Appropriate to our theme of the living God is our staff counselor. Her smile for everyone, her genuine warmth and love, her enthusiasm truly reveal that her life is Spirit-guided. With sincere appreciation for her guidance and example we dedicate the 1964 TI-IUNDERBIRD to Mrs. Erle Dickson. The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. HERRON are originally from New Mexico It was not until Dr. Herron was 33 years old that he felt God wanted his vocation to be full- time church-related. After training he went to Alabama as state secretary of the Sunday School work. I-Ie remained in this position until 1954 when he was asked to become manager of the newly-founded Glorieta Baptist Assemble. For ten years now his guidance, his spirit, his interest have led the assembly in its phenomenal development. Words of advice from the heart of this man of God have long been treasured by all Glorieta staffers. God's Blessings on You You are a choice group of young people and adults. We thank you again for your gracious spirit and for all you have done in making the assembly a blessing to our guests . Our love, interest and prayers go with you. We hope you will return to Glorieta often in the years aheadu. God's blessings on each of your dear staffers. E. A. Herron MR. After retirement the Gardners came to Glorieta to be- come part of the year-round staff at the assembly. PERMANENT STAFF MR. AND MRS. OTIS GOODNER, act as caretakers for the assembly grounds. They live just inside the gate in a lovely home. Mrs. Goodner arranges flowers and works in the greenhouse to add much to the beauty of Glorieta by using plants of many kinds. The Goodners have been part of the Glorieta staff since june 1950. MR. DOYLE MORRIS, the office manager at Glorieta, is a native of the state of Oklahoma. Before coming to Glorieta four years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Morris, Michelle and Kevin, made their home in Artesia, New Mexico. From a background of various jobs Mr. Morris became a part of Glorieta's permanent staff and finds unique satisfaction in his work as he feels he is within the will of God for his life. ,Af new af Q E 5211? iiilw ww , 4' if 'T argue! That's the night that the I-Ierron Staffers produced the colorful Tal- ent Show in Holcomb Auditorium. The boistrous crowd echoed the success of each participant as he concluded his performance. Many interpretations of entertainment included Dan Bishop's ridiculous idea of the game of football. The Letters , a humorous reading, was done by Peggy Randall. joe Love, Marcia Hearn, and Lauren Holcomb enlightened the audience with Music and Laughter . A three-part skit of married life was vividly portrayed through the actions of Roberta Tamble and Richard Thomas. In addition, Jackie Hipp and his friend were the center of a riotous ventriloquist act. Cynthia McConathy articulately enounced the reading Sounds With Sense. A medley of song was presented by Carole Monroe, who was followed by Carlos Rodriguez' misty interpretation of Celito Lindo. Harris Coe delivered an original oration about His Family . In addition to all this, Clyde Ross played a beautiful arrangement of Last Date . As a grand conclusion to a wonderful evening, Claudia Stoker gave an impressive, dramatic reading of MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY. june 17. . . The staff left New Mexico Hall in files of two. This enthusiastic group of three hundred was all smiles and laughter. Nothing could be as ex- citing as an hour hike through bushes and shrubs, and an informal cook- out in the valley beyond. Penny Sudberry, Saundra Luns- dum, Barbara Morgan, Elaine McKay, Charlotte Sutherland, and Marilyn Hatcher were responsible for the weiners and fixings that were enjoyed by everyone. Providing light en- tertainment, Marica Hearn, Clyde Ross, Lynn Simmons, and joe Jaime sang. Ken Barousse, guitar, and Tim Arwood, violin, were the able accompanists. As the evening drew nigh, Mrs. Dickson led the staffers in a highly inspirational devotional that centered around a brilliantly illuminated cross, high atop the peak of Lookout Mountain. A true spirit of a very real and living God reigned in the hearts and minds of all those privileged to attend. 74 J jackie Hipp and friend Jerry ACTIVITIES Spirit of the living God was emphasized by many activities of the staffers throughout the summer. Introducing this exciting phase of Glorieta was a colorful talent show in Holcomb Auditorium. Next the staffers donned their sweat shirts, blue jeans, and sturdy hiking shoes as they prepared for a western cookout. Still another week brought the coming of the powder-puff football game-this change of events was certainly a highlight in the minds of all, whether they were spectators or participants. The first six week's activities ended with a hootenanny and an exciting trip to the Santa Fe Rodeo. The last half of the assembly's activities began with an inspiring presentation of the play, Five Small Windows of Christmas , directed by Le lla Snider. The following week proved to be just as enjoyable as the Shakespearean staffers of Glorieta presented their hilarious version of Oklahamlet . Then came the Christmas in july party when the staff entertained wide-eyed, excited children of the Santa Fe Baptist Indian Mission. The Mexican touch was taken into Santa Fe for a delicious supper at La Cocina. One of the last parties enjoyed by staffers was the barbeque cookout held in the field below New Mexico Hall. The old Glorieta Chuck Wagon and western style clothes set the atmosphere for this event. As the staffers participated in these and other activities, they were always conscious of the presence of God in the midst of them. The staffers were in a true spirit of the living God as they listened in- tently to Mrs. Dickson's closing devotional. 75 POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL GAME One for the money, two for the--?? June 24. . . Surrounded by cheering fans the monstrous players approached their positions for the KICK-OFF of the annual Powder-Puff football game at six o'clock. The din became almost unbearable as the dainty cheerleaders led the rooters in precisioned yells. The coaches' fingernails became shorter and shorter as the folly progressed. ln an ecstasy of rage the refined yellsters displayed hostility among themselves, bringing everyone to the edge of their rocky ledges. Anticipation could be seen in the eyes of the crowd as the crowning of the new Powder-Puff Queen approached. The judges' decision was made even more difficult because the four finalists were undoubtedly the elite of the campus due to their poise and beauty. Patience wore thin, exhaustion prevailed and each player, coach, cheerleader, and fan knew beyond any doubt that they had shared in high-lighting the first six weeks at Glorieta. The Southern Belle Saddlers from Colorado, fbetter known to the staff as the Side Saddle Sallys j the Santa Fe Posse, and the famous Flying Cimmarrons exhibited their riding skill after the announcer introduced the rodeo royalty and dignitaries. The excellent display of stock and skill caused excitement and enjoyment to ride high for all thestaffers. A patriotic salute to the colors and the Rodeo de Santa Fe moved into high gear before the intent eyes of staffers who attended. OKLAHAMLET Laughter and hilarity prevailed as a great Dane went to the dogs in Oklahamlet . mike july 22. . .Merry Peals of laughter echoed through New Mexico Hall as staffers enjoyed riotous renditions of two skits. First Iere Travathan and Milton Bates delighted their audience with an emergency operation on Sandy Webb. The expert surgeons were amazed to discover popcorn in the patient as the result of long hours in the chuck wagon. At the climax of the surgery the doctors presented an eighty-five-pound gall stone to Dr. Herron. Next a group of staffeggpresented a rollickingamusical take-off on HAMLET. The Ghost, portrayed by jim leSwaluaqnMd,1ga appeared td Dan Bishop as-!Qk-l-aharnvlei telling him that King Claudius, played by Alan Morris, had killed the former king. Meanwhile Cecil Dead- man, as Laertes, rushed to Oklahamlet and proposed a duel to avenge the death of his sister Ophelia and his father Polonius, portrayed by John Ashley. Shakespeare, alias Le Ila Snider, discovering that he had made the plot far too complicated for comprehension, decided to take the chicken's way out, so everyone died a bloody, bloody death. Oklahamlet was borne away by two captains, Danny Tracy and john Tatum, while his mother Gertrude, played by johnny Carr, dies after gulping down a poison Pepsi. i SKIT NIGHT A military tone was added to Skit Night as Cecil the Seasick Super- visor related his misadventures in uniform. 79 BIBLE STUDY Monday afternoons found staffers engaged in Bible Study. Outstanding Baptist leaders led challenging learning experiences from God's Word. Here Dr. jess Moody teaches as staffers listen attentively. The short climb up a picturesque trail brings die adventure seeker to a breath-taking view of all Glorieta. Many are the times that aheart-warming prayer meeting on the crest of Look-Out have brought a spiritual blessing. We will not forget how real the spirit of our God was to us upon that mountain. STAFF GIFT In appreciation of the many blessings which Glorieta has brought to their lives, the mem- bers of the 1964 staff felt a desire to say thank you in some small way. Finding that the assembly needed a water cooler for the front walk of New Mexico Hall, the staffers contributed sufficient funds to purchase such a cooler. Late in the summer months the cooler was installed with an appropriate plaque. The appreciative use of the fountain by staff and guests alike amply repaid the donors for their efforts. 81 HN! HHN!!
