this were two outstanding players: Charles Warren and Bill Parsons, the leading hitter and pitcher. With only three seniors, the G.A. squad pulled a record and showed optimism for an even better ’73 with returning juniors and sophomores. Squad Ends Successful Season Looking Toward '73 Glynn Academy’s Junior Varsity basketball team had its most successful season in twenty years with a record of 13 wins and 6 losses. Included in the wins were two victories over the BHS Baby Pirates. Among the outstanding players named by Coach Crosby were Keith Kilpatrick, Danny Perry, Joe Smith, Frank Thrower, Mike Fagen, and Maurice Miller. n ' iuit Y Jumping Weak, Running Strong — Cindermen Survive Trying Year Under the unfaltering aid of Coaches W. Crosby and 0. Speakman, the track team managed to pull through a difficult year. Although weak in field events, the Terror Cindermen proved to be strong on the track with the able assistance of Carson Holliman, the only trackman from Glynn Academy to attend the State Meet in Atlanta. 72 OPPOSITE PAGE: UPPER LEFT — Oscar Thompkins; UPPER RIGHT — Thurmond Tillman; BOTTOM — Coach Speakman scrutinizes jumping practice; UPPER LEFT — Hal Walls; UPPER RIGHT — David Bryant, James Ramsey, and Oscar Thompkins; BOTTOM LEFT — Jimmy Willis; BOTTOM RIGHT — Steve Barone. Golf Team Tees Off For Victory As Season Ends Quite Up To Par Under the coaching of Herman Hudson, the 1971 Golf Team completed a successful season by finishing fifth in competition with the fourteen teams in the region. The Terrors with the help of A1 Bryan, Most Valuable Player, won seven out of eight games with the Pirates. Matches were held in Savannah, Coffee County, Waycross, Jesup, and on St. Simons. 74 Tennis Team Gains Experience In Heartbreaking No-Win Season With but one netman returning for the ’71 season, Coach George Rose had his work cut out for him. Unfortunately, the lack of experience caused the Terrors to come to a standstill in their quest for a win. But Danny Orlando, rep- resenting Glynn Academy at the District Meet in Way- cross, helped boost the spirits of the team. i . , kJ!Xa i ' zt hSl£t C yd 4 Relaxed Atmosphere Is Evident As Duo Teams Up For Another Year More freedom, less tension made work easier for both administrators. Mr. Owen, with that tough first year safe- ly behind him, had time to show his face in various classes, letting students know he wasn’t just “the voice.” Mr. Campbell, another second year man, was able to concen- trate on daily absentees and excuses, since tardy tickets and detention were discarded. Some serious problems still remained, however, and many unfortunates met the assist- ant principal in a much more “personal” way. 76 Board's Progressively Liberal Policies Ease Students' Static The defeat of the bond issue was disappointing, but the Board of Education improved the school system with many changes. A surprise to many was the ending of tardy tick- ets and a policy change regarding suspension. The smoking area was enlarged to encompass the outside campus. The Student Advisory Board was formed and helped relations between students and authority. Lost And Found Departments Give Guidance And Knowledge Lost, troubled, and misguided students found help in any direction they turned. Those with mixed up schedules and college problems were straightened out in the guidance de- partment. Those lacking sufficient time for outside study found their solution in study hall. The library with a reno- vated audio-visual center and new encyclopedias, was bet- ter equipped to assist academically. Special Education classes provided the time for individual assistance. 78 Hit Those Brakes, Use Those Rakes, And Bake Those Cakes sewed-up armhole . . . dented bumper . . . wilted flow- er .. . blistered hand . . . dead tree . . . unreleased park- ing brake . . . flat tire . . . fallen cake .. . scrawny hog . .. greasy pan . . . crumpled muffler . . . udder fail- ure . . . hit and run . .. broken tractor . . . Communication, Collages, And Concerts Add Up To Culture Developing and putting talents to use were major func- tions of the Fine Arts department this year. Talented art- ists gave the Board of Education a collage depicting the four seasons; while the musically inclined enjoyed concerts given by the band and glee club. Aspiring actors and ac- tresses gained an insight into the acting world with help from the drama classes, and foreign language students gained fluency in speaking through drills. By working hard, students became aware of the benefits culture can bring. Theorems And Angles Attempt To Confuse Keen Math Students Planning to go to college is great, but preparing for it is a different matter, as advanced students found out. Much time was spent as they racked their brains comprehending trigonometric functions, cubes, and proving endless num- bers of theorems. General courses were offered for the non college bound, as the math classes rounded out into a var- ied program. 82 New Books Add Modern Touches To Break Through Old Routine A department familiar to all students was and will con- tinue to be the English Department. But to break the monotony of the same routine, new literature and gram- mar books that concentrated on the modern method of teaching and application increased the interest, as seniors studied British works, juniors examined American writers, and sophomores explored modern writing. OPPOSITE PAGE: TOP LEFT — What do ya mean we're hav- ing a test today? TOP RIGHT — John Howard sneaks Mary Ihley another pass. BOTTOM LEFT — “We can't go on meet- ing like this. While sophomores concentrated on words such as monoplacophera, juniors struggled with redox reac- tions, and seniors studied Newton’s Laws of Motion. Independent Science Study gave sixteen students the chance to further their interests in the varied fields of science. Some of those studied were Electrochemistry, Ani- mal Behavior, Crystallography, and Bioluminescence. «4 Columbus Turns On To Occult In Social Science Department Columbus, the Renaissance, Martin Luther King, group therapy, stocks, government, pollution, Ouija boards, pseu- do-sciences, car engines and hazards on the road occupied classtime and outside research in the Social Science De- partment. The I.S.S.S. gave fourteen students the opportu- nity to continue studies in these fields through indepen- dent projects. Their work was rewarded at the April Social Science Fair, in which all students were encouraged to par- ticipate. 85 New Methods And Ideas Initiate Modem Interesting Projects G.A.’s creative students put their imagination to work in Mechanical Drawing and Industrial Arts classes. Under the drection of Mr. Bridges, students worked on house plans, industrial design, and even on the construction of a sailboat. A new concept was used in Industrial Arts as students worked in mass production or the job lot method. To help certain areas of our community, they made garbage can holders, and to help G.A. they improved students’ desks. 86 Business Department Prepares Students For Big Bad World Students were trying to get a jump on the big bad busi- ness world by learning the skills of the vocation. Speed and accuracy were drilled in the tapping of typewriters and the scratching of pencils. Accuracy was the word in Bookkeep- ing, while executive ability was emphasized in Business Management. VOT students obtained their experience in various offices throughout the community, while DCT and DE students got their training in the medical field and in sales and merchandising. Today, more than a century later, we still believe that a company must do more than just earn a profit. B W’s a pproach to bu i Id i ng a better world is to concen- trate on what we do best. Because Babcock Wilcox is big enough to spend millions on research, we developed and built equipment that helps utilities check air pollution and paper mills control odor. Because we supply marine boilers for ships of the world, we designed a system that burns up shipboard sewage, preventing discharge of waste material into the water. To help insure that the world will have enough electric power, Babcock Wilcox is producing nuclear power plants, continuously working to make them the most efficient, cleanest and safest source of power yet devised. Because Babcock Wilcox believes that educated youth can help build a better world, we’ve donated over $2 million to schools and colleges. If we sound like your kind of place, visit our local personnel office. We have facilities around the world. If your commitment lies elsewhere, help build a better world by doing your thing. We’ll work at ours. IW4 214 MOTOR CONTRACT COMPANY JIMMIE BOONE’S SHOE REPAIR 3507 Altarra Avenue 1301 Gloucester Street Brunswick, Georgia Brunswick, Georgia Phone 264-3011 264 9945 - MRS.
