Gabriel Radiator! “Ah, yes, there’s good news tonight. After twenty long years on life’s stormy path, the weary Class of ’51 gathered together this May night with their prin- cipal, Mr. Sidney Boswell, (still reminding us to TAKE IT EASY!), to relate their successes and failures. It was a rather informal gathering—recalling their days in Miss Macon's English class. Perhaps I should mention first one of the MOST un- usual of all occupations, that of one Mr. Carl Croft, a well-known millionaire, whose alimony checks, so his secretary. Miss Rebecca Girtman reports, are get- ting more and more numerous. In the past twenty years he has been married to Betty Price, home eco- nomics teacher, Carolyn Gragg, tap dancing instruc- tor, Faye Johnson, orchid collector, and Phyllis Watson, a famous model from the exclusive Alphonso Moye Shoppe. Incidentally, it is rumored that Jerriann Newman, recently widowed millionairess, has an eye on Mr. Johnny Cauley. In Mr. Cauley’s party at the reunion were Richard Scarlett, one of liis many law- yers, and Carolyn Poppell, Mr. Scarlett’s secretary. Pearl O’Steen. Wheatona Walker, Doris Ann Scott, and Homer Jones, stars in the famous TV show, “G.B. Stribling's Follies,” flew from New York this after- noon just for this reunion. They were accompanied by Mr. Stribling and their director, Marie Goodwin. Also coming from New York was Earl Blount, owner and manager of the Blount Advertising Firm. His assist- ants, Barbara Chittenden. Delora Clark, and Jeral Bishop, arrived several hours later. Another former student attending was Joe Chapman, nationally known emcee on the Fivefingers Quiz program. The commer- cial singer on this program is Miss Sonja Olsen. The Fivefingers program is followed by Kitty Coddington, the Lady Next Door, teller of children’s stories. The two famous bandleaders, Rickie Mandes and George Usher, were fortunately playing a three-week engagement in Miami, so they flew up with Buddy Faulk and Carolyn Kennedy, nationally famous dance team, which was appearing with them at the Beach Comber. Teddy Parham and Morton Patterson, strug- gling comedians, were closest to home, however, play- ing a one-night stand in Darien. While speaking of the struggling, I must mention Betty Webster, cub reporter for the woman’s page of the Brunswick News, whose editor is Sara Mitchell. The commercial art firm of Drawdy, Powell Smith, Inc., was represented by Joyce Drawdy, Darvin Powell and Carroll Smith. While some of this class have spread throughout the United States, a great many have remained in Brunswick. Ah, yes, it reminds me of my youth. They are: Jo Anne Johns, golf-pro at the Country Club, Pat Blackerby, local milkman. Bub Miller, football and basketball coach at Glynn High. Fred Bean, garbage collector, Bobby Fenn, Colonel of the Home Guard (that’s the closest he could get to the Army), Mary Ann Whilden, shoe salesman at Whilden’s, Jack Moran, still soda-jerking, Beverly Bruce, music teacher in the primary school. Jack Jarriel, Mr. Scott’s successor in the chemistry lab, Charles Gillican. doctor, Bernita Hudgins, beloved history teacher, Ethlyn Wood, author of best selling sequel to GONE WITH THE WIND, HERE COMES THE BREEZE. Barbara Strickland, vocalist at Donald’s Shack, where Donald Gleaton serves double-duty as owner and bartender; Sara Mar- garet Sappenfield is pianist there also. Mary Starr was recently promoted from ticket seller to assistant manager of the Bijou. Clyde Taylor is now secretary of the Chamber of Commerce; Emily Davis, professional baby sitter. Good news! Malcolm Seckinger has just been let out on parole after serving a term for income tax evasion. Renza South has just replaced Mr. Boswell as prin- cipal of Glynn Academy, and has abandoned “TAKE IT EASY for “SPEED IT UP.” Also on the faculty are: Jimmy Pearson. Joyce Livin, Marie O'Hagan, Teddy Tatum. Lillian Johnson and Harry Herring. Shirley Tomlinson Reu has just been elected presi- dent of the Modern Wives of 1971 Club. (Mike is President of the bank.) Other members are: Betty Pilgrim McBurnett, Winifred Hunter Cotney, James Thomas Paulk, Joan Ricks Jones. Betty Jean Cope Warner, and Mary Nell Driggers Cason. (CLASS PROPHECY, Cont’d) Frankie Quarterman and Clarice Ray, co-owners of a famous chain store, on hearing of the reunion immediately returned from Cuba. Linwood Roberts has retired from pro football and accepted the posi- tion as coach of Notre Dame. Sara Odom has just opened “Sara Jo’s Salon,” which features a reducing course. Among her patrons are: Barbara Adams, Martha McGee, Mary Mathews, Carolyn Perry. Jean- ette Spaulding, Marie Cowman, John Bennett and Barney Brannen. The group was entertained by David Lipthratt’s Hillbilly Band, among whose members are: Sophie Larsen, Don Jordan, Ned Branch. Bobby Douglas, Gene Hodges. Marguerite Rozier and Theron Womack are their vocalists. On leave from the circus were the Bouncing Four, composed of Roy Lee Spores, Rosalie Johnson, Mary Sylvia and Leon Hall. The strong man. Jimmy Thornton, accompanied them and amazed us with spectacular feats. Bobby Crofton. bareback rider, with Mary Fowler and Billy Higgingotham, his assist- ants, also contributed to the entertainment. Seabert Parsons is now a pilot on a transoceanic airliner. His co-pilot is William McDonald, and his hostess is Glynn Simmons. We have two romantic duos with us from Hollywood. Claire Zell and J. C. Jewell, and Betty Alford and Bobby Torras. Refreshments were furnished by Butts’ Bakery, owned and operated by Addie Lou and Thomas Butts. Benny Brown, famous bread browner, and LaVerne Slaughter are employed by them. Eugene Davis, now owner of the Davis Dalight Grocery, came, bringing some of his employees who are: Davis Gibbs, manager. Ann King and Ada Lloyd, cashiers, and Norman Stewart, delivery boy. Still eligible among the bachelors are: Alton Wal- ling, professional pool player. William Crowder, owner of the Brunswick News, Donal Brunegraff, private eye, Don Jones and Guy Cheek, fearless firemen, James Maddison, rich oil magnate. Recently returned from a safari in Africa are: Mar- tha Boone, Joyce Carter, Bobbie Jean Watts, Mary Lee Murrah, Margaret Ann Ricks, Myrtle Hill and Bar- bara Bennett. Brunswick was recently honored by the radio show, Queen For A Day; the Queen selected was Hazel Dowdy. Other contestants were: Ida Mae Chapman, Jewel Cobb and Jo Connaly. Jack Bailey’s place has been filled by our own Bobby Atwood. The talk of the party was the forthcoming Gover- nor’s election. The leading candidates are: Legette Owens and Allen Phillips. A bit of excitement occurred when Donald Peters and Jimmy Paulk, campaign managers for Owens and Phillips respectively, en- gaged in fisticuffs. They were immediately separated by our alert policemen, J. C. Nix and Bobby Deaver. Susan Daniels fainted and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance attendants, Eugene T. Davis and Marion Morris. We had other celebrities among us; Jimmy Shell, Father of the Year. Jim Radford, heavy-weight cham- pion. Eugene Stallard, noted news analyst. Bill Crosby, crooner, and Benny Schopfer. international correspond- ent. Flash! It has just been announced that Brunswick’s first lady Dog-Catcher is Lena Grace Powell. Her able assistants are Betty Taylor, Isabel Hancock and Edith Jacobs. The assistants’ assistants are Pauline Moseley and Georgia Thomas. As we started to leave, we en- countered a merry group crowded about Dawn Nason, famed Metropolitan star. In this group were some familiar faces, Betty Joyce Moseley and Jonell Hutto. Hovering in the background was the famous blues singer. Margaret Lane. Transportation back to our respective places was provided by Dean’s Dandy Bus Line, owned and operated by Charles Scarboro. The bus drivers were: Warren Herndon, Marvin Highsmith, Andrew Self, Kenneth Loper, Franklin Mikell and Buddy Lovett. Gabriel Radiator was brought to you by the makers of Duzn’t, the soap that duzn’t.
