ADRIANCE Class Advisor 99125-.25 COMMENCEMENT PAGEANT The World of Books Two seniors, Bill and Betty, struggling with an assignment in literature, bemoan their fate at having to do so much required reading in English. They fall asleep over their reading. In their dream Mark Twain appears to justify the place that Tom Sawyer holds in the curriculum. Thereupon he takes Bill and Betty on a tour of the world of books. From the books Bill and Betty have been required to read in school step the authors and characters to recall to the seniors the enjoyment they took in the books at the time they read them. Scenes from the stories appear before Bill's and Betty's eyes. When they awake, they admit that their complaints about literature were a pose. Qui Of The Fgllhg Pan By FRANCIS SWANN 1 Three young men and three young women, would-be stage folk, are sharing an apartment in all innocence. It is a whacky plan they have in mind, for the apartment they rent is immediately above that of a Broadway producer. They rehearse the play which he is currently producing, but the problem is - how to get him upstairs to see it? Now, it so happens that the producer is an amateur chef, and right in the middle of a culinary con- coction he runs out of flour. He comes upstairs to borrow a cup. At last! The kids aren't going to let him out until he sees some evidence of their ability. So to impress him they stage a murder scene. It is so realistic that police swarm into the scene and the misunderstanding becomes hilarious. However, in spite of everything, what seems to be a profitable friendship springs up, and it looks as if the future might hold some promise for the youngsters. 'Rememberzizg When 'J Reviewing a play that has not yet been Hnished is indeed a theatrical phenomenon. The living drama of three acts which will reach a climax soon at Glens Falls High School, however, is not an ordinary one. There have been no skilled actors, no script, not even rehearsals, but only competent directors to aid this production. There have been many outstanding achieve- ments in sports and intellectual fields and there have been moments of humor, pathos, and beauty. Behind the scenes, faculty and students united in a common effort to make this performance a successful one. The first scene in the first act opens in September, 1944, with Angelo Bacas, Gordon McCarthy, Richard Noonan, and Ned Cahill cast in the leading roles. Eyes turn to the football field where action-packed scenes are enacted by Ken Butterfield, Greg Faherty, Navio Gagliardi, Gordon McCarthy, Richard Noonan, Reinhardt Stolz, Paul Linehan, and Brockett Morey. Pepping up the action is Ruth Clements on the varsity cheering squad and Nancy Stebbins of the Jay Vee outfit. Financial and moral support is supplied by the student body, governed by John Sherman, Ned Cahill, and Jane Linehan, their student council odicers. As the setting changes to the hardwood courts, Navio Gagliardi and Joe Mercier represent the class as basket- eers. The climax arrives when school is dismissed at noon, May 7, to celebrate V-E Day. As the curtain rises for the second time, one sees the cast returning to school with relieved minds and hearts, V-J Day having been declared but a few days before. The complacent juniors select Angelo Bacas, Adrian Hulsebosch, Glen Caffry, and Jeanie Millar as star performers. To keep in touch with the boys in service, Helen Halloran spends her time editing Smoke Signals. The class ring committee chooses the appro- priate class jewels. Again the football team provides some thrilling scenes for the enthusiastic rooters. Keren Morey joins Nancy Stebbins and Ruth Clements on the varsity cheering group and Helen McBride and Joanne Huntington represent us as Jay Vee cheer- leaders. These girls are among the many who find it necessary to attend the crucial Whitehall-Granville game - school or no school! The school musical organizations are honored when the notable director, Percy Grainger, appears at the annual school concert. Taking student council roles are Richard Noonan, Joseph Mercier, Robert Robinson and Richard Gale. A tragic scene is inserted when the class receives news that a former classmate, S Zfc Harold Wood, has died in a barracks fire. In a happier theme, the Girls Athletic Club takes a trip to Lake Placid but Barbara Flemming Hnishes the trip with a broken leg. The feature event of the year takes the spotlight from there on. Yes, the class sponsors a Junior Prom long to be remem- bered. Nancy Stebbins reigns as Queen surrounded by an attractive court including Keren Morey, Holly Kalbfleisch, Helen McBride, Joyce Perkett, Carol Helm, and Barbara Flem- ming. Paul Cushman, Janet Hodgkins, Keren Morey, Ned Cahill and Joanne Huntington ably assisted by the rest of the class, work hard on the Rainbow decorations. Stanley Lackey's Work on the entrance amazes us all. Behind the scenes We see Gene McCaW having trouble with a state trooper. She is only driving Weeksie's car illegally! To top off the prom event, the photographer appears, painstakingly takes pictures of our pretty damsels, and afterwards discovers that his shutter was closed. Closing this act, Adrian Hulsebosch and Jane Linehan leave to represent the class at Boys' and Girls' State respectively after our new secretary, Doris Parker, filled out endless forms for them. The curtain triumphantly reopens on the students begin- ning their senior year determined to make their own and the C1ass's final record a favorable one. The digniied seniors, how- ever, lose their prestige when they are seen watching and sympathizing with some men who are maneuvering Petunia, an injured cow, back into a truck in the middle of Glen Street. Quickly regaining their sense of dignity, they present Adrian Hulsebosch, Richard Gale, Jeanie Millar, and Theo Lazarou for the leads of the year. Supporting parts went to Student Council presidents, Keren Morey and Paul Linehan, Girls' Hi-Y presi- dent, Carol Helm, Dramatics chief, Keren Morey, French Club leader, Bill Deguireg Northern Star editors, Jane Linehan and Elaine Leichtg and Girls' Athletic Club president, Jeanie Millar. Again the sportsmen take the limelight.- Richard Noonan's unfortunate leg injury and Paul Linehan's historical basket for St. Mary's highlight this scene. Jean Cusato is added to the cheering ranks. Broken windows at Halloween time and the school's furnaces being converted to oil are signs of normal times. To begin the year right, a new flag is raised. Another addi- tion to the curriculum is the radio programs over XVXVSC sponsored by the Northern Star. As Kilroy makes the rounds, Carolyn Bosworth finds time to burn her chemistry book. QBy mistake?J Senior Ball week throws the class into a feverish activity with Miss Adriance emerging with mistletoe kisses from the class wolf. News of Mr. Donnelly's leaving saddens 511 the students. We still can't figure out why all the glasses didn't break at that assembly given in his honor. How proud the class is when its talented dramatists present, Out of the Frying Pan, the Senior Play. Winter Carnival Week-end finds Joyce Perkett and Richard Roberts ascending their thrones. Track and baseball become popular again, and senior boys dominate the teams. The final records are yet to be turned in by captains Ned Cahill and Dick Noonan and their teammates. Drama Night, too, is made successful by our class members. Between each act, of course, we hear and see the famous Parham-Deguirc duo. In the spring we hear the exciting news that Audrey Sullivan's drawing has won a Hrst prize in the District Art Contest at Troy. When class day comes, Walter Schreiner and Benjamin Chernoff are announced as the valedictorian and salutatorian respectively and Jane Linehan and Glen Caffry serve as principals. Our year book, under the able direction of Glen Caffry, Marian Rifenberg, Helen Mc- Bride, Mina Roach, Dan Bush, and Carol Helm, takes its place on the shelves of school history as another worthwhile Red and Black. Still to be given is our senior pageant when the twins will take the spotlight. Q i The play is not over. The curtain will fall on graduation night when the critics judge the effectiveness of the way in which we have played our roles. When 181 of us receive our diplomas, we will have the concrete evidence that the Teachers Guild has once again directed a notable performance.
