Nightwatch Standing here near the window, I reach over to turn the lamp out. The light of the moon appears on the tops of the rosemary plant growing in the large green pot on the wide sill. There is no trace of yellow in the moonlight. The moon must be somewhere over Lake Erie-far away. Just look at how it stays in the sky, like a balloon over a carnival. The day is torn away by night in an orderly pattern, as though it were supervised by the eyes of those craters on the moon. My lashes brush the window-glass as I jerk awake . . . Moon, you're a guardian, a watchful eye, observing all. Pam Bowersox Dancer A carefree soul In a world of her own, aimlessly flying The heavens. Birdlike in form, with a light and feathery style, Her mind is all her own. Seemingly untouched by human faults She covers up her woes And she fights away her pain By dancing endlessly. Her quest to us is quite unknown. Only she knows where to go. Her soaring spirit leads the way As only it must do. And as her form dims from our sight A lingering effect is left- It leaves the eye to wonder And the heart to seek. Eleni Shiepis A Meditation Freedom is not the bird's flightg It is his decision whether or not to fly! Cindy Carpathios a child i am a person quite ordinary and small my mind looks up to things i don't understand at all diana diflorio I'm Not You I cannot take' your shadow away from you, I'm not you. I cannot feel your pain when you are hurting, I'm not you. I cannot see your dreams when you are dreaming I'm not you. I cannot take your place when you are dead! I'm not you. Ron Pryor Cedar Point Out-of-Season No more tic, tic, tic, tic, tic, tic, tic, tic . . . as the roller-coaster inches its way up The long, towering, first hill. Gone the screams and the skin-crawling sensation That comes with flying down the track. Oh, woeful is the sound of no sounds! Kathy DiSimone

POETRY AND PRO E Morning Song Rising very slowly, The sun dispels the darkness, Awakening the night. Rising very steadily, They Are Only Names I am surrounded by people. People whose names I know, but whose faces are covered by the ground I walk upon. I will never know more about these people other than their ages and the two most significant and traumatic dates in everybody's life. This information is recorded on row after row of dingy grey blocks of stone. Most are scarred with nicks, scratches and cracks from time and weather. Also implanted in the ground are bronze-colored plates whose in- scriptions are now covered with snow. At this time of year, there are no real flowers here, the few flowers seen are plastic. However, the layer of snow has a resemblance to a blanket- keeping out the cold from those beneath it. The quietness could be peaceful to many who visit if only it did not symbolize what so many fear yet no one can deny-death. Patty Trumpeter Winterscape Winter-bare trees shiver in the bitter cold as glittering snow swirls in tiny whirlwinds. Care attempt to climb icy streets-somewhat like the human race-always slipping and back-sliding before reaching the top. The sun explodes into flame, Burning rapidly. Evergreens covered with soft, fluffy sonw appear almost warm while other snow-laden trees Retiring Suddenly, stand naked and freezing, as the brisk wing The S1111 fades i1'1t0 night, whips through their branches. Sleeps soundly. Lu Ann Skelly Renee Strasser Cramped Style Bedtime Thoughts is what I have a bad case of- because of you just when the act is going smoothly you enter the scene- an endless commercial- and screw up the whole picture. Maybe I ought to change channels- or better yet TURN THE TV OFF! Leslie Dougherty Before I close my eyes and go off to never-never land, my mind drifts into another world. It wanders back to those good old days of skinned knees, hop-scotch . . . and even fairy god-mothers. With all due respect to present and future, my mind carefully repeats the important incidents of the past twenty-four hours like a tape-recorder, so that a single experience of the day just past won't be missed. Marlene Silver
