This particular summer a theatre is established nearby - and Jac, the college-age daughter, finds herself fired with theatrical ambition. She also finds herself in love with the handsome young director. julia March, the eccentric and domineering owner of the city newspaper which Mr. Grayson edits, has founded the theatre to further the ambitions of her pampered beautiful grand-daughter who comes to stay with the Graysons. A gossipy neighbor overhears a rehearsal scene and concludes that Rosemary and the director are engaged. The repercussions jolt the household and the whole lake-shore, causing both Jae and her lazy brother, in love with Rosemary, to leave home in an unfriendly neighbor's sailboat. Reporters arrive. Comic havoc prevails- until in the end, in the midst of surprises and complications, all of the principal characters realize that they have adjusted their relationships with each other and the world a little more wisely. She sprang, full grown and armed, from the head of Jupiter, and was immediately admitted to the assembly of the Gods. Her power in heaven was great, she could hurl the thunders of jupiter, prolong the life of men, and bestow the gift of prophecy. ' Although she has been accepted as a gift of the 1920 graduating class and placed in a dominating position before the main' doors on the first floor, she has not been accorded the respect worthy of a goddess in her position. , , ' ' - She could not hurl the thunders of Jupiter to repel the attacks of students upon her plaster of Paris form, she could not prolong her own life in G. F. H. S. at the hands of vandals supposedly engaged in a course of study, nor, could she predict for herself what was to happen during the stay of the class which entered her temple on September 8, 1943. 1 We who entered on that memorable fall day were a typical Sophomore group - nervous 'about our 'first appearance before Minerva. We anticipated many new adventures, we preferred to idolize seniors rather than teachers, and we began to have an even more profound dislike for homework. After we had gained a foothold in G. F. H. S., we picked Gordon McCarthy, John Caifry, Bob Rider, and Reinhard Stolz to direct our activities in the respective positions of President, Vice-Presi- dent, Secretary, and Treasurer. The winter flew by with the Sophomore Ball and the pitiless mid-term exams, and, as spring blew around the corner, giddy girls began to take a more intent interest in their attire. They purchased new Easter outfits, and set .out in search of the gowns to be worn at their first formal. Somenaive characters thought Minerva shouldn,t be outdone, and so adorned her in a fetch- ing new bonnet and a flashy scarf borrowed from the local clothing drive pile. . h i 4 Our Junior year opened after too short a vacation, and John Caffry fPresidentj , Bob Rider fVice- Presidentj , Fifi Adams fSecretaryj , and Tom LaFera fTreasurerj were appointed mythical beings in our temple of Minerva. We became acquainted with such phrases as Algebra is a language, This is a IOOZ, mastery, and 'lThe proof of the pudding is in the eating. The male members of our class began to believe mistakenly that smoking raised their social standard, and insisted that Minerva take part in the fad as well. In resisting this, her arm was broken beyond repair, and surgeons in Boston had to whip up a new one. With Miss Nowlan as nurse, she was put well on the road to recovery. Soon after Marjorie Southwick was crowned Queen at our Junior Prom with Fifi Adams, Nancy Church, June Coulter, June Lord, Joyce Wells, and Jane White as her attendants, V-E Day was com- memorated, for the most part, in a quiet and thoughtful manner. Then came our last high school summer vacation in which we made preparations for our final year in G. F. H. S. With our Senior year came the great awakening. We found 'that Seniors weren't so big after all, and that the teachers really did know more than we. Bob Rider flyresidentj , Marjorie Stilwell QVice- Presidentj, Joe Ricupito QSecretaryj, and Paul Ward QTreasurerj were ordained inferior gods, and served well as agents of Minerva. ' To the glee of the girls, rare specimens of the male species became more plentiful-meaning male teachers. With them came the veteran students back for refresher courses or to pick up where they left off. Reconversion seemed good, and the hopes of the draft-bait were raised. As our girls shot the works in the cosmetic line, so did Minerva. This resulted in Mr. Bosworth's having to give her a facial with a potent mixture from the lab. Her sensitive skin reacted violently to this necessary treatment, however, as one may see' by the scars left behind. Our football and basketball squads had had successful seasons, and we were kept busy with such activities as the Senior Recital, Senior Ball, Senior Play, publication of the Red and Black and the Commencement Pageant. The year draws to a close and we begin to dread the impending finals. We, the class of 1946, wish to say good-bye, and to impress upon our successors with the mistakes We made, the necessity of treating Minerva as a superior goddess. If the removal of beauty paint has to be repeated, or if she is injured seriously once more, her figure will no longer be able to stand before the main doors. The Greeks ascribed to her divinity all human passions. She is capable of love, friend- ship, gratitude, and all affections. Be good to her! Xf' Q . 4 3 3 ..W,,,. our 192 'lf feciiviil VS?
