IMAGE OF NOBILITY 7V A RYA N presented by the senior class of GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL GLOUCESTER NEW JERSEY departments 14 classes 32 activities 46 sports 56 seniors 70 Christ the King demands of us, in nobility of mind, a nobility of purpose, a nobility of spirit. But nobility is not inborn. It must be acquired and developed through special care and attention. Gloucester Catholic affords an excellent opportunity to obtain and bring to full maturity this nobility which distinguishes us as true citizens of Christ’s KINGDOM. ECUMENICAL COUNCIL . . . many minds in noble accord . . . We the graduates of 1964 are the witnesses of the birth of a new spirit within the Church—the ecumenical spirit. We shall also be the recipients of its benefits. The precedent-shattering trip of Pope Paul VI to the holy land typifies the new outlook. The proceedings of the Second Vatican Council animate this new hope and its decrees confirm the yearning of the world. No longer shall the Catholic layman be a mere onlooker, but rather a partici- pant in the activities of the Church. He will not only be a hearer of the word but a doer also, to the extent that he will speak, understand, and accomplish with a new significance, the problems set forth by the modern world. It is for us, the graduates of 1964, the laymen of the next decade, to see to the fulfillment and spread of the cause of unity that is the expressed hope of our Sovereign Pontiff. It is also to these ends and to his Holiness, Pope Paul VI, that we dedicate the pages of our yearbook. HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST REVEREND CELESTINE J. DAMIANO, D.D. Archbishop-Bishop of Camden Let us stop to pay tribute to our beloved Archbishop Celestine J. Damiano. At a time when heavy burdens and responsibilities have been placed on bishops, we have been blessed with one of the most capable and energetic of the hierarchy. The list of services rendered by His Excellency is impressive and diversified. His educational drive helped to strengthen Catholic education. He has made the sacraments more readily available to many of our people with the institution of new parishes. He has en- couraged lay participation in the liturgy. In short, he has helped to create a revitalized spirit of progress in our Diocese. In addition to these services, he has fully participated in the Ecumenical Council and has given energy to the missions. Our Archbishop-Bishop well befits his role as another Christ. . . . nothing so sacred as honor . . . 6 We are fortunate in having such a capable priest as Msgr. McGarry to guide the vast complex of the Camden Diocese school system. In today’s world, where more and greater emphasis is being placed upon the training of responsible young Catholic laymen. Monsignor has cer- tainly taken the lead in fostering this end. We at Glou- cester Catholic can be justly proud and appreciative of the work he has accomplished. We pray to Christ the King, the patron of the Diocesan Educational Fund and of the 1964 annual, that Msgr. McGarry will continue ably to press the educational needs of the Camden Diocese. REV. WILLIAM G. MARK Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools RT. REV. MSGR. CHARLES P. McGARRY Diocesan Superintendent of Schools RT. REV. MSGR. EDWARD B. LUCITT Just as any group needs and responds to the authority of a leader, so we, the student body of Gloucester Catholic High School, look to our principal, Sister Mary Carmel. Indeed we are indebted to her for the guidance she has offered us. Through her efforts, the students have be- come a unified body, striving cooperatively for satisfactory spiritual and educational goals. Her ever-present sense of humor combined with a genuine interest in the welfare of the students and of our school commands our heartfelt admiration and appreciation. May Christ the King ever reign in her heart! . . . so loyal as love . . Ever since Msgr. Lucitt took over as pastor of St. Mary’s and administrator of Gloucester Catholic High School, he has worked untiringly for the benefit of the stu- dents at his high school. He has instilled in us a new spirit and drive to make us better fulfill our potentialities. His deep interest in the needs of every student at Gloucester Catholic has given him more than the usual relationship with his students. In our minds, Monsignor will always stand out as a leader of leaders, a priest among men, and especially a friend of friends. Monsignor, we the Class of 1964, salute you! SISTER MARY CARMEL, O.P. This zeal for knowledge, so aptly expressed in the words of St. Thomas Aquinas, has always been well represented by the students of Gloucester Catholic. In all classes from English to mathematics, this desire is essential to intellectual growth and understanding. In the light of these facts, the academic curriculum of Gloucester Catholic has always been stressed. No matter how im- portant the extra-curricula activities may seem, the formal education courses remain uppermost in the minds of the students. The young people who have followed this idea graduate well-rounded adults who are capable of accepting the challenges of daily life. RELIGION Thomas Cannon, sophomore, reads from text- book: The grand theme of living our faith . . . the prayer of the heart carried into a prayerful life by the observance of the Commandments.” Father Beebe, instructor. Any. thorough Christian Apologetics course en- tails the study of the Bible, the inspired word of God. Here senior girls, under the observant eye of Father Barnett, read a passage from Scripture. Father Burns instructs the freshmen boys to a deeper knowledge and understanding of the events of the public life of Christ. Father Giglio has developed the concept of the Church as the Kingdom of God on earth and as the Mystical Body of Christ through the knowledge of the sacraments which has enriched the lives of these sophomores. Psychology, a new phase of our curriculum, according to St. Thomas, the Angelic Doctor, is a study of the whole man as a creature of matter and spirit. Father Hart, instructor. 17 Sophomore students enact the interview which proved Eppie’s unswerving loyalty to Silas Marner. Ann Marie Combs played the role of Silas; Anne Rodgers that of Eppie; Barbara Grabbe impersonated Godfrey Cass; and Mary Vandergrift represented his wife, Nancy. The essence of good writing is the creative thinking which the writer puts into it—the approach and the imagination which you bring to the work. Thomas Carr, freshman, at board. . . . nobility of the beauty of the written and spoken word . . . James Hogan reads an essay he has written as a project in senior English. Mr. Goldschmidt, instructor. Ethel Miller relates the history of the Elizabethan Age, a necessary background for the understanding of Shakes- pear’s classic tragedy, Macbeth. 19 ENGLISH Algebra II students recognize the fact that fractional equations serve as an excel- lent background for the solution of many and varied word problems. Margaret Barry and Marilyn McDonald at board, Sister Marie Denise, instructor. George Batavick and Michael Morriseey demonstrate that analytical or coordinate geometry may be mastered by the high school student. 20 Mr. Halphen, instructor, firmly believes that constant repetition is a necessary procedure in the teaching of al- gebra. At board, James Murphy and Robert Heverly. MATHEMATICS nobility of discipline of mind . . . James Barrett, senior, discusses the use of the law of tangents in the solution of trig problems. 21 Home Economics girls believe in the adage, Happy the home where there is a full cookie jar.” Baking cookies is an art in itself, the variety being endless, because the possibilities are so great. The study of chemistry is made more clear and meaningful when scientific theory is applied in lab experiments. Physics students supplement their class- room work in the laboratory. A group of young scientists experiment with cathode rays. SCIENCE General Science freshmen students study the law of conservation of matter: No weight is either gained or lost in a chemical action. Mr. DiPatri, instructor. Inquisitive sophomores begin to discover the mysteries of the microscopic world.” SOCIAL SCIENCE . . . nobility of the faithful and 24 Sophomore civics students are provided with excellent means for reliable information and sound ideas which will help them to gain an understanding of their social environ- ment. Father O’Connor, instructor. Junior students seem quite absorbed in their study of the rise of the American nation from the Colonial period to and including the nation as a world leader. A Tribute to Daddy A little boy, hi« father's pride, What must he think when his father died? Is he too young to realize Exactly why a nation cries? We cry because we mourn his Dad— Our president.—It's all too sad To think of what the world has lost And just how much our freedom costs. Some say his song was just half sung— His world peace policy much too young Fully to survive the bitter strife That angered one to take his life. Now his death can't let us cease To work to gain his wish for peace. But—this mighty man lies SLAIN! How can we help but feel deep pain? We must accept this as God’s Will, Be brave, and face the future.—Still We vividly see that day in November As a small son’s tribute we'll long remember. loyal citizens . . . One week before his tragic death, President Kennedy staged a surprise visit to the annual National Catholic Youth Organization convention. Throughout his presi- dential administration, Mr. Kennedy expressed his interest and love for us—the country’s youth. Gerald Burke, Maureen O’Neill, Claire Rauscher, and John Kavaliunas pause to admire the draped portrait of our late President John F. Kennedy. When word was received that President Kennedy had been assassinated, the students were at a football rally. Immediately the atmosphere changed into one of silence and sadness, and the students ’at the request of Msgr. Lucitt and Sister Mary Carmel, led by Father Beebe, recited the Rosary for the repose of his soul. LANGUAGES Father O’Toole, Latin instructor, stresses the fact that pronunciation of Latin is determined by the sound of letters, such as vowels, dipthongs, consonants, and by the number and length of syllables in a word. 26 Robert Braunwarth shows the boys how to break pinata,” as part of the work in a project in Spanish I. An important facet in studying a language is a knowledge of the historical and cultural back- ground of the country. The French III students extend this knowledge as John Austin describes a French cathedral and Dolores Adams assists him in pointing to the details of the masterpiece. Father Perrelli emphasizes to his German II class that today there is a conscious effort being made to avoid textbook German and to use throughout, the language that is actually spoken and read by educated Germans. 27 These bookkeepers in the making are in the process of analyzing the relationship of the purchase journal and the accounts payable ledger, under the supervision of Mr. Gallagher. Shorthand comes easy to these juniors who strive to be expert readers. Accuracy and speed set the pace for these typists who are under the supervision of Mrs. Simpkins. BUSINESS Senior girls busy themselves in preparation for the many and varied tasks of the private secretary. 29 Music, under the direction of Sister Helen Ro- berta, as that form of educational training de- signed to cultivate in the student the fact of the existence of the art of listening, has alerted the students to a keener appreciation of the works of the famous composers. Our senior boys appreciate the fact that people who grow up and work in twentieth-century Amer- ica find life better and their careers easier because of their knowledge of engineering drawing. ■ Art students are happily engaged in making table decorations— no doubt a Christmas project. ART AND MUSIC PHYSICAL EDUCATION Push-up exercises—boys routine drill enables them to keep physically fit. . . . sound of body, sound of mind . . . Physical education has long been recognized as a necessary component in a program of education. 31 CLASSES Remembering the trials and the joys of our four years at Gloucester Catholic, we wish to set aside a section of this yearbook to you, the underclasses. Realizing the difficult times ahead of you, we encourage you to labor diligently and to pray earnestly in all you undertake. We thank you, one and all, for every- thing you have done to make our senior year so full and rewarding. Face your future with hope and optimism so that your own senior year will reflect the spirit of conscientious de- votion and diligence to Gloucester Catholic. The religious and educational or- ganizations aid the student in realizing his religious responsibilities, in stimulating his mind, and in broadening his scholastic hori- zons. Specialized activities provide instruction in manual skills, art and music which should prove invaluable in the individual’s future. A school’s activities reflect its student body’s unity and spirit. These activities ex- emplify the vigorous spirit and cooperation of Gloucester Catholic students. The indi- vidual who participates in activities develops physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually, thus preparing himself for his life’s work. so . . . nothing royal as truth . . . At the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass cele- brated in the school chapel the students co-offer the Body and Blood of Christ to God the Father. Father Fitzgerald, cele- brant. The purpose of Catholic education is to develop the student spiritually as well as academically and physically. This spir- itual advancement is manifested by the members of the Knights of Gloucester Catholic, an organization devoted to the promotion of participation in the spiritual activities of school life. Father Hart, moderator. Character, scholarship, leadership, and service are the four cardinal qualities for membership in the Maria Chapter of the National Honor Society. Rev. Desmond Matthews, S.J., girls’ retreat master, takes time out to pose with seniors, Barbara Mosteig and Jo Ann DiGiacomo. What is the purpose of life?” asked Father Matthews at his opening conference of the re- treat. We found some of the answers to the ques- tion during the three days of the retreat, days set aside by our administrators to give us a more and better appreciation of God, the Creator of life. We had plenty of time for prayer and self- examination. We trust and pray that we shall reap many blessings as a result of this retreat. RETREAT Rev. Raymond Cosgrove, S.J., retreat master for the boys, celebrates the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on the closing day of the retreat. The stu- dent body took advantage of the splendid opportunity to receive Holy Communion. 49 MARY SCRIPT John Kavaliunas, editor-in-chief, and Pamela Payne, news editor, are deeply interested in the selection of captions for the ensuing issue of the MARYSCRIPT. Girls’ Pep Club The Girls’ Pep Club puts the real Glou- cester Catholic spirit into all activities, you name it, and they are on the job. 55 SPORTS During the past year the rising spirit of Christian ecumenism has had a marked effect on all activities at Gloucester Catholic. This is especially true of the athletic program where unity became the keynote to success. Indeed team play indicates the friend- ship and cooperation—whether it be on the football gridiron, the basketball court, on the baseball field, from the ranks of the cheer- leaders, or among the members of the Drum 6C Bugle Corps. The willingness to sacrifice individual stardom in order to promote the welfare of the team is indicative of the virtues of humility and modesty which will remain with the athlete throughout his life. Let us hope and pray that this spirit of unity will always prevail at Gloucester Catholic. Congratulations for an outstanding season! 2 ■ The final thrill of the victory was manifested by John Murphy as he expressed to his radio audience his elation and the joy of the entire team at winning the Class B State championship. Bill Somerset, Bud Shodder, and Jack Fink await their turn. k o o 2 c oc lii o s D D GO 0 u e z G u o O 2 “O “O U c: 03 cn c T3 C 3 O -O 03 d - c LO - — LO o o r - sz CO o o 03 -O _03 — Q. Mike Baker, Bill Somerset, and Bud Shodder look on with brotherly pride and expectation at a grand finale to a tremendous season. “Tremendous team play that never depended on an individual star.' ATLANTIC CITY PRESS 2 21 64 During the assembly honoring the Golden Rams, co- captains John Murphy and Jack Fink present the championship game ball to our overwhelmingly delighted Monsignor Lucitt. Monsignor described winning the State championship as a thrill that comes once in a lifetime and wished the boys on the team continued success in every endeavor they undertake in the future. “Torrid Shooting . . . Hustling Offense.” PERTH AM80Y NEWS 3 14 64 “Fantastic marksmanship (77%), devastating fast break, five man rebounding assault, heads up ball hawking.” “A Dream Team” CATHOLIC STAR HERALD 3 15 64 On Gloucester Catholic Day, which was pro- claimed by Mayor Ber- nard Gurick, Monsignor Lucitt, Father Hart, and the mayor himself show visible signs of joy as they ride through the streets of Gloucester in the parade which culmi- nated the day’s activities. A credit to Gloucester Catholic, Mr. Ford has had many honors be- stowed upon him, but always he has remained humble. Ably assisted by Mr. Tally, he is forever thinking of the welfare of his boys, putting their well being before his own. A man of integrity, Mr. Ford can truly be called the finest coach a boy could ever have. VINELAND TIMES JOURNAL 3 2 64 . . . the nobility of determination . . . The big number 25” belongs to Bill Somerset a big boy and a valuable asset to the Golden Rams. Bill excelled in rebounding and shooting, and also proved to be a tough man to hold down. Waiting to cover the shot is number 5,” Mike Baker, another big factor in the Ram success story. It is impossible to have a winning basketball team without gaining the respect of your opponents under their own hoops. Bud Shodder and Bill Somerset, two of Gloucester Catholic whiz kids, gained this respect as they consistently cleared the boards in both offensive and defensive efforts. CHEERLEADERS Additional effort on the part of the players is realized through the un- dying spirit of our cheerleaders. That the Rams are on the scoring march is evident in the faces of these senior members of the cheering squad. Maryan Gleason, Veronica Pirrotta, Nancy Cattell, Claire Rauscher, Pa- tricia Beck, Maureen O’Neill. As the excitement mounts during a football game, our loyal cheerleaders give added spirit to the crowd as they lead the onlookers in resounding cheers. At the helm of our ship of spirit are the two senior co-captains, Nan Lynch and Shirley Hampton. Our vivacious cheerleaders provide that extra sparkle to ignite the team on to victory. Coach Murphy instructs William Lindoerfer, Robert Leo, and Russell Schaeffer regarding tips on discus hurling. SENIORS When we began our first year at Gloucester Catholic, we were isolated individuals wait- ing to be united. Four years later we have come together to form a unit—the Class of 1964. At Gloucester Catholic this ecumenical movement spread farther than the forming of classes. We have been taught that we are all one in Christ, with the same ultimate goal— Heaven. Now as we leave these hallowed halls may we retain all the teachings of our inspir- ing high school years. May we practice the virtues of faith, hope, and charity, and possess forever the spirit of true Christianity. SENIOR ACTIVITIES Mary Cullen crowns Janice McIntyre as Homecoming Queen; attendants: Joan Wehrle, Nancy Cattell, Veronica Pirrotta, and Rosemary Kneble. Joan Wehrle, our charming Prom queen. 72 John Fink and Nancy Cattell, William Somerset and Nan Lynch, lead the grand march, the highlight of the evening. Kathleen Schwegel and David Heim take time out to chat about the pleasant evening at the Prom. Our ever faithful and tireless chaperones take pride in the artistically decorated gym, the handiwork of their own children, which transformed the gym into an oriental garden. 73 The boys always look forward to guidance given them by Father Hart. Harry Vizzard and John Kulesa take their turns. Very Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Callahan, Diocesan director of vocations, is talking to the senior boys on vocations to the priesthood. Rev. John J. Clark, principal of Camden Catholic, is guest speaker at the rally, sponsored by the seniors, prior to the city series game. As anticipated, the Rams scored the victory. The faculty and student body were honored to have Arch- bishop Damiano visit the school. The student body assem- bled in the gym to hear his inspiring and instructive talk, urging the students to ever keep in mind their privilege of being members of the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. 74 the nobility of participation 75 SENIOR OFFICERS BARBARA REGINA MOSTEIG Secretary DOLORES ELIZABETH ADAMS 1501 Oak Avenue, Haddon Heights Parish: St. Rose of Lima Dee” . . . stylish dresser . . . IN MEMORIAM TO OUR FRIEND and CLASSMATE BRIAN KEARNEY October 18, 1946 to October 12, 1961 May He Rest in Peace 98 As we, the Class of 1964, approach the culmina- tion of our high school education, we look to Christ the King for guidance in our chosen vocations. In leaving our beloved Gloucester Catholic we possess a keen desire to express our humble and sincere grati- tude to all who have aided our education. Our first thoughts are of our parents who have given so much of themselves to insure a Catholic education for us. We think, too, of our Bishop, the Most Reverend Celestine J. Damiano, who has done so much for secondary school education throughout our diocese. We shall always reserve a special place in our hearts for our pastor, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Edward B. Lucitt, who has been most generous in providing all that is neces- sary for our well-rounded education—spiritual, intel- lectual, and social. We marvel at Sister Mary Carmel’s patience, and are most grateful for her sincerity and kindness. Our religious faculty has instilled in us the Christian ideals which we hope will remain with each one of us for the rest of our lives. The lay faculty has provided a wonder- ful example for those of us who will have vocations in the secular life. Many clubs and organizations have given freely to the success of the past four years. Our hearts are full of gratitude for all who have worked with us and for us and without whom we may never have gone this far in Cath- olic training. May Christ the King watch over all who have assisted us, and over each and every member of our class, to strengthen us in our faith and to draw us closer and closer to Him as we proceed along the path of life, so that we may reign with Him forever in Heaven. 99 BENEFA CTORS HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST REVEREND CELESTINE J.
