THE FLICKER 1952 Published by THE SENIOR CLASS Gloucester High School Gloucester, Massachusetts • TP O Miss Marjorie S. Crawley, Miss Maizie E. Smith, Mrs. Marion F. Wood- ruff, and Mr. Antonio Gentile, who, during their years of service to Gloucester High School, have held a high place of honor in the hearts of their pupils, we, the Class of 1 952, respectfully dedicate our Flicker. Through their conscientious effort and generous co-operation, they have contributed to the success of our high school careers. We hope, then, by this dedication, to express our gratitude for the sincere friendship which they have shown towards us and the invaluable instruction which they have given us. Mr. Antonio Gentile S- v ■ Mrs. Marion F. Woodruff Mr. Arthur N. Smith Principal To the Class of 1952: It is pleasant for us of the faculty to see you reach the graduation time for which you have worked during the past four years. We are glad with you that you have reached the first major goal of your lives. Yet, in a way, we are sorry to see you leave our school to go on your separate ways. You have been a good class. The world into which you now move is a troubled world. All the won- derful and speedy means of communication at our disposal tell us so, con- tinually and emphatically. But the world has always been troubled, and youth has always moved courageously into it to assume obligations not of their making, and to perform duties not of their own choice. It is now your turn. The world is still your oyster; there are pearls waiting in it for you to find. Wherever you go and whatever you do, we wish you luck. We have tried to steer you into the habits and ways which have engendered success throughout history. We hope we have helped you. We hope we have given you the tools with which you can help yourselves. Good luck. Arthur N. Smith, Principal JOHN F. DORIS M. ROBERT W. JOHN C. SAMUEL J. ALFRED J. In this June, 1964 issue of “TV’S TOPS, ' ’ editors Norma Blatchford and Beverly Coose are reviewing recent television programs upon which members of the 1952 Class of Gloucester High School have appeared or have been dis- cussed. “Last fall I shot the largest lion to be brought out of Africa. Who am I? That’s the way “People and Their Professions” got started last week. It looked like a tough one, but Joan Alves, famous literary critic, saved the day for the panel when she exclaimed, “Why that could be no one else but John Alto, noted big game hunter.” Richard Pearsall, Times news analyst, put his hand up at the last minute, but Mistress of Ceremonies, Elaine Avila, saw Miss Alves’s hand first. “I was wrong anyway,” remarked Mr. Pearsall after the program. I thought it was John Davis, Barnum and Bailey ' s number one animal trainer.” Bill Decker, guest panelist and noted sports writer who covered the winter Olympics this year, proved himself a worthy choice when he guessed the occupation of State Fire Chief Harold Cooney. After a brief commercial given by comedi- enne Connie Silva for the makers of O-U Dog Food, the panel set out to discover the occu- pation of William Horne. When the panel failed on this question, members of the audi- ence, Albert Joseph, Richard Hull, Ronald Silva, James Lewis, Stanley Homans, and Donald Thibodeau, in town for the annual Business Men’s Convention, correctly answered that Mr. Horne was a window washer of New York ' s Empire State Building. After Boh Getchell. the nation’s favorite bebop artist, was quickly recognized by panelist Jack Hamor, a noted cartoonist, a shot around the audience by cameramen Thomas Harris and Richard Wagner showed that the house was full of celebrities. Sylvia Corliss, noted lec- turer, was sitting with Carole Pata, newly elected president of United Airlines. Behind them sat the nation’s leading women bankers, Sheila Meade and Suzanne Evans. The camera also gave television viewers a glimpse of Gen- eral James Quinn, Colonel George Silva, and Major James Winn. Getting back to the program, the profession of Paul Lucas, noted scholar, seemed to present another serious problem to the panel, but Ronald Matheson, famous coach of Texas Christian University, came through in regular form, when he revealed that Mr. Lucas was a gentleman who tutored college professors. The occupation of Angela Bertolino was the next problem put before the panel. Shirley Witham, a public nurse and guest panelist, incorrectly guessed that Miss Bertolino was the original “Rosie the Riveter.” Since this was the only suggestion made by the panel during the al- lotted time, John Worrall, Robert Johnsen, John Higgins, and Charles April, members of the audience in town to attend an Elks Con- vention, gave Miss Bertolino’s correct occupa- tion — that of an Hawaiian beach-comber. Class Pr Christopher Cecilio, pigeon breeder and racer, stumped the panelists, but Angela Lovasco, Grace Ventimiglia, and Leola Wallace, mem- bers of the audience, guessed it correctly the first time. The last occupational problem was the posi- tion of Russell Parsons, Jr., a scientist who has made a new pudding from seaweed. Wil- liam Stewart, another well-known cartoonist, and Arthur Wickey, famed sharpshooter, raised their hands at the same time. The emcee, Miss Avila, chose Mr. Stewart, who correctly guessed Mr. Parson’s profession. And so ended last week ' s entertaining showing of “People and Their Professions” over G.H.S. — T . In a move to increase enlistments, last week the army permitted the induction ceremony at Fort Dix to be televised. The following young men were sworn in: John Conley, Stephen Crowell, John Degnan, Robert Elliott, Ralph Gibbs, Ronald Graham, Martin Hanrahan, Robert Morrissey, Kenneth Muniz, Kenneth Perry, and Robert Reed. Congratulations, gentlemen ! Another program televised last week over station G.H.S. — TV was the performance of the Civic Symphony Orchestra. lArst on the pro- gram was Miss Anna May Robator who. ac- companied by the orchestra, played the “War- saw Concerto” on the piano. For the next selection. Richard Brown, also accompanied by the orchestra, played “Stars and Stripes For- ever on the trumpet. The group then played “Tales from the Vienna Woods,” followed by Irene Rocha, who gave a lovely rendition of “Moonlight Sonata.” Another fine instrumen- talist. Gerald Silviera, concluded the program with an inspiring march by John Philip Sousa. The orchestra, conducted by Mr. Richard El- liott, will give a performance next week, fea- turing the music of George Gershwin and star- ring gatest soloist Carol Ann Churchill. When “TV ' S TOPS” reporter, Yvonne Silva, interviewed the winners of the G.H.S. — T Homemakers ' Contest.” Carolyn Bradley, first prize winner in the sewing division showed Mi Silva a handsome Harris tweed suit. Calvie Stanton won the second prize with her red velvet TV pajamas. The third prize was awarded to Maryalice Riley for her set of three fancy western shirts. The first prize in the cooking division of this contest was awarded Nancy Thurston for her delicious pineapple pie. Louis McCallum re- ceived second prize for an orange chiffon cake made from her own recipe. Another Homemakers’ Contest will he held sometime during the next few months under the direction of Ruth Blatchford and Carol Lee Tucker. News at home involving members of the Gloucester High Class of 1952 proved to he as entertaining as the regular programs. At Vineyard Sound, Massachusetts, George Blair caught a world’s record striped bass, and another record was made at the Indianapolis Speedway, when Grace Brooks, the first woman auto racer to win a race at Indianapolis, beat the previously undefeated speedway champs, Sherman Jones and Charles Wood. Massachusetts Senator, Michael Jensen, has proposed that the army adopt Colonel Harold Layton’s new artillery tactics. Last night a passenger plane bound for Los Angeles from La Guardia airfield developed engine trouble and was successfully crash landed near Pike’s Peak in Colorado by pilot Allan Smedburg, and co-pilot Kenneth Cokcly. Doctor Sumner Roper cared for the passengers, none of whom were seriously injured, with the aid of airline hostesses Madalene Burns and Joan Woodbury. Among the passengers from Massachusetts were Boston businessmen David Young, Carl Josephson, and Fred White, and their secretaries, Judith Keating, Maureen Welch, and Estella Murray. Journalist Carol Dagle, printer Charles Bona, sharpshooter John Thompson, druggist Robert Ryan, telephone operator Fay Sawyer, and librarian Emily Pike were other New England passengers aboard the plane. Three policemen; Robert Gib- son. Donald Sears, and Richard Simpson, and two firemen; Walter Souza, and Norman Sears, were required to straighten out the traffic jam. In the confusion, Phyllis Militello, another woman driver, chased Roderick MacDonald and Fred Rhodes, Boston financiers, from the side- walk into the street where they were nearly knocked down by Angela Bammarito, a third woman driver. It is hoped that any future tele- vision programs will not again cause such drastic results among the spectators.
