GLOUCESTER CITY HIGH SCHOOL student life. . . Blue and Gold 1967 Gloucester City High School Gloucester City, New Jersey 4 ■ I •fcDlCAT Q ... in the search of peace and concord throughout the world... in the sense of both observing and absorbing everything around us, thus seeking a means by which to end war, violence, and hostility... in the attempt to overcome our own personal weaknesses... in the hopes of establishing a mutual understanding among all nations. The Class of 1967 is proud to dedicate its yearbook to World Peace. With it, serenity and harmony will be conceived. Without it, we are prisoners of a force over which we have no control. We are victims of the hatred and ugliness which destory all the beauty of our earth. We are confident, however, that our struggle for justice, humanity, and peace will be achieved goals in the near future through the dedicated efforts of our peace organizations. •+ SEA TED Mr Gilbert I) Ross; I)r Thomas YV Sykes, Superintendent of Schools; Mr John Lynch, President; Mr YVilliam E Hughes. Jr BOARD OF EDUCATION On the morning of October 1, 1966, Gloucester City High School’s football field was dedi- cated in the honor of Mr. John A. Lynch. Mr. Lynch has served as President of the Board of Education for twelve years, and previous to that time he served as Vice President of the Board of Education for ten years. We, the students of Gloucester City High School, were proud to have dedicated our field to such a deserving person. As you leave your high school days and get ready to accept the responsi- bilities of living in a world full of turmoil, may you help build a better world community while developing the following: P - Purpose and perseverance E - Education and excellence A - Ambition and achievement C - Character and competence E - Enthusiasm and eagerness Dr. Thomas W. Sykes Superintendent of Schools Memories of high school days. . . while these memo- ries are still vivid at the time I am writing this mes- sage, they will become dimmer with the passage of years. I hope that in the years to come your Blue and Gold yearbook will help you to recapture some of the golden moments of your high school days. I also hope that your high school has been successful in helping to prepare you for the world in which you live. This is an ever increasing challenge to high schools to-day in our fast changing world. As alumni, I hope that you will always maintain an interest in your school and that you will help us as we attempt to fulfill our obligations to the coming generations. Ralph J. Bracken Principal To the class of 1967 I say congratulations for a job well done and good luck to you in the years to come. Your class has really been a major factor in our great success in athletics during the past three years and academically you have maintained the standards required of you in your various courses. I hope that many of you will continue your studies beyond graduation and that you will support your college alma mater as you have supported good old G.H.S. James P. McNally Vice-Principal You have earned and now possess a Glouces- ter High School diploma. The common bonds of many memories of the classroom, the athletic field,, and the assembly hall are cherished and everlasting. They are the re- sult of the mutual interest and experiences of the student and teacher that begin upon entrance, are developed during the high school career, and continue for many years after leaving school. As a member of this graduating class, each of you have reason to be proud of the many accomplishments of your class. Graduation is the most significant milestone in your life to date. The zeal, tenacity, and perseverance displayed in successfully pursuing your edu- cation will be invaluable attributes as you prepare for the future. Sincere wishes for your success in the many challenges that will confront you. Joseph A. This year the major project of the Student Council has been the adoption of Alexander Acunia through the Christian Children’s Fund. Alexander, who is of Navajo and Pima descent, was born on Septem- ber 26, 1960, and now lives on a reservation with his family. It has been a struggle for Alexander’s mother to make ends meet as his father is unskilled and has not been able to find regular employment. These good people realize that in order to continue with Alexander’s schooling they would need help with expenses, food, and clothing. The Student Council, which is under the direction of Mrs. Carol Schuler, has been very happy to assist with these expenses. This has been greatly appreciated by him and his family; we hope that the Student Council will continue its fine, generous work in the years ahead. The members of the choir practiced many hours a week, under the direction of Mr. Jules Seder, in order to participate in the ex- change program with various high schools, includ- ing: Kingsway Regional, Pennsgrove, and Salem. When our choir visited those schools the perform- ance usually involved show music from “Funny Girl” and “West Side Story”, standard, and novel- ty tunes. The Choir also performed with the Dance Band and Concert Band at the Spring Concert on April 20 as well as at the 1967 Baccalaureate Pro- gram. NURSE’S AIDES AUTOMOBILE CLUB ART CLUB STUDENT COUNCIL SCIENCE CLUB BOWLING CLUB Part-time Cooperative Industrial Education is a relatively new program now developed in many schools throughout the state of New Jersey. Its pur- pose is to place students in the industry which best suits their interests and where they can learn those skills necessary for their future work. Gloucester High’s program is under the direction of Alan J. Lyons, who interviews and tests students for their aptitude and interests. Our program, which is in its first year, benefits everyone concerned: the students, who could not possibly learn these skills in school; the employers, who can train and instruct future employees at reduced costs; and the school, which provides more opportunities for its students by having added this new dimension to its curriculum. PART-TIME COOPERATIVE INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM The Cooperative Work Experience Program at Gloucester High has been operating with great suc- cess for twenty years. The credit for this can only be given to Mrs. Mae S. Godshall, coordinator of the program. Her duties include establishing relations with business and industry and placing her students in the positions which best suit their interests. The program has been greatly accepted by the leaders in these fields, as it helps to satisfy the increasing de- mands and urgent needs of business. We have great confidence in the program and believe that it will enjoy many more years of success. Our special thanks to Mr. Sal Centola for his patience and fantastic photography; to Mr. Irving Glick and his office staff for their kind assistance; to Mr. Ron Weinmann, our enthusiastic and energetic publisher’s representative; to the competent staff of the Ameri- can Yearbook Company at Bala Cynwyd; to Don Souder ’68 for four great candid pho- tos; and to the administration, faculty, and student body of Gloucester City Jr.-Sr. High School for their cooperation, especially on picture-taking days. As our yearbook grew into a reality from our dreams, imagination, and hard work, so loo may we all see the theme of our yearbook - world peace - become a reality in the very near future.
