We, the Senior Class of 1959, wish to dedicate this yearbook to the faculty and administration of Gloucester City High School for imparting to us their knowledge and trying to prepare us to conquer our Space Horizons. We are very grateful to them for their particular interest shown to us in their constant devotion on their own time. We also dedicate it to our parents who kept us from faltering along the way. For it was through their love, kindness and under- standing that we were led safely toward our first horizon. We hope as we prepare to take our place in this modern world, that we may always look toward each new horizon and prove that their guidance and love was not given in vain. . Y ; V-y • icy ¥ 5 • v $ 2 In today's modern world we are surrounded with talk con- cerning space, space travel, rockets and man-made satellites. They have become an important part of our daily lives. We live in con- stant awareness that in the not too distant future all of these scientific inventions will attain their ultimate goals. With each new discovery, man has come closer and closer to conquering the unknown. However, if man should conquer outer space, he will be faced with a great many problems along with a wealth of knowledge. It is our hope that he will use this knowl- edge as a peaceful means of solving the problems in forming a better world for tomorrow. Tomorrow, when we open this book, we hope it will bring to mind the old and conquered horizons and enlighten our way toward the new. SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE Education for the space age has received serious consideration by people in all avenues of life. Many contradictory suggestions have been made to improve the secondary school progress. There is only one sure foundation for the future. Develop all the talents of all the people and this nation will never lack any skill or technique to compete in the space age. David F. Brightbill Superintendent of Schools PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Your class is graduating as the world is truly on the threshold of the space age. I am sure that the education and training that you have received at Gloucester City High School will help you to become responsible citizens and to contribute to the wel- fare and safety of our nation. As graduates you will have to make many important decisions among which will be the type and quality of education that will be offered in the community where you live. It is my hope that you will always remember your school and that you will work for its continued improvement. Ralph J. Bracken Principal 4 BOARD OF EDUCATION MRS. MILDRED MARTINEZ MR. NASH On November 10, 1958, Gloucester City High School lost a respected friend and a beloved member of our faculty, John L. Nash. For twenty-one years he not only taught and molded stu- dents into better citizens, but he gave unselfishly of his time and efforts in directing plays, coaching wrestling and numerous civic endeavors. Mr. Nash has left a void that will be hard to fill. He will be greatly missed by our students, our faculty and by our city. 10 President ROBERT KRYZK «i- w 3 Vice President BART RETTEW CLASS OFFICERS Secretary SHIRLEY RETTIG Treasurer CHARLES PATTERSON DONALD ALLISON JR. 423 Cumberland Street D. WILLIAM YOUNG—Prom Committee 3. 35 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THE CLASS OF 1959 We, the Class of 1959, being about to pass out of this sphere of learning into the great unknown, in full possession of a crammed mind, worldly knowledge, and super human understanding, do make and declare this to be our last will and testament. First—To the faculty we bequeath our loving disposition. Second—To the Junior Class we leave our places in the auditorium. Third—To the Sophomore Class we leave three years of hard work. Fourth—The following may seem trifling bequests, but we hope they may be accepted, not as worthless gifts lavishly thrown away because they are of no use to us, but as valuable assets to those who may receive them, and a continual remembrance to the generosity of heart displayed in our free and full bestowal. The rocket ship, the '59 Future, p.iloted by class president Bob Kryzk, soared into space as it left the planet Earth from in front of Gloucester City High School. The chief hostess was Judy Smith; and her assistant hostesses were Sally Radford, Pat Bond, and Ellen Reader. The first stop was on the planet Mercury. We were greeted by Bart Rettew, a prominent politician and president of the Rat-2, Rat-2, and Rat-2 Consolidated Engineering Corporation. In honor of Robert Weichmann, the star athlete who was signed to the Milky-Way All-Star Team, there was a delicious dinner catered by the Richard Koester Company. The waitresses were Lynetta Boos, Shirley Snellbaker, Laura Hesington, Jean Harris, Sandra Cindowski, Eleanor Meyer, Blanche Borger and Marilyn Livengood. Harry Keeny, the master of ceremonies, introduced the entertain- ment. First on the agenda was the comedy team of Rosen and Penny. Bertha Finnerty enchanted everyone with her current hit song, Sail Along Silvery Moon. Shirley Rettig, a galaxy renowned dancer, performed to the music of Dean DeBell, Ed Hickman, Herb Parsons, Carol Jones, and Gertrude Kruger. Shirley's chorus con- sisted of Diane Bloxsom, Janet Britton, Eleanor Duffy, Carol Neild, Carolyn Seufert, Pat Johnson, Geraldine Kaighn and Joyce Hickson. After our visit to Mercury the rocketship, the '59 Future, soared through space and landed on Venus where we were welcomed by an enormus cheering crowd led by the famous cheerleaders Margie Cwik, Jo Thomas, and Ginny Raymond. The sightseeing tour through- out Venus was planned by Carol Lipkin. Her guides were Robert Britton, Richard Brown, James Gradwell, John Savage, Herb Sharp, William Kimmey, John Mellon, Dominic Mucci, and William Packer. First stop on the tour was at the new, ultra-modern dancing school owned and operated by Barb Janetti. Her assistants were Marion Flood, Joyce Persichetti, Barbara Welch, Faith Weigand and Theresa Dewney. Male Teachers were Jim Ashe, Don Murphy, Jim Miller and Larry Clark. Heads were turned when we visited the Allison House of Fashions, where many beautiful creations were designed by Don Allison. His leading fashion designing assistants were Judi Hayes, Joyce Maurer and Tom Bearint. The feminine creations were modeled by Edythe Clark, and the male wardrobe for Esquiver Magazine was shown by Robert Schmidt. Further down Venus Square we came to the premier showing of Once Around the World, a movie directed by Robert Mc- Caughey and produced by Joseph Lonergan. Immy Award winner Bill Kaisla arrived in a solid gold jaguar, chauffeured by Bill Young. Upon completing the enjoyable tour, we blasted off for our next destination which was Jupiter. The rocket ship, the 59 Future, landed just in time to witness the colossal discovery by Dr. David Munn. He had just found the cure for a common cold. Nurse Joan Renard led us to see Dr. Charles Patterson, a well- known dentist, who was busily engrossed with his latest project, his dandy, wandy, bombastic plastic false teeth. Our next visit was to the Jupiter Women's College where Gail Mester, Dean of Women, had completed her new book on English grammar, titled Ain't Ain't in the Dictionary. Professors in the college were Marie Ludwick, Anne Warwick and Barbara Fritsche, who was head of the athletic department. Across the campus was Jupiter Men's College. The Dean of Men was the famous scientist, Phillips Thurston. Professor Rich Gaughan headed the math department, and Stanley Booth was head of the athletic department. Diane Batezel was the head nurse of the in- firmary assisted by Lynn Berry. The big industrial planet Pluto was last on the tour. The first stop was to the Jack Wiederwax Wax Corporation. The elevator operator, John Matt Mullin, took us to the 59th floor. Here we were introduced to the First Vice President, Jim Kritikson, and Second Vice President, Bill Shawlot. Their efficient secretaries were Pat Lamont, Dottie Wiesner and Jerry Wimmer. Helen Moskow was their receptionist. Because of rocket trouble, which was being repaired by Tom Taylor, Ted Savidge, John Mellon and Robert Mills, we stayed at the luxurious resort hotel. Las Satellite, owned by George Hindle and William Brennan. There we were welcomed by the smiling hostesses, Georgeanne Ellis and Kass Taylor. The bellhop, Earl Kaighan, took the suitcases to our rooms, and after we rested Gladys Stubbs, recreation director, introduced us to her assistants, Eleanor Meyer, Irene Matlack, Kath- leen Pitzo, Carol Popazivanov, Martha Neuhouser, Art Collins and Duke Markowski. Before the dinner-dance the girls aboard the 59 Future had their hair styled by Carol Remington and Alberta Elenbark. Manicures were given by Carol Mahan, Ellen Fritz, Cass Webster, Bea McOsker, Catherine Hassey and Anna Walters The rocket ship the 59 Future was repaired and ready to take off from Pluto. A very nice send-off was given us by Mary Hulbert, Fred Hoffman, Ron Browning, John Cassidy, and Ray Dick. The memories of the trip would always be vivid in our minds, but we were glad to return to planet Earth. In front of Gloucester City High School the 59 Future landed. Here we were greeted by mayor Joseph Connelly and his council members, Mildred Murray, Rich Huff, Tom Downey, Joe Devone, Frank Buchannan, Tom Wilson, Ray McKenna and Richard Dick. Now we realized we must continue in the future and proceed with full sails toward our goal while the wind is full. 38 SENIORS 39 World of Smiles World of Music World or Drama I « World of Comeliness World of Romance World of Fashion World of Silence World of Chatter World of World of Congeniality _ World of SILV’RY BARBARA JANNETTI FRANK DIGIACOAAO JUDY SMITH ROBERT KRYZK BARBARA FRITSCHE JAMES HETHERINGTON JANET BRITTON JAMES ASHE PATRICIA RUSK JOSEPH LONERGAN CARLY NEILD WILLIAM BRENNAN JACQUELINE TAVENER CHARLFS PATTERSON JOSEPHINE THOMAS GEORGE HINDLE BLANCHE BORGER RALPH LOVOULLO BARBARA WELCH VINCENT RENARI FAITH WEIGAND CHARLES TOURTUAL MAUREEN O'BRIEN THOMAS BEARINT JUDY RUSK JOHN MULLIN MARION FLOOD ROBERT FERRY JOYCE PERSICHETTI LOU TOMASSETTI 46 MOON CAROL THOMAS JOHN WIEDERWAX SUSAN COYLE JAMES KRITIKSON BARBARA FREDERICKS DONALD MURPHY SHIRLEY RETTIG HOWARD DICKSON GAIL MESTER DAVID MUNN PATRICIA BOND EMIL CRAMP MARGIE CWIK LOUIS HARVEY JANET PARKER LAWRENCE CLARK LOIS MERRITT BART PETTEW ARNETTf TAYLOR ROBERT SCHMIDT PEGGY SMITH ROBERT BRITTON DIANE BLOXSOM DAVID COPELAND SHIRLEY SNELLBAKER JOHN SYMINGTON BERTHA FINNERTY VIRGINIA RAYMOND JACK LYNN WILLIAM STUBBS 47 JOAN RENARD WILLIAM DOUGHERTY CAROLYN SEUFERT STEWART RECORD ELEANOR DUFFY JAMES SPENCE GERALDINE WIMMER STEVEN HAWTHORNE PATRICIA JOHNSON JOHN HEIMLICH KATHRYN TAYLOR ROBERT FOSTER GLADYS STUBBS JACK BOWE KATHLEEN PITZO CAROLE POPAZIVANOV THOMAS WILSON MELVIN WALTON ELLEN READER PATRICIA KNICELY WILLIAM YOUNG RICHARD GAUGHAN LYNETTA BOOS FRED IULUICCI BERNICE HIGGINS HARRY KEENY KATHRYN JOHNSON WILLIAM SHAWLOT MAUREEN POWERS FRED HOFFMAN ELEANOR MYER DANIEL HUGHES 48 LAURA HESINGTON WILLIAM LITTLE or BELLA WHITE EARL KAIGHN JOYCE MILLSTEAD THOMAS TAYLOR JUDY TUBBS THEODORE SAVIDGE THERESA DOWNEY JACK STALEY DOLORES ARENA DONALD ALLISON DORIS CRAIG HERBERT SHARP IRENE MATLACK JOSEPH PHILLIPS PEGGY ROYSON JUDY MASSARO JOHN CASSIDY RONALD BROWNING CAROL JONES NEIL MILLER MARTHA NEUHOUSER ROBERT HOLLOWAY CAROL MAHAN JACK MILLER VIRGINIA LUDWICK CHARLES THOMPSON GERTRUDE KRUEGER WILLIAM TAYLOR 49 ACTIVITIES HONOR SOCIETY President JOYCE MAURER Vice President BART RETTEW Secretary SHIRLEY RETT1G Treasurer RICHARD HUFF QUILL AND SCROLL 51 YEARBOOK EDITORS Joyce Maurer, Jack Wiederwax, Barbara Fritsche, Bart Rettew, Gail Mester, David Munn, Charles Patterson.
