Published by Glenwood High School Chatham, Illinois The Spy Glass 1962 Volume XII Foreword The 1962 SPYGLASS staff invites you to travel with the Glenwood Red-skin through his period of maturation. By watching him grow under the guidance of the chief from a young boy to an interested and active brave, we hope that you will see yourself accomplishing the same thing through your scholastic and social activities pictured. 2 Table of Contents Dedication.......................................... 4 Administration...................................... 5 Freshmen............................................15 Sophomores..........................................23 Juniors.............................................31 Seniors.........t...................................41 Activities..........................................65 Athletics...........................................85 Advertisements......................................99 Index..............................................116 3 WE RESPECTFULLY DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO MISS BARBARA TIGNER For the past five years those students who have had you for an advisor or teacher have benefited greatly by the association. With your dry wit and competent manner, you have helped us not only to learn, but also to assume the responsibilities of being young adults. We wish to take this opportunity to pay tribute to you and to thank you for the interest, friendship, and help that you have given us. 4 Faculty Message from the Superintendent Congratulations to the class of 1962! You have completed twelve years formal education in preparation for your adult life. How you have prepared will be a great factor in your success or failures in life. Your preparation is not completed entirely, in as much as, the learning process begins at birth and continues throughout the life span. Some of you will seek further preparation and others will enter the task of earning a living immediately. Do well what you choose, and do it with pride. If you can't face the person you see in the mirror, life will be one frustration after another. MR. PAGE 6 GOOD READING--I hope you find the 62 Spyglass to be the greatest yet! School annuals are put together with a good deal of toil and concern on the part of those responsible for their production. To those people, I wish to acknowledge a job well done. To the pupils pictured within these covers and written about herein, I extend my wish for your success in your future undertakings. Each step of progress you make will be watched with interest, pride, and hope for your continuous success. Good luck to you all. MR. HOVEY Message from the Principal 7 MR. As young Americans the Sophomores are well on their way to meeting these responsibilities. More specifically, the class of 1964 is learning co-operation, a basic principle of democracy. They have taken positions of leadership in athletics and in several organizations. Asa class they undertook several successful projects this year, which will aid them immeasurably in their Junior year. Carol Funderburk Kenny Fite Barbara Gwinn Nancy G iff in Douglas Hanson Susan Harkins Donna Head Larry Hedrick Nancy Krueger John May Patricia Kramer Francine Leach Marlene Moyer Robert Laswell Mary McCully Ray Moore Cheryl Murphy John Pierce Madison Post Jane Rollet Juniors JUNIORS Another year, another rank, and another step toward the future. The class of 1963 entered its Junior year with eager anticipation of the activities ahead. Their first class play, MISTAKES AT THE BLAKES, was one of their most important money making projects. It and other projects spurred them onto thoughts of the Junior-Senior Prom which was held at the State House Inn. With the characteristic confidence of Juniors, they feel ready to accept the responsibility of being Seniors. Gary Blake and his brother, Tom, are young writers who bombard publishers with material. About the time they feel their efforts are hopeless an attorney brings word of Uncle MacDonald’s death. In his will Tom inherits $50, 000, and Gary is given the care of Charlie, a sheep dog (so he thinks), until he dies. Tom thinks that he is pretty well off until Ducky Lucky, a very strong-headed girl with a prize fighter brother, hits him with an iron-bound breach of promise case. When Roberta Sims arrives and identifies herself as Charlie, Tom wants Gary’s part of the will. Gary hands it over without knowing that Charlie is a girl. In order to save Tom's money Gary informs Ducky Lucky that Tom is a bit off, and in the meantime Roberta falls for Gary. Tom goes along with the crazy act, as he is trying to get rid of Ducky Lucky. One side-splitting incident follows another leading to the climax in which Roberta and Gary, who won $10, 000 on a story, are hearing wedding bells. Tom and Ducky Lucky end up in love. ’’Mistakes at the Blakes” Mrs. Gaskey, Director, C. Ostermeier and P. Bradley, Student Directors. 40 Seniors SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On August 27, 1958, a nearly petrified freshman class from Chatham Junior High entered the front door of Glenwood High School. Soon our class organized and elected Richard Haak, Class President; Ann Lee, Vice-President; Jonette White, Secretary; Nancy Skaggs, Treasurer; Martha Moyer and Ronnie Hohimer, Student Council; Alfred Ostermeier, ABC representative. Mr. Fox was chosen our class sponsor for all four years. Our activities included the Ugly Man Dance at which Steve Stout represented the freshman class, the carnival, and our Christmas party Winter Wonderland. The school fire on January 25, 1959, was the scar on our freshman year. The next step--sophomores! We elected Martha Moyer, President; Steve Stout, Vice-President; Ann Lee, Secretary; Susan Burtle, Treasurer. Linda Earles, Jonette White, Joan Stout, and Mary Jean Long were Student Council members. Mary Jean and Joan attended the Illinois State Student Council convention in Chicago. We sold sweatshirts, ran a coat check at basketball games, and had a sock hop for the class. As Juniors, our group was quite busy with magazine sales, distributing poinsettia plants, candy sales at basketball games, the Junior class play,THE Y GAVE HIM A COED, and planning the prom Flower Drum Song. Judy Rouland served as President; Gary Marr, Vice-President; Janet Crawford, Secretary; and Martha Moyer, Treasurer. Jonette White, Joan Stout, Mary Jean Long, and Dan Flynn were Student Council members for the class. Jonette and Joan went to the I.A.S.C. convention in 1961. Now the home stretch had come. Our senior class bfficers were Steve Stout, President; Mike Manning, Vice-President; Roy Mayer, Secretary;andA1 Ostermeier, Treasurer. The same Student Council members were elected for our senior year. Jonette, Joan, Mary Jean, and Dan. Many seniors who plan to be teachers took part in Student Government Day sponsored by the Student Council. At the prom Steve Stout gave the response, Dan Flynn gave the invocation, and Roy Mayer gave the class history. Our Valedictorians were Joan Stout and Janet Crawford while Carolyn Sharp was Saluta-torian. After the flurry to prepare for the prom, baccalaureate, and graduation, many memories of our years at Glenwood crowd our minds. Friends, teachers, and parents may wish us well, but we are on our own now as we leave these doors. 42 Seniors National Honor Society 2,4; Latin Club 1,2; Poster Club 2; G.A.A. 1,2; Publications 3,4, Glen-Echo Co-Editor 3, Spyglass Distribution Manager 4; Junior Play 3, Crew; Senior Play 4, Cast; Pep Club 1; National French Award 3; Typing Award 4; Essay Winner 4.
