THE 1960 PIRATE Published By The Student Council GLENN HIGH SCHOOL Terre Haute, Indiana William Vickers Don Vickers Marjorie Vickers Stu Vickers DEDICATION i m M r Mm w ■■u m ' m •; ■■■The Glenn Pirate Staff dedicates the 1960 annual to the memory of Mr. William Vickers who died suddenly last February with a heart attack. Mr. Vickers was born February 17, 1907, in West Terre Haute, Indiana. He graduated from Valley High School in 1926 and enrolled at Indiana State Teachers College the following year. Having received teacher training, he taught at Sandford, Indiana, for three years. Then he went to New Goshen to be principal of the grade school. During his stay at New Goshen Mr. Vickers married Marjorie Stewart. To this family were born two sons, Donald and Stewart. In 1943 Mr. Vickers left the teaching profession to go into Civil Service employment. He was trained at Picatin- ney Arsenal in New Jersey. Then he was with the Vigo Ordinance Plant until he entered the army in 1944. He was sent to the European Theater for active duty in November of that year. After the war Mr. Vickers returned to I.S.T.C. for further education. He earned his Master of Science degree in 1948. At Glenn Mr. Vickers was an active sponsor of classes, clubs, and athletics. In addition to these he carried a full teaching load. He was never too busy to give a helping hand or an encouraging word. Students and faculty alike mourn his departure. With grateful and nostalgic hearts we humbly dedicate ■} our efforts to his memory. •; Glenn still loves you, Mr. Vickers. r m M i ' Axl X- r The month of March held the Pirate ship snow- bound, but the teachers saw to it that we blazed a trail every day through the white wilderness to the halls of learning. Janet Rea, a 1958 graduate, died in an auto accident in January, 1960. Death has closed her friendly eyes, chilled the warmth of her smile, stilled her laughing voice, and taken her charm and wit. But nothing can erase her memory, nor mar the record of loyalty and service she gave to her school. We express our thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Rea for the lovely memorial they have given the school, a stereo sound system. Is death the last sleep? No, it is the last and final awakening. Glenn High School and fans were very proud of their Pirate team when they won the County basketball championship. Through our coach ' s untiring effort and the boys ' will to win, the Pirates led the way to victory many times dur- ing the season . Our peppy cheerleaders have inspired the team many times. Their lengthy practices have shown up in their precise timing in leading the yells. With hard work, worry, preparation, and cooperation, the block finally took shape and looked pretty good at home games. Jim Walker was captain of the cheer block.
