In Geography and World History they learn about man’s enviroment and the development of his culture. United States History and Civics teach pupils their American heritage and prepares them to be the voting citizens of the future. Out of seventy-seven teachers and six or more administrative personnel, there are twenty-seven with Master’s Degrees, some in more than one field. The calibre of education maintained by this teaching staff ranks our high school with the leaders of New England. The Conant report on secondary schools gave testimony to this effect, and students who go on to col- lege from Gloucester find they are well equipped to hold their own with the best. Through our four years under their guidance, we have at times differed with them, but summing it all up now, we pretty well agree that they have done a good job for us. Considering the fact that science and industry are luring so many good teachers away to better paying jobs, we feel grateful in- deed for men and women of such superior ability as our A-I Faculty. The long awaited proofs have arrived. SAWYER FREE LIBRARY GLOUCi EER, MASS. 01930

and an Awareness of the World Around Us Well, class, Will it expand? SCIENCE DEPARTMENT To make students aware of the world around them is one of the primary goals of the science department at G.H.S. Under the direction of Mr. Robert W. Card, this department offers a variety of courses suited to every interest. In general science the beginnings of the physical sciences such as matter, heat and elements, are studied. These principles are later pursued more ex- tensively in College Physics and Chemistry. Biology and Physiology are studies of living organisms, from an amoeba to the human body, while Practical Physics and Practical Chemistry teach more about the applications of scientific ideas to every day life.
