THE SENIOR CLASS of Gloucester City High School Gloucester City New Jersey DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of 1957, in recognition of their untiring efforts in our behalf, dedicate this yearbook to our parents and our teachers who, through love and understanding, have engineered our bridge to life. To our parents, we express gratitude for the sound planning and industry responsibile for the solid foundation and for the continuing help given all along the way to its completion. We thank our teachers for their expertly executed job in finally com- pleting the structure. Now, as we prepare to cross over and take our places in the future, we pause to express our appreciation of the efforts of these bridge builders—our parents and our teachers. FOREWORD In choosing a theme for this year's Blue and Gold, the similarity of our education to a bridge was brought to mind. Just as a bridge enables us to negotiate a natural barrier, education dispels the barrier of ignorance and helps us to attain the knowledge and the ideals we need to achieve success and happiness in later life. The new Walt Whitman Bridge, sched- uled for completion so near the publication of our book, presented us with a wonder- ful opportunity to illustrate our theme. The new bridge is featured with authentic pic- tures and drawings which will be nice to have in the years to come. We hope we have used this opportunity to the best advantage. THE BRIDGE BUILDER By Will Allen Dromgole An old man, going a lone highway. Came at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm, vast and deep and wide. Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim, That sullen stream had no fears for him; But he turned when he reached the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. Old Man, said a fellow pilgrim near, You are wasting strength in building here. Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again must pass this way. You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide. Why build you the bridge at eventide ? The builder lifted his old gray head, Good friend, in the path I have come, he said, There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been naught to me. To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim. Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.' SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Congratulations on the successful comple- tion of your high school program! The ad- ministration and faculty of Gloucester City High School have tried to instill in you the ideals, habits, and character which will re- sult in a useful and successful life. This should not be the end of your stu- dent life, even though you do not go on to college. It is my sincere hope that you will continue to be students throughout your en- tire lifetime. Apply the inquiring mind to your daily tasks and to your environment and thus ensure not only a successful career, but a very interesting and enjoyable life. David F. Brightbill AAR. DAVID F. The directors of the building of this foundation were president Wayne Parker, Vice President Carole Thompson, Sec- retary Barbara Kasa, and Treasurer Robert Ignatovig. We worked hard all through the year in order to get a good start on our bridge to life. To celebrate the finishing of our foundation, we held our freshman dance, 'Three Coins in a Fountain. In our sophomore year further construction was taken over by President Wayne Wright, Vice President John Gianvito, Secretary Julie Campbell, and Treasurer Harriet Plews. We gave the working crew a day off with entertainment in the form of an assembly, entitled The Silver-Backed Hair Brush. Upon the completion of our tasks we were again given a chance to enjoy ourselves at our sophomore dance, Red Sails in the Sunset. On to the stringing of the cables in our junior year! This was done under the super- vision of President Wayne Wright, Vice President Sidney Walton, Secretary Carol Hurff, and Treasurer Eleanor St. John. With the coming of autumn and our junior dance, Autumn Leaves, we were off to a good start. As the stringing of the cables progressed, so did the acting ability of our juniors as shown in their performances in our junior play, Almost Summer. To commemorate the finishing of the cable stringing, we had our most festive celebration of all—our Junior Prom, Oriental Spring. Now for the finishing touches. Our last year of construction begins with the election of our final supervisors: President Wayne Wright, Vice President John Gianvito, Secretary Carol Hurff, and Treasurer Harriet Plews. To raise funds for the completion of our final tasks, we present our senior play, You Can't Take It With You. We then continue to pave our way with our first senior dance, Winter Wonderland. We begin painting the bridge with our second senior dance called Memories. Almost done our task, we take time off for a three day trip to Washington, and upon returning, go back to busily getting ready for the big moment. It's finally arrived! Our bridge, after much hard work and many fond memories, is completed. As the senior class crosses the bridge on Graduation Night, we realize that there are many bridges to be built in our future, but our memories of high school, our first bridge to life, will be the dearest of all. LASS PROPHECY Having won $64,000 on a TV program, Clyde Zilch, a typical member of the class of '57, has de- cided to make a trip around the world. On his travels he encounters many of his former classmates. Starting in Gloucester City, he has his new Lincoln checked at MARSTELLER'S Garage by me- chanics GARY RUSK and MILLARD DAVIS. Telling his neighbor, plumber HENRY HORNE, to keep an eye on things, he begins his journey. Crossing the Walt Whitman Bridge into Philadelphia, Clyde visits his friends, CHARLES BECKETT, BILL JONES, and JERRY BRADSHAW, employees of WCAU-TV; ROB- ERT BENNETT, manager of the Boyd Theater; and PAUL BURKHARDT and WAYNE WRIGHT, chemists at Atlantic Refining Co. Proceeding westward to Bethlehem, Pa., he drops in to see JACK BAKELY, an official of the Bethlehem Steel Co., and his secretary, MIRIAM BOOS. At Akron, Ohio, his car is serviced at the PARKER and McCULLY Lincoln-Mercury Agency. Arriving in De- troit, he finds his friend DONALD BROWN design- ing new Pontiacs. At the Ford Motor Co. HARRY MATLACK and JOHN HAGAN along with their sec- retaries SID WALTON and MYRNA ASHENFELTER are receiving the prize for having the country's No. one Ford Agency. Finding that the giant bridge across Lake Michigan being built by the engineering firm of SCARFE, EVANS, SPOLTORE, and COPELAND, is not com- pleted, Clyde crosses via BEN POWELL'S ferry boat. In Chicago, he finds TV comedian GREG ROBINSON starring in a night club. To the south in Springfield, III., he finds DOT EVANS running a record shop. Boarding a pictur- esque river boat at St. Louis, he cruises down the Mississippi, passing beneath many majestic bridges. In New Orleans, Clyde finds that the Mardi Gras is in progress. On Basin Street JIMMIE McCOLLIGAN and ED DUBOIS are playing in a Dixieland band. After the Mardi Gras Clyde boards a luxury liner for a cruise on tropical waters. Aboard the ship he meets famous dancers CATHERINE MILNER and ELEANOR SIMPSON and thespians CAROL SEUM and FRED HAWTHORNE. In the lounge he finds World Chess Champion, DEAN HILLMAN, engaged in a game. As the liner passes the Navy's U. S. S. Forrestal, Clyde spots its officers: JOHN CLIFFORD, DON JENKINS and BERNARD BENNETT. Stopping in Havana, he learns that BETTE LOU COFFMAN is a nurse at that city's new hospital. As the ship nears South America, Clyde remembers that RICHARD SWEETEN has discovered a fabulous emerald mine in Columbia. At Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, he finds CHARLIE THOMSON, the owner of a field of oil wells. After his ship docks in Rio de Janiero, he visits a gift shop operated by THELMA BLOSSER where he meets PAT CWIK. Boarding a plane for Europe, Clyde is surprised to find that its pilot is JACK EBERLE and his stewardess is LYNNE YERKES. Land- ing in Brussels, Belgium, he visits U. S. Ambassador ROBERT LAMBERT. Clyde's next stop is Paris where he escorts a mademoiselle to the annual showing of fashion designers ELEANOR ST. JOHN and BER- THA BRANGAN. Crossing the channel to London, he visits businessman ED HUFF who, with his sec- retary JEAN MOEN and LOIS MILLER, who is teaching in a private school, takes him to see the famous London Bridge, and later to the Palladium where dancer ROBERT QUENZEL is appearing. Taking a plane to the Orient, Clyde lands in Shanghai, where he finds servicewomen JEAN LEGGE and IDA HAGEN on leave. Returning to the states, he picks up his car in San Francisco where he finds that GORDON KANADY is a prominent draftsman, and that SHIRLEY LEAP and PAT KNEDEI- SON are living in the same city. In Oakland Clyde visits aircraft executive DALE YOUMANS and his secretary, ELLA SABO. Journeying southward, Clyde is invited by hair- dressers CAROL SMITH and BARBARA KASA to tour the MGM studios. There he meets comediennes BARBARA HATTON and SANDRA VAN FOSSEN, writer BARBARA TRIBBETT, and dancer CAROLE THOMPSON. Passing through Pasadena, Clyde re- calls hearing commentators JIM ANZIDE and DUTE STINSMAN at the last Rose Bowl Game. At Yucca Flats, New Mexico, he finds JACK HOWARD, KEN KESER, CHARLES SCHMELIA, JIM TIGHE, and ANDY MURRAY working on a secret project at the U. S. proving grounds. As Clyde drives eastward through the Texas cattle country, his car develops engine trouble. He flags down a passing 1971 Cadillac and finds that its occupants are prominent Dallas psychiatrists HARRIET PLEWS and JULIE CAMPBELL. They inform him that he is on WAYNE PATTERSON'S vast cattle ranch and drive him to the ranchhouse where the ranchhands fix his car and start him on his way. Arriving in Dallas, Clyde stops at RAY SMITH'S super market where he meets housewives PAT TIEDEKEN, IDA URBACH, and SHIRLEY CONNELLY. Moving on to Texarkana, he finds that JONI WATERS, FLOSS WOOMER and RICKY GONZALES are living there. To the South in Tallahassee, Florida, Clyde finds that a prominent doctor in that city is CHARLES WILKINS who employs technician JUDY WATSON, nurse IDA McVEIGH and secretary BETTY CLARKE. In Miami, he goes to see DAWN WALTER in the Ice Follies, and finds Packard dealer ROBERT IGNATO- VIG, housewife PAT MURPHY, and restauranteur RITA NIELSON in the audience. Driving homeward, Clyde stops in Washington, D. C., where the government employs secretaries MARY FRYE, FLORENCE HALL, LOIS HANNOLD, and JANET HENDRY. Training for the Olympics which are to be held in Washington, are ED MATTHEWS and CAROL HURFF. CAROLYN BROWN is looking on. A prominent Washington clothing store owner is JACK HAMILTON. Before crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge, Clyde fuels up his car at a Saveway Station managed by BILL HANNA. On the bridge, high above the DuPont Company's Chambers Works where WILLARD CONNELLY is employed, Clyde tunes in the RAINELDA LANE Show on his car radio. ® Before returning to work, Clyde makes several other excursions. At Connie Mack Stadium he watches Phillies ROBERT LONABAUGH, TONY DOGOSTINO, and MATT ROLLER slaughter the Dodgers. In the audience are Warriors BRUCE CAMPBELL and JOHN GIANVITO, and Eagles JIM ASHE, JOHN COBB, and LOUIS TOMASSETTI. Cruising on one of WILLIAM CLOUSER'S yachts off Atlantic City, Clyde meets Miss America, SUNNY BROWN, and mosquito exterminator BOB FREIDEL. As we leave Clyde, we hear him and motorcycle dealer BOB STRAUBE planning a trip to the hunting lodge of LARRY GRABOWSKI and LOUIS GRANDI- ZIO, while enjoying themselves at HARRY WRIG- LEY'S Billiards Parlor. The rest of his trip home is uneventful as far as members of the Class of '57 go. Mrs. Wm. P. Arena Ann’s Beauty Shop Mr. Lloyd W. NJ Gathering Up the Threads How good it is to meet old friends And gather up the threads once more To reminisce of days gone by And travel through youth’s open door. To stir some cherished memories Long hidden deep within the heart, Which never seem to come to life When traveling down the years apart. There’s nothing more that is as sweet Or helps to make the spirit soar As meeting with some good old friends To gather up the threads once more. by Hilda Butler Farr We hope that the theme that was chosen for our 50th high school reunion reflected where we are in our relationship with each other. We hope, too, the location we all selected for our special weekend, and the activities that were planned, made this reunion a memorable one for you. As we planned our 50th reunion, we couldn’t help thinking about how special our class really is. We’ve enjoyed having a class reunion every five years since we graduated in 1957. Over the past few years, we started to see each other more often at the Saturday luncheons at the Brooklawn diner. Do you know what is truly amazing about our lunch gatherings? Classmates actually plan trips to the area so that they can attend! And, many classmates who were with us for just a few years, but didn’t graduate with our class, feel a special closeness and stop by the luncheons and join in our reunions! While many high school classes can’t seem to get enough of their classmates to attend reunions, we can’t keep our classmates away from getting together. It’s remarkable the bond of friendship that we formed while we attended GHS. Maybe it’s because we all came from the same background and a simpler time. We didn’t have much, but we know how to reach out to one another in time of need and we know how to party. No matter where we travel, we always meet someone from Gloucester and remember the “good old days”. Aren’t we the lucky ones!!! So, as we “Gathered Up the Threads” at our SO 1 reunion, we hope that you celebrated our uniqueness and that you always treasure our special friendships.
