This is Stretch Anderson bringing you what may be twe hope? the last broadcast from the good ship 49, in the year 1959. For two days the 49 has been lashed by the huge waves: despite all the efforts of Teaser Benton and his assistant, Frying Bacon, the engines died out last night. The medical staff, headed by Dr. Sawbones Petrak and the ship's nurses, Pat Nestle, Arden Wicksell, Doris Smith, Iackie Cooker, and Marie Fabian, have been on their toes treating the injured passengers. Flash! There's trouble in the ship's beauty salon headed by Marjorie jenkins. Bashful Al Smith is there now trying to calm the famous Paris designers, Diane Iohnston and Marie Arnold. lust a moment, folks! A Coast Guard cut- ter is making its way toward us through the surging waves. The men are sending a line over now fit must be Beebe's linel. The first over on our deck is lron law Babcock. Our captain, Eyebrow Norelli, just called all hands to abandon ship. The last men to leave the ship are diving from the decks, fol- lowing the brave example of Lois Behlen, Olympic swimming champion. A big celebration is being planned for the cutter and its crew. The show will be di- rected by Ruth Christoff. One of the features of the program will be the singing of Car- men Clark. Bill Gurowitz and Leroy Zeid- ner, second-class seamen, will sing their famous song, Don't Pour the Lighter Fluid in the Cup or the Place WILL Go Up.in Smoke. The last act will feature Hash-Mark Lampe and Blushing Brown doing their fa- mous act, The Shades of Night Are Falling, But We Got a Good Look Anyhow or Laugh, You Fools. As we inspect the cutter, we walk into the Officers' Lounge and see Ron Hawley and Ken White still reading Classic Comics. On deck we meet Punchy Warner who is recovering from a recent defeat at the hands of Sugar Iim Clay, World's Bantamweight Champion. As we go over to console him, he utters his famous words, lf you hit me too hard, I'll quit fighting. As we sit on deck, we see two noted world travelers, Eleanor Ruggiero and Mary Alice Grinnell. We learn that they are going to France to visit the famous fashion artists, Claire Leonardi and Shirley Fredericks. Oh, look who has just arrived, our two devoted sweater twins, Barbara and Armand Pitkin, followed by the famous violin virtuoso, Pat Sleezer, and her traveling companion, Alice Gorthey. Now that We are approaching land, and everyone is safe and sound, we must take leave of you. G.H.S. led at the end of the third quarter, 29-28, but Little Falls netted a quick two-pointer to take the lead soon after the fourth period opened. G.H.S. then pulled in front, 38-34, as lim Pianelli made three bas- kets, and Gardinier, who finished the even- ing with l6 points, made one. The visitors then came back with a basket and a foul shot to trail, 38-37, but they lost their chance by missing two foul shots in the waning seconds of play. On the night of Ianuary 21, the G.H.S. courtsters traveled to Iohnstown and returned home with a 52-26 victory over Coach Sied- lecki's winless team. It was a big night for many of the G.H.S. players, who were also on the football team which suffered an upset loss to I.H.S. last fall. Gardinier led the G.H.S. attack with l5 points. The fine work of Captain Lomanto and Satterlee under the boards was a big factor in the G.H.S. victory. Coach Alofs pulled out his first stringers early in the fourth period, and everyone on the team saw action. The team's scoring was led by Bob Gar- dinier and Paul Pozefsky. With Captain Angelo Lomanto, Gene Satterlee and lack Sanford setting up the plays, this combina- tion represented a well-balanced unit which turned in many fine performances. Iust prior to the final game of the season against Mechanicville, G.H.S. was saddened by the death of its Coach, lack Alofs. He was a great coach, admired by teachers and students alike. As a final tribute to the memory of their coach, G.H.S. went all out to beat Mechamicville in its final game. The Iunior Varsity, coached by Art Ritchko, finished the season with ten victories and eight defeats. They were paced by two southpaw forwards, Don Shoblom and Laur- ence DeLaurie, who were ably assisted by Dick LeFever, Iohn Orloff, and Ioe Kobuskie. Three public pro- grams were given-one at Christmas time, one in April, and the last at the annual choir festival in May. At Christmas the choir, assisted by the orchestra, not only sang beau- tiful traditional carols but also gave the favorite Waring arrangement of The Night Before Christmas. Accompanists for the choir were Ieanne Simon and Marion Rose. The governing body of G.H.S., the Student Council, is composed of eighteen members. The membership includes six seniors, five juniors, and four sophomores. The presi- dents of the three classes are exofficio mem- bers of the Council and attend meetings. Mr. Bert H. Crandall and Mr. Arthur Ferguson, sponsor, attended all the meetings to give advice. The officers elected at the initial meeting are: Angelo Lomanto, presidentp Sanford Warner, vicepresidentp Carolyn Paciolla, secretary: Robert Beebe, treasurer. Council meetings are held every Tuesday at 8:00 in room 208. Each meeting began with the flag salute. The Council then dis- cussed school problems and activities, and many improvements were suggested and fauna? carried out. There were always several projects under discussion. The Council helped the school in many ways this year just as it always has. Coun- cil members were always sitting at the little table outside room 208 selling tickets for foot- ball and basketball games. They gave up their study periods to help encourage the sale of tickets. Other tasks were: checking coats at basketball games, sponsoring a suc- cessful football hop, football banquet, and a Student Council dance, backing up Mr. Dock- stader and the Safety Council, functioning with a Faculty Committee on school improve- ments. It was their avowed desire to present an entirely new layout, which would not only be pleasing to the eye from the outside but also from the inside. Each editor had his or her own committee that met separately and worked individually on their particular project. In the meantime, Mr. Check and the editors met every Wednes- day night in room 107 for many weeks to discuss and make plans for the Oracle. As soon as most of the plans were completed, the general meetings were cancelled: then the editors conducted their own meetings. Because of the high costs, the staff was afraid that there might not be enough money to pay for the Oracle. Through the diligent efforts of the advertising committee, the money was raised. The advisor and his group of editors started planning the 1949 Oracle in the spring of 1948 in order to be sure copies would be in the possession of the students by the closing date of school. The material was turned in by the middle of lanuary, and the processing was completed by the staff on the 15th of March. The printers were extremely active in finishing the job, and the book was ready by the designated date agreed upon between the school and the publisher. Editor-in-Chief-Gerald I.. KM The purpose of the Felicita Club, since its beginning in 1923, is to be helpful to the school and to produce better relationships between the girls. This year these ideals have been carried out under the following officers: President, Ruth Christoftg First Vice- President, Patricia Scribner: Second Vice- President, Kathryn Batty: Secretary, Ann Beenp .Treasurer, Barbara Brown: Advisor, Miss Cassidy. This year the Felicita Club has had an enrollment of about 32 girls. The club does much in the field of service for both the school and other outside organi- zations. During the year, some of the club's usual activities are as follows: Initiation of new members. Serving at banquets. Ushering at basketball games and con- tests. Other projects this year were making up several Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for needy families, and money-making activi- ties. During the year the girls showed their patriotism by helping in the Red Cross, Home Fund, and March of Dimes drives. About every two weeks the Felicita honor charm is awarded to a girl who has done outstanding work on some project. This year the Felicita girls have sold candy, cokes, and ice cream at the basket- ball games. They have shared the proceeds with Student Council.
