It is a chemistry lab filled with smoke , a boiler room without hot water , a new wing flooded. It is books , pencils , pens , paper , desks , chairs — everything is used by people. It is water bubblers , auditoriums , concession stands , cafeterias , staff offices. It is paper in the wastebaskets , food in the kitchen , intercoms on the walls , lavatories covered with graffiti , stains on the ceilings. It is the football field , the track , die parking lot , the project adventure course , the tennis courts. The school is a structure — built by man and nature. ... A school is a structure . . . A school is people. What is a school ? What does it represent? By the time he graduates , the student knows many answers — to finite ideas and abstract ones as well. The staff of the 1976 Flicker porposes no single solution to our introductory problem. Instead , we will present our school through a variety of perspectives. Then , perhaps , each student may arrive at a better understanding of our institution — Gloucester High School. 15 Teacher: Whoever would be a teacher of man let him begin by teaching himself before teaching others: and let him teach by example before teaching by word. For he who teaches himself and rectifies his own ways is more deserving of respect and reverence than he who would teach others and rectify their ways. We had reached the first floor at last! The class began to gain the spirit it had lacked before. Even after we have left the halls of GHS forever, people will always remember the Class of ’76 for the red-’n- white striped bleachers at Newell Stadium . . . our fearless class officers, what would we do without them?! SAT’s, application deadlines, scholarships — we all began to realize their importance. Research papers, tri- gonometry and the periodic chart had again entered our lives. But we were care-free, too. Remember the morning gatherings in the lobby . . . our front row seats in the audito- rium (no more balconies for us)! . . . the laughter and gossip at lunch . . . and the food! (pork chop patties and spinach?) Glimpses of the photographer lurking th roughout the halls, attempting to get a can- did of any unsuspecting senior. How ’bout the cake sales and raffles, and pep rallies, where Pink Panthers were stomped by Fisher- men. Our memories include cramming for exams and wondering why we chose French IV, instead of Basketweaving I, to fill up that free block ... the week-long wait for the sound of the 2:15 bell on Friday, followed by the usual moan of It’s Friday, but there’s nothing to do!” . . . the protest strike, a test of our new administration, for a less strict dis- cipline code, and that same day, the near riot” at the Newburyport football game. Remember the gangsters, clowns, and Rag- gedy Ann and Andies at the Halloween dance . the annual get-your-man-before-the- other-girl-does” race for the Sadie Hawkin’s Dance! Each girl wanted to be sure that she made the right choice ... the measuring for caps and gowns . . . the Xmas Semi-formal r ■■ J W|L n ■ ■■ . ■ ' • v •- and the meal that was served on paper plates! Finally, it was 1976 and now seniors, when absent from school, could use the ol’ legiti- mate excuse — senioritis. How can you forget the hockey team, which under a new coach, reached the conference play-offs . . . Fifties Day, when girls in bobby sox and saddle shoes again filled the corridors of GHS . . . B block in the library with the daily threat Get to work or you’ll have to go back to your study hall!!” It was the day-to-day final countdown of remaining school days . . . friends being accepted to distant colleges . . . melting snow and the arrival of the baseball season . . . frequent daydreams, followed by the inevitable question Where will I be NEXT year at this time?” . . . the class trip to Bermuda ... the excitement of the senior prom . . . the last day of school (so hard to believe!) . . . graduation rehearsal and the following caravan headed towards Good Har- bor Beach. And so our senior year passed . . . June 6 — our graduation day and final good-bye to GHS ... the day that will make our twelve years of homework and hardship seem worth- while. We’ll finally have to accept the leav- ing of old friends. But life goes on ... we realize that we can’t live in the Past, but only look back on it. Instead, we must look ahead, to the Future and to all the new experiences that it will hold for us. Although we’ll all go different ways after our senior year, we’ll still have our own spe- cial friends and we’ll always remain the CLASS OF ’76.” But, best of all, the years we spent at Gloucester High will be with us forever.
