Mother Daughter Dessert UA Day at the Fair with Ma was the theme for this year's fourth annual Mother- fDaughter Dessert, sponsored by the Girl's League. On january 22, the girls and their mothers got the chance to spend an evening of fun and games together. The cafeteria looked like a country fairground where a variety of events took place. Among the contests held were the look-alike, best dressed, and the Hula Hoop competitions. Also, pie and cake judgings were held. The evening was a huge success and all that attended had a great time. The entire Girl's League worked hard and deserves a big con- gratulations! Once again, this year's Talent Show proved that the students at Glendale High have more for lessj talent than is apparent during the regular school hours. ln the past, the pro- grams have been judged and a winner was chosen. This year, however, the show was ba- sicly for entertainment. The acts that entered ranged from musical acts to comedy acts. Some of the solo performers included Al Savay and Duane Garcia who strummed out the tunes of Neil Young and Yes, respectively. Maureen B. and Kim D. argued about who was on first while the unique combination of a tuba, saxaphone, and drum came alive with Another one Bites the Dust. Eleven acts in all were enjoyed by all. Halloween Hop The first dance of the school year, the Halloween Hop, was sponsored by the Drill Team. The highly successful dance brought out all of the ghosts, goblins, cowboys, punk rockers, and creatures of every kind from Glendale High. The girls asked their favorite guys to spend an exciting and spooky evening in the cafeteria. The dance floor was packed with the unusually costumed students who rocked and rolled to the waves made by the excellent band, Ocean . The creative transformation of the cafeteria, done by the Drill Team, was intensified by the band's music, both which created a mysterious atmosphere. Later in the even- ing, the Count Court was announced and the Count was caped. The court included Tom Dudley, Andy Eddy, Randy Gonzalez, Greg Zarian, Matt Howard, Brent Bickett, and the Count, Kevin Kiesau. All in all, the entire evening was definitely a success and was enjoyed by everyone, thanks to the Drill Team. BA55 The judges consider the entries. As the Halloween spirit rolled around, the traditional events took place on October 30 and 31. The first of these events was the Perk-up- a-Pumpkin contest. Each second period class designed a pumpkin they thought would be creative enough to win. Indeed, each entry was creative, The perked-up pumpkins included skiers, Raggedy Ann and Andy, and even Mt. St. Helen's, complete with smoke. Oth- ers illustrated such major issues as the presidential debates and the capture of the U.S. Embassy. The second contest that took place on Halloween was the Dress-Up Day con- test. The unusual and mostly bizarre costumes seemed to reflect the inner personalities of the students. Some came dressed as new wave rockers, coneheads, baseball players, and even Darth Vader. The pumpkinhead debates. If the students could be anything they wanted Harewho? Halloween I-laps Juniors Break Curfew Better cover that one up! The eleventh grade's big night out, the Junior Prom, took place on December 6, 1980, in the gym. The otherwise sports-oriented gym was transformed into a romantic setting perfectly representing the night's theme, Even in the Quietest Moments. Couples found fun and romance as they danced the entire even- ing away. Everyone responded with excitement to the very talented band, Front Seat. As the night sped by, the suspense mounted as to who would be crowned queen of the Junior class. Junior class president, Joey McClure, finally announced Mary Owen as queen. Mary reigned over the remainder of the evening along with her court of which included Julie Gangi, Kim Deissenberger, Lori McSweeny, Brenda Kaiser, and Kim Greenburg. Remo Iezza got camera happy too. This years Alumni Basketball game between the 1980, Varsity Basket- ball Team and the various alumni graduates from G.H.S.'s past, turned out to be a good one. The game took place in the school gym, where the fans were amazed by the many talents of the Alumni All-Stars. By the time the first half was over, the Alumni were ahead by a respectable four points. This is when the ALUMNI started to slow down the pace and the Varsity team took advantage of it. Leading the game by a near two points, the Varsity team took their grounds to start the fourth quarter. Through a long fourth quarter, the game finally ended with the All-Stars on top, 65- 61. After game interviews were not allowed, due to the fact that the Varsity team lost the game. Chris Jensen an Alumni returner for three years, was interviewed after the game stating that this was the toughest game he has played in three years, He also feels that this years team will go far, Playing for the Alumni were: Alen Cauble, Wayne Crownover, Chris Jensen, Bill Kriste, Craig Knudsem, Scott Knudsen, Dave Miller, Craig Rethmeyer, Steve Snodgress, Ted Tiffany and jay Thomas. Hi, my name is Linda Veloz, and thanks to APS I spent a wonderful two months in Switzerland last summer. I had always thought of Switzerland as sort of a dream country, with a lot of mountains, snow, and banks, but while I lived there I came to recognize it as a country with a very old, proud history and customs both like and different to America. Switzerland borders on Germany, Italy, and France, and the languages of all three countries are spoken there. QMy family spoke Germanj My host brother was taking the average thirteen classes-not each class every day. All classes are highly competi- tive, and after school he rarely had time for any- thing besides homework. What was a surprise to me was that the Swiss cannot get their drivers license until they reach the age of eighteen! Consequently, few school kids drove to school. Many people walked or rode their bikes, and if they lived farther away they often took the train. My host family considered my three car family to be very wasteful. Not only was my Swiss summer a dream come true, I learned a lot about the country, the culture, and the thinking of different people. MHS A5557 Hi! I'm Elaine Barros and I'm an APS exchange student from Brazil. My reasons for becoming an exchan e student were because I thought it would ie a great opportunity to spend a year etting to know about the United States, and Eecause I hosted an American girl and I know how wonderful it can be. I have been fortunate enough to see and ex- perience many new things since coming here. Having this experience a person learns that loving goes beyond time and space. Writing this gives me a chance to thank all my new friends here. I especially appreciate my sis- ter and great friend, Chris Haase. You don't know how much help you have been in enhanc- ing my experiences in the United States. It's impossible to put all my experiences in such few words. Possibly if I could combine all the beautiful si hts of nature present here, like the rainbow ang added the special kinds of peo- ple who live in the United States, I could make one sculpture of this experience. I am sure this is goin to be one of the best years of my life. I woulflike to thank my host family, Glendale High and AFS for making it possible! Thank you! IEEE 15 My name is David Lilien and I come from Belgium, a small country of West Europe. I live in the Southeast of Belgium in Verviers, a city of 30,000 people, and my native language is French. In Belgium, there are only 10,000 citizens- I be- lieve the population of L.A. The weather is fairly cool and during the summer the temperature reaches 80 at the most, whereas in winter we have snow. There are so many things to do, to see, to discover in a city as big as LA. School here is much easier than school in Belgium. The class atmosphere is different: here students are more relaxed, the classes are noisier, and the teachers are more loose towards the students. In Bel- gium, a person has ten courses chosen for him, and school begins at 8:00 am and ends about 4:00. I enjoy sports very much. I am a fan of the I..A. Dodgers, and I belong to the tennis and soccer teams at GI-I.S. This experience is really great for me. I have learned a lot in discovering new people and a new culture. I think I will benefit from this wonderful year, and it will prove to be something I shall never forget. Hi, I am Pascale Blunier and I am a YFU exchange student from Switzerland. In Switzerland I live in a small village named Brugg, with only 4,000 inhabi- tants. It is rarel hot there and is usually raining. I love the warmth and especially the beaches here! To answer the most usual questions, yes, I do ski, and we do have TV in Switzerland! In Switzerland I attend the gymnasium which is like high school and college here. Gymnasium is not mandatory that is why studying there is much more academic than in American high schools. In my school there are only about 500 students, so G.I-I.S. is a big exper- ience for me. There are so many activities in and around this school that a person can't get bored. We do not have that in this dimension of my school. We have sports, but no clubs. I think it is wonderful! To anyone who would like to become an ex- change student: I would say, do it, because it is a reat experience for everyone involved. I have Fearned a great deal since my departurelfrom Swit- zerland-about myself, understanding others, and fitting in with another culture. I am ver happy to be here in California and I know it will be a fantastic year for me. 133535 M ,Nu .,.. . , W .,,. N' ,raw Ha. 1 11, if-4, H W ,,f-- ...ted --,,f. Q . . s :.A e r I r . 'I Hi! My name is Marcel Koehler, and I am a YFU ex- change student from West Germany. I came here to America because I thought it would be interesting to stand on my own legs for one year, to build my own personality and to think about my life in the future far away from my country. My country differs not in many ways from the U.S. I guess it comes because Europa, in the 60's and 7O's, picked a lot of things up from the Americans. So, we have the same things, distinct only because of the different cultural influence. School is a big difference. Occupation- al school is combined with regular school. In Germany, we cannot go to classes like print shop or wood shop. We have special schools for that. You can go to it when you learn a business. Our political system is also based on the democratic idea. The elaboration of the USA's system is because you are more qualified here. I like America. My experiences are mostly positive and I must thank YFU, Glendale High School, and my host family. They have all given me the chance to live for one year in the United States of America. I am Diana Hawthorne and I am a YFU exchange stu- dent for a year in France. I had to give up my senior year at Glendale High to come here, but I do not regret it at all, and I do not think I ever will. This is a great experience, to live in a different culture, with a family that I did not even know when I got here, but who is now a part of me. I have a ten year old sister, a sister my age, two older brothers, my parents and a dog. We live about 95 miles northeast of Paris, in the suburbs of St. Quentin. A person learns so much about himself, others and even about appreciation of the U.S. through YFU. I just love it! Of course I have homework, and there are times when I feel homesick, but it is all part of the things I am exper- iencing. David Lilien, also a YFU student, who is now at Glendale High, is my Belgian-brother and is staying in my home for a year. I was fortunate enough to take a visit to Belgium to visit David's family. I really wish more people would participate in YFU and AFS, or some exchange program, because it really is a different experience that often is not given. A person meets a lot of people who will always be friends. It is great to become a part of an international family. :ma 'HW Top, L to R: Advisor Mrs. Davey, Patrice Ritter, Patricia Ferguson, Cianna Hampton, jenny Smith, Caryn Fong, Ritu Sadana, Ann Marston, Steve Williams, Paul Rodriguez, jay Duncan, Cindy Netzer, f2ndJ, Stacey Seamon, Mike Esteban, Editor Paul Tenner, Greg Foote, Robert Cheledon, Editor Roger Hancock, f3rdJ, Danny Delaney, Craig Herzer. The Sophomores undefeated year will linger on as a goal to all the other sports. Stats show that the wins were not slight win but dominations. In some games it was as if the other teams were not in the game or out Goathead Fishing . The Sophomores under the leadership of Quarterback Scott Werbelow, with 74 com- pletions for 1200 yard total, led the Nitro team to their 10-0 victories. Scotts' primary receiver, Tom McMillan contributed great- ly to Scotts success with 44 recptions. In one game which is a Glendale High Sopho- more record which was also tied by Torn himself, was the reception of 9 passes. Another outstanding factor was the de- termined play of Jay Willia. Jay, a running back, ran 818-yards on route to 8 touch- downs, one of which came at a critical time during the Burroughs game. The Sopho- mores found themselves down 8-9 in the third, but won 15-9 on Willia's touchdown. Our Sophomore team are receiving more and more people at our games. This is due to the fact that the Sophomores are not Sophs anymore, thats an old standard, but the Sophs are a team in unisome with each other. The games are not considered a pre- game anymore but rather a game of future offensive and defensive starts. BID The 1980 Glendale High Cross Country team started off the season kind of dismal but gathered strength and finished league with a 3-2 record. Steve Sherman led the Dynamiters with impressive wins and his best time being 15:54. Other bright spots for the Nitros were number two man Tracy Grissom and third man Oscar I-Ierrera. Glendale clinched a spot in the CIF. finals for their impressive come- back in league. Coming in first Anticipation Follow the leader 5, , ' 204 - .3 . HL i W de... 'xlib ,,,.. . . t. The Sophomore Cross Country Team ended the 1980 season with a record of 4 and 1, with 1 forfeit. The first part of the season, jules Vallier was the 41 soph. runner for the Nitros leading them to victory in a practice meet against S. Pasadena. Though the Nitros dropped the next meet to league champs, Burroughs, they won their next four with Kerry Weaton, Bruce Rosenburg, Jules Vallier and Mike Schultz being strong finishers for Glendale. In the Monrovia meet, though Glendale dominated pointwise, the meet was forfeited to the Wildcats on a technicality, giving us our second league defeat. In the second half of the season, jules was replaced by Kerry Weston as the 41 runner due to injuries that kept jules from running as well as in his past performances. It is expected that most of these runners will be back running for varsity next year. Finishing with full steam I can do it!
