ECUMENICAL COUNCIL . . . many minds in noble accord . . . We the graduates of 1964 are the witnesses of the birth of a new spirit within the Church—the ecumenical spirit. We shall also be the recipients of its benefits. The precedent-shattering trip of Pope Paul VI to the holy land typifies the new outlook. The proceedings of the Second Vatican Council animate this new hope and its decrees confirm the yearning of the world. No longer shall the Catholic layman be a mere onlooker, but rather a partici- pant in the activities of the Church. He will not only be a hearer of the word but a doer also, to the extent that he will speak, understand, and accomplish with a new significance, the problems set forth by the modern world. It is for us, the graduates of 1964, the laymen of the next decade, to see to the fulfillment and spread of the cause of unity that is the expressed hope of our Sovereign Pontiff. It is also to these ends and to his Holiness, Pope Paul VI, that we dedicate the pages of our yearbook.

It must be acquired and developed through special care and attention. Gloucester Catholic affords an excellent opportunity to obtain and bring to full maturity this nobility which distinguishes us as true citizens of Christ’s KINGDOM.

HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST REVEREND CELESTINE J. DAMIANO, D.D. Archbishop-Bishop of Camden Let us stop to pay tribute to our beloved Archbishop Celestine J. Damiano. At a time when heavy burdens and responsibilities have been placed on bishops, we have been blessed with one of the most capable and energetic of the hierarchy. The list of services rendered by His Excellency is impressive and diversified. His educational drive helped to strengthen Catholic education. He has made the sacraments more readily available to many of our people with the institution of new parishes. He has en- couraged lay participation in the liturgy. In short, he has helped to create a revitalized spirit of progress in our Diocese. In addition to these services, he has fully participated in the Ecumenical Council and has given energy to the missions. Our Archbishop-Bishop well befits his role as another Christ. . . . nothing so sacred as honor . . . 6
