CORLISS Born January 5, 1922 Died September 26, 1938 “Immortality o’ersweeps all pains, all tears, all time, all fears, and peals, li e the eternal thunder ,of the deep, into my ears this truth: Thou livest forever!” -- ' BYRON THE SENIOR FLICKER 9 PROLOGUE TW« Honors, awards, hopes, disappointments and dis couragement have initermingled to make up the picture of our four years in high school. This Flicker aims to record for us the prouder and gayer moments. Although the future may change our attitudes and standard of values, our individual triumphs, recorded herein, will always bring a happy glow of memory. In the future we may look back and smile sentimentally over the snapshots, autographs, and jokes that will recall many incidents, friends, and memorable events. Our aim is the creation of a year book that will have significance not only now but in the years to come. Even though this book may grow old along with us, let us hope that the turning of its pages will always recall those pleasures which we have shared at G. H. Strikd up the band for the grand march. Our dashing Colonel wins hands down for Most Popular Officer. Our vice president’s popularity again rates him second. The conscientious work of Mary Silveira and Polly Ahola win them honorable mention among the Most Dependable Girls. R. Davis and F. Mulhaupt tie for second in dependability. Mr. Greely gets one vote. It must be his secretary. The class of ’39 should be able to establish a record with so many Ver satile Girls. Mary S. and Edith S. tie for second place. Miss Lovering’s changeable moods capture one vote. Because of his varied abilities, Sherm is voted second Most Versatile Boy. What a fashion parade we could stage! The chic appearance of Shirley Crowell and Mary Louise win them honors as second and third Best Groomed Girls. Macinnis’ corduroy jacket wins him second place as Best Groomed Boy. Eddie Sallah’s camel hair sweater, which is the admiration of all the girls, brings him in a few votes. From the bevy of beaming beauties Jane Dunn with her cute smile captures second place; Shirley Crowell’s charming manner brings her in third. It must be the snappy uniforms that make the officers the Best Looking Boys. Lieut. Egan is second; Lieut. Mulhaupt, third. And here are three more of the girls “neat and sweet, with what it takes to be Cutest” — S. Crowell, M. Keating, and E. Lopez,. Richie Kain’s golden locks and cute freckles place him as our second Cutest Boy. Sammie G.’s hair cut and “Baby Food” smile bring him in third. Flash! ! Bert McNair and Lennie Egan get second Most Bashful Girl and Boy. Wouldn’t they make a cute couple? The class must believe that work leads to success for once again our con ' gratulations go to Edie and Mary — two girls we never see idle. Mulhaupt’s artistic prose promises a bright path to Future Success. Have you ever heard Macinnis go peep a ' peep-peep on his clarinet? Well, the class has; so he’s second Most Musical. The jitterTugs vote for Benny Goodman. Gray’s book reviews are really good. He is our second) Most Literary Senior. In spite of - — or perhaps because of - — ■ the neckties we see around school, more girls than boys receive votes for Most Artistic. L. Sanderson’s honor rolls in room 27 are outstanding. D. Quimby displays her abilities in costume designing. 66 THE SENIOR FLICKER Nobody can deny that R. Davis is ' businessdike — especially Thursday afternoons when he dashes to collect all the final “scoops”. Carolyn Parsons also gets her share of votes. As president of the Girls’ Club, Edie certainly has done her bit for the class. Harriet Karcher’s spelling trophies have won her second place. The voters agree that Mooter Albert has Done Most for the Class. According to the ballot S. Ruth, R. Davis and J. Larsen have also done their share. Where there is a vote that depends on efficiency we find M. Silveira and E. Swinson; here they tie for Most Ambitious. What an abundance of sunshine and cheer! We had pages full of Cheerful Seniors but the final count shows that Sarah Holmes and Russell O’Maley follow Perry for a close second and third. If it isn’t books that Mulhaupt carries in that brief case, he has us all fooled; for he receives a landslide of votes for Most Studious Senior. Ahola and Keating are second and third in a cloud of sixty-seven Social butterflies. With vivid memories of English IV, Miss Lovering agrees with the class decision which gives Winnie Guest and Peggy MacDonald a tie vote for Most Talkative. Another tie! S. Crowell and I. Anderson win the doubtful honor of being second Most Eickle. Mr. Greely is voted the faculty representative. As football captain of a winning team. Moot comes in second as the Senior Outstanding in Leadership. E. Alexander’s school girl complexion helps to place him as a second God’s Gift to the Women. Some of us must love oup teachers as votes go to Mr. Wilder, Mr. Ross, Mr. Greely, Mr. Hooper and Mr. Era2;ier. And what have Phil Curcuru and Bob Wagner been doing to deserve those votes as Senior Cradle Snatchers? How did Mary Silveira win first place for Class Bluffer? She has some ' body fooled. That dignified look of Mulhaupt’s attracts the eye of the class. Result — he is second choice for Class Chesterfield. The dash from one sport to another places Janice Primmer as most Atlu letic Girl. Kay Savage is following the family tradition. The athletes are running in a bunch. O’Maley, second; and the Cur ' curus, Pino, and Ruth in tie for third. Miss Smith is voted second Most Popular Teacher What! No mascu ' line candidates? Can it be the timely jokes that place history second? Recess, study, and romance have tlieir lesser, though loyal supporters. Is that Ralph Tarr emerging from in back of his bottle of milkj every recess to take the vote for Class Baby? And can’t you see the expressions of some of Sammie’s football opponents when they learn that it was the “third placer” for Class Baby who hit them! That wins him our one vote for most versatile. SNAPSHOTS THE SEHIOR FLICKER 69 70 THE SEHIOR FLICKER History Of Class Of 1939 Four years have elapsed since, one September day, we entered G. H. S. as freshmen. We have been no extraordinary class, we make no claim to genius, but we have carved a place for ourselves in the annals of G. H. S. This is our record. FRESHMAN The upperclassmen finally condescended to notice that we were a class when our freshma.n football candidates, Anthony Albert, Walter Murphy, Albert Silveria, William Greenberg, Walter MacFarland, Ralph Pino, Lloyd Rose, Robert Porper, and Joseph Curcuru, made such a good showing. Our position in the school was even more firmly established when our first social event, the Freshman Party, was such a success with Janet Mac ' Laughlin as chairman, and Jean McPhee, Mary Cronin, and Shirley Crowell on the com mittee. We were also the first sponsors of a Freshman Glee Club whose officers were Dorothy Flygare, president; Jean McPhee, vice president; Janet Mac ' Laughlin, treasurer; and Jean Fitzpatrick, secretary. Harriet Karcher added to our honors by winning the class spelling championship. Our basketball heroes failed to equal the outstanding record of the foot- ball boys, but Coach Ross had great hopes for Edward Middleton, Franklin Nelson, John Larsen, Anthony Albert, Richard Perry, Ralph Pino, Joseph Curcuru, and Joseph Favazza. The journalistically minded freshmen who covered school activities for the Flash were Joanne Hartford, Mary Cronin, Janet MacLaughlin, Ernest Leavitt, Katherine Savage, Melvin Kramer, and Richard Davis. The 54th year of military drill in the Gloucester High School and the 20th year as a unit of the Reserve Officers’ T raining Corps commenced with an enrollment of 387 members. The unit is organized as a regiment and is commanded by Colonel Edv ard R. Fallon, Jr. Among the notable events which have taken place during the current school year were, first, the 48th annual dance and prize drill. Sergeants James P. George, J. Weston Black, 3rd; and Pvalph C. Levie won first, second and third places, respectively, in the individual drill. Then came the 47th annual party and exhibition drill which was espec ' ially colorful this year, due to the fine work of the committee on decorations. The largest exhibition drill platoon ever formed for any of these parties, was ably com ' mande.d by Captain Sherman B. Ruth. After a long season of training and practice, the rifle team, capably coached by Sergeant Charles W. Tucker, won the First Corps Area Intercollegiate Match which entitled the team to represent the First Corps Area in the National Intercollegiate Matches. First and third places in the Corps Area, were also won in the William Randolph Hearst Trophy Match. The score of the first team in this match, 936, was higher than any other high school or college team in the Corps Area. The team is captained by Second Lieutenant Robert L. Wagner. The R. O. T. C. Band, having 56 members, has given two fine concerts which were well attended by its loyal supporters. It is taken for granted that the band will make its usual fine record at the Massachusetts and New England Music Festivals again this year. It is hoped that the unit will receive this year, “honor” rating for the 19th con ' secutive year, a record which is outstanding among the 139 junior units in the United States and its territorial possessions.
