GLYNN IG H TID 19 4 3 Presented by THE SENIOR CLASS of GLYNN ACADEMY Brunswick, Georgia Second Edition foreword To perpetuate the memories of work and play at Glynn Academy is the aim of the High Tide Stall of 1949. We hope this record will bring back the happy reflections to those before us and be a source of inspiration for those who follow. — The High Tide Staff MR. SIDNEY BOSWELL We, the Senior Class of 1949, dedicate our Glynn High Tide to you, Mr. Boswell, in sincere hope that it will express in some way our respect and admira- tion foi you. We sincerely appreciate the constructive guidance, your unselfish- ness, and true friendship that you have demonstrated through these four eventful vears. HP f-4 SIDNEY BOSWELL Principal CLASS 49 HISTDHY A few score and some years ago We brought forth upon this campus A new class — Dedicated to the proposition that Anyone can learn — Even us. We have learned a great deal from books, (lasses, instructors, and otherwise. In our Freshman year, we were steered by Caroline Krauss, Johnny Patha, and Bobby Morriss. Even though we were very shy and typically verdant as Freshmen, we received an overdose of the much dreaded Glynn Academy initiation. Despite all the grease, lipstick, soap, syrup, peroxide, and shoe polish a swell time was had by all; much to the chagrin of our teachers and parents. During our Sophomore year, when we had mustered more courage, we were captained by Eddie Dykes, Jack Conyers, Caroline Krauss, and Jane Krumrine. That October we witnessed the hurricane. Terrible as it was, we didn’t mind, for we missed two days of school (which we had to make up later). We tried to demonstrate the real Glynn Academy spirit to our Freshmen. There was not the first evidence of lipstick, soap, or shoe polish on the campus. (Now, hence- forth and forever hazing will be banned on our campus.) When we were Juniors, we were skippered by Nick Mavromat, James Fiveash, Johnny Patha, and Caroline Krauss. In May, we gave the Senior Class a supper- dance at St. Simons. It was a most enjoyable occasion, but we were constantly thinking how much we would delight in being the honorees one year hence. Thanks to pilots Upchurch and Cannon. The Senior year arrived when we were men and women of the world, led by Lowell Kepp, Nick Mavromat, Caroline Krauss, and Bobby Morriss. In Decem- ber, we attended the Christmas Formal at Wood Gymnasium, sponsored by the Student Council. In May, our annual Class Night Variety Program was given, presenting the versatile abilities of our talented class members. Thanks we owe to Mrs. Bunkley and Mrs. Ihley. Miss Macon, gratefully we were yours. Baccalaureate and graduation in May brought to a close our four years of travel through the halls of learning. Whatever toe do, the class of ’49 zvill Little note nor long remember xuhat We write here — But we can never forge what We did here. F A C U L T Y Jeanette Anderson English A.II.. The Terrors not only went undefeated for the regular season but won their region in a play oil with Richmond Academy of Augusta. The Terrors then went on to meet Lanier of Macon in the semi-finals of the State. Lanier won this game by a close score of 12 to 0. This was the first undefeated season in the history of the school. Coach C. M. Page along with the assistant coach, C. VV. Lamb, trained his team for Glynn’s first year of G.l.A.A. football. Coach Beth Hart. . . . Fourth row: Lucy Weeks, Betty Ann Smith. Prudence Sinkhorn, Joan Walling, Ada Lloyd. The 1948-49 edition of the Glynn Academy Terror- cues turned in one of the best seasons in recent years, winning twelve and losing five for a .688 batting average. Coached by Beth Hart, in her second year at the Glynn school, the Terrorcttes got off to a bad start losing to Nichols and Patterson, snapped out of losing streak momentarily by whipping Commercial High of Savannah, but then the unbeaten state champion Baxley six came and handed a 42-29 defeat to the local girls which was the highest score rung up on the Red and White team all season. But even in this defeat, the Hart-coached girls hail a moment of morale build- ing when it was announced that the Baxley girls had a 66 point average per game until they came here. Savannah High. Patterson. Waycross and Jesup and Nahunta all fell in rotation, but then the Waycross girls caught the locals on a bad night and sneaked past the Glynn team to win 33-31. Baxley again administered a defeat, but the locals put together a five-game win- ning streak at the end of the season beating Com- mercial. Savannah, Nahunta. Jesup and Wacona in order. The victory over Wacona was especially sweet for the seniors on the team, as Wacona had eliminated them twice in previous years from the District Eight tournament. The Glynn sextet racked up 578 points in the season to 462 for their opponents. This figures out to a 36 point per game average for Glynn and 28 point per game average for their opponents. Captain Olga Fallen, who is graduating this year, was high scorer for the season with 258 points, followed by Marilyn Peacock with 184. Fallen had a 15.6 average which was just three-tenths better than Peacocks’ 15.3 but the latter did not see as much action as the Captain. The superb passing of the two short but speedy for- wards, Gignilliatt and Lyre, who scored 54 and 65 points respectively, enabled the taller forwards to rack up their high scores. Rarely hitting the headlines, the guards. Dickie Padgett. Palsy Woods, Margaret Cate, Ellen Mavromat. exhibited finesse and giit in holding the opponents to a lower score than the Terrorettes racked in on offense. The three varsity forwards. Fallen. Peacock, and Gig- nilliatt are in the 1949 class and will be leaving the team this year. The local coach will have to develop a team centered around the guards who are returning.
