The 20 gauge needle looks formidable, the patient is thin and frail, and the student nurse about to give her first hypo gingerly inserts the tip of the needle and watches the Peni- cillin run out on the skin. On medical floor the first bath vis invariably scheduled for a 350 pound gentleman who is paralyzed from the neck down. The weeks in hydro take toll in aching muscles and a herniated disc . . . despite Mrs. Erich's instruction. Somehow, we existed through the first few months of training and were awarded a stripe. In surgery the student distinguishes herself by contami- nating an entire tray of sterile instruments while she is trying to impress Mrs. Davis with her outstanding ability. Through repeated encounters she takes on the skill of a diplomat in persuading a determined 5 year old that a teaspoon of Acromycin is second only to ice cream in taste appeal. To the pain racked patient on surgical floor the student nurse makes tangible her concept of fundamental nursing and her white cap becomes transfigured into a luminous averole symbolizing care for his wants, comfort for his spirit, and peace for his pain.
