John Sullivan. Kara Turing is the President this year with Ed Kain as Vice-President and Jim Dunn as Secretary. The hard- working representatives this year are: Seniors: J. Blymer, M. Maguire, C. Murphy, D. Pascal, Juniors: B. Clay, C. Dailey, P. Naughton, G. Schaller, Sophomores: R. Colletti, B. Jordon, D. Orzechowski, S. Presly. The Student Council has sponsored such activities as the Halloween Dance whose theme was “A Monster Bash”, merry munchies during the Christmas season, and their annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. The Student Council also plays an active part in the pep rallies. Besides doing things in school, the student council also helps the needy in our community by sponsoring the Thanksgiving Day Drive. This year the student council worked hard together and has made school a fun place to be. Student Council VP: Ed Kain, PRES: Kara Turing, SECT: Jim Dunn. Martelli’s birthday cards. Each student is called down to the office on his or her birthday to receive a card, small gift, and personal birth- day greetings from their principal. Sometimes Father Martelli falls be- hind but he never forgets. He even remembers the teachers and staff on their special days. Everyone can look forward to at least one trip to the principal’s office each year. JO 30 SC LEADS FOOD DRIVE Gloucester students continued their tradition of putting the “giv- ing” back into Thanksgiving. In a food drive organized by Father Sullivan and the student council, each homeroom collected canned goods and money so that Thanksgiving baskets could be delivered to needy families in the area. Although each homeroom contributed, Mrs. Vizzini and 9A were tops in donations. On the final day of the drive faculty members brought in loaves of bread and SC members added turkeys, wine, and fresh fruits and vegetables to all the canned goods that had already been collected. The results were 21 cheerfully decorat- ed cartons of food from the Gloucester Catholic family to other families all around us. In addition SC was able to give Christmas gifts to the needy at St. Mary’s home and make a donation from Gloucester Catho- lic to the Bishop’s Conference for the poor of the world. If you ask most students at Gloucester Catholic what the National Honor Society is they’ll more than likely say it’s an organization made up of all those who have achieved honors. True, you have to be an honor student to be eligible for NHS, but you must be much more. You must also be a doer, someone involved. The National Honor Society is made up of individuals who are doers. During the 1983-84 school year the NHS has sponsored fund raisers and volun- teered to work for such organizations as the American Cancer Society and Deb- orah Heart and Lung Association. They have worked with the children from St. John of God, attended honors seminars at area colleges, and assisted some of our own students through a tutorial program oper- ated by the society. Toys were collected and distributed to children who otherwise may not have recieved any, and some of our Senior Citizens were left smiling after a NHS visit over the holiday season. While some of this work is done during a school day, just as much of it is accom- plished after school or on days off. At the same time, most of the members of the Society are actively involved in other areas of the school-Student Council, news- paper, yearbook, sport teams or Knowl- edge Bowl, just to mention a few. Yes, it is a priviledge to belong to the National Honor Society, but it’s also a lot of doing. That’s what is not in a name. Above: NHS officers A. DeMeo, M. LePore, D. Boyer, L. Angelotti Below: NHS members host a Halloween party at St. John of God School National Honor Society Installation Mrs. DeBarger and Aries Editors Patty Carr, Michelle McCarty Karen Hamill, Denise Boyer, Jen Ambrose Job 862 Each year at Gloucester Catholic has its own special flavor and it is the Aries’ staffs job to capture that unique- ness and record it in a permanent document. A document that, as the years go by and we occasional- ly take it down from a shelf at home or a box in the attic, will become more and more precious. Under the direction of a new advi- sor, Doris DeBarger, and editor Patty Carr, this year’s staff spent many long Thursday afternoons selecting photos, laying out pages, thinking up headlines and cap- tions, and typing copy. Twenty- five staff members spent a day last fall at a yearbook conference at Glassboro State College preparing for the huge job ahead of them. As the year progressed the word deadline took on a new and terri- fying meaning. And words like bleed, crop, and pica became fa- miliar parts of their vocabulary. They tried to have a loaded cam- era ready for every event but didn’t always succeed. They tried to spell everyone’s name just right but probably weren’t a hundred percent on that either. Still every page that they did they did with enthusiasm and every page meant learning a little more about the things that go on in our school and the people who do them. This year’s theme centers on the Deleware River which is our silent neighbor and the Walt Whitman Bridge in whose tall shadow we work every day. “I anchor my ship for a little while only, My messengers continually cruise away or bring their returns to me......... I know I am solid and sound, To me the converging objects of the universe perpetually flow, All are written to me, and I must get what the writing means.” Walt Whitman Song of Myself Our school job number assigned by our publisher. This number takes on a very special meaning for Aries staff since they must write it on every photo, layout, or copy page that is sent to the pub- lisher. 34 Editor-in-Chief Patty Carr Staff Photographers Brian Rafter, Pete Naughton, Brian Reed, and Mike Raub Not Pictured: David Grassi First Row: P. Under the guid- ance of Mr. Coghlan and Mr. Ettore, senior editors Denise Boyer and Pat- ty Carr were able to bring the news to the students successfully all year. There was an enthusiastic turn-out of reporters this year especially from the freshman and sophomore class. This Rampage staff tried to concen- trate on stories that would be the most interesting to Gloucester stu- dents. The editors worked hard in their spare time to pull it all together and turn the paper out by a set dead- line. They also initiated some changes this year in the letterhead and the Rampage Symbol giving our school newspaper a fresh new look. Rampage Above: Editors P. Carr, M. McCarty, J. Skamarakas. M. McShane, J. Green, B. Fitzpatrick, D. Boyer Below: Rampage Staff 36 Melodies And Masterpieces Music filled the halls of Glouces- ter Catholic once again this year with the arrival of a new music and art teacher, Mrs. Martha Bradley. This was especially evi- dent during the Christmas season when Mrs. Bradley and Mr. Kruc and a lot of talented GC students brought us a very beautiful Christ- mas liturgy. This was followed by a Christmas show which featured Mr. Rafferty as Santa Claus, Mr. Kruc, Mrs. Narducci, Miss Saunders, and Miss Ganly as Al- vin and the chipmunks, and the prancing and pawing of several senior boys as Santa’s reindeer. The chorus, led by Mrs. Bradley, featured Heather Tessmer and Linda McGinley as soloists. The work of Mrs. Bradley’s Period G Art Class was evident all year on bulletin boards throughout the building. Oneof their most popu- lar contributions was the cheerful “Welcome Ram” which now greets all visitors who enter from Cumberland Street and Ridgeway Street. 8 S I s T E R L I B R A R Y S’ c R E W It takes the combined efforts of all the students you see pictured on this page to keep our school library the relaxing and efficient place that it is. These students, under the careful guidance of Sister Mary Gerald, work in the library during their free periods. Pep Club - Tidal Wave Of Spirit The Gloucester Catholic Pep Club, under the peppy direction of Mr. O’Brien, makes sure that the spirit that GCHS is famous for stays alive and well. They can be seen filling the hallways with posters, deco- rating football player’s houses before a big game, or meeting to create an action-packed pep rally. The photos on this page represent just some of the spirited moments they have given us this year. Pep Club Officers: T. Nelio, K. Turing, M. Oleksa, L. Orzechowski, J. Giosia, D. Klaus I v The Halls Are Alive With The Sounds Of Music The halls of Gloucester Catholic resounded with the familiar tunes of The Sound of Music from January through April as students re- hearsed for this year’s play. Under the direction of Fr. McLaughlin, Heather Tessmer and Chris Seffrin led the singing as Maria and Capt. von Trapp. Other students who auditioned and were selected for major roles were Ricky Fountas, Marybeth Eskesen, Danielle Brida, Antoinette DiMeo, Su- zanne Lee, Christa Joie, Joe Evans, Joe Fountas, Kathleen Evans, and Gina Cipolone. Mr. Coleman produced the play, while Mrs. Chalmers did cos- tumes and Mrs. Pettrone did choreography. Shown here are members of the cast as they prepared for the big night. It’s All No sooner had the last exam been collected than forty-four students joined Mr. Rafferty and Mr. Heath for this year’s ski trip to Quebec, Canada. The beautiful scenery and great skiing on St. Anne’s Mountain made the twelve hour bus ride well worth it. Over the years, midterm skiing has become a very special Gloucester Catholic winter tradition. Knowledge Bowl Team Sails Through Show This year’s Knowledge Bowl team was selected after sever- al practice rounds in which students were continuously eliminat- ed. Miss Saunders, Knowledge Bowl moderator, was looking for students who were well rounded, yet also had a particular area of expertise. The final team consisted of Bart Fitzpa- trick, John Green, Maria Lepore, Bernie McDonald, Andrew Russo, and Michael Kenny. NYT Cable sponsors the Knowledge Bowl, in which 33 area high schools compete for cash prizes totalling up to ten thousand dollars. Each win entitles a school to a $750 cash prize. Gloucester Catholic’s team defeated Northern Burlington Regional in the first round and was looking forward to going all the way to the final face off. Above and right: Joe Carozza and Billy Allison concentrate on lifting. Below: Mr. Rafferty gives tips on cor- rect form to some of the students in his program. Pumping Iron In The Pit This year Mr. Rafferty initiated a winter fitness program in the basement of the annex for all interested students. The weight room is a place where the average athlete can become a great athlete. It is an environment where boys and girls grow to be young men and women. But the magic of the room only comes when the person pours himself or herself totally into the program. It is an opportunity to step out of the easy way of life and create a new person, with a better physique. The only way to become a great athlete is to try. Without trying you will always be nothing more than a person who says “I could have been.” The year started with many question marks and openings, but by the time of the Highland game things seemed to fit into place. At the mid-point of the season we were 4-1 with upset victories over Bishop Eustace and Overbrook along with victories over Highland and Cherry Hill West. Our only setback was against Camden Catholic. Visions of play-offs were on our minds as we entered the sec- ond half of the season; however things did not work out the way we had planned. Injuries began to pile up and our lack of depth began to show. The last 4 games ended in defeat and our final record was 4- 5. The steady play of Joe Reed, Jim McGroarty, Jay Wolf and Tony DeLuzio were highlights of the year. The surprise of the year was the running of Junior Donn Staiano and the defense of Sopho- more Kyle McKinney. The fact that the Rams started 6 underclassmen on Defense and 5 on Offense makes the future look bright. Varsity FRONT SEATED, L-R; M. Paulik, J. Uisco, J. Read. J. McGroarty, J. Wolf, J. Diluzio not in photo “Their Hearts Are In The Game” Under the direction of coaches Joe Rafferty, Sam Misrendino, and John Yowler, the J.V. foot- ball team had an excellent record of 5-1-2. Although practice time togeth- er was limited, the team worked hard to come together as a unit. They are already planning for an even better season next year by using the off sea- son to lift weights and run. Coach Rafferty says that next year’s team will not be big in size but in heart. It is that the heart that made them winners this year and will do the same for them in the future. hman Football The Freshman team was plagued by a series of in- juries early in the season. Despite these setbacks the rest of the team worked hard and came up with a very respectable 3-4-1 season. Most of the pictures on this page were taken at a game at Bishop Eustace which was one of the team’s victories. Here, as in later games, they displayed the talent and tenacity which make them a bright spot in GC’s football future. Seated: M. Ruffalo, N. Ruggeri, J. Gifford. Kneeling: S. Maulo, J. Long Rally To Rebuild For Girls Tennis, this was a re- building season after losing five of last year’s players. The team was lead by Senior Captain, Mary Beth Eskesen, who sup- plied the spirit and the drive to keep the team going through its losses. She always gave 100%, both on and off the court. Kathy Kerley returned to her spot at 1st doubles and J.V. players Kathleen Evans, Sarah McDonald, Roxanne Noonan, and Chris Bobiak moved up to admirably fill slots on the Varsity ros- ter. Senior Chris Witasick joined Kathy Kerley at first doubles and was a great asset to the team. Freshmen Laura Neumann and Chris Thomson joined the team this year and filled in where needed for doubles. The team is looking forward to an improved 1984 season given the benefit of this year’s much needed experience. I Standing: Mary Beth Eskesen, Chris Witasick, Chris Bobiak, coach Karin Ganly. This is especially impressive because it was accomplished with a team consisting of all underclassmen. This young team made it all the way to the state tournament where they lost to Mater Dei by a margin of 2 to 3. The team was led by John Lavin, First Singles; Mick Rullo, Second Singles; Chris Campbell and Mike Raube, First Doubles, and Dan Gen- daszek and Pete Naughton at Second Doubles. Special mention must be made of John Lavin’s excellent year. John capped his all Confence season by winning the confence tournament thus becoming the number one player in the conference. V7 Girls Kick Off New Sport For GC Considering that they began the year as a totally inexperi- enced team, girls’ soccer was tremendously improved by the end of the season. This was the first year that Gloucester Catholic had girls’ soccer as a fall sport and Coach Burbano was impressed with the positive attitude and GC spirit displayed by the team. Even though their record was 1-7- 1 they finished the season strongly with very close games against well established teams which have been league and state leaders for a long time. The coach predicts a much improved team next year despite the loss of several strong seniors including Captain Andrea Burgo, Center Karen Ackley, and Goalie Michelle Kuropatwa. above: Captain Andrea Burgo below: Goalie Mi chelle Kuropatwa 1st row: M. Donnelly Boys’ Soccer Strikes Back The 1983-84 Ram soccer team fared very well against tough competition in league play. They finished strongly at the end of the season, thus showing their opposition that they will be a team to reckon with in 1984-85. With the addition of Freshmen Brian Mulholland and Ron Ni- chols, our defense played very well all season. Joining Captains Steve DeVito and Lou Burgo next year will be Senior Mike Esposito who will help to strengthen the team. 53 Girls Field Hockey Sets Goals Varsity: 1st Row: J. Crosson, C. Ernharth, M. Despite a weak season in 1983 Coach Barbara Hutchinson feels 1984 will bring a big turn-around in G.C. girls field hockey, Most of the games lost this year were by slim one goal margins and the returning 1984 team will be led by a group of very strong Junior players. Two of the outstanding players on this year’s team were seniors Meg Maguire and Patty Allen. Meg was an outstanding goalie making a hun- dred saves and having only 30 goals scored against her, despite a weak de- fense. Patty was both a morale boost- er and a great right wing. Several girls on the team were named to All Conference second team. Mi- chelle Hampton, Terry Klatt, and Julie Rizanski made All Conference, and Fran Thomas and Meg Maguire received honorable mention. The J-V team was lead by Sue Flynn, Mary Flynn, and Mary Bryson, and supported by Ann Marie Dougherty, Patrice Allison, and Stacy Kapple- man. Many of these girls will be a part of the outstanding girl’s field hockey team we look forward to next season. Bottom: G. Wade, M. Beebe, A. Deluzio, J. Barney. Middle: M. Fronckowiak, P. Tighe, C. Looking Up A team’s record doesn’t always reflect the whole story. Despite the few wins the team had, four matches were lost on a total of only six points. This year’s team improved a great deal under the fine coaching of Nick Morina and assistant coach Ron Cockrell, both having outstanding Paulsboro credentials. Head coach Morina feels the team has come a long way in the two years he has been coaching and hopes the future will be brighter. The team, led by ju- nior captains Mike McConville and Mike Beebe, and senior captains Tony Deluzio and Jerry Allamby, came up against some tough Olympic Conference rivals. Highland, Over- brook, Eastern and Williamstown were among their toughest competition. This year’s highlight came against Washington Twp. in a 30-28 upset victory. All year the team could be found putting in many hard hours of practice in order to be in the best physical condition when they stepped onto the mat. JV Cheerleaders: L. Wilkinson, S. Burleigh, D. They per- formed two opening cheers and a pom-pom routine, and built one of their amazing pyramids to really dazzle the judges. We all know how special our cheerleaders are and how hard they work every day after school, so it was great to see them get the recognition they de- serve. Mrs. Maulo’s hard-working varsity cheerleaders are Chris Dailey, Diane Mann, Terry McHugh, Meg Keane, Lisa Mar- cianna, Mary Lamplugh, Carol Gambale, Karen Fronckowiak, Donna Mann, Missy Lee, and Ka- ren Reader. We competed against the schools in the Olympic Conference and other schools such as Holy Cross. We also ran against Delran and Sterling. This was the most run- ners we have ever had and also by far, the best girls cross-country team at G.C. We had fourteen runners on the varsity. We consistently placed 5 or 6 runners in the top ten and de- feated Triton and Delran. In cross- country, the lowest score wins. Each runner’s place is added into a team score—fifteen being the lowest and fifty the highest.” “Julie Fish was the lone senior and top runner. Joanne Hampton was one of the top freshmen in all of South Jersey. Donna Iacovone and Mary Sigmund are potentially the two best runners at Gloucester Catholic. They are doing well in their first year of cross-country. Cindy Petroshock, Sue Vaca, Dan- ielle Klink, and Beth Scott have all placed on the top ten in their races. Ann and Kathi Terifay, Jill Sisco, Wendy Wagner, and Paula Coward are also rapidly improving. If they keep working the team could be out- standing. Sigmund, Iacovone, and Hampton are good lead runners and the other runners all provide depth.” “I think all girls who would like to try a sport should join cross-country, even if they have never been success- ful at sports. We start out easy and progress to the point where three miles is relativly easy to run. We would have fifty girls out for cross- country if they realized the benefit of the sport. Cross-country is a three mile run through woods and fields. The course is usually somewhere be- hind school. This is a lifetime sport. In other words, what the athletes learn—stretching and getting in shape—will come in handy long after they are out of school.” 58 Here We Come! Boys Cross Country made a tremendous effort in the fall 1984 season to pick up the slack left when their number one runner, Pete Worthing- ton, was side-lined with tendinitis. Led by sen- iors Pat Masters and Ron Block the team worked hard to scratch a few victories from a difficult season. Coach McClusky considers self discipline and intelligence the two most important components of a good, long-dis- tance runner. His Cross Country team runs seven to twelve miles a day during the season, and combines inter- val and short work with speed running and anerobic run- ning to produce well-conditioned athletes. Gloucester Catholic’s First Swim Team One of the newest additions to GCHS’s full sports schedule is our new swim team. Composed most- ly of underclassmen, the team had an encourag- ing first year. With a quick glance at the girl’s record of 1 and 4 and the boy’s record of one win, one might assume that no accomplishments were made. But being able to organize a first year team and bring them to a win is a great success. At the start of the season, many did not know the proper way to execute “odd” strokes such as breast- stroke and butterfly. By the end of the year everyone could perform these strokes, were able to compete, and had improved their particular best stroke. A typical practice schedule was one hour in the water three times a week. It would begin with a twenty lap warm-up, followed by work on individual strokes, arm movements and kicking. To add life to the routine the last 5 or 10 minutes were devoted to relays or water polo. The meets themselves consisted of two relays: a 200 meter medley (back, breaststroke, butterfly and free style) and a 400 meter freestyle in which four people each swam 50 or 100 meters. There were also eight individual events, a 200 meter individual medley and a diving competition. This season seven people qualified for the league cham- pionships. Maria Senula and John Aldridge qualified in the 50 free. Maria, along with Gina O’Connell qualified in the 100 free. Gina also qualified in the 100 breast- stroke. Liz McComb qualified in the 100 backstroke and Sharon Pusey in the 100 butterfly. Sharon also quali- fied in diving along with Andrea and Lou Burgo. Coaches Bob Horvath and Joan Chalmers were very pleased with the progress made by Gloucester Catho- lic’s first swim team and are planning a merger of the boys’ and girls’ teams for next season. The following students were members of Gloucester Catholic’s first ever swim team: Seniors: Rich Chrone, Darrell Noonan, Mark Sharp, Pete Worthington, Andrea Burgo, MaryBeth Eske- sen, Dolores Klinewski, and Maria Senula. Juniors: Mary Bryson, Chris DiSilvestro, Karen Ham- mill, and Roxanne Noonan. Sophomores: Paul Allamby, Lou Burgo, Paul Ernest, George Kaufman, Jeff Labbree, Michelle Bridge, Joyce Flynn, Liz McComb, Cindi Petroschock, Shar- on Pusey, and Rob Tomilson. Freshmen: John Aldridge, Scott Maulo, Carolyn Hagg, Sue Hummell, Krista Lepore, Kathy McKen- na, Danielle Mezalis, Melissa Noonan, Regina O’Con- nell, Sue Steckel, and Lillian Tessman. Despite a record well below .500 for the season, our varsity bas- ketball team managed to be competitive in almost every game. This year’s young team had a start- ing line-up that usually consisted of four or five juniors. They played a tough schedule, including nationally ranked Camden High School, but welcomed the competition and saw it as an opportunity to learn and from j which to build. Sophomores Bob Chew, John Griffith, Kyle McKin- I ney, and Kevin Wilson were added to the roster at mid season. Above: Mike Lidner pulls down a rebound. Left: Brian Green cuts off a pass. Super Sophs Junior Varsity basketball, coached by Mr. Pat Murphy, is the building block for future varsity teams. This year’s JV was an all-sophomore team, and one of the hardest working that Mr. Murphy can remember. One of their most satisfying moments came when they defeated Gloucester High (73-62) for the first time in two years. Their final record was 11-8 in a season full of experiences that will prepare them for varsity competition. Freshman Netters . . . Lots Of Promise Freshman boys’ basketball had an excellent season with a record of 12-7 with two games left to play. The majority of the team were underclassmen. A two year plan was put into effect to be competitive in the Olympic Conference, which contains powerful teams in girl’s track at Washington Township and Edgewood, among others. “Ordinary efforts produce ordinary results” was the motto of the team. Donna Iacovone and Mary Sigmund were two of the best freshmen runners in the conference. Julie Fish, Beth Pascal (captain), Karen Morris and Kathy Sweeney also showed outstanding promise. With a positive attitude toward work, the team had fun and im- proved a great deal. Top: E. Warburton, K. Sweeney, S. McDonald, L. Coniglio, G. Schaller. C. Hawley, M. Eskesen, S. Vacca, B. Scott, J. Spring 1984 should bring some well-deserved re- wards for the hard work and dedication which characterizes these athletes. “Last track season I was the assistant coach. It was my first experience with Gloucester Catholic stu- dents as athletes. The athletes for the most part were loyal. Pete Worthington stands out in my mind because he was always willing to give 1009c no matter what the odds. Ron Block and Pat Masters also contributed greatly to the team. Because of running many long and hard practices, their hard work and dedica- tion is now paying off in cross country. Jay Wolf, although it was his first year out, worked hard at learning the technical aspects of the Discus and Shot. Jay’s work will pay off this track season. Gordon Thomas worked diligently at the high jump and sprints. Steve Barns rounded out the middle and long distance teams.” Bottom Row: Ed Kennedy, Nick Simila, Ron Block, Mike Burr, Pete Worthington; Second Row: Mike Kenny, Gordon Thomas, Joe Har- kins, Bernie Oleksa; Top Row: John Prendergast, Coach McCluskey, Steve Barns, Tony Deluzio, Jay Wolf, Pat Masters. Then it was on to the State championship where they played another close game but lost to Immaculate Con- ception six to two. Just like last year’s National League Championship Phillies, our girls battled all the way to the pinna- cle and just missed the top prize. After securing the National Division title in the Olympic Conference, they lost the Group B Parochial State title in Princeton to St. Mary’s. Mike Laudisio, John Sacchetti, Steve Mondile, Marc Pecsi, and Bob Cleaver were named to All Conference and Mondile was additionally honored by being named to all South Jersey. Tom Bell was also a league leader with a 170 average and Bill Clay, Rich Colletti, Steve Doyle, and Russ Cullen were other outstanding con- tributors among a very talented team. At press time, the girls’ team was in fourth place but had hopes of moving up in the standings in the remaining games. Most valuable player was Fran Mulholland with a three over par 39.1 average for nine holes. Most Improved player was freshman Steve DeVito and the award for Best Team Spirit went to John Rhoda. The chess team at Gloucester Catholic began in 1980 and competes in matches with several other South Jersey high schools in- cluding Woodbury, Bishop Eustace, Cherry Hill East, Camden, Deptford, Audubon, and Kingsway. In ad- dition she has broken the school record of 1350 points set by Renee Mahon in 1979. With six regular season games still to go, she scored 1755 points. Lisa, a forward, is a pleasure to watch as she moves around the court and drives for the basket. She has been playing basketball since she was in first grade and will be playing at least another four years at Villanova, where she has received a full four year schol- arship. Kathie Beisel, new coach of girl’s basketball, was a small forward and swing guard for Villanova. Awesome The incredible streak (82 games without a loss) was broken this year but Glou- cester Catholic Girls’ Basketball was still an awesome power and their consistent excellence has become a local legend. Their new coach, Kathie Beisel, describes them as a team that always hustles and a team that is very coachable. Miss Beisel is a recent gra- duate of Villanova where she scored over a thousand points and was a University Player of the Year. When this book went to print, the team had a record of 15-2 and were well on their way to another conference cham- pionship. Left: Varsity team and coaches. Michelle Hampton, (standing) Patty David, Chris Delaney, Coach Jim Cooper, Jill Crosson, and Kris Turing. Coach Maria Quinn describes her Freshman players as fun to work with. AUTUMN TRADITIONS MOTHER’S DAY GAME NOVEMBER 22, 1983 MONSTER HALLOWEEN 1983 PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW To sculpture a conscious, active faith in the growing believer is the starting point and finish line of an education that is called “catholic”. In a time where values are adrift, a spiritually- keen Christian uncovers an anchor in his friendship with God. Gloucester Catholic ardently strives to create a constant atmo- sphere saturated with the continuing presence of Christ. Forever encouraging all who join this family, our school alivens an eternal flavor of love which touches even the hardest hearts. Through learning theology, one understands how the Lord is alive here. Through prayer and liturgy, one celebrates that the lord is alive here. From the Opening Mass through the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Holy Week liturgies, to the Ring Mass and Graduation, the Catholic faith is proclaimed in real participation. Whether the service be eucharistic exposition or reconciliation, during Advent or Lent, by a particular class or the entire school, we are commit- ted as an institution to be evangelists of the Gospel we teach. Rough Sailing In High Winds Diane Mann and Jim Ferry Joan Scarduzio and Jim Dunn Kara Turing and Ed Dyson Lisa Yowler and Kevin West Karen Ackley and Pat Arnotte It was the coldest and windiest Homecoming that anyone there could remember. But the arctic winds did not diminish the support and spirit of the Gloucester Catholic fans. The game itself was a close contest won by Triton in the last four minutes, breaking a long-standing Gloucester tradition of winning homecomings. Fifteen former Homecoming queens dating back to 1952 joined this year’s shivering court for pre-game and half-time activities. A String band provided an added touch of festivity and everyone stayed huddled together long enough to see Joan Scarduzio crowned as queen. This year’s theme was “Never Gonna Let You Go” and despite the disappointing loss, over 300 people thawed out in time to attend the Homecoming dance and celebrate another important Gloucester tradition. Vocal soloists were Heather Tessmer and Linda McGinley; Christa Joie Many parents and friends watched played the flute. Each Junior person- with misty eyes as new upper class- ally received his ring from Father men emerged. After the Mass, dinner was served in the cafeteria and dancing followed in the gym. Music was provided by “The Pros” and new “Memories and Moments” were added to the Ju- nior’s growing list. Countdown Hundredth Night, a traditional senior celebration of one hundred days to go before graduation, was held on March eighth in the cafeteria. Hun- dredth Night was first celebrated at Gloucester Catholic nine years ago. It began as a spaghetti dinner that the faculty cooked for the seniors, then it was a talent show, and finally it found its present form as a kind of two way roast between the seniors and the faculty. Mr. Nark and Michele Oleksa, along with many other seniors and faculty, did an excellent job of organizing this year’s hilarious evening. Who will forget Greg Weisenbach as Fr. Martelli? Or Mr. Nark and the Narkettes? Or Mr. Heath as Michael Jackson and Mr. Murphy as Joe Fountas? Or Mr. Rafferty as Boy George? Or Jim Tiefenthaler as Mrs. Woods and Daniele Brida as Miss Saunders? Or The Rolling Stones feature featuring Ed Butwin? The buffet dinner and the dance that were included with the skits made the evening a totally memorable first step on the senior’s final march toward graduation. Should 1 give him a blue card or not? No, you can’t have three hoagies, Dante. She should have used a conditioner. Class of 1987 Mr. Heath promised that this would work. Identify the mystery student. 86 Rams At Work And Play SPIRIT WEEK brought something old, something new, but always for everyone, fun to do. The Juniors walked off with honors in hall decoration, while just about everyone got into the act in the crazy hat competition. Gloucester Catholic enjoys a well-earned reputation for its school spir- it. Hall decorations stayed in place for a week, so they could be enjoyed by visitors on parents’ night. Spirit Love Boat 1983 We’ve Got Tonight” was the theme of the 1983 Prom. . This special evening was held on May 6,1983, at Nico- losi’s in Woodbury. The Prom was very successful in performance as well as at- tendance. As one of many developing traditions at G.C.H.S., a first male court accompanied the girl’s court. The prom queen was Toni Neilio and the king was Timmy Lutz. This night was successful thanks to Mr. Bob Nark, Mr. Jim Kruc, and the junior class who worked hard all year selling everything from pen- nants to candy bars. Your years here at Gloucester Catholic have been spent in preparation for the challenges that lie ahead. Accept them willingly and conquer them peacefully. On your journey . . . I wish you joy. Joy is the command of Christ Himself, not an automatic wish or a pleasant courtesy, but an order. “If you love Me, you would rejoice ... ask that your joy may be full.” May your joy be more than a superficial masque for a moment. Let it be a happy selfless giving of yourselves for others and Christ in the moment of now! I wish you courage . . . Few times in our life do we encounter a person of true courage-a person of principle. It is this type of person who stands for best doing what they know to be right. Many times your actions can expel you from the “popular circle” but it is this “price” which adds to the difficulty of the situation, the difficulty of doing and not just saying. May each of you grow in the courage to let yourselves be vulnerable. To be sensitive and completely open to one another’s needs is the journey of a lifetime. Why not begin now with a single step? I wish you Love ... A love that comes from the giving of ourself to others. A love that dwells within each one of you. Probe deep and search out! You can give without loving, but you can’t love without giving. Congratulations to you all. May God keep you close to Him always. Kevin West “Westie”. Later.” “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters.” Naomi Rivera Jan. 23, 1966 — Sept. 9, 1982 The Class of ’84 dedicates this yearbook to Naomi and shares some of their memories with those not fortunate enough to have known her: “I remember how happy she always seemed and her outgo- ing personality.” “I regret that I did not get to know Naomi better but what I did know of her I will miss.” “The thing I most remember about Naomi was the great feeling she threw off on you. I’ll never forget the great talks Pav, Naomi, and I had in the lonely cafeteria.” “Na, we had a few memories together. I wish there could have been more. I miss you and I wish you were still here.” “She was one of the my best friends when she left us. I would like to thank Michele Keane and GCHS for pulling me through.” “I believe I knew her well and I would have to say that she loved all of GCHS and everyone in it.” “One thing I can remember very well is that whenever she was around, I was always laughing. I miss her terribly.” “About Naomi-1 didn’t tell anyone about this but the day Naomi died I made a promise to myself to use Naomi as inspiration to make me work hard as a wrestler. I wasn’t very good my freshman or sophomore year but that may be because I just came out for the sport. I made a promise that day to offer any wins I had that season to Naomi just to show appreciation for how friendly a person she was to me and to others. My frosh and soph years in wrestling I only had a combined total of 4 wins; but my junior year I went 11-5-1 and hope to do even better this year. This is my way of remembering and showing appreciation of Naomi.” 141 Senior Directory Dina Abbonizio 274 Mercer Avenue Bellmawr, New Jersey James Blymer 20 2nd Street Brooklawn, N.J.
