MAHONEY 1946 - 1949 10 William Mahoney, a former member of the Gloucester High School English Department who died on October 1, 1949, this 1950 Flicker is humbly dedicated. During Mr. Mahoneyls three years at our school We admired his sincere and sympathetic nature, his geniality, his keen sense of humor, and his accurate judgment. Mr. Mahoney's outstanding quality, however, was service to others. Through this dedication We hope to express our sincere gratitude for all that Mr. Mahoney did for us While he was at Gloucester High School. I'OO UC.. EAVING behind us the care free years of our school lives, we are now on the thres- hold of a more challenging and demanding period. From this point in the middle of the cen- tury we look back at the progress and the catas- trophies of the first half, which are now part of history, and forward with hope that our generation will achieve noble goals and avoid pitfalls and disasters. These pages will serve as sparks to ignite the recalling of our memories. For most of us these high school years have been a combination of work and play. Our achievements now loom larger than our defeatsg our irrepressible gaiety and joyous laughter overshadow our sor- rows and tragedies. From this book we hope all will in the future evoke the pleasant mem- ories of our high school days. CO-EDITORS ADVERTISING ART Page Six PHOTOGRAPHY Ffiwter Smff CO-EDITORS Lillian B. O. T. C. holds a prominent place in Gloucester High School. For approximately thirty years the regiment has main- tained its honor rating. Each of the dances has had its unique features. This half century year makes the sixty-fifth anniversary of military training and the thirtieth year of the R. O. T. C. in the school. The staff this year includes Major Robert A. Guenthner P. S. M. and T., Captain Herbert L. Rawlings, Sergeant Joseph Barbosa, Sergeant John Atkins, Sergeant Thomas Murray, and Sergeant Ralph Eye. The drill periods have been filled with various out-of-door ceremonies. These include street parades, platoon and company drill and prepara- tion for formal inspection. The in-door program has included practice in the manual of arms, mili- tary training films, formal retreat ceremonies, and preparation for Field Day. The competition for the Bachelor Trophy which will be presented on Field Day, as taken place in the various drills and in the intramural sports. Sergeant Eye's Rifle Club has been busy practicing for the various matches, and Mr. Gentile's musicians have spent long hours preparing for the spring concert and Page Fifty-six the annual music festivals. The band is under the leadership of Captain Paul Frontiero, Drum Major, and Captain Roger McPherson, Company Commander. The officers and the staff have planned and prepared carefully in order that the parties should be successful. In the spring of 49 the Ser- geant's Party was a beautiful and colorful oc- casion. Under the guidance of Baker Silva a huge center piece of red, white, and blue streamers transformed the gym. At the November party the football and turkey motifs were combined in a parade around the walls. For the entertain- ment of the guests the individual drillers, com- manded by Lieutenant Colonel Donald Emero, displayed their military skill and efficiency. The grand march was intricate and beautiful. There are many who will remember the party when the officers got stuck with the decorations. LePage's product held lovely winter scenes fast to the gym walls, the blue birds were loath to departg the icicles would not melt. At this party in January the Officers under the command of Colonel Taylor presented a spectacular and fast moving platoon drill, and the Girls' Drill 'Team under the com- mand of Lieutenant Doris Johnson gave their annual exhibition. sf o ... :A N P' E IG s: O 04 ... 0 r: 2 o U :Q G2 L-c -o Q3 'T 4-J 54 CD -Q o DG ln O --. The line play of Co-Capt. John Rlizzy Nlisuraca and Charlie Currier was superb, GLOUCESTER 27--LYNN CLASSICAL 14 Sparked by the determination to defeat arch rival Lynn Classical and by the will to block, tackle, and run, G. H. S. swept to its second consecutive win. Destined to become the trade- marks of this team, the downfield blocking' and classy running attack were the big features of the game. Co-Capt. .Xnthony Hogan Gar- risi, l.ttcido, and Sawyer again pro-ved thema selves offensive giants. GLOUCESTER 26 - NEWBURYPORT 0 XYith ,laekie l.ueido's 63 yard touchdown run sparking the offense, the Rossonians were boo-sted by a grand showing in every departa ment to a decided victory over the Newbury- po-rt Clippers. ,lerry Hunt Xicastro and Onorato Hawkl' tialaute added their natnes to the touchdown hall of fame, while Farrell Roberts paid his second visit of the season to Hr, lfnd Zone. GLOUCESTER 41 - SWAMPSCOTT 13 Unleashing a furious assault on the Sculpins' ramparts, ll. ll. S. smashed thro-ugh the Swampscott defense almost at will. All offen- sive honors go to elusive halfbaek jaek l.ucido, who tallied three times with a reeot'd break- ing lll-l yard gallop as climax. Farrell Roberts, Charlie Currier, and john Rlisuraca paved the way for the lfishermen's offense with savage and effective blocking. GLOUCESTER 7 - MARBLEHEAD 6 ln the season's thriller the state's highest scoring teant met and broke Xlarblehead's per- feet record by 21 lone score and conversion. .X first period touchdown aerial strike from Lucido to Garrisi, followed by a perfect iiarrisi con- version spelled early doom for the lleaders. Halighty Mite Xicastro was outstanding in squirming through keyholes in the ponderous Nlarblehead defense while Co-Captain Xlisuraca played his usual brilliant game at guard. FOGTBALL GLOUCESTER 7 - BEVERLY 12 Obviously weakened by its crushing victory over Rlarblehead, Gloucester succumbed to lleverly and its fleet back, Billy Ransom. Bev- erly broke into the scoring column in the first period and again in the third, aided by a long Gloucester penalty. In the last period Glou- cester bounded to life as it found the right combination and scored on a Lucido to Garrisi pass. Misuraca was again a standout in the Gloucester forward wall. GLOUCESTER 37 -- PEABODY 12 In full strength for the first time since the Marblehead duel, the blistering G. H. S. offen- sive suppressed a grudging Tanner eleven. Stimulated by l.ucido's passing and running', Sawyer's three perfect scores, and Charlie Courant's decisive blocks, the Fishermen re- sumed their torrid touchdown pace. GLOUCESTER 32 - AMESBURY 6 Displaying an impressive fiery attack against a reportedly powerful Amesbury eleven, G. H. S., annexed another victory on the road to the Class B crown. Gloucester did most of its scoring in the first half, when it crossed the goal line twice in the first period and two more times in the second period, on a Lucido to Sawyer pass and a Currier interception. Next year's potential greats gained much experience in the second half as Coach Ross substituted freelv. GLOUCESTER 39 - MELROSE 12 Garrisi's S0 yard runback of the opening kickoff touched off a six touchdown splurge that buried the Melrose Raiders. Lueido, Mis- uraea, and Nieastro together with Robert ,led- rey and Hawk Galante followed Garrisi's tracks to pay dirt. Before the close of the first half, Gloucester had sprayed the field with substitutions, including joe Nieastro, 98 pound freshman mite. GLOUCESTER 51 - WAKEFIELD 13 Gloucester High showed no mercy in smash- ing its way to the Class B crown on Thanks- giving Day morning. jerry Nicastro's score on the first play was followed by a Lucido' score three plays later. Gloucester was in high gear as jedrey, Garrisi, Sawyer, and Blisuraca also contributed to the touchdown parade. Perhaps unnoticed beneath the season's offensive bar- rage was the invincible center play of Charlie Courant, who snapped the ball back with amazing aceuracy throughout the season in ad- dition to executing timely and lightning fast blocks.
