O. T. C. and the Slst year of Military Drill at Gloucester High School has been one of the most successful and outstanding in the history of this popular and traditional activity. Not only have we acquired a basic military training under the instruction of Captain Francis P. McNerney and Tech- nical Sergeant Charles W. Tucker, but have gone forward along new paths of social developments. The regiment has been effici- ently commanded by Cadet Colonel David E. Black with Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Thomas A. McComiskey as Executive Officer. During our drill periods we have varied our out-of-door pro- grams with street parades, platoon and company formations, and practices for formal ceremonies: while in doors. on cold or rainy days, we proceeded to coordinate our arms, legs, and brains, with rifle calisthenics, practice in the manual of arms, inspection, and by the review ceremony. and military training films. Besides this rather intensive program the cadets have shown exceptional enthusiasm in entering the various competitions held throughout the year: individual drill, company basketball. prize squad drill. Therefore we have high hopes for a superior regimental per- formance on Field Day,-the annual public conclusion of drill with competitions and ceremonies. Recently added to the regiment's distinguished appearance was an original shoulder patch designed by Captain Marchant in competition with and selected by the entire unit. The red, white, and blue shielded schooner will remain the permanent emblem of Gloucester's R. O. T. C. We take great pride in the fact that we have been able to present four of the most pleasurable and profitable officers' parties to be held in G. H. S. For each we have created a new and extensive set of colorful decorations and have rehearsed a completely different spectacular officers' grand march. Another item of interest was the incorporation of the color spot-lighted waltzes and R. O. T, C. orchestra stands. The platoon sergeants started the ball rolling with new ideas at the shaker day Sergeants' Party when steps were taken to elaborate the grand march and supply a huge canopy of inter- woven streamers. At the Thanksgiving Officers' Party the new disc and diamond bearers dipped into the fund for more decorations, a venture which proved itself both financially and socially a top quality affair. Regimental adjutant, Captain Marden, commanded the individual drillers: Cadet Officers attended from Bangor, Maine. Lowell, and Newport. Rhode Island High School units. The third and perhaps the most memorable of our parties was the Valentine Party when all of the officers with white belts, leggings, and rifles, under the command of Colonel Black executed the snappiest of all demonstration platoon drills ending with the singing of Waltzing Matilda while marching into successive spectacular formations. The Girls' Victory Corps drill team per- formed very well in their annual exhibition commanded by Lieutenant Barbara Goodwin. Dancing under two rows ot per- sonalized paper hearts were also Cadet Officers and partners from the Lowell and Methuen units. It is expected that the Presentation Party will be a similarly enjoyable dance with its prize squad drill, grand march, visiting officers, band concert, and gay decorations. Thus far the officers and their ladies have attended two delight- ful out-of-town military balls, February at Lowell and March at Methuen. In December two couples journeyed to the annual Military Ball at Newport. The R. O. T. C. Band, instructed and directed by Mr. Gentile and commanded by Captain Marchant has this year, as always, proved its brass in both marching a-nd playing ability. After a much anticipated concert in March the band will undoubtedly proceed to place high in the New England Music Festival, which will be held in our own city. They certainly are deserving of praise for their lengthy rehearsals.-providing the downbeat for the unit and for sports events. 0-Blank L R O T C OFFICERS Frist Row left to rrght Captam Francrs A Vxdal Captam Donald C Monroe lr Captarn Rrchard H Marden Mayor Edmund F Re Colonel Davld E Black Lreutenant Colonel Thomas A McCom1skey Major Iohn I Coyle Ir Captaln Orville F Ireland Ir Captam Harolo A Gcodrlch Captam Rlchard W Head Second How left to nght Frrst Lneuter-ant Robert L Iohnson Frrst Lleutenant Nrcholas C Psahdas Flrst Lreutenant Benme A Chlan crola Captarn Gardner H Marchant Ir Captam Francrs P McNerney Srgnal Corps U S A P MS GT Technxcal Sergeant Charles W Tucker U S A Instructor Captam Samuel W Burgess Frrst Lreutenant Gerard X Rroux Ir Fxrst Lxeutenant Iohn P Burgarella Frrst Lleutenant Nrcholas Vrachos Thzrd Row Ieit to rxght Second Lreutenont Iohn A Blatchford Second Lreutenant Rrchard L Santos Second Lreutenant Thomas W Dolan Ir Second Lneutenant Sherman H Wrlson Fxrst Lxeutenant Edgar Noseworthy Second Lreutenant Iohn K McBr1de Second Lreutenant Robert O Fraga Second Lreutenant Robert E Meuse Our group of snarpshooters workmg wrth Sergeant Tucker and Team Captam Burgess ace marksman has seen a great deal of actton thls year m competrtron wlth other schools Several semor boys were tl'e nucleus of the rttle team whtch won thrrd place m the Wrllram Randolph Hearst match partrcrpated rn the Servrce Command match sponsored by the U S Army and traveled to Taber Academy for another match The team expects to be host to other R O T C umts before the year passes and looks tor ward to the shoot plcmc wxth the female dead eyes Lookmq back over the years we tmd among others two excep tronal competrtors from our class Frrst the umque trrst place sxngrng pnze squad commanded by Davrd Black which pre sented a most entertarnmg spectacular drrll at our lumor Pre sentatron Party Second the frrst place wrnner of both the Indx vrdual and Haskell rxfle drrlls Gerard Rroux who thus left no doubt as to hrs superrorrty rn the manual of arms We hope that you wall read the lrst ot medal and award wmners posted on page 69 and wrll frll rn the Freld Day Presenta tlons Page Srxty !1ve A -4. l I Nc, X , x f' ' e H-.,,, R -' 1 . g , ,lx H y 1 V, 1 X I I It 5? , T 7 I 1: . .
