The USS GLOVEK cruised the Great Lakes for two months from June 22nd through August 26th. The GLOVER visited 17 ports during the ninth annual Great Lakes cruise. The cruise was co-spon- sored by Navy Recruiting Command and the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. The port visits provided mid-Americans with a rare glimpse of a modern Navy warship. There were benefits to recruiting also. Young people contemplating military service got an opportunity to learn firsthand about the missions, equipment and people who make up today's Navy. The cruise also provided an opportunity for the ship's crew to train in restricted waterway ship han dling. Such training prepares the ship for transiting demanding navigational areas worldwide, such as. the Panama Canal.
