The recollections of our high school ex- periences will never leave us during the uncertain years to follow. As we stare into the face of time, with our minds full of hopes and plans for a successful future, we are not, perhaps, too aware of the pleasures we have recently experienced, but there will come a day when we will awaken to the fact and turn to the glo- rious past to this treasured reproduction of the highlights of our high school years. Coached by “Nate” Ross, the team put a lot of spirit into their games and gave the spectators many thrills. Swinson Going Through MELROSE 6— GLOUCESTER 6 In the opening game of the 1947 season, the G.H.S. “Fisherman battled the Melrose “Red Raiders”. Although hampered by injuries, Gloucester held the defending state champions scoreless for three periods. A Melrose inter- ception brought them the first score. With the game rapidly drawing to a close, Morris, Hallet, Keating, Swinson, Lowe, and G. O’Neil raced against time for the tying score. LYNN CLASSICAL 24 — GLOUCESTER 0 Before a capacity arc-light crowd of 17,000 at Manning Bowl, Gloucester High fell before the powerful Classical squad. The farthest penetration of the scoreless “Fishermen” into enemy territory was to the Lynn 33 yard line and the sole Gloucester hig ' hlight was the out- standing performance of “Ken” Keating at tackle. O’Neil to Lowe for Touchdown GLOUCESTER 27 — NEWBURYPORT 6 G.H.S. gained its initial win of the season against the Newburyport “Clippers.” This game was played under the lights at Memorial Stadium Newburyport. Sparked by “Baker” Silva, “Bob” Swinson, and “Danny” Lowe, who made touchdown marches of 66 and 75, 35, and 76 yards respectively. The scoring was two for “Baker” Silva and one each for Lowe and Swinson. Also contributing greatly to Glou- cester’s success was some fine blocking by “Eddie” Hallett, “Irv” Morris, “Gil” O’Neil, and Lee Saunders. Silva also made good three out of four conversions. Jarvis on the Run GLOUCESTER 20 — SWAMPSCOTT 0 Gloucester hit the invading “Sculpins” hard and fast in the ' opening period with a sustained march climaxed by a Palazolla score. Swinson carried the next over from the thirty yard line. A 55 yard pass accounted for the final tally. GLOUCESTER 13 — MARBLEHEAD 7 Before a standing-room crowd, Gloucester defeated Marblehead in a bitterly contested game by the score of 13 to 7. The individual star of this game was Louis Francis who, on the opening kick-off, recovered a free- ball in the Marblehead end-zone for a touchdown, which later proved to be the margin of victory. Other highlights of the game were a 67 yard punt by Gil O’Neil and a 20 yard touchdown gallop by Joe Palazolla. This victory over Marblehead was one of the hardest fought games of the season. Palazolla Scores Page Seventy-four FOOTBALL GLOUCESTER 7 — BEVERLY 0 Thrilling goal line stands featured this tense, exciting game at Hurd Stadium, Beverly. Taking advantage of an early Beverly fumble on their 26 yard line, Gloucester made the only score of the game as a few plays later, Swinson raced fourteen yards for a touchdown. During the third period the Rossonians threatened as Palazolla forwards combined with line plunges, drove Beverly back to their nine yard line, but this was all as the Beverly defense tightened. The final minutes of play were tense and not until the last play was over were the G.H.S. fans sure of a victory. GLOUCESTER 38 — REVERE 6 The Gloucester eleven proved their superi- ority at Newell Stadium, as they ran up their largest score of the season. Working with precision, the Gloucester team scored practi- cally at will. Jerry O’Neil, Gil O’Neil, Bob Swinson, Danny Lowe, Joe Palazolla, and Lee Saunders all scored for G.H.S. GLOUCESTER 26 — AMESBURY 6 G.H.S. rolled up its sixth successive victory at Amesbury. After a Gloucester fumble on the first play of the game and an ensuing touch- down by Amesbury, the “Fishermen” over- whelmed the “Carriag e-Towners” by the score of 26-6. Gloucester’s touchdowns were scored by Lowe, Souza, S. Nicastro, and Sinagra with “Baker” Silva getting two extra points. An- other highlight of this game was the presenta- tion, during the intermission of a 1947 Dodge sedan to Coach Ross in celebration of his 100th game as coach at G.H.S. GLOUCESTER 14 — HAVERHILL 13 Gloucester’s hopes for a Class B Champion- ship were given a big score when oft-beaten Haverhill High came within an ace of defeating “Nate” Ross’s surprised warriors. The “Hillies” dominated the first half and scored after a sustained march, but led by Lowe, “Baker” Silva, and Nicastro, Gloucester fought back to tie the game at seven all. On the ensuing kick-o ff a Haverhill back went all the way. Gloucester managed to- score again and with the tW ' O extra points added by Lowe and Nicastro G.H.S. had another victory. GLOUCESTER 21 — WAKEFIELD 0 Gloucester’s Turkay Day opponent was YVakefield. The first score was a family affair with Gil O’Neil passing to brother Jerry. Gil passed first to Swinson and then to Lowe for the second tally. The final score of the season was a 90 yard gallop by Nicastro. This marked the end of another successful season. The record of four victories against ten de- feats is hardly indicative of the actual ability of the 1947-1948 Gloucester High School basket- ball team. A number of these defeats was by the narrow margin of a basket ct so. In their fourteen league games “Gus” Hagstrom ' s charges had a total score that compared favor- able with the points scored against them. They tallied 469 points while opponents made 538. In individual scoring Captain “Gil” O ' Neil took the laurels He scored 148 points. includ- ing 58 floor goals and 36 fouls. Not included in their league record are two wins over Lake- wood High of Lakewood, New Jersey and Gloucester High of Gloucester City, New Jersey. Their defeats were as follows: to Lynn Eng- lish twice, 37-54 and 36-50; to Salem twice, 30-43 and 29-32; to Haverhill twice, 26-27 and 37-41; to Lawrence, 31-45; to Beverly, 24-25; to Lynn Classical, 37-45; to Peabody, 38-41. From the record it will be seen that the team lost two games by one point, two games by three points, and one game by four points. With a smile from Lady Luck all of these de- feats could have been turned into victories. On this year’s squad there are five senior lettermen, namely: Captain “Gil” O’Neil, Robert Ruth, William MacDonald, Donald Zager, and Robert Silva. These boys, in their years on the squad, have given G. H. S. their very best. No matter what field they move on to, with that type of effort, enthusiasm, and loyalty, they will succeed. Adding dignity to the oc- casion was secretary to the Governor. Jean Burgarella, who has amazed not only the governor and the state, but the country with her revolutionary new curl-removing comb. One of the candidates for school com- mittee was Rosalyn Rubin, present head of the Science Dept, at the high school, who arrived on her purple convertible turtle. Surrounded by the younger generation of the city was Donald “Duck” Stone, a famous cartoonist, who is now employed by the Walt Disney Studios. Two famous actresses, Judy Garland Brown and Jean Tierney Mar- tin. who have travelled a long distance from their winter engagement at the Rockport Summer Theatre, were also at the rally. Sitting together were Dr. Maxwell James D.vett and Gilbert W. O ' Neil, president of Philips Academy, Andover, Mass. Dr. Dyett took part in the rally by relating his psychiatric studies of the effects of politics on neurotic people, and President O ' Neil was honored with a presentation for former All-American football stars, 40 years old or over. M. C. Curhan announced that because Of the terrific flood caused by the rally, free transportation would be provided by the “Red Streak” Taxi Service oper- ated by Harvey Bryning, Esquire. Page Eighty THE ORACLE Casablanca Shines With Gaiety We now take you on a glorious and intoxicating evening to the luxurious nightclub owned by Fred and Herman Brown. The fabulous hall is brilliantly lighted with thousands of candles. Its floor is waxed to glowing perfection and is set into constant motion by whirling silks and satins. The entertainment features Miss Joan Veator. the dancing sensation of the year, in the Dance of the Dying Wood- pecker. The audience watches the graceful gyrations of the dancer. The supporting chorus consists of Mary Savioja, Florence Piscitello, Carolyn Bieknell, Veronica Arvilla. Phyllis Ciulla, and Anita Linquata. The former G. H. S. Orchestra directed by Carlton Doyle provides the snappy music. As we glance into the audience we see the famous world commentator, Ralph Burke. Seated next to him is the president of the Jello Co., Barbara Strople, who is wearing a dress of several colors to advertse her product. At the same table we see Miss Gloria Hubbard, famous soprano, with her pianist, Sorine Ask. It is rumored that Miss Hubbard is engaged to Ray Cahoon, the passionate lover. The spotlight falls on the entertain- ment where the “Lake Raindrops” are about to give us their own rendition of “The Night Is Young.” The former graduates of G. H. S. include Harold Bradley, Joan Emerson, Helen Abbott, Charlotte Perry, and George Day. Fol- lowing this number is the famous dancing group “The Bonga Bonga Hoofers” starring Carroll Jaworski, Bob Snow, Albert West, and David Tribou, murdering the song “The Old Gray Mare Ain’t What She Used To Be.” The Casablanca’s entertainment is never complete without Eddie Rioux, the rich-man’s clown. He mimicks prominent celebraties and gets away with it, and, by the way, he stays healthy. Bob Swinson, coach of the Harvard Football Team, is accompanying his secretary, Miss Mildred Brown. A few members of the coaching staff, Danny Lowe, Irving Morris, William Borge and Joe Pallazola complete this gay party. The beautiful bouquet of celery on the table where Shirley Allen, designer of the costumes of the Ice Capades, and Lois Freitas, star of the show, are seated, was presented by Anthony Galiano, celebrated florist. The second public production of Dra- matis Personae, a dashing, three act, post war comedy, Dear Ruth by Norman Krasna “hits the boards”. Directed by Miss Virginia Brown of the English department. Dear Ruth gives a side splitting chance to Gloucester High School’s future Duces and Barrymores to display their talents. The story revolves around the Wil- kins family which finds itself faced with the problem of what to do with a charm- ing, impulsive Air Force Lieutenant (our own Charles Groves) who arrives on leave early one morning with every intention of marrying the oldest Wilkins girl, Ruth, as soon as possible. It seems they have fallen in love through the exchange of letters. There is only one drawback — Ruth, beautiful but puz- zled (Alison Faulk) has never heard of Lieutenant Sea wright. As might be suspected everything straightens itself out finally but not to the liking of Albert Rummer who in his proper way has intended to marry Ruth himself. Albert, nee Gerald Curhan, steals the show with his hectic descrip- tion of an adventure with the New York subway system. Additional romance is supplied by George Day and Judy Brown in the roles of Sergeant Chuck Vincent and Martha Seawright. Let us not forget Nora, the maid, who is blonde Doris Johnson, changed for the evening into a colored gal from the deep South ; and Harold the sailor with a duffel bag as big as he is (who but William Armstrong?) who manages to get the last laugh as the curtain falls.
