have the responsibilities and privileges of adulthood that were denied us before the new laws. We can vote. We can own property. We are eligible for auto loans. We can buy insurance. We can obtain medical treatment without approval of our parents. We can marry without parental consent. We can drink alcoholic beverages le- gally. We can sue in court and serve on juries. Such changes offer a whole new life style for us. We intend to use our rights, and most definitely not abuse them — for we are not just children who have gotten our way, but adults who have finally achieved what we truly deserve. We shall be the first graduating class to have these privileges. It is for these reasons that we, the staff of the 1973 Blue and Gold, have chosen “New Rights” for our theme. Read with us throughout our book the opinions of Gloucester High students and teachers concerning the new eighteen-year-old rights. 3

For all practical purposes, eighteen year olds are adults I think that most take their voting privilege se- riously and will exercise the right much more than their parents have in the past Today’s youth are more concerned with the problems of the nation and the world and do not show the apathetic attitudes of the older generation
