Hull, Faculty Adviser Dedication To our laughing-eyed com- rade and friendly adviser whose foresight and leader- ship guided us in the molding of a successful class, this toast to you, Miss Helen l-lum- phreys. Foreword When the current world upheaval subsides and human- ity, again exhausted, stops to survey the ruin before enter- ing upon another century or so of comparative tranquillity, we shall be reminded of the de- vastation left behind by C-engf his Khan, Atilla, and others of their kind. But through them all the human race has en- dured, to rise again with re- newed and augmented power. We have the record of the past to inspire our faith in the future. That is the hopeful message of History. Clayton R. Wise, Principal Faculty Clayton R, Wise, Principal Edna M. Studebaker, Assistant Principal Harry M. One may say easily and dramatically that it is the death rattle of civilization. But--I choose to believe differently. l believe it is the long deferred death rattle of the primordial beast. We have within ourselves the power to conquer bestiality, not with our muscles and our swords, but with the power of the light that is in our minds. What a thrilling challenge this is to all Science. To play its part in the ultimate triumph of evolution. To help speed the day when man becomes genuinely human, instead of the synthetic creature-part bogus angel, part actual brute-that he has imagined himself in the dark past .... Robert Sherwood in There Shall be No Night .-.oi There Shall Be No Night A microscope is made of glass, A mind is made of matter, The world is but a shining slide On which we scatter dreams, and hopes, and aspirations, and without much motivation Magnify them till they form Patterns to eternity. We color them with thoughts and acts, Elaborate with whimsy, Build our future out of dreams, And from their flimsy structure fashion means of living, little thought to troubles giving, Spinning bonds of fellowship, Glorified fraternity. Yet slides wax dim with age and wear, And worlds aren't always shining, For forces foreign to all that's right Exert a blinding spell, a sort of magnetism and through modern barbarism Destroy the culture of the ages, Leaving stark absurdity. And dreams grow dim and patterns break, But great minds never falter, They pierce the darkness, end the night, And somehow alter things which most thought quite beyond us, making bright those things beyond us, Delving deeper, surmounting sorrow, Reaching for infinity. Law-to learn the names of all the legal holidays. Sociology- to find out how to take candy from a baby. Chemistry- to learn how to mix our own headache pills. English - to learn at least one foreign language. Math - to learn how to file Pop's income tax report. Geometry- to get an angle on the teacher. Geometry- supplemented teacher instead of complimenting her. 738- Sports The june '41 class has scored as highly on the score board as on the honor roll. Back in the inner recesses of '38 we find record of the school's sopho- more football team. Major General Thomas George coached these hopeful Harmons in the fundamentals of the game. Some of the galloping ghosts and sprinting spirits on the team were Sanford Tolchinsky, Bud Rogoff, Bert Baker, Harold Gordon, George Shiffman, and Bob Schweitz. The latter part of the year enabled boys with talent in basketball and track to get splinters and cinders in their respective shoes. Stars like Norman Bash, lack Paller, and Abe Lebovitz pounded the panels of the basketball court. Andrew Braun, George Shiffman, Clifford Sargent, and lack Wainey broke the tapes and records for track coach johnson that year. ln the two remaining years other boys and other teams joined the swelling il spelled that rightl ranks. Phi Goldman, Al Banisch, Ray Burg-A hardt, and Bob Bartels mangled the maples for the bowling team. A newly composed l94l tennis team with Richard Ronis as manager and Robert Shank, Ben Rothman, and George Braun among the player ranks represented the school favorably in the racket wars. The class itself took part in the traditional l2B-l2A battles. As l2B's, our football team led by Captain Stanford Hirshman doubled the score of our l2A opponents I2-6. Late in the fall, our cagers put the ball through the hoop enough times to beat the l2A's. When we became Senior A's we beat the Senior B basketball team Zl -l 6. We owe this victory to the careful captainship of Pop Schoenberg. And it is thus that the athletic era of our class was spent. lt is true that we represent the lean years of school victories. Nevertheless, the real purpose of athletics has been accomplished, and unity has been born Phoenix-like from the ashes of hardship. 12B Basket Boll Censored XO We, ,Ao f Z QUUL! Only in the year l96l could you see such a convention of Science--Science Most Anything, judging from the variety of professions represented. This huge building was erected through the generous endowments of those eminent millionaire philanthropists, Sanford Bunin and Harvey Harris. The murals adorning the walls were done by the artist-lawyer, Paul Klein, with inscriptions by the well-known savant, Stanley Rubinstein. Earlier this afternoon former Glenville Thespians presented Stanley Baum's Pulitzer Prize Play, O Yeah? starring the dowager comedienne Evelyn Fuerst with Charlotte Lee as her budding petunia, and the matinee idol, Elek Hartman. Not to be forgotten is one of the most important assets to the company, Nathalie Heiner-iher husband is backing the showl with back stage effects by the Friedman-Shiffman team. Another cast including Katherine Dollar and Norma Miller, directed by Don Roper, are going on tour soon. l'm sorry to report that plans to produce a movie version have been foiled by the Raymond Burghardt Censor Board. Getting back to the convention, we're going right through the aisles now, and here on my right is the engineers' group. Abe Lebovitz, technical engineer extraordinary, has just finished giving a demonstration of great interest to Howard Cummings, vice-president of the Ford Co., and to the Republic Steel magnate, Ted Strater. William Wagner and Ezra Lamdin were recently awarded metals for outstanding short-method development in modern engineering, found by tunneling from Yale and Harvard respectively -to Vassar-to keep a rendezvous. The celebrated Richard Misch, who has made photography in engineering of world importance, is also here with his fellow collaborator, Robert Schweitz. Farther up in this section are the chemists, judging from the presence of the Nobel Prize winner, Laurence Ronis. Gerald Birnbaum, who in a speech referred to 2 and 2 equaling 4, is in the midst of a disagreement with Paul jackson, a firm believer in the Einstein Theory that the total is 3.9999999999 etc., not 4! ..44.. Class Prophecy The largest group here certainly take themselves seriously, judging from the acute attention they are giving Mrs. Ben Rothman's lnee Welt- manl exhibition of her blue-eyed twin boys, who made such remarkable progress, because of the efforts of Laura Margolis, the D-l-E-T-ician expert, and the internationally famous Drs. Braun and Braun. jeanne Weil, informer of human relations, is evidently furnishing good news, judging from the keen attention Hermine Feldman, Peggy Solomon, and Natalie Moses are exhibit- ing. Esther Levine has just seen the light of day resulting in an uncon- trollable spasm of the giggles. bringing Paul Albert, psychopathic orderly the finally found a place where his corn is appreciatedi over in a rush accom- panied by Nurse Stella ..,............. june Hartman is now mounting the platform to give her accounts of Don't Make the Three Fatal Mistakes l Made in My Three Marriages -she seems to be doing o.k. by them, though. That man Schulman is here again! This time Samuel is persuading Mil- dred Kluger, buyer for Mandel lnc., that the stunningly beautiful original by Hopkins just can't miss. All the oh's and ah's are caused by Ruth Cordon's entrance in a Forkus creation topped by a Renee chapeau i?l, to be worn only after office hours. Yolanda Withers, typical career woman of the day, is definitely interested. Oh, by the way, we're in the secretarial group now. Lois New- man, recently voted the ideal secretary, is giving tips to the young aspirants of her field, aided by Pearl Rosen, while Edith Hirschbein has filled all with renewed hope by her account of her marriage to the boss's son. Dr. Pressman is finding business even here, some people's doggies are setting up quite a howl. Harold Gordon is still exploring-he's now excavating cavities. International Dr. Krieger, who has found a new way of curing an old ailment, is finding the world very interesting. One-two-three-kick-sounds like Peggee, who has taken Broadway and Hollywood by storm. With her is janice Rothenberg, the songstress with that certain something. Hostess for the theatrical group, the former Shirley Berger, is finding everything just too, too devastating. l'm sorry, folks, but Sergeant Sargent reports that time is drawing to a close. The next voice you hear will be that of Richard Ronis coming to you from the banquet room, where food from the Clarence Brown Homestead will be the order of the day. Further details of the convention will be found in the Botnick Syndicate newspapers by the Dorothy Roth-Betty Stein team. -45...
