THE NUSHKA 1952 PUBLISHED BY THE ANNUAL STAFF OF GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL GLENWOOD, N. C. Joreword Of all our priceless treasures, memories seem to be our most cherished one. As Thomas Moore once wrote: “JT hen time who steals our years away Shall steal our pleasures too. The mem’ry of the past will stay And half our joy r s renew.” So to the students of Glenwood High School, we, the class of 1952, present this volume of the NUSHKA in hopes that as you look at its pages and pictures you will recall more vividly the happy days spent here. Lt)edication m ' To Mr. W. P. Whitesides, we dedicate this year’s Nushka. During Mr. Wliitesides’ stay at Glenwood, lie lias proven himself worthy of this honor by being friendly, co-operative and sympathetic. He is always willing to stop whatever he is doing in order to offer a helping hand to a student. To him we give our undying gratitude. M ere words cannot be said or written to show our appreciation and love for him, so to him. we, the class of 1952, dedicate our yearbook. THE NUSHKA STAFF •£Ae no c ) v et Wilma D. The proceeds from this play were used to entertain the Seniors with a Hawaiian Banquet April 19. 1951. The class of 1952. with thirty-five enrolled after many gains and loses, has begun its final year under the supervision of Miss Wilma Byrd. The officers are: President, Jackie Thomas; Vice-President, Lucille Greer; Secretary and Treasurer, Hazel Robbins. As the 1952 Nushka goes to press our minds wander forward to the final events of this year—the Senior Play, the Junior-Senior Banquet, the Homecoming and finally Graduation. Also, if our hopes are fulfilled, a trip to Washington next spring after graduation. As you read this .history you will remember that the thirty-five seniors it relates to worked together and declared as their motto, “We’ll Find a Way Or Make One.” SARAH MARGARET MORRIS, Historian s. emor Best Personality Jimmy Mashburn Joyce Rumfelt Estes Most Athletic Edward Poteat Elsie Kavlor Most Popular Donald Rickett Margaret Harris Cutest Donald Gallion Lucille Greer Laziest Helen Rawing Lawrence Duval Biggest Baby Nannie Pannell Bill Guffey not present when j tures were made. As I walk up the steps of the apartment house w iere I live, I notice how green the buds of the trees are. I let myself into tile building and st _ p in t ie foyer to get my mail. Among the letters in the box is one postmarked Glenwood, North Caro- ina. It is an invitation to the Homecoming to be held in May. As I go up to the apartment I find myself thinking of mv classipates; how scattered they have become; and the various vocations they chose for themselves. I remember Winnie Belle Hogan who was always quiet in school. She is ' Mow a famous artist living in the Lower Bronx of New York. Also in New York are Betty Anderson, a Powers Model who was recently chosen, by the men in service, “The Girl I’d Like Most to be Shipwrecked on a Desert Island with.” Charles Edward Poteat, a radio technician, is employed at the world famous Radio City. Then there’s Donald Rickett who made his money as a stock-broker. He spends much of his time on the famous Wall Street. Margaret Harris, who makes her home in the great city, has just left for Europe on a concert tour. She is one of the finest pianists in America. With her is Nannie Pannell, her private secretary, also a graduate of the class of ’52. Then there were several who went into the field of teaching. Among these are Nadine Huffman who is a Physical Education teacher in Chariest m, South Carolina. Harrill Morgan is teaching Agriculture in a small town in Kentucky. Shirley Lawing is also in Kentucky, teaching Public School Music. Then, too, there was Jimmy Mashburn who majored in Geometry at Wake Forest College so that he might pass on some of his love for this subject to others. Several of the girls and some of the boys are quite happily married, settled in small towns where they live their full, happy lives, content with the place and their occupations. Lucille Greer, Lawrence Duval, Tommy Ferguson, Patsy Swann, and Bill Guffy are among these. Mary Ruth Cox finally married one of her many boy friends and is now living in South America. Betty Sue Baker married a boy friend from East Marion, and they now live in Atlanta, Georgia, where her husband is mayor. Eleanor Silver, who married an alumnus of Glenwood Hi, is now starring in her own TV show and i s aclaimed as one of the smartest comediannes of our time. Sara Margaret Morris also married a former student of Glenwood and they have two lovely children, Hub and Grady. In her spare time she writes short stories as a free-lance writer. Another writer is Hazel Robbins, who has had several novels published and a book of Poems which has made her famous. Donald Gallion, manager of the Johnson Motor Lines in Charlotte, N. C., has as his chief me¬ chanic, Roger Poteat. Pauline Woody is head nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland. Catherine Laws is co-owner of a restaurant, “The Green Goddess” in DeLand, Florida. James Swann is the owner of a fleet of cross-country vans working out of Georgia, and Dean Swann is a tobacco salesman in Winston-Salem. Traveling over the country is Gwen Vess, manager of the See-Saw Travelers, a girls basketball team. Elsie Kaylor is one of her most valuable players. Hazel Bolick who answered the highest call, is a foreign missionary in China. Jackie Thomas added to his ability to speak French, other languages and became an interpreter for the government. Joann Holland has become the Number One singer of Popular music and has recorded many rec¬ ords for R. C. A. Victor. Joyce Rumfelt Estes is the proprietor of an antique shop located in Maine. Helen Lawing is the sole owner of one of the most modern Beauty Salons in Virginia. While my.thoughts have been wandering to the acquaintances of my school years, I have been .getting ready to attend a Fashion Revue of an Exclusive Dress Shoppe, owned and operated by my roommate, Blanche Marlowe, for the daily news the “Star” whereT am a reporter. As I leave the apartment I am making plans to attend the Homecoming and think what fun it will be to see all my classmates and talk to them again.
