Miss Mars hall also helps students in selecting their high school courses. MISS RUTH MARSHALL MISS MARY DEWOLFE, secretary in the guidance department MR. LEON SPRAGUE Mr. Leon Sprague is always ready to assist a student in choosing a course or selecting a college. Mr. Sprague has helped many appreciative students in obtaining jobs and in completing college admis- sion requirements. 13 FLOORMASTERS MR. J. VINCENT ELMER In addition to being a proficient Latin instructor, Mr. Elmer also has the responsibility of being the second-floor supervisor. To succeed in both of these positions requires both understanding and patience. Because of Mr. Elmer’s obvious possession of these qualities, along with his sense of humor, he has won the respect and honor of the students of G.H.S. MR. VERNON C. HOOPER Mr. Hooper serves both as third-floor floormaster and as a teacher of mechanical drawing. It is his duty to see that all matters on the third- floor run smoothly. Under his supervision are such matters as tardiness, absence and discipline of stu- dents on the third floor. Mr. Hooper is also in charge of the busing of Essex students. All G.H.S. students will fondly remember their days spent on the third floor with Mr. Hooper. MR. RICHARD C. BERGERON Mr. Bergeron’s duty is to maintain order on the first floor. Among Mr. Bergeron’s responsibilities are record- ing absences and tardiness and disci- pline of first floor students. Mr. Berg- eron is a busy man, yet has time to take our interests seriously. Mr. Berg- eron is also an English teacher. 14 THEY SERVE US Our Cafeteria Staff Miss Helen W. Morton is the dietician in charge of our cafeteria. Planning our meals and seeing that the cafeteria runs smoothly are among her tasks. Keeping the students of Gloucester healthy is certainly a full time job. Mrs. Olson our school nurse, whose doors are always open to the ill students at G.H.S., allevi- ates our minor aches, pains, and complaints, dis- penses sympathy, and is able to assist us in any emergency. We should like to thank her for her service to us. Without the help of the vast world of litera- ture and reference material available in the Ernest W. Fellows Library, the class of 1967 would have had a difficult time indeed com- pleting four successful years of high school. For the great variety of material offered, and most especially for the cheerful efficient as- sistance given us by our school librarian, Miss Dorothy Londergon, we seniors will be forever grateful. 15 ELEANOR W. THE 1966 lire 1 k scon This year the Gloucester High School Fishermen made a fine comeback over last year’s record and provided hun- dreds of enthusiastic fans with many thrilling games. Gloucester lost Friday’s opener with Swampscott in the air. The Fishermen couldn’t stop the Sculpin passing at- tack that clicked for three touchdowns nor could Gloucester do much passing of its own. But a determination to gain victory was still in the eyes of Gloucester’s Fighting Fishermen, and though losing to Newburyport 24-6, Glou- cester may have laid the foundation for a winning team in the future. Coach John Furey’s scrappy Fishermen moved the ball well against the Clipper Veterans in the first half of the Newburyport game. Marblehead used a double-edged sword to execute Gloucester 27-6 on a sultry Saturday afternoon at Spanish War Veterans Field. Joe Chianciola passed down to the Marblehead 12, before Marblehead caught up with him. The play began with quarterback Jim Goodhue passing to end, Pete Natti, who lateralled to Chianciola. Covering 45 yards, the razzle dazzle maneuver set up the Fishermen’s lone TD. In the fourth game of the year, Gloucester took the first step on the long road back to football glory by whipping Woburn 22-14. This great victory was a real morale booster for Gloucester. This was evident with the 54th meeting between Beverly and Gloucester, traditional rivals, ending in a thrilling 6-6 tie. Outstanding on defense all afternoon, Gloucester’s Wayne Jackson broke through to dump Beverly for a .1 k : I score I A | lie I, Benue: Igi, I | it! c: I 11 9 Mt 80 ) FISHERMEN [Ik three yard loss. Jackson was also a key man in pass defense which limited Beverly to four completions in 15 tries. The fighting Red and White kept Gloucester scoring high against Peabody 12-6. Gloucester’s winning touch- down came on the pass to Don Riley which Jim Goodhue slipped between the Peabody defense. Riley continued into end zone to complete the 34 yard play with teammate Jack Palazzola rushing in to help block. Riley set up the score with an interception. With more determination than ever, the Fishermen plunged forward. Leading the Fishermen in rushing, Co-cap- tain Joe Chiancola picked up 57 yards in 16 carries against Amesbury Saturday. He also accounted for the G.H.S. score in the 8-0 win, the first touchdown of his carear. A struggle between G.H.S. and Winthrop ended in a very close victory for Gloucester High. Scoring only after the first half had ended, Gloucester nipped Winthrop 8-6 before a Veterans Day crowd estimated at 3,100. The Fish- ermen pushed Withrop all over the muddy field of Newell Stadium. Gloucester is known for its good sportsmanship, strong determination and drive and also for its excellent coach- ing; but not even a return to the single wing could prevent Gloucester from losing 36-6 to Danvers before a stand- ng crowd at Dr. Deering Field on Thanksgiving Day. It is the unforgettable strength of character our boys possessed that made our team so great. Their sweat, tears, cars of courage, and thrilling victories surely made our G.H.S. football team truly a team to be proud of! School spirit begins with sports! And the Gloucester High School cheerleaders have contributed greatly to the spirit at all football games and pep rallies during the past year. Using new techniques in cheerleading, the Fisher- men cheerleaders have boosted team participation and stu- dent body interest at all sport activities. Even when the team’s spirits were low, the cheering squad bounced up to put new spark into the game. Fresh new uniforms were added in the traditional style, with red and white pom-pom shakers. All through the year they have given their time and stamina to promote the loyalty which Gloucester High stu- dents have for their school. A GREAT SEASON After many hours spent at practice and with the able guidance of their coach, Mr. Canniff, the GHS hockey team opened their season with a well-earned victory against Danvers. The boys made this game a stepping stone to their undefeated record of 12-0-4. Pride filled the hearts of many, but not as much as their coach’s for this year the GHS hockey squad presented Mr. Canniff with his 100th win — what a thrilling and memorable game! Because of their strong sportsmanship and skillful tactics under the leadership of co-captains John DelTorchio and Dick MacNeil, the “Flying Fishermen” gained a berth in the State Tournament. In the tournament, their first round pitted them against Xavier. Despite their natural nervousness, they came back to win the game in the last 35 seconds. Gloucester’s first in a series of shut-outs was the Danvers game in which four different players kept the six-year tradition by defeating Danvers 5-0. The GHS team, always at its best, was at its greatest against Marblehead. In this great comeback, the players exhibited their qualities of championship. The Lynn Classical game was a memorable one, especially for John DelTorchio, who scored a “hat-trick plus one.” Skating over their opponents throughout the game, Gloucester was victorious 4 to 1 ! Retaining the North East Conference crown last year, GHS shut out Swamp- scott, depending largely upon sophomore Riley’s hat trick. The contributions to the success of the ’66-67 team were outstanding — the senior players worked constantly as a spirited team, the underclassmen are remembered for their high scoring and promising playing. 92 SENIOR PLAYERS ED CURRIER— Goalie WOODY COOK— Wing PAUL (SPEAR-CHUCKER) JOHNSON— Defense JOE CHIANCIOLA— Wing DICK MacNEIL — Wing JOHN DELTORCHIO— All Star JOHN MURRAY— Center JACK ALEXANDER— Wing 93 COACH AND CAPTAINS CAPTAIN DICK MACNEIL, COACH JACK CANNIFF, CAPTAIN JOHN DELTORCHIO THE SCORES GLOUCESTER 4 DANVERS 0 GLOUCESTER 5 WINTHROP 0 GLOUCESTER 3 WOBURN 1 GLOUCESTER 5 AMESBURY 0 GLOUCESTER 2 MARBLEHEAD 2 GLOUCESTER 5 SWAMPSCOTT 0 GLOUCESTER 1 MALDEN CATHOLIC 1 GLOUCESTER 3 SALEM 1 GLOUCESTER 2 BEVERLY 2 GLOUCESTER 4 CLASSICAL 1 GLOUCESTER 3 ENGLISH 1 GLOUCESTER 3 ST. Under the leadership of co-captains Mike Wood and Carl Caldeira, and the coaching of Robert Welch, the team tied for third place in the Northeastern Con- ference. Good rebounding by Mike MacLeod, Larry Woodman, and Carl Caldeira, out- standing shooting by Tom Middleton, and spirited playing by Mike Wood and Tom Feener and Junior Larry Brown, made the G.H.S. team. It was a hard season for G.H.S.; and most fans remember the “heart-breaks” that G.H.S. suffered. We’ll also remember the distinguished team that the ' 66-61 season produced — junior Tom Middleton was second highest scorer of the league, and the remainder of the varsity players were always an outstanding example of good sportsmanship and ability. 102 LET’S GO!
