CLASS HISTORY In browsing through my library shelves, I came upon a dust covered volume entitled, Memories of the Class of ’51.” I took the volume down and started thumbing through it. The first chapter my eyes fell upon was under the heading Freshman Year. This portion of the book told of a group of young fellows and girls who had just entered Senior High School. They met many others just like themselves who had come from another school. The two factions grew friendlier by the day; until finally when they presented their freshman dance, The Farewell Dance, they had grown into a strong and indivisible class. The dance was given in honor of the graduating class of 1948. The frosh year was outstanding be- cause it was the first time they elected of- ficers to govern the entire class; and so they elected a very competent man for President in the person of Bob Eppleman. Just then a draft of wind turned the page to another page which was entitled The Sophomore Year. The summer vacation was over and nearly everyone was back in school. The members were a little older and a little more mature. Everyone was happy because they had taken another step in the direction of that seemingly wonder- ful year, the Senior Year. That was the year of the Rosebud Hop. The class that year re-elected Bob Eppleman to the office of President. Everyone seemed to take more of an interest in school activities, but it was still a long road to graduation and many of the constituents dropped by the wayside. When the Junior Year came there was much commotion as this was the year of their first class play. The play was en- ’51 FIRSTS 1. Record set by R. Weichman of 44 points in a single game. 2. First class, in any school, to present Our Miss Brooks. 3. Blue and Gold Newspaper printed eight times a year. 4. First time a rotogravure section was added to newspaper. 5. New high score in football against Glou. Catholic, 56-7. 6. 97 points in basketball scored for first time in new gym. 7. Best basketball record of any team at G.H.S. 8. First time our football team defeated Haddon Heights. titled John Loves Mary, and starred Bill Stout and June Van Fossen with a wonder- ful cast. Under the superb direction of Mrs. Martinez, the play set a new record for at- tendance. After the play a party was held for the cast at the home of George Thomp- son. After the excitement of the play died down the class held another dance with a Mystery Melody as its theme. For the third straight year they elected Bob Epple- man as President. Then came the day for promotion into the fabulous Senior Class. To some, being a Senior may not have felt as was expected. There was much to be done before the wonderful graduation day to which everyone looked forward. It was no pushover in work as many expected it to be! The play that year was Our Miss Brooks, directed by Mr. Heimerl and starred Ed. Walens, Grace Staake, Bill Stout and June Van Fossen. The cast party was held at the home of Bill Stout. The Seniors put on an assembly program that year with the theme being Television Highlights. It showed imitations of such famous T. V. per- sonalities as the Andrews Sisters, Paul Win- chell Jerry Mahony, Milton Berle, Ken Murray Oswald, Kukla, Fran Ollie, and others. That year the class presented two dances; the main one being the Snow Ball. In May the Seniors took their annual trip to Washington where they spent three thrill-packed days enjoying the sights. The rest of the year went by very rapidly, until before they knew it, it was graduation week. Class night was another memorable night that will live in the hearts of all members of the class. Then Graduation— As I read this volume, all the members of the class are scattered far and wide. I wonder as I read if any of them are reading it too, and if the memories of good old Gloucester High are still with them.
