Mr. Hagstrom, head of the department, has launched this program in order that the student might be exposed to the newer methods in mathematics. Beginning in the freshman year, this course will be worked into the whole math program of some college- bound students. Win- ter has softened into spring; spring has blos- somed forth to summer; summer has ripened into autumn ; and autumn has again w ithered into winter. For most of us, the three hundred and sixty-five days of 1963 were full of the usual trials and triumphs of everyday life; but one of us knew only seventeen hours of that ye r. The first string. A look of anguish on the coaches’ faces. OUR TEAM’S RECORD Pascucci, stop that man! Gloucester — Newburyport: Beating Newburyport 16-6 gave Gloucester its first win of the season. The Fisher- men received the opening kick and scored. The T. D. came as a result of John Burnett’s 14-yard pass to Roderick. Following the kick-off after Noble’s safety, the Fishermen gained 48 yards. Riley capped the drive on a 2-yard scoring play, and Noble ended the game’s scoring with a safety. Gloucester Salem : A fired-up Gloucester team handed Salem their only defeat of the season. The Fishermen marched 53 yards in 5 plays for the tally. Roderick sparked their series with a 26-yard run. Soon Riley bolted over from 9 yards out. Roderick scored on a 3- ard run after a fumble. With 2 quick touchdowns, Salem made the half-time score 14-13. The Fishermen lengthened their lead in the 3rd period and the final score was 26-19. Marblehead Gloucester: The Fisherman found their 2nd loss of the year in a 20 to 0 game with Marble- head. The first half proved unsuccessful for both teams. The second half, however, sent Gloucester close to a scoring position, but Marblehead took the ball over dominating the game throughout. Beverly — Gloucester : Gloucester started the game glo- riously, but was soon overcome by the Beverly wall. The Fishermen s only two touchdowns came when Cal Grimes ran 20 yards on a pass from Ben Smith and when Joe Palazzola made 88-yard touchdown run. Even battling the hard-hitting Fishermen. Beverly managed to win with a score of 36-15. Peabody — Gloucester: Peabody defeated Gloucester 21- 6. The Fishermen scored first on a 4-yard pass from Smith to Roland and a 58-yard drive. The fishermen were not long in the lead, as Peabody forged ahead as soon as they gained possession of the ball. Melrose — Gloucester : The Red Raiders stumped Glou- cester 42-6. Scoring twice in the first period and once in the second, Melrose led 22-0 at the half. During the final minutes of the fourth period, after an 86- vard run by Paul Riley, Ben Smith went over the line for Gloucester’s only touchdown. Gloucester — Saugus: Gloucester defeated Saugus 28-26 for their third win of the season. The Sachems scored first, but the Fishermen did not trail long. Paul Riley scored on a 54-yard pass. Saugus scored two more times, but Roderick and Wogan pushed the Fisher- men on to victory. Paul Riley finds an obstacle. Coaches confer during practice. Referee prepares to blow whistle. A rough and tumble play. 132 Coach Ross encourages player. Boys cheer their teammates on. THANKSGIVING DAY GAME Where’s the ball ? This Thanksgiving game is the last for some. The Fishermen, failing to capitalize on three scoring opportunities, lost the Turkey Day game to Arlington 22-8. Scoring once in the first period and again in the second, Arlington took a 14-0 lead. After an Arlington punt, the Fishermen marched 60 yards in three plays Preparing to pass. for a touchdown. The halftime score was 14-8, Arling- ton. After the half, Gloucester was a fired-up football team but could not score. Arlington iced the game with a touchdown in the fourth period. Get him down ! ! G.H.S. HOCKEY CHAMPIONS 11 Ned Ross, John Burnett, and Punky Smith, three of our champions with their trophies. Before the start of the NSHL season, the G. H. S. hockey squad scored a victory over the Bowdoin freshmen and suffered two losses to Northwood Prep while at Lake Placid. In the league opener, the Canniffmen defeated Salem. Gloucester’s first loss of the season was to St. Mary’s by a score of 3-2, with only one other loss, which was a 4-3 defeat by Marble- head. With the defeat of Woburn, Gloucester became the “undisputed champion” of the North Shore Hockey League. In two well-played games, the Canniffmen de- feated Swampscott and Marblehead to win the play-offs. This was an honor never reached before by Gloucester. In addition, ben Smith was awarded the trophy for the outstanding defense man of the year for the NSHL. A truly great season came to an anticlimactic end Tuesday, March 3, when Dedham knocked Gloucester out of the State Tournament. It was an unexpectedly early end to a great year, but certainly even this defeat does not take away from the wonderful record the team made this season. Congratulations to the NSHL Cham- pions! ! Mr. Brown and Mr. Canniff, two of the best hockey coaches a school could have. LINEMEN Jim Walen, Paul Riley, and Quimby Osier form a high scoring line. Basketball The G.H.S. basketball team was not up to par during the ’63-’64 season! The fresh- men opened up strongly with a victory over Haverhill, but from then on the road went downhill. Getting the season off on the right foot, the Fishermen beat Haverhill by a narrow margin of 2 points although the Hillies were favored. Just before the final bell. Jerry Cook connected for the winning points of the game. Although the boys tried their hardest, bad luck and the superb playing of the other teams caused them to lose the rest of the games. In the last game against Peabody. Captain Jerry Cook scored 37 points, his all-time high. Jerry along with his senior classmates. Dick Clark, and Tom Doucette, displayed some fine ball-handling which caused their opponents many anxious moments. Although things were not stacked in favor of the G.H.S. hoopsters this year, the players displayed fine team effort and sportsmanship.
