For his sin- cere and helpful friendship . . . We, the Class of 1947, with gratitude and respect, Dedicate our Flicker to SGT. CHARLES W. TUCKER PROLOGUE S INCE our freshman year we have looked forward to the time when we, too, would be seniors. The first floor homerooms, the senior subjects, and most of all the thought of our own Flicker, seemed to us a fond dream of the future. Now that year, like all the others preced- ing, has been completed, and with this Flicker we set down a final record of the highlights of our school career. In the fu- ture we shall always be able to look to this Flicker and h ave recreated for us the joyous panorama of our high school years. WILLIAM TOMKINS Page Forty-nine Room 105 Room 1 20 Room 107 HOME ROOMS Room 102 ACTIVITIES Peeking into the minutes of our numerous clubs, we came upon some tid-bits which we eagerly pass on to you. The German Club, sponsored to introduce the cultural back- ground of German civilization, made whoopee at several parties, which were en- hanced by music, games, German movies, and ludicrous skits. Le Cercle Francais, cry- ing Vive les cartoons purchased a radio- phonograph-recordio set with cartoon pro- ceeds and promptly began to murder them- selves by playing back their accents. But, vive la classe anyway! Leaving the language department, we gazed over the shoulder of the secretary of the Honor Business Club, whose minutes revealed that a second annual faculty tea and a Christmas Party were first on the adjenda. The Art Club spent a worth- while year visiting art studios, and pottery studios, and holding a cake-sale, the pro- ceeds of which were used for prizes for outstanding art work. Approaching the History department, we found that the Round Table held three or four informal debates at which times, tongues, hands, and words flew. The Theo- dore Roosevelt Club, composed of honor students in U. S. History, donated the annual spelling trophy as usual. Ummmm — the Catering Club! This popular organization displayed its talents by supplying delicacies for numerous teas, the proceeds of which went toward an electric mixer. The Sherman B. Ruth Chapter of the National Honor Society spent a worthwhile year organizing a student council, a task which proved difficult and complex but stim- ulating and profitable. Other activities in- cluded the selling of red feathers at football and basketball games. Of course the social functions were successful, also, as was ex- pected. The Stevens Reviewers, whose pri- mary activity this year was a Treasure Chest Review at Sawyer Free Library, also made merry at numerous teas where cup-balancing and nonsensical poems took the foreground. And let us not forget the excellent reviews! The show must go on! And go on it does with the help of our magnificent Stage Crew whose chief activities this year included, in addition to recess movies, and assemblies, Junior Miss, The Lost Elevator, and an endless list of outside activities. Bang, bang! The Auto-Mach Club, originated for the pur- pose of raising money to visit other voca- tional schools, kept on an even keel this year. The Science Club was reorganized this year, presenting, as activities, movies on sciences taught in a high school. Your move! The Chess Club this year sponsored an intra-club chess tournament and every Friday found its members deep in the throes of knights and pawns. BEACON ACCOMPANIED by the immortal Gulliver, and aug- mented by a medley of corn, melodrama, poetry, photos, and essays, the Beacon, our semi-annual literary publication came forth this year under the supervision of Mr. Joseph Shea, with Carolyn Wells and Paige Elwell serving as co-editors. Boasting a new, economy size, the first edition, heralded by a wharf- scene cover, presented some whimsical nonsense and some literary gems worthy of The New Yorker. Gulliver, written by Paige Elwell in both editions, romped over two or three pages, while the literary staff, whose requirements for eligibility are a will and a way to write, gave us some fine material. The Spring issue lived up to Gulliver ' s expectations, and, at the close of school, he waved goodbye to Paige and Carolyn, with his eye already on the new staff. FLASH EDITORS James McComiskey, Mr. George Toney, Marion O ' Connell, Harriet Boyer, Shirley Curtis. UNDER the leadership of editor Shirley Curtis and her three associate editors, Harriet Boyer, Marion O ' Con- nell, and James McComiskey, the Flash turned out a successful series of half-page editions augmented by movie news, bowling scores, and boxing results. De- spite these minor drawbacks the complete staff and the advisors did a job that would be a credit to any school — and G. H. S. is justly proud. Our columns, Paige El well ' s Flashes, Rosaline Ep- stein ' s M ' Lady, Mim ' s Spotlights, Harriet ' s Who ' s Who, Jim ' s Sportlights, and Ray Bentley ' s Affairs in the R. O. T. C., brought forth some high-browed humor (and some puns too) as well as news. The re- porters have been busy this year with articles on the Student Council, N. H. S. trips, the Mother-Daughter Banquet, the Dutch school, Junior Miss, officers ' parties, and the assemblies. Shirt, Mim, and Harriet attended a meeting of high school editors, held by the Boston Globe, at which Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt was the guest speaker. To conclude the year ' s work, the Flash staff did a feature article on summer occupations and turned the Flash over to next year ' s editor, Jimmie McComiskey. Newell Stadium was a scene of standing room only as Loveys, Sheridan and company proved a little too much for the Rossmen. The locals, however, showed that with a couple of games under their belt they would be one of the North Shore powerhouses. The highlight from a Gloucester standpoint was O ' Neil ' s forward pass to Pallazola for a brilliant touchdown run. LYNN CLASSICAL 27 — GLOUCESTER 0 For the second week in a row another eventual undefeated Class A powerhouse was the opposition, this time at Manning Bowl, Lynn. Agganis, Pike, and the rest of the Joyce men packed too much experience at this early stage of the season for the Ross charges. Irving Morris gave one of the greatest exhibitions of line play ever seen in Manning Bowl. Morris was in on prac- tically every tackle made by Gloucester, and Danny Lowe showed prospect of being another great runner. GLOUCESTER 20 — NEWBURYPORT 0 The victory starved Ross men traveled to Newburyport the following week, where, in World War Stadium before a capacity crowd, they crashed into the victory column. Joe Pallazola, Busty Nicastro, Danny Lowe and company all ran wild against a far inferior Joppa town club. The line play of Gloucester was excellent, especially when Newburyport needed a yard or two for a first down. Busty Nicastro, Joe Pallazola and Danny Lowe all scored for the fishermen. GLOUCESTER 1 2 — SWAMPSCOTT 7 Playing their woist football game of the season, Gloucester was fortunate to eke out a 12-7 verdict over the Sculpins before another jammed house at Swampscott. Numerous scoring oppor- tunities were not capitalized on by the Fishermen. Finally, Pallazola scored and this looked like the ball game. Swampscott started passing and John Souza became the hero of the day for Gloucester as he garnered the ball on an interception and went all the way. Swampscott came back, and with Dock Ring carry- ing the ball, scored and made the point good. Souza ' s inter- ception was vital as the final score proves. GLOUCESTER 1 8 — MARBLEHEAD 6 Gloucester traveled to Bertram Field, Salem, for a game with the Magic Makers of Marblehead. Taking command from the opening whistle, the Rossonians looked great. The highly touted Morey men didn ' t have a chance against the revitalized Ross men who were out to make amends for many past thumpings at the hands of Marblehead. With Pat, Jimmie, and Gene leading the way, the Gloucester line opened big gaps for their fleet footed backfield. The Ross bag of tricks was starting to unfurl with great success to the delight of 10,000 cheering fans. Baker Silva scored the first touchdown when the left side of the line opened up a hole that a truck could go through. Lowe scored on a screen pass play that was brilliantly executed, and Jerry O ' Neil tallied on another pass. Touchdown Against Beverly Page Eighty-two Opening Up for Another Touchdown « Superb Interference for Nicastro Screen Pass Taken by Lowe GLOUCESTER 14— BEVERLY 14 Bertram Field was the scene of one of the year ' s best battles on the North Shore. An underdog Gloucester eleven entered the battle picked to lose by at least two touchdowns. This inspired the boys to play the undefeated Beverly team off its feet. With 50 seconds remaining only a break gave Beverly a tie. Gloucester scored first on a beautiful screen pass from Gil O ' Neil to Lowe. Beverly came back in the second half to tie it up, but Pallazola, who played a magnificent game, scored from the three yard line. The two vital extra points were also added by Pallazola who was named Star of the Week in the Boston Traveler for his great performance. SALEM 10 — GLOUCESTER 6 The most heart breaking defeat for Nate Ross and his charges was inflicted at Bertram Field before another full house of 10,000. The Witches of Salem took a 3-0 lead on Ahearn ' s field goal, and held it until three minutes remained when Pallazola uncorked a terrific pass to Jerry O ' Neil. Jerry caught it, and brilliantly faked by Konovalchik, the Salem safety man. This score gave Gloucester fans hope of another victory. Salem, however, went right up the field in the remaining three minutes and scored with fifty seconds remaining. For the second week in a row the outcome was a bitter dose for the hard fighting Gloucester boys. GLOUCESTER 47 — AMESBURY 0 Unfurling a tenacious attack that was due to explode on some unsuspecting team the Carriage Towners were no match for the Ross charges at Newell Stadium before a standing room only crowd. The whole squad saw action in this rout. Russ Parks, Russ Silveria, Busty Nicastro, Butch Jarvis, Carlo Sinagra, and Bob Swinson all scored on the hopeless Amesbury boys. GLOUCESTER 20— HAVERHILL 12 For the first time in many years, the Mound City boys and Gloucester met on the gridiron. Haverhill employed a good passing attack, but this was not enough to combat the fleet- footed Gloucester eleven. Busty Nicastro, Joe Pallazola, and Danny Lowe rari wild all afternoon. Nicastro made one of the best scoring sprints seen all year. The other scorers were Pallazolla and Jarvis. GLOUCESTER 19 — WAKEFIELD 0 Journeying to Wakefield for the second annual Turkey Day affair with Coach Hal Rood ' s team, Nate Ross ' s charges were at full strength to come home victorious. A great local crowd followed the boys to Wakefield and were not disappointed. The team played greatly inspired ball and sent Joe Pallazola, Gil O ' Neil, and Bob Swinson over the goal line. This was a fitting climax to a great season for Jimmie, Pat, Gene, Rus, Herb and Bob. FISHERMAN ' S REEL W eather None Today FRIDAY JUNE 31, 1975 Timely Lecture on Mayor Lays Cornerstone For Stubborn Juveniles by New High School Buildings Prominent Feminist Your reporter has just attended a lecture given by Mrs. John Wrinkle, nee Priscilia Davis, on the subject • ' Why Mothers Go Insane.” Mrs. Wrinkle named several specific instan- ces where a child deliberately saws table-leg and puts cats in the oven. It is time for action. Never, warned the speaker, let a child know he is -boss. Always keep him under your thumb — even if he bites. Among the noted people in the audi- ence were ' Diane Bjertness, famous brain surgeon, Shirley Curtis, eminent editor of the New York Times, Judith Dane, professor of German at Radcliffe, and Harriet Boyer, head of the per- sonnel department of the May Com- pany. These prominent people were all former friends of Priscilla’s and members of her class of 1947. Madame Whiffen Advises Dear Madame Whiffen, I married my childhood sweetheart. Since then he has taken up boxing and insists that I spar with him every night. What can I do to stop this? Miriam Clark Ans. Go home to Mama! ! (She loves you anyway!) Dear Madame Whiffen, My husband insists on wearing his hat in the house. What shall I do? Mary Horne Ans. Have patience. He’s probably just washed his hair and can ' t do a thing with it. Dear Madame Whiffen, For the past two years, I have been going with a fellow who has been very devoted to me. He drank his coffee out of a saucer, but promised to reform for me. Lately he has not kept his promise, and to make it worse, has been getting too chummy with my best girl friend. Shall I break up with him or just ask my girl friend to keep her hands off him? Helen Joseph Ans. Send her a sympathy card with your compliments. If you desire advice address your letters to Madame Barbarette Whiffen in care of this paper. She gives advice, tells your fortune, and takes in wash- ing — ten cents an article. PERSONALS Judy Lane is down with a bad case of prismatoids. It is rumored Diane Bjertness is coming down with the same disease. . . . Paul Kineade is at the hospital doing well after treatment for injuries received when he was caught between halves of the old Blyn- man Bridge. . . . Ray Melanson has just completed the sixth of his under- water tours in search of Atlantis. . . . Sherm Burnham, his wife, and son, Sherman III have just returned from a visit with Mrs. Burnham’s relatives. Mayor Lester J. Alves, shown here with brick and cement, laid the corner- stone to the new high school at a dedication service last night. It will be remembered that the former high school of Blynman Avenue toppled to the ground when the class of ' 47 left. Mayor Alves and his councilmen Robert Carrignan, Joseph Bachman, Robert Bragg, and Paul Grimes stated that as their class caused the downfall, it was their civic duty to construct a new and better school. The new school, says contractor Charles Jones, will actually have a lawn, and architect John McCarthy is planning to install elevators. The dedication program is as follows: SOCIETY Miss Barbara Gray, attractive young debutante, made her debut before a large gathering last night at a gala ball held at the Statler Hotel. Gowned in beautiful Robin’s egg blue, a sprightly original creation by the famed fashion designer Mademoiselle Dorothy Perry, Miss Gray was a startling beauty. The ball got underway at eight with master of ceremonies Alan Christinsin introducing Maestro Jim McLean and his band who provided the musical background. Club vocalist, Jackie Mc- Carthy, Miss Personality Plus, rend- ered a few songs which she has made popular much to the pleasure of her audience. Others who provided enter- tainment were magician, Peter Garrisi, singer John Swinson, and dancer Vir- ginia Wallis. Noted guests who attended were Manager Jack Webber, of the Boston Red Sox, and his wife, the former Doris Anderson, Senator and Mrs. Sherman Burnham, his wife the former Doris Lane, screen beauty, Charlotte Mitchell, Dr. Robert Harty, D. D.S., and the famed columnist, Maureen Conant. AROUND ABOUT Miss Paige Elwell, charming Powers model has just returned from the West Coast where she won first prize in a beauty contest. Major Roger Lane has just returned from a visit to Beacon, New York. It is expected he will resume his duties on Monday. 7-star General Robert Bragg is en- joying a short vacation at his home after having spent the last two years in Alcatraz. Miss Bette Marchante, famed world wide dietician has recently returned from a trip around the world (in a 1931 Chevrolet) where she was inspecting the larger hospitals in each country. It is rumored that James Langley is on his way to Alaska to sell rubber ice picks to the Eskimos. Rumor has it that the Misses Miriam Clark, Mary Horne, and Virginia Ruth are still in California even though they have not been heard from for ten years. Quick action and courage on the part of Jimmy Bammarito and Richard Martin resulted in the rescue of two small boys from Langsford’s Pond. The two boys along with the rest of the pupils from Miss Margaret Catto ' s Bay View Country Day School were on a picnic when two boys wandered away from the crowd. Our old Flicker typists — Louise Brown, Florence Fuller, Ilmi Lahti, Sylvia I’utaansuu, Margaret Parady and Marilyn Miller made a good show- ing at the World’s Champion Typist Event, which was held this spring. Greetings by Mayor Alves Address: Marion O’Connell Address: Arthur Pimintel Closing song: Lois Powers Address: Alderman Stephen Davis After the program, ' Mayor Alves, as- sisted by his wife, the former Rose Padre, laid the cornerstone. Those present were Aldermen Davis, Grimes, Carrignan, Brazier, Bachman, and Marion O’Connell, Highway superin- tendent Julio Bodini, Commissioner of Public Safety, Larry Colby, and their wives. Superintendent of schools Claude Gray stated that the new school should assure comp etent teaching and efficient learning. ART EXHIBITION An art exhibition of paintings by the famed artists Jacquelyn Dupont, Mar- garet Spanks, and Joe Capillo is to be held this week Friday at the private art gallery of Miss Gloria Fudge, at 540 Biltmore Avenue. Miss Dupont will be well remem- bered for her painting “Rhapsody in Fuchsia.” “Eternal Lane,” by Miss Spanks, is a painting which is being exhibited for the first time locally. National fame has come to Miss Spanks because of this picture. Joe Capillo’s humorous interpreta- tions of the recent political campaign should be viewed by all who appreciate such humor. Speaking of Sports The rising fame of Jack Webber has caused much talk among sport lovers who claim he is another Teddy Wil- liams. Webber started his career in high school and has steadily risen to fame. Gene MacDonald and Pat Arena’s Manchester Marvels have just won the Atlantic championship and have gone on a three month’s tour to the West Coast. These two able coaches have an exceptional team because they are practicing the same superior technique their coaches in high school, Nate Ross and Aarne Frigard, taught them. Dartmouth has in the making one of the finest teams in basketball history. Their peerless coach, Sam Scola, has them working hard so they may have the same spectacular success his Glou- cester team of 1947 had. Eagerly Countess Dantieo, nee Jacquelyn Viator, twists the dials of her television set in an attempt to learn more of the events of the world. Her marriage to the Count, George Danikas, has not worked out so well in financial matters as she finds it difficult to keep a small home and a large family on meager lucre. This liability interfers with her social standing so she has to follow the adventures of her friends with her television set. Listening, she hears the mellow, high pitched tone of the planet’s famous Forrest White. Gcod Evening Mr. and Mrs. United World. Tonight we bring you news and scenes of the world ' s great people. “First, we shall see Miss Rosamund Witham, dancing sensation of the dec- ade, in the ’Dance of the Sick Sea- gull.’ ” Jackie watches the dancer and look- ing sharply she is able to pick out Frances Wilkins, Dorothy Ingersoll, Katherine McIntyre, and Clarice Curry, Miss Witham ' s supporting chorus. The scene ends and the golden voice of the Master of Ceremonies, William Tompkins pours forth. “We shall now take you to the Dia- mond Mounde castle on the Boardwalk where the social extravaganza of the decade is taking place. Jacquelyn is thrilled to see Rosaline Epstein as hostess of the Mansion. She is greet- ing her guests of honor, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cooney. Mr. Cooney has just finished writing a book on The Essence of Having No Homework in 500 pages. The butler whom Jacquelyn recognizes as Norman Kiff introduces the next guest and, as Jacquelyn looks around, she discovers the maid, Barbara Cooney, and remarks, It’s funny what people turn out to be.” Next, she hears Bill Tompkins say, “Ladies, we shall now travel to Pier 13 where the King Jigg’s (Queen Maggie left last week) is just about to make her maiden voyage. Miss Marjory Ross, society editor of the Yata ta will introduce you to the passengers. Good-day friends. The first person we encounter is Mrs. Margaret Barner Brown, renowned international traveler who is leaving for Paris to congratu- late her latest husband, Eldridge Brown, who recently became crochet champion of the world.” “As we descend into the luxurious first-class staterooms we see Miss Virginia Ruth, famous opera soprano, discussing her next concert with her pianist Miss Nancy Davis who is en- gaged to Melvin Olsen, the mad artist. In the corner we see Jean Hubbard Heberle and Clement Heberle bidding each other a sad adieu. The thought of being parted from his fifteen children has depressed Clement. As usual we see the last stragglers, Joan Child, Marion Keating, and Jose- phine Nicolosi, all people of interplane- tary renown hurrying up the gang plank just as it is being taken up. Your reporter bids them bon voyage and smooth sailing. It’s intermission time, folks,” purrs the voice, “and we have a chance to look around and see who has arrived. The frolicking Mrs. Leon Rouvalis, the former Dorothy Wightman, has just dashed in, as usual, from the races on Long Island. Rose Parady is languish- ing on the arm of a well known Wall Street broker. Charles Coose, editor of Esquire is energetically pursuing his hobby, photography. “Peeking into the sky blue orange rcom of the salon, we note Doris Anderson, promising debbie trucking with Gene Howard, precocious pin ty- coon, to the melodic, undulating strains of Donald Reed’s orchestra. Off in a corner we hear raised voices and look to find Bob Carlson and Russell Parks arguing as to who is going to take Janice Fiahlo to see ' Life with Aunt Matilda,’ ” The lights are dimmed, the spot comes on, and Natalie Palk comes trip- ping on the stage singing Irvin (Berlin) Burnham’s The Odor of the Pisces. As you can see, this piece is in its own class. And now the orchestra, under the baton of the master Warren Verge, swings into Viva la Natalie and trails off into Auld Lang Syne.” But before she can hear the end of the program Jacquelyn hears the fretful squawk of her youngest, snaps off the television set, attends her children’s needs and settles down to enjoy the endless thrills and surprises found in the modern home.
