Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1971 volume:

Friends are for giving and also for sharing Friends are for helping, needing and caring Friends are for secrets, friends are for fun For starting things out and for getting things done Friends are for listening -for knowing what’s right Friends are for making a cloudy day bright 4 These old familiar halls. To a stranger they look no different from the hallways of any other building. But to us who study and play out the drama of our high school years here their physical features have become distorted in our minds by the events that have taken place within them. Empty-lonely-they serve only as a reminder of what has been and a promise of what will he. 5 %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% What can we say ? You have helped so many of us in so many ways sometimes seen, hut so very often unseen. These contributions have exceeded the boundaries of any one class. You have a very rare gift: capable of being a friend to the students without ever sacrificing your dignity and respect. This tribute is long overdue. With deep appreciation, we dedicate the 1971 to Miss Tigner. 6 THANK YOU Miss Tigner in action. Special Recognition We. the Publications Staff, wish to thank you for the advice and help you have given us in making the Glen-Echo a good newspaper. We have gained much from this experience and from you. We are sorry to see you leave your position as advisor. Thank you for all you have done. Mr. William Clark Mr. Ron Jackson Mr. Charles Chapin Mr. Robert Lowery Mr. Max Summers Mr. William Leinberger Dr. Robert Bowen 8 Board Of Education Represents Community Congratulations to a truly outstanding graduating class. Our purpose has been to light lights in you that you didn 7 know existed -lights that will help you find your way to a richer, fuller life. To do this you must meet the world at first hand, experience it yourself, know it as it is. You have already benefited from twelve years of classroom study and a great majority of you will continue your formal education. Superintendent Supervises District You ’ll be given the freedom to explore your own interests, and you won 7 be told how to apply your experiences. At your age you ’re at the crossroads of your life. Now we leave these halls as gawky, uncertain high school graduates to take our places in the strife-ridden world. These past four years have filled our minds with knowledge necessary to achieve success and satisfaction. We hear constantly that the earth is doomed, that the future is hopeless hut the future is OURS the world is ours. We alone have the power to help destroy or to create. A large addition to the building had been made the summer before we entered Glenwood as freshmen. We thus felt less conspicuous in our awkwardness, since the upperclassmen were almost as unfamiliar with the new floorplan as we were. The building soon became familiar. however; and we fell easily into our roles as high school students. Vickie Altizer and Randy Medd were freshman attendants at the 6 7 homecoming, Rhapsody in Blue. Many of us participated in GLENWOOD SALUTES ILLINOIS a historical production honoring Illinois' Sequisentennial and written by our own Miss Tigner. The year came quickly to an end and we were promoted to the rank of sophomore. The national election campaigns were in full swing as we returned to school. In a mock election Glenwood went along with the rest of the nation in electing Richard Nixon the 37th President of the United States. Immediately after that. Glenwood presented its first Broadway musical, OKLAHOMA!. Our attendants for “Revolution the homecoming dance were Vickie Altizer and Gary McCarrel. We started our junior year with the usual push for money with which to finance our Prom. Lyn Hearn and Clary McCarrel were co-chairmen of this immense project. The fall brought the arrival of our first year in varsity basketball and the musical, THE KING AND I. ”Dawn of Creation, ” the ’69 homecoming dance was held in mid-December. The junior attendants were Judy Cook, Ten Campbell, Cheryl Doan, and Gary McCarrel. The start of the new year was also the start of the new decade. Prom preparations continued at an ever-increasing pace. The usual rush of end-of-the-year activities was augmented by the Jr.-Sr. play. UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE. On the morning of May 16th, 1970, most of us appeared at the Teamsters’ Union Hall to begin the final stretch of work for Prom painting murals, stretching crepe paper, cooking, and setting up the sound system. That evening we were rewarded for our efforts. Waiting for the Sun” was all we had hoped it would be. We were most happy to have hadSerra Leigh, a well-known band from St. Louis, provide music for the evening. Our Senior year brought the advent of some new rules at Glenwood. For the first time girls were allowed to wear slacks, and boys were permitted to have mustaches. By the end of the year, two candy machines appeared in the cafeteria for the students’ use. There were changes in rules outside Glenwood, also: 18year olds were granted the right to vote in national elections. Dave Freeman Sharon Freeman Kevin Frey Gail Fox Teresa Gillenwaters mi Beverly L. Ford Jessica Gilreath Julie Glatfelter Susan Kathleen Grigsby Lilou Obrier, our A FS student from France, has been a tremendous addition to our senior class and the school as a whole. We hope that our “Frenchic has also profited from this past year among us. MY FAIR LADY was our last musical. In December, Homecoming Week was highlighted by the dance, “White Bird,’’ with Ruth Zelinka, escorted by Len Campbell, and Denise Wiesenmeyer, escorted by Louis Trutter, as the senior attendants. Vickie Altizer, escorted by Randy Tozer, was crowned Queen. WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, the Junior-Senior play, was produced in the spring and from there everything seemed to be moving quickly, so quickly that it was as if someone had turned the motion picture that surrounded us to twice normal speed. “Before It Fades Away, the Junior-Senior Prom, was held May 15, 1971, at the Lincoln Park Pavilion. Attendants were Vickie Altizer, escorted by Randy Tozer: Lilou Obrier, escorted by Len Campbell: Susan Stannard. escorted by Louis Trutter: and Ruth Zelinka, escorted by Randy Medd.
