DAILY JOURNAL PRESIDENT ACCLAIMS ENGINEERING FEAT President, Robert Luker, today ac- cloimed the invention of two struggling young engineers as a boon to civiliza- tion. Engineers George Thompson and Charles Wamsley designed and invented a revolutionary new type bridge. De- tails have not yet been made public, but this invention is sure to change the whole industry of bridge building. SEVEN COUPLES CELEBRATE WEDDING ANNIVERSARY WITH COMBINED CELEBRATION Today, seven couples celebrated their wedding anniversary with a combined dinner. Among those present was the famous interior decorator, Edith Thomp- son. Guest speaker of the day was the well known army nurse, Barbara Ols- son. Among the others present were Pauline Tamer, Marlene Hildebrandt, Eva Virtue, and Eva Mae Rudolph who lust gave up an important position with the North American Aviation Corpora- tion. Of the men present, the most noted was Mr. William Totten, who is an expert German interpreter with the United Nations. RANCHERS DISCOVER OIL ON THEIR RANCH Towanada, Texas. 4:31 A M. Today— Pete Houseknecht and Howard Ziegler discovered oil on their property this morning. The gusher spouted so high, it is reported that it could be seen from the Joan Foster ranch in Arizona, and the farm of Violetta McKinney, deep in the heart of Nebraska. It is rumored that the two young men will be invited into the Millionaires Club, by its president, Howard Boulden. LATE FLASHES! Glen Adams opens a soda fountain on Koehler Street. Robert Bobo is trying out for the Warriors. William Davids will travel to France with the U. S. Olympic Gymnastic Team. William Foltz was awarded a cita- tion of merit for saving a drowning lady. Donald Grant was given a position on the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Football team. Fred Henning is to start jumping for the Boston Celtics. Jomes McGuigan is opening an auto body fender shop. Hal Merritt is going to teach dancing ot the Arthur Murray Dance School. Jarvis Midget will go to Florida for a coaching position. John Sooy speaks tonight at the on- nual Elks dinner. William Stone makes his boxing de- but at Madison Squore Garden. David Stump takes a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. Jack Thompson begins 5 years as basketball coach at C.C.N.Y. Herbert Wills fills in as a Proctice Typing Teacher at G.H.S. Carl Weich opens a new garage on Crescent Boulevard. Stanley Watermasysk will teach Driver Training ot G.H.S. Joan Agar makes Hollywood debut. Verna Alex was promoted to Major in the WACS. Marion Amies becomes an executive of Apex Cosmetics Co. Margaret Bakely starts her tenth year as Receptionist at the Y.W.C.A. Marion Brandt joined the Arthur Mur- ray School as teacher, along with Bar- bara Briedenback. Metropolitan Opera Company features Marian Burns. Mary Chambers is made President of Horn and Hardart Stores. Betty Cobb edits a small western newspaper. Barbara Douglas writes etiquette col- umn for local newspaper. Bowling team coached by Jonet Evans wins their 16th straight game. Barbara Fitzpatrick makes her tele- vision debut tomorrow night. Charlotte Franck has been made Tele- phone Supervisor. Janet Gibison is opening a new beauty salon. Efficiency expert, Groce Hanley, will inspect local factory. Joon Heotherington opens a watch and clock repair shop. Barbara Jones and Joan Kernan are secretaries with local steel company. Iowa Koykka becomes president of Lincoln Motors. SPORTS AROUND THE TOWN SOCIETY The Philadelphia Athletics today won their fourth straight game against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Williom Stout, a young rookie in his first year, obtained his fourth win in a row. He gave up only one hit in all four games. The game was highlighted by a ninth inning home run by the first baseman. Jack Collins. In football, the winning streak of 52 games was held intact today when the Podunk University Eleven, coached by Bob Eppleman, defeated Notre Dame by the score of 72 to 2. The Philadelphia Eagles just signed four new players to fill in on the offense. They are George Wilson, Robert Mc- Connell, Fred Lockenmeyer, and Rudolph Weichman, former basketball star at Ohio University. Miriam Rowand today renewed her contract with the Jersey Jolters Roller Derby team. NEWS OF THE WEEK Joan Mikle teaches Dental Technique at G.H.S. Patricia Muldoon becomes City Li- brarian. Joan Neuhauser is selling growing pills at Kings. Dorothy Pryswora opens a clothing store on Broadway. Joan Schaefer is high scorer in hockey for the season. Betty Sheldon is to teach English at local high school. Nancy Sheppard will open a travel bureau. Alberta Smith is appointed Ambassa- dor to South America. Nationally known hair stylist, Audrey Snyder, will visit this city. Child Welfare Agency is supervised by Audrey Spoltore. Grace Stoake opens a cheer leading school. Beatrice Trimback is now personnel manager of Scott Daines. June Van Fossen stars in Broadway hit. Have you heard the latest? Mary Gappo came into a fortune and is now driving around town in a swanky con- vertible. Daniella Lonnabaugh just bought a custom built Buick convertible. She is taking driving lessons at the Mary Chambers Driving School. Joe Dailey just opened up a new and used car business. His first customers were Joe Hubbs, Sergeont Joe Leeds and wrestler Killer Wilke. Famous home town comedian Ed Walens is back in town to do a show for the Stadium Fund. Come out and have a good time. ANNUAL MEETING HELD The seventh onnual meeting of the Businessmen's Association wos held here last night. Sterling Brensinger, chairman of the association, introduced the guest speaker, Charles Hope, who spoke on the subject most closely related to him, television technician wanted. Other note- ables present were William Hughes, well known chain store operator, and Samuel G. Sayre Jr., owner of the Sayre Trans- portation Company. Karoline Waldron signs contract to pose for toothpaste ad. Adele Walton opens a new and revolu- tionary chewing gum factory. Wilma Woomer is made Vice-President of Quigleys. Margaret Yerka and Margaret Young open a Florist Shoppe in town. Kathryn Tedesco marries a millionaire. Mae Strack was voted First Lady of the U. S. Kass Mason publishes new hit song that is sweeping the country. While touring the world, Robert Wright stopped off at the French Chateau of Baron Harry F. Kroh. Mr. Wright will continue his cruise around the world, and upon returning, will give lectures at several famous universities. A formal tea will be held at the home of Miss Carole Johnson. Among the notables present will be Norma Klienfeld, and Irene Ashman whose husband is President of Cadillac Motor Car Cor- poration. Another world traveler and world ex- pert has just returned from a visit to the King and Queen of England. Miss Joan Hoefle will arrive Tuesday on board the Americana, after a five year world cruise. MUSIC Today in New York City, the world's famous draftsman, Donald Greenwood, gove up his million dollar a year position to play the drums for Gene Krupa's Band. Richard Cheeseman today signed a $ 100 a week contract with the famous David Rose. He will play third clarinet, while his friend Harold T. Stauffer Jr. resigned as bass fiddle player in order to run a dairy form. The critics at the Music Hall were all high in their praise over the versatile Raymond Knispel, who gave a recital on the piano. He also can play a trumpet of the same caliber as Harry James.
