Our Principal s Greeting To the Class of 1 959: It has been a pleasure to have had you in high school during these past four years. You have been a most friendly and cooperative class. Your problems have been somewhat like those of previous classes, and somewhat different; you have been a transitional class. That is to say, one of the many sharp turns which have characterized the history of America has been reached almost as you came to the end of your public school course; therefore, you have had to make adjustments which your predecessors did not have to make. Despite these changes you have kept your heads and your balance. You have taken things in stride. Edu- cation could not have selected a finer group with which to implement her new demands. It has been fun to have you here. Now you are ready for the next big step. Good luck to you in every adventure you meet. ARTHUR N. SMITH Principal Mr. Smith ' s secretary, Miss Olive G. Hodgkins, is kept busy with the many things Mr. Smith must do.

Our Guiding Hands To the Class of 1 959: You are your country ' s, your state ' s, your com- munity ' s, and your parents ' investment for the future. The world today is only thirty-six hours large. The essential for survival is the development of a world in which skilled and dedicated citizens who are mor- ally and spiritually strong are willing to devote this new found power to the advancement of mankind rather than to its destruction. Yours is a tremendous responsibility. You are leav- ing high school during the most critical era that the world has known. You, and the hundreds of thou- sands of your counterparts in all of the high schools in our country, are going to determine the eventual outcome of the struggle for good or evil which exists today. It is a tremendous responsibility to place on shoulders as young as yours, but in this instance there is no alternative. As you leave Gloucester High School, your paths will separate in different directions. For some it will mean a continuation of formal education; for others, entry into what will be your life vocation, and for many of the boys, the armed services. Whatever the path we can only hope and trust that you will apply yourselves to the utmost of your capabilities to the end that you will have the realization that your con- tribution is your maximum effort. You take with you the traditions of a great high school. Make those who follow proud of you. Sincerely, L. MUNRO GRANDY Superintendent of Schools MR. J. STANLEY THOMPSON Assistant Superintendent of Schools 8

Vice-Principal and Director Vocational School The Vice-Principal serves as an administrative assistant to the Principal, working in many different areas and on varied projects which may be suggested and initiated by the Principal. Routine duties embody discipline, responsibility for supplies, admin- istraton of mid-year examinatons, and the detailed work of making a master schedule. Here Mr. Winslow S. Parkhurst is dictating to his secretary. Miss Catherine T. McEachern. To the Graduating Class of 1959 Trees have no umbrellas when it rains or storms. Your educational training these past four years has provided you with a shelter against the constant tattooing of the vicissitudes of life. Remember, a well trained homing pi- geon always returns home. A job well done remains with its executor, adding to his stature, a member of his community. Democracy does not owe any individual a living, rather you as individuals, fortu- nate to be living in a free society, owe democracy a full measure of development of your potential so this gift of freedom can be passed on to your descendants un- blemished. Sincerely yours, HAROLD B. GEARY Director, Gloucester Vocational School 10
