F 0 R E W 0 R D By thumbing through me, the 1965 SPYGLASS, and a few of my predecessors, you can see a yearly record of the growth of Glenwood High as a school. No little hick school is Glenwood, my pages loudly proclaim. Look! Even my brand-new cover shouts of Glen-wood's modern ideas. And next year I promise that I and the school I represent shall be even bigger and better. This year I welcomed several new teachers, courses, and clubs to our growing school. Even many of the big citified schools cannot boast of an all-school musical such as the one industrious Glenwood students and teachers put on in the spring. One of the nicest new things to happen to Glenwood this year, however, was the large trophy cases which seemed to light up the hall with the many trophies won by our athletes this year and in years past. Glenwood students also became familiar with the many exhibits it contained. Remember the one which gave us an introduction to our friend Jose Perez and his native land of Chile? No one can accuse Glenwood of being left in the nineteenth century. If any one does try though, just say, Maybe you'd like to take a look at my 1965 SPYGLASS. I think it may change your opinion. We're very proud of Glenwood! 2 Administration.................3 Dedication....................6 Classes.......................13 Activities.....................57 Athletics......................87 Advertisements................99 Senior Activities.............116 Index........................118 3 t warn S UPERINTENDENT WILLIAM D. HO VET Congratulations to the Class of 1965. It hardly seems possible that another school year has gone by. Each year seems to go by a little faster than the one before. Is this a sign of old age? If so, remember, you will have the same experience. In 1980, old age, your yearbook will become a real treasure-house of experiences. You will find yourself taking a long look through the back issues of the SPYGLASS and recalling all those happy, eventful days that you spent in the halls of Glenwood. Especially interesting will be those pictures of the old flame, your best friends, athletic events, proms, and your favorite teachers. Best wishes for health, success, and happiness in the years to come, and re-memberthat your old teacher may still be around in 1980 reminiscing through his SPYGLASS. 4 PRINCIPAL DONALD E. KAUERAUF Congratulations! Class of 1965. The senior class of 1965 now has a new challenge to meet, that of the adult world. The future is bright for the young person who has the desire to succeed at life and is willing to work to this goal. It is my hope that your school days at Glenwood have been both happy and prosperous. The 1965graduating class has distinguished itself in many areas of the school program. This SPYGLASS will help these seniors recall many fine memories for years to come. Several of the memories I will have of this year are the T.V. program; the fine musical, MR. CRAIN ; and the Sangamo Conference Baseball Championship. Best of wishes in the years to come, Seniors. 5 DEDICA TIOJV The 1965 Publications Staff respectfully dedicates this yearbook to Mrs. Lucille Hutchison. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Four years ago the class of '65 entered Glenwood. Since then time has gone by very quickly. We will now look back on these years. The class began its organization by electing freshman officers. Cleve Fenley was our President; Steve Grummon, Vice President; Fred Meyer, Secretary; and Lynn Siciliano, Treasurer. Our Student Council members were Ron Treat, Rodney Taverna, Gari Ori, Diane Brumfield, and Susan Green. As freshmen we did not have any money-making projects; although, we did collect class dues. The big thing of the year was our freshman initiation, and we will always remember when David Miller put a diaper on Fred Meyer. After summer vacation we entered our sophomore year. This year we elected Sue Finlay, President; David Cornelius, Vice President; Bruce Grunewald, Secretary; and Susan Bramlet, Treasurer. For Student Council we retained Ron and Gary and added John Dietel and Cleve Fenley. Our activities for this year included the coat check at basketball games and a car wash. In addition, we took orders for many sweatshirts, which did not arrive. The next year we boasted of being upperclassmen. We elected Steve Blakeman as President of the Junior Class; John Dietel, Vice President; Mary Leinberger, Secretary; and Janet Bartscht, Treasurer. Due, however, to Janet's moving to Springfield after the first semester, we elected Judy Schaefer as our new Treasurer. This year's Student Council members were Ron Treat, Diane Wilborn, Sue Bramlet, and Gary Ori. During our Junior year we found ourselves very busy getting ready for the prom. Our activities included candy sales at basketball games, a car wash, and magazine sales. We also presented the Junior play, ''Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, under the direction of Mrs. Barash. Finally on May 8, 1964, we presented the Junior-Senior prom, Wonderland by Night, at the St. Nicholas Hotel. Finally we were seniors. Our officers were Steve Blakeman, President; Harold Gibson, Vice President; Mary Leinberger, Secretary; and David Trutter, Treasurer. Our Student Council members were Bob Herigodt, Dave Keltner, Ron Treat, and Lynn Barnes. During the year we were very happy to have Jose Perez as a member of our senior class. Sharon Ladage won the DAR Award, and Virginia Espenschied won the Betty Crocker Home making Award. Although we did not have any money-making projects, we did participate in the Junior-Senior play, Pure as the Driven Snow. Some of us were also in Mr. Crane, the school's first musical. On May 7, 1965, the Juniors presented the Junior-Senior Prom, An Affair to Remember, at the Holiday Inn East with Jules Blattner providing the music. Miss Sue Finlay reigned as Queen of the 1965 Prom. The court included Miss Sue Bramlet, Miss Sharon Ladage, Miss Midi May, Miss Sandra Otti, Miss Judy Schaefer, and Miss Beverly Skaggs. Our class now has 66 members with only 54 of the original 83 Freshman class remaining. Our sponsors during these four years were Mr. Cleaves, Miss McLoud, and Mr. Wilson. Glenwood High School has been the grounds for much of our scholastic education; but we have also shared our defeats, victories, friendships, and romances. After we leave the doors of GHS, we will often look back on these fond memories. 39 I BILL ABNER EVAN BALE JOE A SC HAUER CONNIE ADAMS 40 MARY KAY BARNES KAREN BRUNK SUSAN BRAMLET STEVE BLAKEMAN GENEVIEVE CAREY KARIN COOPER JOHN DIETEL PAMELA CHRISTENSEN SUSAN CHALLIS ANITA DONNELLY CLEVE FENLEY VIRGINIA ESPENSCHIED SUSAN FINLAY RUTH DUNHAM JUDY EDWARDS SUSAN GREEN JOHN CUILLOU BRUCE GRUNEWALD ROBERT GRIFFIN HAROLD GIBSON CHESTER HO HI ME R JIM JACOBS ROBERT HURST ROBERT JACOBS LLOYD INSLEE RICK McCALL FRED MEYER MIDI MAY Charles McDonald EDDIE McCULLEY MARY ANN McLEAN MIKE McMANN CHARLES NEMECZ MIKE MOORE BARBARA Me GOWN FIRST ROW: B. During the year, the forty-four boys of the club organized an Industrial Arts basketball team. They challenged the faculty, the FFA, and the Industrial Arts clubs of Pawnee and Greenview, and had a won-lost record of 2-3. Ambitious members also brightened up the school library with bright flower boxes for Mrs. Fuller’s window plants. In the spring delegates were sent to the state convention held in Springfield. At this meeting a member of the Glenwood chapter, Bob Wilson, was chosen reporter for Region 2 of Illinois. Jim Maisenbacher, President, discusses plans with other officers, Gary Ori, Bob Medd, and Bob Griffin. This year Glenwood hosted the CMS Music Festival and the County Junior High Festival and participated in the County High School Band Festival at Griffin. The band also gave a Christmas concert with the chorus and gave its own Spring Concert. This year the band did not attend the State Band Contest. This was a very busy year for the stage band. The band placed second in the contest sponsored by the local musicians' union, losing to Edinburg by only one grade point. The band then prepared for the musical comedy MR. Mrs. Gates directs the choms in one of its numbers. The seventy members of the chorus found themselves very busy during the 1964-65 school year. To begin the activities, the chorus participated in the Sangamon County Music Festival at Griffin High, November 5. Then in December chorus members journeyed to Morrisonville for the CMS Music Festival. At Christmas time they and the band presented a concert entitled Home for the Holidays . On March 27, the chorus and band sponsored the first all-school musical comedy, MR. CRANE. The Spring Choral Concert, concerts during National Music Week, and performances at Baccalaureate and Commencement climaxed a busy and rewarding year. Through its diligent work the chorus plans to purchase choir robes for all its members in the near future. 70 L. to R.: K. Coontz, M. Germann, B. Derringer, B. McCully, P. Wilson, G. Warrington, C. The musical, which was based upon Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow, was presented under the excellent direction of Mrs. Charlene Gates and Mr. Ted Chase. This year the spring and fall meetings of the South Central Area Student Librarians' Association were held at Glenwood. The Association's president for 1964-65 was Carolyn White. The Poster Club is composed of students who give their time and talent to the making of posters urging the use of the library and its many new books. M. Stout, S. Reinert and M. Beard work on another poster for our halls. Mrs. Fuller, school librarian and club advisor, checks book lists. •:..........• 5ose etez uilnilran FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT Jose Perez came to Glenwood this fall from Chile as a participant of the American Field Service and a regular American student for nine months. Jose quickly became as American as apple pie and skateboards. The blending of cultures was not just one-sided, however, and Glenwood students soon learned much about their South American neighbor Chile. Here are just a few glimpses of Jose and his many Glenwood friends. We celebratedChile's Independence Day, September 18, with an assembly during which Jose presented us with a flag from Chile. Seniors help Jose celebrate his birthday. 75 Jose furnished our first display in the new trophy case with an exhibit of things from Chile. — PROMCOU T V’ ' r 'll  I r ‘,7 .fj I v v . ? Why it's a babe ! A WORKING GIRL’S SECRET PURE AS THE DRIVEN SNOW, or A WORKING GIRL'S SECRET, was presented in true melodramatic fashion by the junior and senior classes. When Purity Dean, the downtrodden working girl with a secret, is befriended by Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Logan, who hire her as a maid at their inn, she falls in love with Leander Longfellow, a manly hero who works in a pickle factory (What a romantic call ing!). Purity's happiness is clouded by her dreadful secret, however, and by that black-hearted fiend, Mortimer Frothingham, and by her rival for Leander's affections, the snobbish Imogene Pickens. The audience enjoyed an evening of hissing the villain and applauding virtue's (and Purity's) triumph. l t’RjOWj A. Summers, G. Southwick, E. Bale; 2nd ROW; K. Nutt, K. Brandon, K. Guillou, N. Editing and producing the SPYGLASS and the many editions of the GLEN-ECHO is no easy job, but those to whom the task has been entrusted have had spectacular success. When called upon to meet a close deadline or to think up something original for a program they have been asked to print, the publications staff under the supervision of Miss McLoud, Miss Tigner, and Mrs. Hutchison has always managed to succeed where others may have thrown up their hands in despair. The Impacts provided the music while everybody danced around the graves and sipped the special witch's brew. Queen Mary Kay Barnes was crowned most bewitching. Her court included Susan Bramlet, Sharon Ladage, Sue Finlay, and Judy Schaefer. The evening will be remembered by everybody as a dance that was really original and different.
