The stronger branches support the weaker ones, so that the tree, as a whole, stands straight and strong. A tree grows over the years, and though the growth is slow, it is steady and sure. We have grown slowly and deliberately during these three years. Coming to Glenville from junior high schools all over the city, we couldn’t quite understand the different atmosphere of Glenville. Then we began to know our classmates and to work with them for the good of the school. There was a certain bond of friendship that only a school like ours could provide. We were growing. We found qualities of guidance in our teachers that strengthened us. Our minds, our personalities, and our maturity — these things grew in us. As a tree that reaches maturity assumes stature, so we, as a class, assumed stature. We are now’ ready to face the storms of life without being bent or swayed by the strain, for we know' that belonging to the Tree of Glenville has provided us with a firm foundation. Pane 3 DEDICATION During our years at GIcnville, our class has always depended upon the experienced guidance of our adviser, Miss Melba Benson. Understanding, patient, and calm, she always knew of a solution to our problems, no matter how difficult they were. In our adviser, we found a friend as well as a teacher—a friend who was never too busy to say hello to us in the hall or talk with us for a few minutes. When tempers were hot, when opinions were divided, and when it seemed as though we were at an impasse, she was always there, helping us smooth over our difficulties and bringing us together once more. Therefore, we, the June class of 1953, dedicate this book to Miss Melba R. Benson, whose guidance we ll never forget. MISS MELBA BENSON Class Adviser A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS The eighteen years which cover the life of the members of this class has seen changes in the application of science to industry, transportation, medicine, and living which surpass the changes during the generations in the past. It is probable that this rate of change will continue and perhaps increase. High school graduates will need to continue their education to keep abreast with developments about them. In the midst of these constant changes we recognize those phases of living which are continuous and unchanging. The homely virtues of honesty, industry, sincerity, and friendliness are no less important than they were in the past. DR. ARTHUR T. CARR Principal FACULTY ARTHUR T. VELLA RUDNICK, for her thoroughly organized records of all class activities. CAROL KOHN, for her energetic and persistent collections of class dues. OUR LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the 12A class of Glenville High School, County of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, being of legal graduating age, and of sound mind, do make public and declare this our Last Will and Testament. Item I: Item 2: Item 3: Item 4: Item 5: Item 6: Item 7: Item 8: Item 9: Item 10: To those of you who lack a lunch pass and cautiously walk through the halls we leave our seats at Perkal's. To those who feel the need of sleep during the long day we bequeath the study halls. To those who are of strong will and body we bequeath the Torch room. To those who long for excitement we leave the fire alarm in the lunchroom. To those who enjoy annoying people we leave the house telephones. To those in need of amusement we bequeath the interestingly carved desk tops in all the rooms. To the future 12A s we bequeath rooms 150 A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and all the headaches that go with them. To the lOB’s we bequeath the freezing halls and corridors on Monday mornings. To those in need of puzzles and riddles we heartily bequeath the Ohio State Psychological Test. To all of those who enter Glenville’s portals we bequeath our spirit and our memories of knowledge, fun, and friendships. The foregoing document was signed by the 12A class in our presence and by them published and declared as their Last Will and Testament; and at their request, and in their presence, and in the presence of each other, we hereunto subscribe our names as attesting witnesses at Glenville High School, the eighteenth day of June, 1953, A.D. Witnesses: Laura Edu ards Helen Ruhlen Linley M. Thomas Gertrude Campbell Melba Benson Charles Ford Page tO Sthm FROM SEED TO SAPLING Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree. Yes, we all agree that a tree possesses a majestic beauty and grandeur never imitated by human hands. A tree also symbolizes truth, purity, and a way of life to all mankind. A seed is planted, a hope for the future, and soon a little seedling, green and inexperienced, sprouts and, as it grows to full height, the wisdom of past generations and civilizations makes a distinct mark upon it. We, the class of June, 195$, are an example of these giants of the earth. In September, 1950, we entered Glenville, green and inexperienced, just as a seedling is. And as we advanced upward to great heights toward a shining goal, our full beauty and talents blossomed. It all began in the fall of 1950. We hoped our first year in high school as freshmen would prove exciting and significant. The first few weeks we strained our mental ability, striving to do our best on the various guidance tests. That was followed by patient conferences for the purpose of selecting a suitable vocation. The highlight of our tenth grade was the 10B mixer given by our upper classmen. This was a rollicking success, which we all heartily enjoyed. Time passed and our tree of knowledge was slowly growing firm and strong. We were now upper classmen —11 A's. We walked through Glenvilie's halls with heads held high, for now- we were allowed to eat, the first half of the period. Then came the campaign promises and the numerous petitions awaiting our valuable signatures. Our class was now officially organized and our officers, the supporting limbs of our tree, were selected. Our debut into society arrived when our first class affair was held. The name for this festivity was the Tiger Rag. The fun began with a jitterbug contest and ended in a good time for all. Page 22 We couldn’t wait for the summer to end to start back to school, for now we were full-fledged seniors. Our tree had grown and was now flourishing. Our affairs were numerous, including the Foul Ball” held at Thanksgiving Time and the 10B mixer given by our 12B Senior Sponsors. Our guest star was Don Jay, a celebrated song composer and singer. The various skits given included an impersonation by Carol Kohn and Irv Bell and, of course, a dance by our lovely ballerina, Ellen Wolff. We featured for the first time a tap-dance duet by Carole Wade and Marilyn Sokol. Our first night affair was presented in night club style. It was called the 101 Club since we are the one hundred and first class to graduate from our Alma Mater—Glenville. A half of a semester passed, and now our tree was full grown. It was silhouetted against the pale blue sky, a firm and solid trunk with lovely spreading branches and soft shimmering leaves. Yes, we were 12A’s. Our hopes and ideals were fulfilled in that glorious semester. And as we cheered the days away, tears ran down our cheeks expressing the mingled joy and sadness in our hearts. Our first night affair in the 12A was called The Thing.” The main skit was a comic impersonation of the quiz game, You Bet Your Life.” Other memorable affairs followed, such as Class Nite and our Senior Prom, that unforgettable evening when the soft ballroom lights reflected the long shimmering formals worn. Commencement arrived all too soon, and our fond farewells were said. We parted—only literally, for in spirit we will always be together just as one big family tree. Poo IS SCATTERED LEAVES The year is 1973, and the leaves on our Tree of Glenville have aged and dispersed. Many changes have occurred in the scientific world, but people are still the same. A new play is making its debut at the Hanna. The production. A Tree Grows in Glenville, stars that famous Broadway movie actress, JUNE KNIGHT. As Society Reporter on the Daily News, I have been assigned to cover this world premier and note the attending celebrities. The play was written by those famous writers, ANITA SHAW EISNER and HELENE O'NEIL RESNICK, and produced by BERNICE ZANUCK SIMON. Head prop-mistress, PHYLLIS TANNENBAUM, takes prize-winning photographs in her spare time. Standing outside the theater is promoter MUTZIE ANDERSON, the guy who knows all the angles. His two bouncers. JOE SOLOMON and HARVEY ROSENTHAL, are sizing up the crowd. MUTZIE is smiling now. He recognizes an old friend, LESTER (SHMESTER) FRANK, the bookie, and his buddy SHELDON GORDON, the prominent millionaire. SHELLY made his fortune by sleeping in the window of WIRTSHAFTER and WIRT SHAFTER'S department store. In school he got zeros for sleeping in class, and now he gets paid for it. That's life! Who is this coming down the street in a Salvation Army uniform? Why it's RONNY S1MKOFF. I hear that his butler, BERNIE GELFAND, is going to resign. BERNIE says that his job is becoming so respectable that he will have to shave if he doesn't quit. JIMMY ARNOLD, DON CHAREIN, SANFORD SOLOMON, JIMMY BROWN, ED FEIN, and MIKE KORNHAUSER are all wearing the Khakies and Blues of our Armed Forces. After twenty years, the draft finally has caught up with them. I see that JAMESINA CLARK is also wearing a uniform. She is a gym instructor for the WACS. I have just received word that the posters for this event were created especially by that famous artist, DON TOULOUSE” SCHWEIKERT. At the ticket office I see SHIRLEY CALHOUN, who started on her career by working at the Glenville Noon Movies. Approaching the ticket window is SAUL EISEN. former treasurer of the Student Council. SAUL now owns EISEN-BURROWS BOOK CORPORATION. NANCY ADAMS, another leaf” on our tree, is walking through the crowd with a microphone in her hand, interviewing the many celebrities who are making their appearance at this premier. Let's listen in on their conversations for a few minutes. Indies and Gentlemen: That great commentator, LOUELLA FORKOS, has come all the way from Hollywood to be present at this premier. MISS FORKOS, what do you think of the play?” Well, NANCY, I'm a little partial to it because all of my old friends are in it. I think that in time, the play will reach Hollywood.” Thank you, MISS FORKOS. Here comes that famous team of BASKIN and COVILLE, who are making their mark in science. COVILLE is discovering new worlds, and BASKIN is mapping them. Another famous team, KENNEDY and KNUDSON, is passing the 'mike' now. MR. KENNEDY, just a minute, please.” RICHARD, I've heard that you and JAY are teaming up again. Is that true? Yes it is, NANCY. I am honored to say that I have just been elected president of the Junior Birdmen of the Glenville Alumni, and JAY is vice president in charge of the chess team.” Thank you, JAY and RICHARD. Hope you enjoy the play!” P w« so I see a handsome couple walking over to the ticket office. Why it's SHIRLEY and RONNY BAER. In case you don't recall the name, remember that star-stricken girl named CLICK that walked around the school in a dazzle? (Maybe it was just the ring on her finger.) A big limousine has just driven up to the theater. In it are EUNICE GREEN-WALD and BETTY GREEN. EUNIE is a successful private secretary who is connected with the Al-Hio Gas Stations owned by her old classmate, AL WERNER. AL always wanted to be a bum, but he just couldn't afford it; so now he works for a living.” Our friend BETTY GREEN works only in her spare time. She is the tycoon who invented the greaseless French Fry. Who is that dazzling blond coming down the street? Why it Uxiks like LA LA GABOR, and with her is ROMEO GILBERT, who is still being pursued by women. CAROLYN CLARK and GLENDIA COLLETTE, both dressed in the very latest mode, have appeared on the scene. They are models for the WELLS’ Model Agency. Also working for tycoon WELLS are ZENOLA DRAWN and DORIS BAILEY. GRACIE F1NEMAN is the head of her own model agency, 'Les Belles Mains, Inc.’ She provides pictures for the dishpan hands' ads.” Driving up in their brand new STARKMAN-ROYCE are BILLY GIBSON and KAYSONIA FORNEY. Our former class president is head of the Glenville Publishing Company. At the present time, he is working on a new Chemistry book for DR. K. M. PERSING. (K. M. never did get that new book!)” The play is just about to start, so we will leave MISS ADAMS and go inside. Everyone is seated and waiting for the play to begin. Wait! Who is this running down the street? Now 1 remember. JOY FISHER, who was always late to first period English, is running true to form. Standing in the foyer is the former CORR1NE HALPER, ex-career girl who married her boss. She is talking to lighting engineer MARK ESTRIN. JOHN EINSTEIN NEWMAN is also there with BILL RUFF, another prominent scientist, and JERRY ROMAN, the all-time great in the game of Cricket. MARILYN SOKOL is circulating through the audience, still trying to collect money for the Torch. And now the curtain is going up. The first attraction is CAROL KOHN and IRV BELL, who teamed up when the)' were still in high school. For old times' sake, the)’ are singing Baby, It's Cold Outside for their classmates. The next feaure will be JAMES SIMPSON and ELLA JOHNSON, who are presenting an exhibition of ballroom dancing. DOROTHY LEE, famous concert pianist, will also perform. As I look through the audience, I can spot several other famous Glenvillites. The stars of Karamu, BILL FEARS and MINNIE SUTTON, are sitting in front of me. Seated a few rows away are the three internationally famous elementary school teachers. You will remember them as VELLA RUDNICK, II.EEN SCHNIDER, and MARCIA FORMAN. Sitting with them are COOKIE Mogul, SAUNDRA MAI.EVAN; and DOCTOR JUDY GEI.MAN. Psychologists ILEEN RUSH and WINIFRED SK1GEN have their notebooks ready for use and are jotting down notes on audience behavior. With them is the famous linguist FELICE WENSTROM. who is working at the United Nations as an interpreter. Art teacher DON NADEL is sitting beside SHARLENF. FEIN, world-famous mathematician. Commercial artist THOMAS BROW is also sitting in the same row. The play is over now and the audience is dispersing. The leaves on the trees are scattered, some never to be reunited. Friends may meet once in a while, but the tree has sown new seeds and is now growing a new crop. These leaves will always be a part of the unit from which the)- came. The tree will never die in the hearts of the class of June, 1953. It will live until the very last leaf crumbles away into the dust from whence it came. Page 31 EPILOGUE We, the class of ’53, Have reached at last maturity. Our teachers all have done their best To help us in our knowledge quest. We grew a little every day, And now the years have faded away. Parties and dances were planned w ith care, And enjoyed by all who reveled there. Though many a year may wax and wane, The friendships created will always remain. As we travel through life, our separate ways, We’ll remember our ’’Tree” and our Glenville days.
