SPYGLASS 1970 Glenwood High School Chatham, Illinois Mr. Kauerauf's second childhood. Ride 'Em, Cowboy!! The Over-The-Hill Hippies 2 Support Your Local Mental Health Center. TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration 5 Classes 15 Activities 57 Sports 93 Advertisements 105 Index 122 We proudly dedicate this 1970 Spyglass to you, Mrs. Guinan. The class of 1970 looks to you as a special friend, for it was you who helped and inspired us throughout our four years at Glenwood. And when the time came to prepare for prom, you were there from the start to the finish - planning, decorating, and advising. You guided our class to success. We say, Thank you, Mrs. Guinan.” 4 BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Charles Chapin Mr. William Clark Mr. Robert Lowery Mr. Ron Jackson Mr. Max Summers Dr. Robert Bowen Mr. William Leinberger The Board of Education was busy proposing and planning additions and improvements for the district during 1970. Several rooms were added to the elementary schools, while the high school benefited from a new vocational program, improved parking facilities, and an athletic field. 6 SUPERINTENDENT Congratulations! to the Publications Staff upon the successful completion of the 1970 issue of SPYGLASS. Thank you for this opportunity to offer the graduating seniors some practical and philosophical advice for fulfillment of their personal dreams and goals. Our efforts have been aimed at providing you with the opportunity to participate in a balanced variety of challenging activities from which you can build a solid background. It is my hope that you will continue your education through every resource at your command. Perhaps one should remember that the truly successful men and women of the world first mastered themselves before they tried to master business, government, the law, or whatever fields their personal dreams lead them to. They learned what is probably the most profound truth men have discovered in the history of organized society—that the truly successful men or women must be able to get along with other people. With the population explosion you will have to get along with other people. So develop a sense of brotherhood—a true interest in your fellowman. It has been a pleasure having been associated with you through your graduation. I feel sure Glenwood will continue to feel proud of you as you make progress along life’s path. 7 PRINCIPAL Congratulations to ti class of 1970. Young people entering the adult world must face the challenge of preserving their heritage and causing justifiable change in our society. These changes will only come about when young people are able to present workable solutions. Graduates, continue your education and prepare your minds so that you will be able to furnish the leadership necessary in the coming years. People become leaders only when they have the knowledge that will gain the respect of others. Mrs. Betty McCord Mrs. Loveta Manning 8 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL During the 1969-70 school year, the increase in student enrollment brought about the new position of assistant principal, which was filled by Mr. Mayoral. Michael Ytterberg CLASS HISTORY Since our high school years have come to a close, we often think back over all the good times we enjoyed. We entered the classrooms of Glenwood as freshmen in 1966 with an enrollment of 133 and had 122 graduating, the largest graduating class in Glenwood's history. Early in our freshman year, we elected David Warrington, president; Linda Davis, vice-president; Linda Gibson, secretary; and Kathy Dodge, treasurer. Our first Student Council representatives were Chris McCall, Susan Roberts, Beverly Schroll, and David Warrington. During our sophomore year, we elected Susan Roberts, president; Darcy Cooper, vice-president; Linda Gibson, secretary; and David Duke, treasurer. Our Student Council representatives were Diane Anderson, Alan Kelly, Chris McCall, and Susan Roberts. Experiencing our first Homecoming, Rhapsody In Blue”, the class chose Darcy Cooper and David Duke to the court. We sold sweatshirts as a money raising project for the Prom. We began our junior year by electing David McWherter, president; Diane Anderson, vice-president; Chris McCall, secretary; David Duke, treasurer. Our representatives to Student Council were Diane Anderson, Patty Burtle, Chris McCall, and Susan Roberts. Our representatives to the Homecoming, “Revolution,” were Jim Kennel and Linda Davis and Dave Warrington and Linda Gibson. That year, working toward the prom, we sold magazines and held candy sales at basketball games. Finally, after months of hard work on May 16, 1969, we presented “Coronation Ball” at the Leland Hotel, with the “Spoils of War” from Champaign providing the music. Master of Ceremonies for the event was David McWherter, and the bid poem was written by Rick Jones. The coronation of King John Kerska and Queen Karla Gathard highlighted the evening. Our senior class sponsors were Mrs. Guinan, Mr. Brown, Mrs. Pratt, Mr. Domanowski, and Miss Walch. Finally our senior year came, and we joyously welcomed Annbjorg (Ann) Lyng to Glenwood. Congratulations must go to the GHS AFS chapter for sponsoring a foreign exchange student from Norway, who adds so much to our student body. In the beginning of the senior year, we elected David Warrington, president; David McWherter, vice-president; Linda Gibson, secretary; and Chris McCall, treasurer. The class elected LindaGibson, Alan Kelly, Ann Lyng, Kim Murphy, and Susan Roberts to be student council representatives. The first semester was highlighted by the 1969 Homecoming, “Dawn of Creation,” sponsored by the Student Council. Darcy Cooper was crowned Queen, and Dave Warrington was King. Lance Charlson was chosen the first Mr. Redskin. Linda Davis was Queen of the FHA's “Sweetheart Dance.” The Junior-Senior Prom was held May 16, 1970, at the Teamster’s Union Hall. Susan Roberts escorted by David Warrington was crowned Queen. Members of the court were Linda Davis, first attendant escorted by Duane Muchow; Linda Gibson, second attendant escorted by Ron Stone; Kay Anderson escorted by Jim Kennel; and Darcy Cooper escorted by David Duke. Now that we are graduated, every person will always remember some particular event not always related to the class as a whole - for example, the paper wad fights in Biology II; the lab experiences of Mr. Brown and his students; “the Dirty Dozen;” and composition journals. We will remember national events that took place during our high school years: man’s first landing on the moon; the political assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Bobby Kennedy; the Chicago Convention; and the Richard Speck murders. Though the world was not so happy, Glenwood was. Glenwood gave us joy, frustration, hope, responsibility, and a friendship that we shall never forget. Most important of all is that it has given us an education. We are thankful for the knowledge we have received. So long, beautiful Glenwood, may YOU live forever! 29 LYNN ALEXANDER - Publications 3,4, Co-Editor of GLEN-ECHO; Music Contestant 1,2,3,4; FTA 3; French Club 2,3,4, Secretary; Glenwood Singers 1,2,3,4; A Cappella Choir 1,2,3,4; Glenwood Players 4, President; Musical 1,2,3,4. Rev. Koenig, in his Baccalaureate Address, set up “success” as the ultimate goal of all. He then established the steps to achieve this goal - THE STEPS to be based on the ultimate example. The first RULE is to be a servant to the people around you. Give service to others; give of yourself; keep the other persons’ interests first; have love for others. Rev. Koenig hastened to point out that the formula is not easy to follow but is well worth the struggle and is certainly possible. Scenes typical of seniors waiting . . . Rev. Salutatorian Don Cornelius cautioned parents to allow their children “to fly” but to remain available as sources of love, guidance, and protection. Lynn Alexander sang “Vissi d’ arte” (Love and Music) from the opera TOSCA by Puccini. The senior ensemble sang two numbers “Gonna’ Build a Mountain” and “May Each Day.” The ensemble was accompanied by Grethcen Finlay, who also played a duet (with Judy Cook), “American Youth Concerto” for the large group of assembled students, parents, and friends. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY GHS's National Honor Society initiated ten junior members as associates on February 27, 1970. These students added to the five senior members make up the elite membership of this club. To become eligible for election, the student must have a 3.25 average on a 4 point scale. In addition he must pass close scrutiny by a faculty committee who judge him on the bases of character, service, and leadership. Once he is voted in and if he maintains the 3.25 average, he becomes a N.H.S. life member upon high school graduation. Mrs. Carter, N.H.S. sponsor, begins the initiation ceremony - senior members carry on the ceremony. 61 K E Y C L U B ROW 1, Left to Right: Mr. Collins, Dave Brammeier, Jack Willey, Tom Bostick, Dave Aschauer, Jim Craven. Theis outstanding service activities included helping at the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind, and at McFarland Zone Center. On working to help these groups of people, the Key Club put forward a genuine effort to better our community. In October the club sponsored the Fourth Annual Key Club-Faculty Basketball Game, which was a large fund raising project. In February the club turned out to collect for the annual Heart Fund Drive. This year the Springfield Area Key Clubs hosted the Annual Key Club Convention, March 20-22, for the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District. Glen wood was responsible for the transportation for the visiting Key Clubbers and their guests. Involved in the Recreation Committee, Glenwood sponsored the Glenwood Singers to entertain at this convention. OFFICERS, ROW 1: Arnold McMann, Sec.: Mike Ytterberg, V.Pres.; Bob Poppenga, Treas. STUDENT COUNCIL This year’s Student Council tried many new and unusual activities. The Council attempted to function more for the student body by promoting these activities: Jelly Bean Day, Class Competition, Spirit Walls, and Turkey Day. The Council also sponsored Lance Charlson as Chief Redskin. Work has now begun to plant trees in the Courtyard as a result of the Council’s efforts. The Council attended the annual meeting of the Illinois Association of Student Councils at Glasford. The Council enforced the established rules, and they tried to make students take pride in their school. Mr. Mayoral was the Council’s advisor. He gave much of his time and energy for extra activities of the Council. The Council owes much of its success to his guidance, and to Miss Gibson, co-advisor. 63 A.F.S. STUDENT Annbjorg Lyng It has been ten short months since Annbjorg Lyng came to Glenwood from a farm near Steinkjer, Norway. During this time she has made many friends at Glenwood. Outspoken and liberal, Ann has expressed her views to others on various controversial subjects. Ann has been active in school activities, being a member of the Senior Girls’ Ensemble, Student Council, A Cappella Choir, FTA, and Publications Staff. She was also in the casts of both the KING AND I and UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE. During the second semester Ann, who plans to become a language teacher, taught World History and German I (under the Cadet Teaching Program). We at Glenwood will miss Ann, for she has given much to both the faculty and student body. 64 ROW 1, Left to Right: J. Brunk, S. Stoppelwerth, S. MacDonald, D. Wiesenmeyer, C. Markus, M. Challis, D. The Glenwood Chorus originated in 1957 with the twenty-three members, six of whom were boys. The chorus’ activities throughout the years have changed little, however, as the first chorus presented a Christmas program, participated in music contests, and performed at Baccalaureate. By 1959 the mixed chorus had divided into a boy’s chorus and a girl’s chorus with a combined total of fifty-four. The boys eventually left the Glenwood Chorus in 1960 and the girls continued. Slowly, but surely, the group became mixed again and by 1966 blossomed forth in new burgundy robes. The group has maintained its general size of ninety, varying more or less throughout the years. The Glenwood Chorus in 1967 became the A Capella choir. The choir has provided the backbone for the musical, spring concerts, and this year and last, the Fine Arts Festival, as well as the annual Christmas Program, contests, and Baccalaureate-Graduation performances. Tim Brady acted as Master of Ceremonies at the Prom. The theme was carried out in beautiful murals depicting the sun coming into a dark and shadowy world. One of these murals was used as a background for pictures. Black lights in the black cave entrance and strobe lights added to the psychedelic atmosphere. The queen was crowned against a background of a huge peace symbol entwined in a thorny bush. Susan Roberts, escorted by Dave Warrington, was crowned as queen. Her attendants were Linda Davis, escorted by Duane Muchow; Kay Anderson, escorted by Jim Kennel; Darcy Cooper, escorted by David Duke; and Linda Gibson, escorted by Ron Stone. Music for the evening was provided by Serra Leigh from St. Louis.
