Dr. L. Munro Grandy has served as superintendent of schools since 1952. He has had much teaching and administrative experience in other school sys- tems, making him an excellent superintendent in Gloucester. We, the class of 1961, wish to express our gratitude to Mr. Grandy for his hard work for G.H.S. Superintendent C Munro Grandy and Assistant Superintendent y. Stanley Zhompson Mr. J. Stanley Thompson, a graduate of G.H.S., furthered his education at Salem State Teachers College, and at Boston University, returned to G.H.S., and served for 26 years as teacher, floor master, Faculty Athletic Manager, and Vice-Prin- cipal. Next he assumed his present position as an Assistant Superintendent of Schools who is well versed in the ways of Gloucester High. Principal Arthur JV. Smith A school is only as good as the principal who guides it. At Gloucester High School we are fortunate to have Mr. Arthur N. Smith, a dedicated and able man in his field. Mr. Smith graduated from Gloucester High in 1929 and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree and Master of Arts Degree from Harvard University. In 1939, he received his Master of Education Degree from Tufts University. He has been serving Gloucester High School for the past twenty-four years as teacher, then head of the His- tory Department, and in 1951 as principal. We certainly appreciate his qualified leadership and wish him well in the future. Mr. Smith checks school details with his secretary, Miss Olive Hodgkins. Vice-Principal Robert S. K arc her Vocational Director Marold it Cjeary Our Director of the Gloucester Vocational School, Mr. Harold B. Geary, graduated from Fitchburg State College where he received his Bachelor of Science (Ed.) and Master of Edu- cation Degrees. Gloucester Vocational School, founded in 1940, trains boys as electricians, machinists, printers, auto mechanics, and carpenters. It prepares them for immediate work in their chosen field or equips them to go on for further learning. The school has been very successful under the fine direction of Mr. Geary. Our Vice-principal, Mr. Robert E. Karcher, has certainly done an out- standing job during his first year in that capacity. Of course, he is no stranger to us because he has been at Gloucester High School as gym teacher, science teacher, and assistant football coach during the past five years. Mr. Karcher received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education Degrees from Boston University. Guidance Department Our guidance counselors, Miss Ruth Mar- shall, Mr. Leon Sprague, and Mr. Robert Natti have helped us to solve problems which at times seemed unsurmountable to us. They have helped us through our years ' at Gloucester High School, informed us of school requirements and scholarship oppor- tunities, counseled us individually, and shown many of us the road to happiness and success. Miss Marshall, Mr. Natti, Seated, Mr. Sprague Mrs. Curcuru keeps everything running smoothly. Director of Extra- Curricular Activities Marjorie H. (fate Miss Marjorie H. Gale, Director of Extracurricular Activities, is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Boston University where she received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts De- grees. Miss Gale has the responsibility of all extracurricular activities except R.O.T.C. and sports which leaves, as we know, many tiring and thankless jobs. She has done her job well, and in addition to this, she is one of our fine teachers. To you, Miss Gale, we wish to express our deepest appreciation for your sincere interest, ready assistance, and unlimited patience. floor Supervisors J st floor Mr. Kareker 2nd floor Mr. Elmer 3rd floor Mr. Hooper Mr. Karcher and Mr. Elmer discuss business and Mr. Hooper’s illness. Out of seventy-seven teachers and six or more administrative personnel, there are twenty-seven with Master’s Degrees, some in more than one field. The calibre of education maintained by this teaching staff ranks our high school with the leaders of New England. The Conant report on secondary schools gave testimony to this effect, and students who go on to col- lege from Gloucester find they are well equipped to hold their own with the best. Through our four years under their guidance, we have at times differed with them, but summing it all up now, we pretty well agree that they have done a good job for us. Considering the fact that science and industry are luring so many good teachers away to better paying jobs, we feel grateful in- deed for men and women of such superior ability as our A-I Faculty. SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT The Social Studies Department under the direction of Mr. John C. Carter, offers courses in World History, U.S. History, Civics, Geography, and American De- mocracy. Through these subjects, students learn how men live with other men, and to understand the com- plexities of our modern world. In Geography and World History they learn about man’s enviroment and the development of his culture. United States History and Civics teach pupils their American heritage and prepares them to be the voting citizens of the future. Seniors taking American Democracy become more aware of American domestic problems. Other students study international relations and foreign policy. and an Awareness of the World Around Us Well, class, Will it expand? SCIENCE DEPARTMENT To make students aware of the world around them is one of the primary goals of the science department at G.H.S. Under the direction of Mr. Robert W. Card, this department offers a variety of courses suited to every interest. In general science the beginnings of the physical sciences such as matter, heat and elements, are studied. These principles are later pursued more ex- tensively in College Physics and Chemistry. Biology and Physiology are studies of living organisms, from an amoeba to the human body, while Practical Physics and Practical Chemistry teach more about the applications of scientific ideas to every day life. SECRETARIES The office secretaries, Miss Olive Hodgkins and Miss Catherine McEachern, are the people who keep the nerve-center of the school, the main office, running smoothly and efficiently. Perhaps the people who keep the longest hours at school, with the ex- ception of custodians, are the secretaries, who are in the office working early and late, keeping records straight and thus keeping the whole school shipshape. Without their services, both the faculty and the student body would suffer. The school is indebted to the hard work that is put out by the two main office secretaries. JOSEPH E. MAUGER, JR. . . . The music department offers to all upperclassmen a course in music apprecia- tion which brings to the students an understanding of music, theory., and various composers. In addition to this, General Chorus is open to all students. During its weekly meetings, students enjoy group singing. The Glee Club, which meets twice a week, is made up of selected students, whose voices meet the requirements. This group and the A Cappella Choir, which sings without benefit of accompaniment, are well known for their excellent work. I tti the Homemakers of Zomorrow HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT Yum, yum!” Tantalizing odors, floating down from the 3rd floor, are one way that the school learns about the activities of the Home Economics Department. The girls in the food classes, under the supervision of Mrs. Jane Moginot, prepare the refreshments for the faculty Christmas tea and the National Honor Society teas. Through these and other projects, such as break- fasts, lunches, and the planning of meals for guests, the girls learn how to be excellent cooks and poised hostesses. In addition to cooking, the planning of well-balanced menus and the buying of food prepare these young homemakers for the future. MARIO MORIELLO . . . Boston University . . . Sci- ence and Math. In this period of time, the teachers, Miss Nancy Currie and Mr. Robert Ritcey, instruct in the fundamentals of physical fitness neces- sary to all students. The basic principles of sports, such as basketball, tennis, softball, badminton, field hockey, soccer and archery are taught. From this training, many students continue playing on High School teams. In addition to sports, a variety of gymnastic equipment is available to each student dur- ing class and after school on certain days. Pupils are trained in skills necessary for employment as typists, stenographers, bookkeepers, machine operators, and general clerks, through courses in typing, bookkeeping, shorthand and machine practice. Miss Olga Williams, the department head, directs the instructions in these valuable courses which also prepare students to enter into further education in this field. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY In an impressive candle-lighting ceremony for the induction of new members, the criteria of leadership, scholarship, character, and service are cited as ideals of the Sherman B. Ruth Chapter of the National Honor Society. By selling candy daily after school, the members maintain a senior scholarship fund. There are several lectures and teas planned each year in ad- dition to monthly meetings. Miss Perry, head of the English department, is advisor to this worthy organi- zation. HONOR BUSINESS CLUB Who sells the G.H.S book covers during the school year? Why, of course, it is the Honor Business Club members directed by Mrs. LaFrance and Mr. Korob- kin. Its membership is similar to that of the National Honor Society. The members are in the business course or at least carrying two business subjects. Its purpose is to provide recognition for honor business students and to promote recreational, educational, and social activities. These are our future secretaries. Our Outstanding . JUNIOR ROTARIANS Junior Associates of Rotary International, better known to us as the Junior Rotarians, are the repre- sentatives of each class in the Rotary movement all over the world. These outstanding boys are chosen by a vote of the complete faculty. Besides the usual meetings conducted on a monthly basis, Rotarians often hold informal sessions at their homes to ac- quaint the boys with their occupations and guide them with their future careers. STEVENS BOOK REVIEWERS Elave you ever thought that book reviews can be fun? Well, the Stevens Reviewers do. The purpose of this club is to introduce to its members a varied program of reading. Under the direction of Miss Crowley, the members of this organization review current books both for the school publications and for their program for the school library. Look at all those books to read! Where are Steve and Mike? Citerary Zalents Mound Mere. FLASH Get your assignments in on time!” This cry is stressed weekly to the reporters by the Flash sponsor. Miss Taylor, and the co-editors. As a re- sult, students learn the im- portance of meeting deadlines and the way in which a news- paper is run. They also get a chance to improve their jour- nalism. The Flash appears weekly in the Gloucester Daily Times, and contains articles on recent assemblies, student ac- tivities, and other happenings of interest to the student body. Is that the Gloucester Daily Times? Beacon has publishing problems, too. BEACON Monday will be Beacon Day,” is a statement heard in all English classrooms twice each year. Beacon Day is the day on which contributions to the Beacon, our semi- annual literary magazine, are due. It has a staff divided in- to poetry, art, and literary com- mittees. The members of each committee read and comment on every contribution for his division. The final selections are edited by Mrs. Towne and Mr. Bergeron. The organiza- tion is designed to give people with a flair for writing an op- portunity to see their work in print. We Moth JCeam . . . SPANISH CLUB LATIN CLUB Latin may be a dead language, but that is no reason for there to be no interest in it. Un- der the direction of Mr. Holda, the Latin scholars of Gloucester High School try to learn more about the language and the Rom- ans who spoke it. En- glish is spoken at all meetings, but all plans are made in Roman style. C Habla Espanol ? Maybe you don’t but the members of the Spanish Club do. The purpose of the club is to help the members to attain a better under- standing of the lan- guage and the country of Spain. One of the club ' s main projects is the decoration of the third floor showcase. An interesting diver- sion of the club this year was the talk of Miss Mildred Frost- holm, the advisor, on her recent trip through Spain. Get the picture? Is there a present for me? GERMAN Sprechen Sie Deut- sch? asks Mr. Morgen- stern, the club advisor. If you do, you probably have some idea of what the German Club does. During the year, the members learn about dif- ferent customs of the German people by list- ening to German records and by watching movies and slides. German liter- ature also is stressed as well as a deeper study of the language itself. and Enjoy . FRENCH Parlez-vous F r a n- cais?” sounds like a familiar question be- tween two members of the French Club. Each member has a command of the language and con- versation usually flows quite fluently in French. At the end of the school year, the members plan a big picnic or party, which ends the year for the club. Mrs. Baer, who is a French teacher, is the advisor to the club. Have a nice trip to France, Mike. Make sure you give Bob and Jack the straight goods, Tim! World Affairs Interest Us. HISTORY The main purpose of the History Club is to promote interest in learning more about the history of the world, both past and present. Under the di- rection of Mr. Robbins, this organization is open for any student who is eager to learn more about the history of his own country and others. Mike, you ' re not paying attention ! You’ll never sell Geoff on that, Herm! INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Stimulating interest and discussion of cur- ent world affairs is the goal of this newly- formed organization which is sponsored by Mr. Feig. At its meet- ings, this group holds discussions and debates regarding problems in our modern world. Of- ten they get quite in- volved trying to find solutions to the dif- ferent issues. Our young Ambassadors AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE Walk together, talk together, O ye people of the earth, then and only then shall ye have peace.” This in- spiring phrase is the motto of the American Field Service, a truly inter- national organization. However, here at Gloucester High School, its prime purpose is to help keep the American Field Service exchange students happy. This group also sponsors an A.F.S. weekend in Gloucester late in the spring for the foreign students in this area. They also work very hard to raise money to bring the students here and to send our students abroad. The members of this organization have done much to help better understand- ings among all peoples of the earth. My, Isn ' t this a small world? PHYSICAL SCIENCE One of the outstanding projects of the Physical Science Club is the Science Fair held in March. As its major project, success was guaranteed because of the hard work and enthusiasm of each member. This was not all of its activities however, for, under the direction of the club ad- visor, Mrs. Nickerson, the members of the club par- ticipated in various inter- esting and educational trips. 47 (food Cuck for the future . . . This is the responsibility the members of the Future Teachers of America are willing to assume. The desire to be a teacher is the only qualification needed to join this organization. Under the guiding hands of Miss Willis, the supervisor of elementary schools, and Mr. Arthur N. Smith, principal of Gloucester High School, these students have had a chance to visit some schools in the Gloucester School system. They have also had an opportunity to sit in classes and watch the teachers in action. FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA Future Florence Nightingales got underway in full- steam this year. Under the guiding hands of Mrs. Wardrup, the girls are getting an early look at the profession which they have chosen. During the school year, the girls have been given a first aid course to prepare them for the future. Guest speakers, public health nurses, registered nurses, and student nurses will lecture to the girls about nursing for a career. Is there a doctor in the house? Zo Our Dedicated Ir lends. The orchestra opens each assembly with a lively march. The music is well rendered by the small group of enthusiastic musicians. In closing the assembly, the orchestra plays the school song which is followed by another march. THESPIANS Lights, camera, action are the familiar words that are characteristic of the National Thespian Society which provides the school as well as itself with well- performed entertainment. GLEE CLUB Gloucester, Gloucester every time, Gloucester by the sea.” Thus ends the refrain of the Gloucester High School Song sung by the Girls’ Glee Club. This group is comprised of girls chosen for quality in their voices and their ability to read music. Under the direction of Miss Moore, two musical productions are given each year, one at Christmas time and one in the spring. The girls also attend several concerts and fes- tivals during the school year. Girls, you really should be singing. STAGE CREW Cights, Cameras, Action . . Included in the related courses are printer’s math, layout and design, trade English, and trade sci- ence. Much of their experience comes from the printing they do for the school. Jn Victory and in Defeat Nate observes play from the sidelines First down G.H.S. Norman C. Ross, better known as Nate,” has just spent his twen- ty-fourth year as head coach of the G.H.S. football team. Nate” has become what is known as a permanent fixture at G.H.S. In his many years of coach- ing he has inspired many teams to the state championship. No season is a disappointment to Nate” because he holds the adage that football builds men. To accept bitter defeat as well as sweet victory is all a part of the game of life as well as the game of football according to our coach. The class of 1961 hopes that next year will be his most successful as he celebrates his silver anniversary at G.H.S. Oh, No ! Try the 44 reverse. Nate sends in play. Give me a G.” The cheerleaders, the backbone of our team. Oh!. We won! We at G.H.S. are proud of our cheerleaders. Practicing all sum- mer long and after school each day keeps our experts one of the best groups in the state. Certainly, they are an inspiration to our team. It’s a pleasure to the grown-ups, and to the visitors to Gloucester, to see such fine school spirit personified in these 10 girls. Congratulations for a fine job! Victory dance. In the first half the Fishermen looked poor as they found them- selves on the short end of a 20-0 score. Completely dominating the second half, our boys scored twice and were on their way for a third touchdown when the time ran out. Down but not out, Gloucester rebounded to hand Newburyport a 28-8 shellacking. This was one of the best efforts of the cam- paign as our boys played heads up ball. Gloucester put up a good battle against strong Salem. The team was rewarded with a tie and a moral victory against one of the better teams of the North Shore. Zkcy Have Zasted Success Bad breaks and more bad breaks haunted Glou- cester as they had to settle for a 8-8 deadlock with the Tanners from Peabody. The Fishermen played heads up ball handing powerful Saugus a 14-0 defeat. Excellent ball-handl- ing, key blocking, and strong defense provided Gloucester with its best ef- fort of the I960 season. The 1959 class B Cham- pion Melrose invaded Ne- wall Stadium for the eighth game of the season. Our boys were up for the game but the red raiders proved too strong as they scjueezed out a 6-0 victory. Our boys were far out-classed in this one and suffered the worst defeat of the year, 42-0. Good blocking opens hole. Strong defense stops Neves. End run by Sullivan. 129 Jn winning and The scoring punch of our team. The basketball season, a highly success- ful one, can best be summarized by look- ing at their three losses out of sixteen games. The first loss was to a strong Beverly team in overtime. A close fought, low scored game on Gloucester’s court ended 54-51. The next loss came at Pea- body on their stage-court. Due to the small size of the court, all visiting teams are at a distinct disadvantage and Gloucester was no exception. Peabody added Gloucester to a long list of home court victories in- cluding Beverly. Gloucester capped the season by playing Beverly at Beverly for the championship. Here it was a case of just not being mentally conditioned for the game. Although Donald Patrican pumped in 49 points, because of mistakes and poor performance from the rest of the squad, Gloucester was defeated 68-62. Where’s that basket? failure in Cosing In the Tech Tourney, Gloucester played New Bedford. After leading for most of the game they slowed down in the fourth period and were beaten by two points: 60-58. But even in defeat, Gloucester played an outstanding game and every team that has played and beaten Gloucester this year has had to put out 100% to surpass our dub. Donald Patrican ended his basketball career at Gloucester High with 32 points against New Bed- ford. Donny, certainly the best player Gloucester has ever had, has been the back-bone of the Glou- cester team for three years and propelled them on to the Essex County championship last year, and second place this year. His interest in Essex County play consumes all his energy and time during the season. If Gloucester is not playing he is off to scout another team in the league. Billy Rich scored the winning goal and Jon Carroll posted 14 saves. This was the only game during the season which Malden Catholic lost. Saugus brought a 35 game winning streak into their game with Gloucester and promptly lost it in a 2 to 0 win by Gloucester. Gloucester handily beat St. John’s 4 — 2 in the Semi-finals of the N.S.H.L.
