It has provided food, vocations, and • entertainment for Gloucester citizens since the establishment of the first settle- . ment on Cape Ann. The angry gray churning during a nor’easter and the majestic rolling of white breakers on a sparkling beach are each familiar to us all. This year the Flicker is taking you % on a brief tour of a few well-known views of the ocean in Gloucester. We hope that now, and years from now, wlien you open your 1963 Flicker , that you will remember your class- mates, Gloucester High School, and Gloucester - by the sea. ■ m m w w i i It _ IZ 4 — - I — E§ u fexr ' 1 iisls J LJiiil ■■■■■ UlLLI LLl UXl ULlJLt UJLM t J U TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION ACTIVITIES UNDERCLASSES SENIORS VOCATIONAL SPORTS Am A Uv rUCTtrwv 1 S oojco UoUJ oaxC i wvj - v- r yv -0 i bt T c | t e - Uo u —iz. . For many years the GHS cheerleaders have been shouting this to the crowds. Now the Class of 1963 would like to cheer formally the man who has served for 28 years at Gloucester High School as a coach — - Norman C. Ross. FOR HE’S THE COACH WHO ' S REALLY GRAND! “Nate’’ has announced his plan to retire as head coach at the end of this school year: he will continue as an economics teacher and as the director of athle- tics. The man with the battered gray hat has become a living legend for the teams and young men he has trained. IS HE ROUGH? IS HE TOUGH? NO! IN ate s lockeroom lorensics are well-known; but it is also well-known that while he criticizes the boys’ mistakes, he is quick to praise the efforts of his players. FOR HE’S THE COACH WHO’S GOT THE STUFF! What does it take to be a man who is well-known, liked, and respected in every circle: among teach- ers, students, and athletes? Perhaps no one knows; but “Nate’’ Ross has it. Mr. Ross, the Class of 1963 salutes you with this dedication, and wishes you every success. We are sure our praises are echoed by all your teams and associates. Coach Ross and physician Mr. Ross with two of his assistants, Mr. O’Neil and Mr. Canniff. . Mr. Thompson attended Salem State College and went on to grad- uate work at Boston University. In 1928 he came to Gloucester High School as a teacher of bookkeeping and accounting. After one year, he was raised to the position of floor- master. Upon completion of the new high school, Mr. Thompson was the second floor supervisor until 1947, when he moved to the first floor as vice-principal. Dur- ing his years at Gloucester High School, he was also the faculty manager of athletics. In 1954 Mr. Thompson assumed the responsible position as assist- superintendent of the Glouces- public schools, and was pro- m 1962 to superintendent. Gloucester public Schools GLOUCESTER. Bonnie Hurd, president, and Mr. Weiler. advisor, arrange debates among club members on current problems. 43 J j ractice maAes perfect in a fie c s. ORCHESTRA Under the direction of Mr. Puff, this group of fifteen talented musicians furnish all the music necessary to make the school assemblies complete. In addition, they also play for other school and civic functions. These stu- dents’ main purpose is to stimulate and maintain a vivid interest in all orchestral music. Any student with the ability to play an orchestral instrument at the intermediate level is welcome to become a part of this organization. GIRLS’ RIFLE TEAM Sergeant Lovard Clenney is the su- pervisor of the Girls’ Rifle Team, and he teaches them good sportsmanship, good marksmanship, and safe hand- lin ' ! of firearms. The sixteen members of the team, headed by Captain Marion Ryan, fire in the N.R.A. postal match and compete against various college and high school teams. 44 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CLUB The Benjamin Franklin Club was founded to further the interest and knowledge of students in the printing industry. Composed of boys in the print shop, the club, which is sponsored by Mr. Vail, makes a scholarship avail- able to a graduate of the print shop; this helps many deserving hoys further their education as printers. CHESS CLUB Although nearly as much time is spent on informal dis- cussions as chess, anyone in- terested in chess can learn the game, improve his play, or prepare for a coming tourna- ment every Tuesday afternoon in room 330 under Mr. Wise’s watchful eye. The group, whose purpose is to teach the twenty-four members the exer- cise of judgment in sport, conducts tournaments with other schools, and teaches any- one who wishes to learn to play chess. 45 (So ne groups culiioale eacfersAip. fed • — y mrnrnm f -v 1 IK Tbu M - N ' 4, mm ZODIACS CLUB Numbering twenty-five, the members of this comparatively new astronomy and astrology club meet together each month to discuss the heavens and become better acquainted with them. The sole requirement for member- ship in this club is an avid interest in astronomy and astrology. Under the direction of Mrs. 0. Myrtle Wardrup, the group enjoys such activities as listening to lectures given by special guest speakers, enjoying their annual Christmas party, and making a telescope which is to he used by the school. LEADERS’ CLUBS The main purpose of the Leaders’ Club is to develop leadership and sportsmanship in their members. Mem- bers. consisting of freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior boys and girls, assist and demonstrate in physical education classes. Girls Leaders’ Club 46 D£e magic of the stage lures many. STAGE CREW As a member of the stage crew, one might hear, “Dim those lights!” Members of the stage crew work behind the scenes at all of our assemblies and also run the slide and movie projectors used in the classroom. The stage crew is under the direction of Mr. Weiler. Mr. JVeiler works closely with the Thespian group in the presentation of their productions. NATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY Future actors, stage designers, and directors may well get their start at G.H.S. as members of the National Thespian Society. Miss Surrette, the club Sponsor, helps new and old members learn about the theatre through active participation in the production of the annual plays. The Christmas plays and public performances produced by these active young people are often the high-lights of the school year. 47 dome find practice Jor a business career , STUDENT SECRETARIES Seniors who have majored in Business Education volunteer their services as secretaries to members of the faculty. They gain valuable and practical experience by typing, filing, bookkeeping, and taking shorthand and dictation. Their efforts are greatly appreciated by the faculty as they help with some of the time-consuming tasks. At the end of the school ye ar, one of the girls is chosen Student Secretary of the Year, a great honor for these future business women. FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA Under the supervision of Mrs. 0. Myrtle Wardrup, the Future Nurses of America are given an early oppor- tunity to look at the nursing profession. During the school year, the girls hear lectures by public health nurses, registered nurses, and student nurses. 21 )i iers develop ineir in eres s in science BETA BETA BIOLOGY CLUB The Beta Beta Biology Club is open to students who have an average of seventy-five percent or above and who are interested in science. The group sponsors special speakers, projects, a Christmas party, a spring club trip, and the annual school science fair. These activities serve to make the students more science-minded. Mrs. War- drup advises this group, one of the largest in the school, having two hundred and thirty members. SAILING CLUB An interest in sailing is the primary requirement for membership in the Sailing Club, under the direction of Mr. Bruno. These young navigators study the history and art of sailing, and put their learning to work on week- end cruises. This club is informative and gives its members many hours of enjoyment. 49 Service — witf a smife. JUNIOR VOLUNTEERS The Junior Volunteers is a group of girls who possess a willingness to work and a desire to help at the hospital. The girls bring around to the patients a cart containing candy, cosmetics, toys, stationery, etc. and deliver flowers, mail, and newspapers to the correct department. At the end of the year, Miss Gale, the club’s advisor, awards pins and certificates to the girls who have devoted twenty-five or fifty hours to the hospital. f fese groups are organized, Sul stiff 50 J tarcf wor A b uj many ROTC DAVID LUFKIN JAY SMITH FRANK DULEY Artist ROSAMOND HYDE Careful planning goes into all of the sections. GLOUCESTER VOCATIONAL SCHOOL Founded in 1940, the Gloucester Voca- tional School has been preparing interested boys for immediate employment as printers, carpenters, electricians, machinists, and automobile mechanics. The Vocational School, under the direction of Mr. Harold B. Geary, fully equips the boys to meet the challenges of advanced training in in- stitutions of higher learning. Mr. Harold B. Geary, a dedicated mem- ber of Gloucester High School for over forty years, received his Bachelor of Sci- ence (in education) and his Masters of Education degrees from Fitchburg State College. We are also fortunate to have Mrs. June De Wolfe as secretary in the Vocational School office, and as the treasurer for the entire school. AUTOMOTIVE Under the direction of Mr. John Budrow, the boys in the Automo- tive Shop are taught all phases of automobile repair and service works. The boys are thoroughly instructed in automotive theory, including tools, equipment, engine repairs, transmissions, clutches, brakes, steering gears, and rear axles. Graduates from this shop are well equipped to be automobile mechanics. 120 while carpenters Suihcf their stairways to success. CARPENTRY Through the instructions of Mr. Gaspar Lewis, the boys in the Carpentry Shop are instructed in the proper use and care of wood- working tools, machines, and ma- terials. Mr. Kenneth Stick- ney teaches estimation of materials and construction details in related courses. 121 VOCATIONAL SCHOOL PRINTING Under the direction of Mr. Harvey R. Vail, the print shop prepares many boys for their lifetime vocation. The hoys are taught about the cutting of stock, color, print, platen press, bindery opera- tions, automatic cylinder presses, and the use of different papers and inks. Related courses cover trade English, layout and design, printer’s math, and trade science. Much of their experience comes from the printing of football programs, tickets, graduation programs and many other ma- terials used by the school. Instructions in the testing and repairing of telephone wires, motors, generators, circuits, currents, and wiring are given to all the electrical shop boys. 123 MACHINES Under the guidance and instruction of Mr. Albert Hoffman, boys in the Machine Shop receive experience by making tools for their own use in the shop and making repairs in the school. These boys also perform services for private citizens and business firms. In related courses, Mr. George Perry instructs the boys in math, science, and drawing. Last year the Machine Shop was moved into the Vocational School’s new wing. Nate believes in the adage that football builds men and one has to ac- cept bitter defeat as well as sweet victory. Two other qualified leaders were co-captains Paul and Sal Galante. Early in the game Beverly tallied three times and scored on conversion, taking a 20-0 lead over the underdogs. Gloucester then made a powerful comeback. The Fishermen’s first score was earned by a 20-yard pass from Ben Smith to Ray Roderick. Ray scored again on a 12-yard effort. Later Cal Grimes hit pay dirt on a 5-yard run. Danvers tal- lied early in the second quarter on that hot, slug- gish day. Later in the fourth quarter, Paul Landry and the two Noble brothers pounced on a Danvers fumble. This set up the equalizing touchdown scored by Paul Riley on a 32-yard romp. During the final minutes, a field goal attempt was tried by Ronny Ryan, but fell short. During these two years, the Bri- gade has been undergoing constant changes at the hands of Captain Sutton. At the present time, he is attending Bos- ton University where he is studying for his Master’s Degree in English. This is, by no means, the limit of his education. His background and teaching techniques help to make his classes in Military Science very interesting. Under his guidance, the Gloucester High School’s ROTC Brigade will be one of the best in the country by the end of his tour of duty here. Our military instructors accept the responsibility SGT. JOHN R. McNAMARA Sgt. McNamara is the other new member of the military staff. He arrived here from Fort Devens in August of 1962. Our new cadet colonel then strolls through the ranks of his command watching the way the members of the brigade drill or inspecting their uniforms. David has done much to deserve his rank. In his sophomore year, he was one of the three sophomores in the individual drill and a member of the bayonet- wielding Company F prize squad. He participated in the Haskell Drill competition and won the Corliss medal for being the Outstanding Sophomore Cadet. In recognition of his ability and effort, he was promoted to the rank of corporal. Last year Corporal Lufkin came in second in the Individual Drill. He was again a member of the prize squad from Company F. He was a member of the Honor Guard, now the Gloucester Grenadiers. David was personally congratulated by Commander Alan Shepard for winning the Haskell Senior Medal. ROTC softball, basketball and volleyball have taken David’s time too; and he stood Company F in good stead on Sport Field Day. He is a member of the Rifle Team, having joined in his sophomore year. Last year he was on the varsity team, and this year he is the secretary-treasurer. CADFT COLONEL DAVID A. LUFKIN 158 who are in c iarae of ine ) riaacfe. LT. COLONEL KENNETH L.
