She doesn’t find GHS different from her school when talking about the school system and courses. She does find it a change in en- vironment because she attended a private school for girls and GHS is coed. English is not a problem because it is her second language. She feels homesick once in a while but the family she’s staying with and the friends she has met make it a lot easier on her stay in Gloucester. The one thing she’s learned from her experience here is that it’s great to have a good relationship with other people in different parts of the world. AMAYA CORTABITARTE Amaya is from Madrid, Spain. She lives in East Gloucester with a family she enjoys being with. She thinks Gloucester is unique with its typical fishing port and New England houses. She likes GHS because of the variations of subjects offered to her. She has met a lot of kind people at the high school. She feels that her best experience here is the family she’s staying with. ELIAS PAVEZ Elias is from Chile, he came to Gloucester as an exchange student and he is learning to speak English as a second language. Elias feels that Gloucester High School is dif- ferent than his old one in many ways. The thing that he likes most in this school is the thousands of pronunciations that the students and teachers give his name. Elias also enjoys playing soccer and is happy to be learning how to breakdance. SYLVIA TOSO Sylvia is 14 years old and comes from Chile. She likes Gloucester and Gloucester High School because of the many new ways and her familiarity with the language. GHS is different from her school in the types of studies it offers and its approach toward learning. She finds ten- nis and “American” football very interesting. She says it is hard getting used to the big change and different ways. She most of all misses her family at home. CAROL DIAZ Carol is here from Chile, she says that she likes the winter time in Gloucester because of the snow. Carol finds the school alot different than hers in Chile because the students are able to move freely among their friends here. She likes to play volleyball and basketball and is enjoying learning more about America and its history. Carol misses her family most and the way of life that she is used to. KAMBLANLEE Kamblan is an exchange stu- dent from Chile. She finds Gloucester to be very pictures- que. Kamblan is enjoying her new friends and feels that they are the best experience that she has had so far. She likes to play volleyball and soecer and believes that she is improving her studies and her life by com- ing here. -vfc. 72 Michele Manning Secretary 1985 Class Officers Jack O ' Maley Pamela Duncun Treasurer Natalie Daley Silvana Nicolosi President Katheryn Van Aken Vice-President September 6- Bates, a passenger in her own car 8- Happy Birthday Steve Smith 10- The clock in 143 defies Einstein’s Theory of Relativity 1 1- Congratulations GHS Field Hockey team on your first victory 1 2- “Without the class, there is no — ” Ask SN or PC 13- Happy Birthday Julie C. 14- “Ha ha, you can’t get in.” CRASH! 15- Nuclear Pro — ! Bachler, then Prin- cipal of Gloucester High School, organized the boys of the high school into one military company. Military Training was conducted by the school from 1885 to 1918. The School Report of 1919 stated: In September, 1919, the work in military drill was taken over by the Reserve Officer Training Corps. During the past 100 years thousands of young men, and since 1942 hundreds of young women, have received their first introduc- tion to military courtesy, drill, leadership, citizenship and patriotism through the Military Training and ROTC Program of- fered by this school. This unique opportunity is available only at Gloucester High School within the North Shore area. Ox er the years most of the local government and many others who have gone on to distinguished state, federal and military careers can trace their initial leadership training back to this institution ' s ROTC Program. It will be to the benefit of this ci- ty, school and future students if this program continues for another 100 years. Left to Right: Maj. Germain Wheeler (Executive Officer), Capt. Three of the runners were named to the top 20 in the Northeastern Conference. Everyone on the team attained their best times this season. In particular, three runners ran under 16:00 minutes at Ravenswood. On the contrary, Allan Fosberry was lost to the ranks of the injured for any post season meets. The team felt that they had a good season. Pat lends his title to Steve Verga as the “honorary co-captain. Pat Donnelly and George Swanson (Steve Verga missing) 116 This years girl’s cross country team consisted of only 6 girls which is a comparatively small team. They came through the season with only one loss. Four of the six girls qualified as con- ference All-Stars. The team ended the five year winning streak of Swampscott and finished first in the conference meet. In a state wide meet the Gloucester team came in fifth place and progressed on to the All-States meet. Conference All-Stars are Kari Payne, Maresol Milham, Amy Powers and Erica Coles. Eh Spofford and Mary-Ellen Rose were the coaches for the 1985 season. The team’s offense, nicknamed the “Kraut Line,’’ combined for a record 30 team goals. This was more than the two preceeding years combin- ed. Seniors Schmidt, Van Auken, and Patti Weir led the line with the back up efforts of Juniors Debbie Mahoney, Jo-Jo Corrao, Marie Powers, Heather Moore, and Sophomore Elaine Loiacano. The quick defense turned back many attempts by strong teams and held its ground when it was most needed. Senior goalie Ro Novello and Mary- Ann Virgilio, along with Bridget West, led the defense. Supporting the defense were Juniors Kat- ja Litchfield, Christine Burns, and Jill Burnham. This year’s team overcame many obstacles. They had to deal with a difficult and dangerous playing field, and s small team with only a few substitutes. Despite these hardships, they played well against tough teams such as Danvers and Saugus and scored impressive vcitories over such teams as Beverly, Salem, Marblehead, and Swamp- scott. Although it was a team effort, this year’s seniors played a large role in the team’s success. The seniors accepted the challenge of being team leaders. They set an example for the rest of the team to follow . Captain Patti Wier displayed her ability and eourage by pit- ching in every game for the team, and on occasion pitching two, and three days in a row. Lisa Aptt, although injured for most of the season, constant- ly provided vocal inspiration for the rest of the team, and was able to play in the final games of the season. Katie Van Auken turned in a fine year in certerfield, making some very key defensive plays. Mary Beth Ingersoll, with her fine defensive play at shortstop and her consistent hatting, helped her team on numerous occasions. Both Katie and Mary Beth were selected starters on the Northeast Converence All-Star Team. Mary Ann Virgilio also filled in at first base toward the end of the season. High points of the season were being in first place on two separate occa- sions, and the low point was several late season losses which prevented the team from appearing in the state tournament. It was a different experience for the girls to be in a situation where they had to win to stay on top. Although it was a disappointment for the seniors, it was also a learning ex- perience for the players like Collen Gove, Jill Burnham, Mary Jane Favaz- za, and Terri Deltorchio, all of whom will return to the varsity next year. This year ' s seniors, both starters and returning players, are to be com- mended for their attitudes and their approach to the game of softball. They never stopped playing hard, and, instead of giving the usual 100%, con- tributed a consistent 200% effort throughout the season. WFNX m “KBye Bye to the Beeer Mugs and Wine” Sung to the tune of “Miss American Pie” Written by: James Ciolino Patrick Donnelly Joe Fitzgerald Chip Smith Jim Sperry A long, long time ago I can still remember how that music used to make me smile And I knew if I had my chance that J could make those people dance And maybe they’d be happy for a while. But February made me shiver With every paper I ' d deliver. Bad news on the doorstep I couldn’t take one more step I can’t remember if I cried when I heard about lost Senior Pride Something touched me deep inside the day the Beer Mugs died. So bye bye to the beer mugs and wine, I drove my Limo to the Prom, but 1 had to go dry. And Dr. Chuck was saying, “Don’t Drink and Drive, or this will be the day that you die this will be the day that you die. Now we don ' t like the Golden Rule And we think Chuck is getting cruel, and that handbook ain’t too cool. Now do you believe in G.H.S., and can learning really save your ass. And can you teach me to drink with class? Well Symonds pushed us to the brink He wants Graduation in the Rink He made sure there was no booze, Man I don’t dig the things you choose . . . I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck With a pint of whiskey and a pickup truck. But I knew I was out of luck the day the Beer Mugs died. And we were singin . . . Chorus! Now for ten years we’ve been on our own, and the Bud Brigade’s all but unknown But that’s not how it used to be when the jester sang for the king and queen With a bottle of Jim Beam, and a voice that came from you and me. Oh, and while Chuck was looking down, I took a hit of Royal Crown The Classroom was adjourned, but the Beer Mugs weren’t returned. And while Wilson read a book on Marx, Cusick tried to get it sparked And we drank Pepsi in the park The day the Beer Mugs died. And we were singin . . . Chorus! Helter-Skelter in a summer swelter, Jim Brennan flew off to a fallout shelter, eight days left and passing fast Lord, we wanted it on the grass, but the Doctor tried for an 0 Maley pass The jester’s on the blue line with his cast The Graduate’s air was sweet perfume While the band played a marchy tune We all got up to dance, but we never go the chance. Cause the Principal tried to take the field But the Senior class refused to yield Do you recall what was revealed the day the Beer Mugs died. And we were singin’ . . . Chorus! Oh and now we’re all in one place. The Senior Class is just takin’ up space, with no sense now to start again So come one. Chuck be liberal. Chuck think quick You can’t hint booze in that yearbook pic Cause drinking is the Devil’s only friend. Oh and as we watched him from the stage. His hands were clenched in fists ot rage. No Angel born in Hell, could break Doc Symonds spell. Pencil holders we got Prom night, which isn t really all that right, I saw Symonds laughing with delight the day the Beer Mugs died. And we were singin . Chorus! And we were singin’ bye bye to the Gloucester High i ve got my Diploma, now I’m gonna get high And Dr. Chuck can just sit back and cry, cause this will be the day I say Bye, This will be the day I say bye . . . We all learned as we went along, including Mr. Walsh, who provided continuous support of our ef- forts. He managed to keep us going, especially at deadlines and during those last dragging weeks of school. He’s not the only one deserving appreciation though. We had a good staff and we worked hard. Some of us contributed more than others, and deserve special thanks. Meanwhile, the others . . . We feel that we’ve given you an honest representa- tion of our class in it’s senior year. We’ve tried to cap- ture some of your fondest memories in this book, but obviously we couldn’t have gotten them all. There is one thing that we can be sure of doing though, and that is wishing you all the best of luck and successes in the future.
