History of the Senior Class We, the 1951 Seniors of Glover Consolidated High School, are happy to know that the school day memories and activities are to be retained in the form of a school annual. This yearbook will be a source of enjoyment now and in the future. Although we will only be privileged to live one year among its pages, for this we are grateful. Yet, as a graduating class, we believe THE TOMAHAWK can be endeared to us through a bit of reminiscening. At least there will be a few footprints of our former school days. We do not think we are selfish in so doing as there are others connect- ed with our school whom we think will enjoy the doings and undoings of our school agenda from 1939-51. Among these, other than our classmates, are our parents and teachers who are dear to our hearts. j Of course, there has beensome Mathematics involved along this journey in that there was a continual adding and taking away as the years passed. Only the problems in subtraction gave us worry as the loss of a classmate brought a note of sadness. But experience has taught us that there are some things in life which must and can only be kept as cherished memories and nothing more. The year 1939 found a shy group of wide-eyed youngsters entering the thres- hold of Glover Consolidated High School, on that September morning, for the first tirne. Only two of the original class still remain. They are Bill Hogan and Frankie Pearl Burran, Among the excited youngsters all was confusion as Miss Doris Lucas, the first grade teacher, had a trying time teaching the AB C's and THE PRIMER. We found ourselves, the next year, in the second grade with Mrs. Edwin Lockey lending a guiding and helping hand. L. B. Vaughn, Elmer Richardson and Billy Earl Shaw wanted to go over every hard bump with us, and find happiness and joy in pursuing the path of education, so they joined the little band of scholars. Since some children work much more rapidly than others, we find Rose Marie Henderson and Meda Ann Pyle taking advantage of the opportunity to skip a grade and join us in the third grade with Mrs. Loma Mayes as our teacher. By this time, we thought we had about mastered our primary course of study, we were ready for the elementary grades. For the next three years we were under the strict guidance of our Superintendent's wife, Mrs. Mittie Byrd Smith. We found trouble with long division, Roman numberals, many parts of speech and spelling. L. E. Minter curiously looked us over and decided he wanted to join us in the fifth grade. Our teacher for the seventh and eighth grades was our beloved Mrs. Lena Beathard. She was not only our teacher but our friend and volleyball coach for the girls. 'The seventh-grade is a memorable year because the F. F. A. Boys with Mr. Frank Beathard, as teacher and sponsor, took a group to Carlsbad, New Mexico. The following year was our last year in grammar school. We were getting ready to take the big step into high school. We had anxiously looked forward to be- coming Freshmen for those eight long years. At last, we really became Freshmen and it was not long before we realized the Sophomores had initiated us into high school 'in their imaginative ways. We had at last come to the big events dreamed of since first entering school ---- volleyball and basketball with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beathard as our coaches. We played the games hard even though some games were lost and some were won, we still enjoyed playing.

In the ninth grade our homeroom teacher was Mrs. Lena Beathard and again to our joy we had another problem in Mathematics---that of addition. We were indeed glad to add Bobby Jack Minter to our class. We had different teachers for each sub- ject in high school. It was like breaking hold of our mother's apron string---we had been accustomed to one teacher guiding our trembling toes over the bumps along the way but now with several teachers to guide us we felt that the world was ours just for the asking, but we found it wasn't as we had to really work as well as dream. Mr. Frank Beathard took the F. F. A. Boys on a trip through south Texas. In the tenth grade Mr. Beathard was our homeroom teacher. We added Emma Jean Beal to our class. As Sophomores we realized that we were still pursuing the path of education as our school work was harder each day. Miss Gladys Vickers was our amiable homeroom teacher in the eleventh grade We were dignified Juniors. This was a memorable year for several reasons: Mr. Earl Lock took the F. F. A. Boys to Galveston. The F. F. A. Boys with Mr. Earl Lock and the F. H. A. Girls with Miss Vickers, Mrs. Jeff Davis, and Mr. J. C. Merriwether went in a bus to the Fat Stock Show in Houston. Glover boys won first place in the county meet in basketball. These and many other short trips made our Junior year an enjoyable one. ln our twelfth year of school Mr. Earl Lock is our teacher. We now have the distinction of being called Seniors. What an honorf One that we have looked forward to for twelve long years. What we had set out to accomplish in 1939 has become a reality in 1951. During our last six years we have been under the strict supervision of Mr. Elmer Langham, our superintendent. We have striven to conduct ourselves so that Glober Consolidated High School shall have benefited in some slight degree by our stay. Although we may have fallen short of our attempted goal, at least we have tried: and it is more praiseworthy to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all. At last we have arrived at the goal which twelve years ago seemed so im- measurably distant. . We entered school assured of kindly expert guidance with qualified supervising teachers. We leave to enter the vast school of experience in the work-a-day world, with no guide but our own intelligence and no teacher save the experience we are about to acquire. Having shared one another's joys and sorrows, successes and failures for so long, let us keep happy memories of our years together.
