Just take a stroll by the school's trophy case, and you can see that the Indians have always been in the thick of glory whether in tennis, swimming, wrestling or foot- ball. Through these years there have been many out- standing figures. One of them is Putt. Putt graduated from Ithaca college and received his Master of Science degree from the State University at Albany. Then began his teaching career in 1943. In l952 Putt began his service as teacher, coach, di- rector of physical education, and friend at Glens Falls High. But Putt's heart and soul wasn't only in his career. In 1941 Anne Hogle and Bernard fPuttJ Lamay were married. Putt has devoted so much time and energy into Glens Falls High. We are forever grateful for his efforts. Form- ing Grandstanders, sponsor of Varsity G, member of Rotary, serving 2 years as Vice Presi- dent of the New York Athletics Association, Inc. in 1976, and President of the Northway Zone of Physical Education Teachers, these are just titles and posi- tions. There is no title or pos- session that can show the thanks everyone in this school has for our Putt. Anne will also be missed very much, as she diligently performed her duties as library aide, and the tedious work in- volved with manipulating AV equipment. She was also a val- uable assistant to Putt in his Y duties at sports ftmctions. You could not ask for a more avid fan than Anne! df? JN VOL' VEJWSJV Z' AND KONHSKNS 0? They attended a cheering clinic held at Fort Edward High School which taught them many new sidelines, mounts, and a pom pom routine. At this clinic the Varsity squad received an honorable mention award. By running the snack bar after school the cheerleaders were able to raise enough money to purchase mittens, and pom poms for the Junior Varsity squad. They also de- corated the boys' locker room for the Homecoming game and organized three pep rallies. It was a great season for all!! 6f!58l6L'5y4Z?8l65 ADD 529116727 Hifi! Now, I will speak of my great experience in your country. I have seen that the people here are very good and kind, but they are not as open as I had anticipated. I have made many great friends that I never expected to have. I have found Glens Falls to be a lovely town. The only problem with it, is the winter here. It is very cold and it's difficult to do much in such a climate. Unfortunately, I don't know how to ski! Now, I understand better, some of the dif- ferences between rny country and yours. I will try to motivate my fellow Mexicans about the United States, by describing the experi- ence that I have had here. I thank you with all my heart for all the generosity and help you have demonstrated. I love Glens Falls and your beautiful people. With affection, Yleana dances the American way! Fr, I? The Glens Falls Cross Country team had W an outstanding season this year. Our team got X off to a good start by winning its first invita- tionalg the Bishop Gibbons. We then swept through Glovelsville and South High on our way to winning the Cobleskill Invitational. Our team ran away from Hudson Falls 19-36 flowest score counts by adding finisher's placesj. Then we went on to get a 6th place finish at the Marist Invitational, where our team lacked men due to injuries. The fol- lowing Tuesday the team overtook Queensbury with a new course record of 15:19 set by Noel Scidmore. We then lost a heartbreaker to Shaker at Saratoga by a mere five points. That Friday, our te am stole the Foothills Council Title . At the Class B Sectionals on Nov. 6, our team swept the meet with first through fourth and ninth, with an unheralded 19 points. At the Intersectionals our te am was second, most- ly because they had to run up a ski jump hill on the course. For the grand finale, our team came up 4th in the state at the New York State Federa- tion Meet. Noel Scidmore was 7th, followed closely by his teammate jim O'Conne1l in 13th place, Doug Gaulin 4273, Chris Sommo f7Oj, Bill O'Connell 11151, George Cleven- ger f145j, and Brian Teague QZSOQ. The Indians posted a reg- ular season record of 13- 3- 1, with a league record of 7- 2-1. The Indians were honored by being able to participate in the first night game in the his- tory of Foothills Council at Derby Park in Hudson Falls. The Indians battled the Hudson Falls Tigers to a 0-0 tie in a double over time. The Indian defense this year was the best its been since soc- cer started in Glens Falls four years ago. The defense was outstanding with performances by fullbacks Mike Fish, Bob Maloney, David Middleton, and goalie Mark Celeste. The scor- ing department was led by line- men Kenny Clarke, Brad Wil- liams, Tom Edwards, and Steve Wienstein. Glens Falls finished the reg- ular season by beating Hudson Falls and secu-ring a sectional berth. Once the sectionals start- ed there was no stopping the Indians. In the opening games, they rolled over Ichabod Crane 4-0, and Hudson Falls 6-O. To clinch the sectional title they trounced Hudson High 3-0. Against a tough Marathon High team in the inter-sectionals, Glens Falls won 1-0 on a long goal by Mark Russo. By shutting out Marathon, the Indians set a sectional record by complet- ing four straight shutouts in post-se ason play. The Glens Falls High School basketball team had one of its most successful seasons ever in 1976-77. Under the fine coaching of Ed Davis, the team compiled an 18-2 overall record and a flawless 10-0 Foothills Council re- cord. The team won 17 games in a row after losing the second game of the season to Mont Pleasant, and this loss was later avenged, as the Indians dumped the Raiders 70-68 on our home court. The team was considered by many to be one of the finest in the capital district. They were also rated second in New York State at one point for all high schools with less than 1, 000 students. The leading scorer for the Indians was Junior Donnie Hill with a 22. 1 point aver- age. Senior Mark David was one of the lead- ing rebounders for the Indians, and his fam- ous Slam Dunk was always a crowd pleas- er. Senior Willie Harper was a flashy ball handler all year, and his presence will be missed next season. The combined rebound- ing talents of Greg Young and Keith Gott- lieb could always be depended upon, and they'll both be back next year also. Coach Davis and everyone else will be looking forward to another successful season next year, with eight Lettermen returning, and some fine talent coming up from the Junior Varsity squad. 58 Junior guard Donnie Hill was a tremendous ball-handler for the Indians, and his out- side shooting made him the leading scorer in the Foothills Council. With some strong returning vets and some likely IV prospecm, Coach Bob Carty looked for- ward to another of many successful seasons. How- ever, some of these returning veterans decided not to return this year, which, coupled with a few costly injuries, took its toll on the Indian grapplers, re- sulting in a 5-11 record. The Indians did have some highlights, though. They took second in the Middlebtuy tournament, fifth in the highly-touted Canandaigua Tournament, tied for fifth in the Section II Tournament fwith only three wrestlers competingj, and with Mike Varmette scoring all 23 points placed seventh in the State Tournament at Syracuse. There were many individuals who stood out for Glens Falls all season long. Scott Smith came on strong at the end of the season to be voted to the All- Council Wrestling Team at 155 lbs. Mike Varmette 's list of accomplishments are as follows: 1st in the Middlebtuy Tournament, Most Valuable Wrestler at Middlebury, 3rd at Canandiagua, 1st in the Class B Tournament, 1st in the Section II finals, lst in the State Tournament, the Demeo award as the Outstanding Wrestler in Section II, and All-Council at 167 lbs. junior Bob Solomon was the most im- proved wrestler on the team, and he won the Middle- bury and Class B Tournaments, placed 2nd at Canan- daigua and was voted to the All-Council team at 177 lbs. junior Dan George led the team in pins, was undefeated up until the States, won the Mid- dlebury, Canandiagua, Class B, and Section II Tournaments, and copped the heavyweight slot on the All-Council Team.
