PROLOGUE He who plants a tree, plants a hope.” Trees symbolize life—so the Tree of Glenville symbolizes the life of our class. The stronger branches support the weaker ones, so that the tree, as a whole, stands straight and strong. A tree grows over the years, and though the growth is slow, it is steady and sure. We have grown slowly and deliberately during these three years. Coming to Glenville from junior high schools all over the city, we couldn’t quite understand the different atmosphere of Glenville. Then we began to know our classmates and to work with them for the good of the school. There was a certain bond of friendship that only a school like ours could provide. We were growing. We found qualities of guidance in our teachers that strengthened us. Our minds, our personalities, and our maturity — these things grew in us. As a tree that reaches maturity assumes stature, so we, as a class, assumed stature. We are now’ ready to face the storms of life without being bent or swayed by the strain, for we know' that belonging to the Tree of Glenville has provided us with a firm foundation. Pane 3

DEDICATION During our years at GIcnville, our class has always depended upon the experienced guidance of our adviser, Miss Melba Benson. Understanding, patient, and calm, she always knew of a solution to our problems, no matter how difficult they were. In our adviser, we found a friend as well as a teacher—a friend who was never too busy to say hello to us in the hall or talk with us for a few minutes. When tempers were hot, when opinions were divided, and when it seemed as though we were at an impasse, she was always there, helping us smooth over our difficulties and bringing us together once more. Therefore, we, the June class of 1953, dedicate this book to Miss Melba R. Benson, whose guidance we ll never forget. MISS MELBA BENSON Class Adviser A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS The eighteen years which cover the life of the members of this class has seen changes in the application of science to industry, transportation, medicine, and living which surpass the changes during the generations in the past. It is probable that this rate of change will continue and perhaps increase. High school graduates will need to continue their education to keep abreast with developments about them. In the midst of these constant changes we recognize those phases of living which are continuous and unchanging. The homely virtues of honesty, industry, sincerity, and friendliness are no less important than they were in the past. DR. ARTHUR T. CARR Principal
