A source of great pride and tradition in Gloucester High School is the Reserve Officers Training Corps. Its primary purpose is to give its cadets and cadet officers a fundamental knowledge of military science and tactics. The R.O.T.C., however, has many other advantages: it instills in the cadets a sense of pride in themselves and in their country, develops the qual- ity of leadership, makes available a wider range of sports, and gives a healthy respect for discipline and authority. Seated: Capt. James W. Curtis, Jr., and M Sgt. Douglas S. Russell. Standing: SFC Frank A. Pettengill and SFC Stephen G. Kinner. Director of Athetics and Head Football Coach at Gloucester High School is Mr. Nor- man C. Nate Ross. Included in the wide variety of sports offered are football, track, basketball, golf, tennis, cross-country, sailing, and wrestling. Miss Nancy Currie is the instructor of the girls ' physical education program, a course which is com- pulsory for freshman and sophomore girls. Sports of- fered to them under this program are basketball, bad- minton, tumbling, bowling, and volleyball. Mr. Joseph Orange is the instructor of the boys ' physical education program. A varied sports program is offered, which includes calisthenics, volleyball, basketball, and others. ■
