“
Gloucester Catholic High School 2 It seems so long ago that our class first came to be. I’ve known you all forever or that’s how it seems to me; But it wasn’t that long ago we first looked toward today, When everything we said and did was pointing us this way. We all seemed like children then: We’ve watched each other grow Physically and mentally, in more ways than we know. You’ve given a part of you to make a part of me, Sharing all we learned, till finally we see, A world is all we make it: the one we made here is good, But it couldn’t last forever, we never said it would. So we’re going out today and make one to endure; We’ll build it from our soul and what was here before. We’ve seen the way It has been, we see the way we are; We know the way they can be, our youth will take us far; But no one of us can do it all, we all must do our part, To build a world of love, the love that’s in our hearts. We can’t forget the things we’ve learned, The times we’ve shared are ours, They will be with us forever, countless as the stars. So shed tears of joy, forget your sorrows, For we will never lose yesterday’s, only gain tomorrows. 7 10 11 mm WMmzmmm IHBtJ •.( .' v ,: U;: The Most Rev. Geroge H. Guilfoyle Bishop of Camden Rev. Glendon Robertson Whenever I ponder my role as an educator, I suddenly discover how difficult it is to really care for people. I realize, not unlike the concerned parent, that the human dimension is often a multi-phased dilemma, fraught with needs and desires that best can be addressed with a stern “no rather than with an acquie- sance to fleeting whim. How easy it would be to respond to life’s yearnings with an ever-present yes’’. How much more popular would be an answer that entails nothing of demand or sacrifice But then, would I really care? And would the life I present be real? The responsible person knows that he or she can't say or do the things that people sometimes expect. Maybe that’s by neces- sity, since much of what an educator—or parent—says is often the type of wisdom that is directed not just for the moment but for the days and months and years ahead. In other words, what is said must stand the test of time. This yearbook is a reaffirmation of our committment to living for reasons beyond those of the moment. For these pages give evidence of times well spent and goals achieved. These pages show proof of the self-denial needed to pursue visions and dreams. These pages convey to us Jesus’ own conviction that “not by bread alone does man live . To be involved in someone else’s formation and growth is exciting. It is also a privilege for which I am expecially grateful. The family here at Glouces- ter Catholic High School (the faculty, the students, and in particular, the class of 1978) has been a source of great satisfaction to me both as an ed- ucator and, more importantly, as a priest. The pages of this book reflect the joys of high school. They reflect the things and the people that mean so much now. My prayer is that they also re- flect for the graduating seniors a growth in their desire and committment to become the fully human persons that God has called them to be- come. Fr. Martin There is an ancient proverb that says: Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a life- time!” To all who thumb through these pages in distant years, especially our seniors, may the memories recorded here attest to beliefs founded in faith and humanity. We who have been down this path before know the reality of our ideals. We pray you will too. Fr. McIntyre Sister Ann Leo, O.P. Seniors’ Lounge Cip roars at a humorous anecdote while Steve searches puzzlingly for the punch line Oats abides by President Teddy Roosevelt s famous quote. 'Walk softly and carry a big stick. An unnamed senior who was fair- ly adventurous and tired of spending frees m the cafeteria, decided, one day in the recent past to visit the senior lounge. Her cafeteria comrades all thought her crazy, but she set out. determined to visit what the handbook termed A comfort- able meeting place for respons- ible socializing. Halfway down the first floor hall- way she almost cancelled her visit, when a senior boy whizzed by on an overstuffed chair. She shrugged this off and continued on her journey Upon reaching her destination our unnamed senior was greet- ed by the sounds of rock music and a senior boy asking for two kinds of identification. When she produces these he grudgingly ad- mits her. The next problem was finding a seat. The two couches were oc- cupied by seemingly sleeping sen- iors. who she decided not to dis- turb. Most of the other chairs were taken but she finally found one After clearing away the half eaten lunches, she sat down and waited for the responsible socializing to begin. No one noticed she was there and any attempt to talk was lost in the music. Determined to give the lounge a chance she opened her book to study. But this effort was halted when a wad of stuffing from a chair came sailing past her head. Being able to take only so much, she fled to the safety of her quiet cafeterai. Looking back on that day this is one senior who can agree with the administrators when they say: Senior loungers shape up or ship out!” And to the underclassmen, who sit there snickering remember this — Blessed are the under- classmen for they shall inherit the senior lounge!!?? Sister Lisa, as the new modera- tor. kept a watchful eye over the council. Sister. President Grace Kelly and the council have worked very hard to pro- vide more enthusiasm and school spirit. The 1977-78 school year began with the student council or- ganizing a used-book sale. As the year progressed the student government sponsored the Halloween Dance, pro- viding entertainment, food, and prizes for the best costumes. One of the most important event on the calender of the coun- cil was the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive. The Student body under the direction of the council provided 25 families with Thanksgiving dinner. Top Row L to R: K. Neilon. J. Rafferty. S. Heisler. G. Kelly. M. O'Donnell. K. Nolan. Bottom: P. Originally known as the Maryscript, the Rampage has continued with the tradition of informing and entertaining the students of Gloucester Catholic. As in the past, it provides an opportunity for stu- dents to display their creative literary talents. Moderated by Mrs. Katherine Coghlan, the 1978 Rampage has broken with past tradition by altering its organization. Previously, the paper was directed by a single editor-in-chief. This year, however, marked the initiation of a revolving editor policy. Under the new system, each issue is managed by one of four editors: Donna Barrett, Eileen Pollack, Kim Slack, and Marguerite Silineo. This innovation allows each editor to develop her unique style in ut- ilizing the staff’s talents. Through the Rampage, comprehensive coverage of all student activities is maintained. Teacher fea- tures, editorials, and cartoons compliment each edition. The Rampage is a vital means of communi- cation between students of all levels. Chorus and Tri-M This year's Chorus and Tri-M continued the musical tradi- tion at Gloucester Catholic High School. Under the direction of Sister Ann Leo our musical students exercised their vocal chords during study halls and after school. All of their diligent practices helped to put chorus in to the top muscial form, Gloucester Catholic High School is known for. This musical form was displayed sev- eral times throughout the year. The students performed at several of the area malls, spreading the Christmas spirit to shoppers. A concert which includes the Halleluiah Chorus, several soloists, and a candlelight procession was held in the gym. The chorus also performed at the Echelon Mall for Catholic School Week in January. The Tri-M, a group of Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors with special talent, spent some'of their spare time visiting senior citizens and nursing homes. They also performed for sev- eral community groups. The Chorus also enriches it’s musical background by attending the area classical con- certs of leading talents. 66 1st ROW L To R: B. Rafter. J. This year, however, moderator Mr. Gerald Sharff has re- vived the program. Under his watchful eye, this year's team has achieved much success, al- though most of the team has never participated in Forensics before. Forensics is, in simple terms. Public Speaking. Members can participate in various speech events: declamation, original oratory, extem- poraneous speaking, dramatic reading, and ora- torical interpretation. They compete against stu- dents from this area at interscholastic meets. By participating in Forensics, team members can build up self confidence and discover hidden tal- ents. This can aid students in their day to day school assignments. Forensics is not only scholastically oriented. Throughout the year, at the various meets, aquaintances are made and friendships evolve. The final meet is filled with address exchanges, picture taking and long good-byes. Pep Club Boosts School Spirit 1st Row: L-R M Sebastian. C. Carmo. R. Meloni. 2nd Row: J. Kerrigan. K Sampson. D. The Pep Club consists of a number of girls from all levels, who work long and hard to keep the spirit in our school. When asked why they are Pep Club members the answer ranged from, “Fun.” to “Somebody has to do it,” to “I love this school and I want to do any- thing I can for it.” St Mary's Band drums the spirit into G.C.H.S. Every Wednesday night, (con- ditions permitting) the Ski Club members went to Ski Mountain to prepare themselves for the ski weekend in Killington. Vermont. On January 19. Gloucester Catholic students excitedly set out for Pine Hill to enjoy a day of skiing. The students arrived at Ski Mountain at 12:00 p.m. Immediately they began bundling up warmly and gathering up their equipment. For the inexperienced, beginner lessons were provided on arrival. Later in the afternoon, most G.C.H.S. skiers were racing down the hill like pros: whereas some of the beginners were doing their best to get up the hill. As everyone returned to their skis after dinner, nature suprised us with the beautiful snow of the Blizzard of '78 . The snow combined with the spirited students of Gloucester Catholic made Ski Day a success, giving refreshing relief to post-exam tension. G.C. Shuss Booms Killington Excited Skiers prepare for a day on the slopes. As tradition speaks for itself, so did the marvelous weekend the Ski Club spent in Killington, Vermont. A- bout midnight February 10, the club arrived at the Killington Country Resort in Pittsfield, Vt. They im- mediately unloaded the bus in 10 below zero weather and were assigned their bunks in the cozy but some- what crowded lodge. Saturday morning after a hearty breakfast, the stu- dents took over Killington’s three spectacular moun- tains. The highlight of the weekend occured Sunday morning and when the entire ski club met at the top of Killington Peak for a group run down the 4% mile Great Eastern trail. The skiing conditions were excellent, the mountains were beautiful, and the trip was an unparralled suc- cess. Mrs. K. and the ski club are already planning the 1979 ski trip. Some of the other noteable differences between elementary school and high school included variation of course selection, participation in athletic programs, promotion of school spirit through pep; rallies and the rotation of the class schedule. “I like the schedule, it’s bet- ter than sitting in one class all day.” -Nancy McCormick “A challenge for the schedule!” -Bob Tricocci An important aspect of freshman year is the development of social awareness. The gala “Freshman Frolic” on November 12 was held to achieve those ends. Clad in their finery, the students danced to the music of Barry Manilow, Peter Frampton and Boz Scaggs. Jun- ior Joe Raube served as disc jockey. Coached by Miss Deirdre Kane, the girls' hockey team showed drive and potential, exemplified by their 2-4-2 showing. Football, basketball and soccer rounded out the Athletic schedule. To a large extent school spirit and loyalty were generated in the homeroom. Those individuals in charge of the moderation of these rooms include Mrs. Anna Decher, Mrs. Jane Woods, Miss Virginia Brigandi, Miss Lenore Howe and Rev. John Sullivan. The freshmen are also involved in the Student Council organization at Gloucester Catholic High School. Kim Camp, Joanne Lubonski, Nancy McCormic and Bernie Morrison represented the class of 1981 in initiating a closer communication among the Freshmen, admin- istration, and the faculty. The Democratic Process of election was put into effect. All inter- ested students registered their nominations for student council positions. During the intense campaigning a day was reserved for speechmaking and signposting. After the Freshmen were familiarized with the candidates positions, the official balloting took place. The results were now history. This was the first time that many Freshmen had ever participated in the workings of democracy on such a scale. The excitement gen- erated by the selection of council officers showed that the class of 1981 was capable of mature decision making. M S. Wesley T. Wesley ‘‘It is a great honor for these girls to serve as Student Coun- cilers. They have the important task to serve as a liason be- tween the administration and the freshmen.” -Sister Lisa, O.P., Faculty moderator of Student Council. “Their election was delayed this year because of the late dated Freshman Frolic. To suddenly become a member of a large group, most of whom you don’t know, would make most people feel insecure and introverted. Coming out of their freshman year, this year's sophomores have formed a strong sense of class unity. We stick together and are like one big family. -Joe Farrell Their insecurity having vanished, the sophomores were left free to join the Gloucester Catholic family as full-fledged members of the student body. The sophomores jumped at the opportunity. They popped up on all the varsity teams passing, shooting, scoring; and if they weren’t performing on the court or field, they were cavorting in the stands, encouraging and cheering their teams. Our class has caught the spirit of Gloucester Catholic and we know how to have a good time. -Diane Maronski With this spirit, the sophomore class spread overwhelming enthu- siams throughout the halls of Gloucester Catholic. Under the supervision of class moderator, Mrs. Anna Decher. the sophomores participated in many school activities. They started the year with a blast at the Sophomore Pizza Party. This gala affair took place in the cafeteria where Joe Raube provided musical entertainment. The sophomores also actively participated in the Homecoming festivities where they won the spirit award for their float. Members of the faculty, administration and alumni see a large amount of potential in our sophomores, who, with the right attitude and guidance have the ability to make the next two years of high school and the rest of their lives, full of triumphs and memories. “This class with the right at- titude could go far, they have the potential to succeed. I think teaching a matured class of 1980 would be a joy. Marc Tickner, teacher So the sophomores are looking toward the future, their first two years just a memory, but what a memory it is! As the years slip by and the students come and go in Gloucester Catholic and many classes will leave very little to be remembered by. But from the brief look at our sophs of '78, they give us reason to believe that they will leave a permanent mark on our school. “We want people to remember the class of 1980 as one of the best ever turned out by Glou- cester Catholic.” -William Popjoy Looking at the past two years as an indication of things to come, I feel that the class of '80 is not one that will be easily forgotten here at Glou- cester Catholic High School. -Mrs. Nolan Phys. The childhood dreams which once existed have finally blossomed into reality. “Junior year has been really good so far, and probably will be my best year. Our class has something special, and that is that we all know each other. Everyone is really friendly, and because of this, it brings us closer together as a class.” -Annamarie lacovone A reality that includes a wide spectrum of social activities through- out the year to help propel we students into young adulthood. The Junior Ring Dance, after weeks of hard work in the beginning of this year, brought unity among the members of our class. The prom, a year long effort, proved to be a success and reinforced this unity. ♦ “Junior year has been my best year so far because everyone has become closer and more friendly. It is alot better when you know more people. Our Junior class is a great class, and will become even better before our final year. -Mary Fryer Our Junior year has come to a close and all we have left is our memories. Underwood Junior Class Has Dreams And Visions On Tuesday October 25, the members of the Class of 1979 received their traditional Gloucester Catholic rings during a special liturgy serivce. St. Mary’s Church provided the setting for the Mass and distribution. A buffet dinner in the school cafeteria was pre- pared for all attending juniors. Later that evening, the festivities were brought to a close by the annual Ring Dance. An appropriate theme, Dreams and Visions, embodied the mood and spirit of the evening. The gym and Church also reflected the at- mosphere through decorations de- signed by ring committee members. Departing from the traditional format, the rock group Plynth” introduced a repertoire of original selections. The Ring Dance had taken on a concert setting. Dancing was sporadic, while the students gathered to listen to the unique musical presentation. Elevated to upperclassman status, the juniors departed from the dance gazing at their sparkling new garnet rings and contemplating their own dreams and visions. Linda Cuccinotti receives her ring. Valentine Dance A Sweetheart Success Joe announces raffle winner On February 18, 1978, the Glou- cester Catholic High School gym was the scene of a Valentine Dance sponsored by the junior class. All who attended danced to the music of Summer Wind, and Coyote Joe supplied music be- tween the bands breaks. The Juniors also sold refreshments and raffled off two chocolate filled hearts. All proceeds from the dance will be put towards the Junior-Senior Prom. Coordinator of the dance, Mrs. Deborah Dra- bold, and class president, Mary- ann Porch felt the dance was a success and that a good time was had by all who attended. Seniors Preview Capital Colleges The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception impressed the group. Seniors from Gloucester Catholic and Cam- den Catholic got a taste of college life in the nation's capital when they visited Georgetown and Catholic University on November 11. The trip was planned by G.C. guidance director, Reverend Peter Sulli- van and Reverend William Hait of Camden Catholic. Beginning at 5:30 a.m., the day was de- signed to allow prespective students to view these institutions of higher learning. Upon arrival at Catholic U., the students di- vided into two groups and proceeded to their respective schools. An orientation session provided by the Dean of Admissions familariqed them with the educational philosophies and standards of the school. In order to attain a better understanding of their particular area of interest, students spoke to individuals in that field. Department heads, guidance counselors and students were among those questioned. Senior Paul Avallone when asked about the trip replied, It was really informative and helped me realize the dramatic difference between high school and college.” Sim- ilar remarks were echoed by many who at- tended the trip. 106 Museum Search Stirs Seniors Senior - Class and Culture The Washington Monument from Constitution Park. The senior Philosophy class found themselves in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. on November 14 The purpose of the trip was to inter- pret eight famous works of art by world renowned artists. Forty seniors found themselves wait- ing in a Chartered bus on Cumberland Street at 7:30 a.m. The destination was our nation's capitol. The first step was the National Gallery followed by a visit to the Hirshorn Museum. After this the students were free to explore other Washington land- marks. Many of the students visited the world famous Smithsonian Insti- tute, while others visited the Wash- ington Monument, the Lincoln Mem- orial, the Jefferson Memorial and the Capitol Building. Although the day was filled with much excitement and adventure, the great- est thrill of the trip occurred at the end of the day. The tired eyes and ex- hausted feet of the seniors were awakened by a radical demonstration protesting the arrival of the Shah of Iran. The trip was organized and directed by Reverand Peter Sullivan and Reverand Andrew Martin. Moon Shadow After many weeks of preparation the big day, November 12th, fin- nally came. Early Saturday morn- ing each class level decorated floats to be judged at the game. Following was a parade to the football field with all the floats, the band, the cheerleaders, and the Homecoming Court riding on the senior float. As the fall season descended, senior students began planning for the 1977 Homecoming Game and Dance. Under the supervi- sion of their Senior Class Moder- ator, Miss Diane Pauciello, they organized a Homecoming com- mitee, consisting of Senior Homeroon Teachers and Stud- ents. The commitee also chose “Mainline as the group to pro- vide music and entertainment. The Gloucester Catholic Rams played an exciting game against Glassboro. The highlight of the game was at halftime, when the Homecoming Queen was announ- ced. Gloucester Catholic also took part in this activity. Members of the Student Council and National Honor Society as well as parents volunteered their time to sit with the stand and answer any questions. Among the items presented to on-lookers were many original creative pieces of art and literature submitted by the stu- dents, as well as many pictures depict- ing the school activities. Also dis- played were past issues of Aries the school yearbook. Rampage, the 1977- 1978 Student Handbook various news letters, and course selection sheets all gave insight to the academic and spirit- ual education provided at Gloucester Catholic High School. Innovative Physical Ed Program An innovative dimension to Gloucester Catholic's phys- ical education program was the institution of coeduca- tional gym. When Mrs. Ber- tha Nolan was confronted with the question of why the transformation from separate gym classes to mixed ones had taken place, she commented, “When the evaluators came to the school they asked me why I had only girls names in my roll book, and they reminded me that we are required by the state to switch to co-ed gym.’’ Through Title IX of the State of New Jersey, all schools seeking state finan- cial assistance are required to provide equal services for all students. In com- pliance with this ordinance, Gloucester Catholic decid- ed to integrate the gym classes for the 1977-78 school year. The new program, featuring a variety of activities, was introduced by gym modera- tors Mrs. Nolan and Mr. Daniel O’Brien this Septem- ber. At the onset, a gener- ally controlled and regulat- ed situation had been insti- tuted. Various rules and techniques, once master- ed, were applied in games among the squads. Soccer, hockey and volleyball were among those activities treated in this fashion. Team sports encouraged competitiveness which led Freshmen listen intently for instructions - Jt 114 Provides Balance At G.C.H.S. to increased proficiency and development of team spirit. Volleyball, among all the sports, seemed to ex- emplify the goals of group athletics. The play-off and championship rounds gen- erated more enthusiasm than had been thought pos- sible in a gym class. This year more than ever before, there has been a greater opportunity to de- velop skills and attitudes that may be utilized in phy- sical activity long after one leaves school. Besides the controlled situation, there was also a more relaxed at- mosphere where students picked from a variety of ac- tivities including basketball, tumbling, gymnastics, ten- nis and weightlifting. This provided a balanced pro- gram of individual and team sports. In this way, stu- dents had the chance to ex- perience the thrills of coop- erative team effort, and gain an appreciation of strategy of team play so that they may become more intelligent spectators when they are no longer able to participate. In addition, the social as- pects of co-ed gym should be recognized along with the physical benefits de- rived from participation. As Mr. O’Brien sees it, “Co-ed gym allows the students to become comfortable in par- ticipating in activities. 115 athletic Spirit Sparks Ram Cheerleaders For many years, Gloucester Catholic has been known for its great school spirit. The Sixth Ram has often meant the difference between winning and losing. The people re- sponsible for keeping both the Rams on the playing field and the “Sixth Ram in the stands psyched up are our Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders. Contrary to popular opinion, this is often a difficult job. Most people only see these girls when they are cheering at games. From this angle cheerleading seems very glamorous. Very few people realize the time and effort which these girls put in. They spend many hours each day after school practicing their var- ious cheers and movements. The cheer- leaders are often taken for granted and are rarely given the credit which they truly de- serve. Their dedication, energy and ability encourage all Gloucester Catholic teams to strive for success and victory. Kneeling: B. Englehart. M. Sebastian Sitting: K. Killian. J. Kerrigan. L. Soccer was made the latest addition to the sports calendar. Coach Tony Lotierzo, a former Philadelphia Atoms player, recruited thirty boys to form the Original Gloucester Catholic High School Soccer team. Starting with registration in September, the boys had long hard workouts at the Gloucester City Coast Guard Station each afternoon until November. The drills included extensive calisthenics even on the coldest days. The season will not be remembered for its record, but for the dedication of the coach, players and managers who made the first year a very worthwhile one. Neither Rain Nor Snow . . . She has the finesse and grace of any professional tennis player. Michelle has undoubtedly reached the height of her ability this season by winning 14 of the 17 games she played for Gloucester Catholic. The hard efforts of the rest of the team also aided in the Rams' successes. Our third singles was played on and off by two very colorful players. This year's rolling rams showed that competition can be fun. The team’s friendly sportsmanship won them many friends on op- posing teams. But, it was the uni- que bowling style of key players that won them several matches. Gloucester Catholic's bowling team highlighted the abilities of some veteran seniors and the po- tential of an impressive cast of newcomers. It is no suprise that members of the team are opti- misticly looking toward future seasons. The one problem faced by the bowlers is a lack of school recog- nition. However, a part of the spotlight isn't what G.C.’s bow- lers want, all they ask for is a lane, a ball, and some friendly competition. To the students who ask for these things, we can say, Bowl on.
