I ♦ f '?o eowut We of Brunswick and the Golden Isles are deeply influenced and affected by the surrounding waters, which supply our substance, com- merce, and recreation. As we gaze on the face of the eternal, yet ever- changing sea, we are overwhelmed by the vastness and omnipotence of this body. Therefore, after much careful and extensive research and consideration, we have decided to select as the theme of the 1957 HIGH TIDE ... the SEA. This book is composed of the activities of the boys and girls who for the past year represented the student body of Glynn Academy. We hope that, in years to come, it will serve to recapture the memories and hold fast the friend- ships of your high school days. In behalf of the staff, I would like to offer my thanks to some of the many people to whom we are obligated this year, as we have been in years past, for the success of the Glynn Academy annual. First, to the members of the faculty who have put up with our leaves of absence for deadlines and picture-taking,- secondly, to Gil Tharp, our photographer, whose beautiful scenic shots have been largely responsible for the excellent ratings given the past issues of the-HIGH TIDE; and last but not least, our able and hard-working spon- sor, Miss Gena Sullivan. SIDNEY BOSWELL B.S., Georgia Teachers College; M.E., Duke University; Assistant Superintendent. To the students of Glynn Academy, Mr. Ralph Hood, Superintendent, and Mr. Sidney Boswell, Assistant Superintendent, are inspira- tions, not only as influences in our school life, but also in our civic organizations. Our Board of Education is composed of men who give freely of their time, their talents, and themselves. This gift of service and spirit on their part which, in countless ways, builds the morale of our students and aids them in their quest for learning and good citizenship has meant throughout our school year a greater Glynn Academy. MR. JAMES A. WARREN B.S., Georgia Teachers College M.E., University of Georgia Principal Dear Seniors: As you make your plans for the future, many of you are no doubt quite con- cerned about the national and international situation and its effect on your future. I hope that as you consider these problems you will find yourselves equipped spirit- ually, intellectually and physically to meet the challenge. I hope that your school days at Glynn Academy have been pleasant and profitable for you. Knowing you and working with you during the past four years has been a good experience for me. May your memories of Glynn Academy warm your heart and soul through the years to come. Your high school faculty wishes you the best that life has to offer as you bid fare- well to Glynn Academy. 0?viAt TTtate We know Mr. Lee, the assistant principal, as one who can easily bring order out of the most chaotic schedules and figure out just how to get in those required courses. We have received their help for our extracurricular activities. They have taken to heart our problems, both personal and academic. They feel a definite and serious responsibility in molding and de- veloping the attitudes and behavior of the students. Their fervent hope is that they have helped you to be earnest and thoughtful in arriving at your decisions, firm and fair in your convictions, consid- erate of your fellow men and their be- liefs, decisive and logical in organizing plans, and calm and unruffled in moments of stress. Visions of our lives thus formed, Days with.our dreams engrossed. The pittance of life we've taken by chance. The lot we've adopted by whim. This was the highth, the richness of life, That glowed neath the light never dim. These were the days, the musician narrates. As tones of the bells from above; These were the days, the golden days. Days of youth, and of love. 52 ; ■ 'TT?. • i V •' ' SL.'As « ' « . • - ' $ ■ v t r E®m kf • •. , f NJhi;JzT V” •,- , • ' i - ' r ?• $ ■ J-T' - [Vtw • _A •, • 5S£:', ' £ ,« i • -vy c?. i V 1 • Best Looking WILLOU COPELAND BILL PLOEGER 7 faivc iecutitf CfOU 9 CC oj tdc piMt fad CKVfttd Cutest LAURA PARKER KENNY THOMPSON “Tfau. lavex cwuft iaf. ewitflAlny . . . cfau vte t£e vanilla. doctety till Most Humorous LINDA GAY DENNEY BLEDSOE Most Intelligent PATRICIA GRIFFIN SANDY MOCK evie Uvlt? Do you think Lady Macbeth was the real instigator for Mac- beth murdering Duncan? asks Miss Durham in her English IV class. Each student has a special pro- ject to work on in Woodshop and Mr. Bill Roach, teacher, gives them helpful advice and instruction. Mr. Bill Rayburn tells his Agriculture class that by fertilization and careful crop rota- tion we can conserve our natural farm- lands. (ZuwUcuCcoh You must be careful and avoid any blow-ups Miss Truett says as she demonstrates an ex- periment to the Chemistry class. One has to be a math genius to keep up with those brains in Math IV. Turn your steering wheel all the way to the left and then straighten it out to get into this parallel place, Mr. Wootton, Driver Training teacher, tells this pupil. (TuwUculoati To hear the words the proof is in the pudding it's necessary to measure things accurately as these girls in the Home Eco- nomics class are shown doing. Election year stimulated History students enthusiasm in learning the qualifications and duties of the President of the United States. 121 'D'lCUKCltiC s4%t The Dramatic Arts Club is an or- ganization which encourages a lively and growing interest in acting. Under the steady and capable spon- sorship of Miss McLeod, the mem- bers of this club develop an appre- ciation of the finer points of drama. The high points of the year are a series of original and amusing plays presented to the student body of Glynn Academy and thoroughly en- joyed by all. Upper Left: Gloria Smith, the spirit of Autumn, smiles as she watches pumpkin Willou plun- der across the stage. Center: Ronald Ponsell proves the adage that “he can fly through the air with the great- est of ease. Bottom: The entire club is shown in costume from the production given in the fall. Student @ouHCtC Everything nourishes what is already strong. This quotation fits the Student Council well, for this year the council has grown even stronger, undertaken more responsibility, and continued its original capacities un- usually well. This group is the nucleus of every form of student affairs and school life, and hinges on the leaders who serve the council. The S.C. has promoted better school spirit, sponsored greater social functions and has furnished a fertile field for preparation in government and service to the community. May the members keep always aware of their obligation and may the group as a whole continue to grow in stature and wisdom. Upper right: Ann Eulenfeld and Robin Gilbert, Council members on lunch line duty, took Tony Chelewski's name and re- primanded him for breaking in line. Center: Miss McLeod, sponsor, and Mr. Murphy co-sponsor con- fer with officers, Georgia Davis, Recording secretary; Paul Bolen, President; John Quarterman, Vice President; Mickey Harris, Corresponding secretary; Paul Blount, Sergeant-at-Arms; Henry Moss, Parliamentarian; Larry Youngner, Treasurer; for plans which build and carry on a orogram vital to the students' wishes and needs. pe One of the oldest and most ac- tive clubs in Glynn Academy, the Junior Classical League also has the most loyal members of any organization. Led by the ex- perienced and guiding hand of Miss Howard, the club is solidly organized and enjoyed by all Latin students. Some of the most attractive activities of the year are carried on by the JCL, in- cluding the slave auction, the Saturnalia, and the Roman Ban- quet. upper right: With a doll like Suellen Wheless, why would Richard Lyons want to auction this slave off? Center: Members of Caesar's Tenth Legion often buy several slaves. J Lower right: What lowly peasants are these pre- sent Latin students! 7 j44 One of the most colorful or- ganizations in the school is the Pan American League, a group that encourages students to learn Spanish, the coming language, and stimulates an interest in Mexico and the South and Cen- tral American countries. Led by Miss Gena Sullivan, the club car- ries on a full slate of activities, high lighted by the Spring I Fiesta. Upper left: Vicente Duenas, our Spanish- speaking student from Guam, charms these girls with his rendition of Spanish - American rhythms. Center: To add a Spanish air students arrange souvenirs and travel folders in a stimulating design. ea' iCv, s NA 1 77 Due to increasing interest in teaching as a career, it became imperative that a club be established in Glynn Academy to encourage this. Upon Miss Smith's consent to assume sponsorship, the idea became a reality. In organization here is the potential guidance of our posterity. The realities of teaching are in this body recognized, investigated, and ap- plied. Understanding and appreciation of the prob- lems with which a teacher must cope are here openly considered and made to the members of the club. ''I would solid like to clobber you one! 'rd fj 'Orn S'a'e Ori' '° ni‘on Cdr di. °or„ r vei He that hath a trade . . . hath an estate. To prepare students for useful and regular employ- ment in occupations of their choice is the primary objective of the Diversified Co-Operative training program in Glynn Academy. In order to accomplish this, the students divide their time equally between school and a part-time paid job. Invaluable on-the- job training is acquired here, since each student earns while he learns. These D.C.T. members show there is no truth to the quotation; all work and no play. The foundation upon which the FFA organization is built includes leadership, character development, sportsmanship, co- operation, service and thrift. Ribbons are won by its members for their livestock entries or other special agricultural projects entered in the local fair as well as others in the state. This year Jackie Bearden won the top prize for his Grand Champion bull at the fair in Savannah. These boys are a vital group to our community since 'The world leans on farmers. Jackie Bearden is shown loading his Grand Champion into a truck on returning from the fair in Savannah. The entire club and the FFA sweetheart, Jane Burgess, pose in a nat- ural farm setting. Rodney Bennett, John Ammons, and Leonard Harvey admire this fine specimen of an Angus Bull. 7ttat6 One of the most beneficial organiza- tions in the school is the Math Club, a group that stimulates a wholehearted in- terest in mathematics and science. The most influential means of accomplishing this is a series of panel discussions on various topics held during the year, carried on by student volunteers. Here, perhaps more than in any other single group in school, we are prepared for the realities and, often, the hardships of college. A genuine interest in our abilities and potentialities is expressed by the sponsors. Miss Lott and Miss Tracy, and coupled with excellent, up-to-date, and enlightened instruction, is invaluable in forming charac- ter and adding knowledge. Top: John Higgenbotham and Sidney Campbell are shown presenting a panel to math students. Center: John Quarterman, Math Club president, explains the principle of the slide rule to Beth Smith, Secretary, Roger Thomas, Vice President, and Sandy Mock. Bottom: Math Club members and sponsors. Miss Lott and Miss Tracy. A practical and promising or- ganization, the Future Business Leaders of America, stimulates an interest in industry and prepares its members for a business career of their own. Some of the means used to accomplish this include speakers jobs for some of the members through which they learn much about things to come in the bus- iness world. Upper right: Henry Allen, FBLA president checks copy with typist Jane Burgess and Patti Holliday while Mary Nell Bish files materials. Center: Becky Symons, Annette Franks, and Patsy Bodie, are shown mimeographing copy for the state newspaper. Embodied here is the mosi widely beneficial organization in the school. Without their never-ceas- ing aid, the most important extra- curricular educational factor could not function. The library, a refer- ence for each and every subject taught, would be useless without the organization they provide. In- valuable assistance to Miss Stephens and Mrs. Clark, the librarians and sponsors of the club, is given by the members. In the work room (above) and the conference room (right) members type cards, mend books, prepare overdue slips, shelve books and check files. ?%c- ‘ftyt- Tf, To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school higher standards of Christian living is the purpose of the Tri-Hi-Y. Throughout the year successful campaigns are carried out, such as the Good Sportsmanship Campaign, White Christmas Drive, and Clean Scholarship Campaign. The organization is sponsored by Miss Sara Stephens and Miss Norma Muse. Members of the Tri-Hi-Y stress Good Sportsmanship by plac- ing posters in the halls of Glynn Academy. The White Christmas Drive went over the top with canned goods. eta The requirement for entrance into the G Club is a letter obtained in baseball, football, basketball, or tennis. SPORTSMAN'S PRAYER Dear Lord, as we go on this battle through life. We ask but a field that is fair— A chance that is equal to all in the strife. And the courage to try and to dare. And if we should win, let us win by the code, with faith and favor high. But if we should lose, let us stand by the road and cheer as the winners go by. 133 it new to some, most of it well kn many, but all of it enjoyed by every] — VT 'pCeetuty t£e fcutd One of the most ambitious groups at Glynn Academy is the band. Through the long hours of practice and instruction, the members gain invaluable training. Whether playing for some auspicious occasion or just entertaining the student body, their concerts are a rare treat. Glynn Academy can well be proud not only of its outstanding orchestra, but also of the many accomplished performers. 136 Captain This year our cheerleaders have done a fabulous job of supporting school spirit and encouraging our teams whether in victory JAN PRIDGEN JAMES BLOUNT ROGER DAVIS 137 7tde 4 pood cneco cuoccied 'Each edition must surpass last year's and be different.
